THE FIDDLER’S ELBOW, ITALY’S OLDEST IRISH PUB, CELEBRATES 50 YEARS AHEAD OF ITS TIME WHEN IT OPENED IN 1976, THIS ROME PUB IS MARKING ITS MILESTONE ANNIVERSARY WITH A MASSIVE PARTY Andy Devane

T

he Fiddler’s Elbow, a landmark watering hole in Rome, is celebrating 50 years as the oldest Irish pub in Italy with live music every night from 22 October until 1 November. Located a few blocks from Rome’s central Termini train station, Fiddler’s was established in 1976, long before mainland Europe embraced the now ubiquitous Irish pub. These days the pub in the city’s Monti district is fronted by Conor Bottigliero, 42, together with business partners Hiro Morita from Japan and Orazio Cancanelli from Rome.

Fiddler’s was founded by Conor’s Roman father Gino Bottigliero and Irish mother Mary Pyne, alongside original partners Cancanelli and Antonio Shorthose. The 50th anniversary is a bittersweet occasion as Gino is gravely ill but he has insisted that the celebrations go ahead regardless. Conor and Hiro came on board during the difficult post-covid era, spurring business by hosting regular live music, comedy nights and open-mic events which have attracted a younger crowd and increasingly more Italians. The novelties also extend to hard-to-find drinks from Ireland. “I’ve made a real push to focus on Irish products” - Conor says - “We have over 80 Irish whiskies, around 20 Irish gins, all sorts of ciders, and we are one of the few pubs in Rome with Smithwicks on draught.” Traditional Irish musicians have played a central role at Fiddler’s for 50 years, notably the renowned fiddler Fabio Scanzani, who was among the very first customers and who met his wife in the pub. Another legendary figure is John Armstead, a Kung Fu grandmaster and actor from the west of Ireland. Armstead, an imposing 83-yearold strongman known to all as “Big John”, has been a regular since the start.

Lifestyle For Conor, the pub is etched in his earliest childhood memories. “It was 1990, I was six years old and it was the Italy-Ireland match in the World Cup, I remember coming in here and it was one of the first invasions of Irish fans.” Early days The pub opened its doors on Via Sforza in the autumn of 1976. The idea came about when Gino worked with Shorthose, whose father was English, at Singapore Airlines in Fiumicino airport. Gino credits Shorthose as a “hugely important figure” in getting the pub off the ground, before he left for health reasons in 1979, and was replaced by English rock musician Richard Sherwood. Fiddler’s proved to be well ahead of the crowd, acting independently of Guinness marketing heads who opened a wave of Irish bars across Europe in the 1990s. Due to its growing number of customers, in 1979 the pub moved to its current address on nearby Via dell’Olmata 43, in the shadow of the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. Located on a quiet side-street between a convent and a police station, the new venue had its own stories even before the Fiddler’s Elbow sign was hung outside. A former trattoria once popular with the city’s Russian diaspora, it was said that Lenin had a meal here during a visit to Rome in 1911. Gino Bottigliero reminisces

card and was obliged to close one night a week. Gino said that early clients also included “American and Australian soldiers, left over from the Vietnam war – half crazy and a bit shocked.” The bar’s “most important” clientele, according to Gino, were priests and seminarians from Ireland and Britain, including noted traditional Irish musicians. There was enthusiastic support from the students of the Pontifical Irish College, as well as a handful from the Venerable English College, and the Benedictines at Sant’Anselmo. However it was the Beda College, for older seminarians, that provided the most interesting characters, Gino maintains. Beda regulars allegedly included the nephew of Winston Churchill, the brother of a serving British Foreign Secretary, a descendant of Oliver Cromwell, and a man who gave up his string of night clubs to serve God. Exotic venue

Speaking to Wanted in Rome on the eve of the bar’s 40th anniversary in 2016, Gino recalled with nostalgic twinkle in his eye: “There were queues outside every night, we were packed from the start.”

Until the advent of the Fiddler’s Elbow, foreigners living in Rome had nowhere to go for a libation, let alone a pint of the black stuff. “The notion of meeting for a drink in the evening, outside of a restaurant, was unheard of in Rome at the time,” Gino said.

Its main customers were expats – many from the Food and Agriculture Organization – happy at the thought of a night of beer and banter. In those pre-internet days, tourists had difficulty finding the bar, which was initially classed as a “cultural association”, meaning it required a membership

It might be difficult to imagine for today’s readers, but in the 1970s the concept of an Irish pub in Rome, with Irish beer and authentic Irish trappings, would be the modern-day equivalent of opening a tea house with Tibetan monks or a restaurant offering delicacies from the Amazon jungle. “We Wanted in Rome • November 2026 | 5

were exotic,” Gino said with a sardonic chuckle, although he admitted that for some early customers the prospect of meeting foreign au pair girls was as enticing as quaffing a pint of stout. As Fiddler’s reputation grew, so began a glorious new era, a “super-boom”, Gino said: “We had a monopoly for years, from 1976 to 1986, even later.” The pub was the first in Rome to serve draft Guinness, in 1981, as well as the first to employ Irish staff, while the hordes of customers were vetted by bouncers, another first for the capital. In 1985 Fiddler’s availed itself of a loophole in its cultural association status that so long as it was not open all day, it could open seven nights a week. Several other Irish pubs followed suit, including Four Green Fields in Prati, which opened in 1980, and the Druid’s Den which Gino opened with his brother Tonino, around the corner on Via di San Martino ai Monti, in 1982. Colourful characters Over the years Fiddler’s has provided a refuge for some of the city’s most eccentric and interesting expat characters. 6 | November 2026 • Wanted in Rome

There was Tony Giannone, who ran an underground pub where people could drink while cheering over Bangkok-style boxing matches, or Séamus who consigned his shoes and socks to the bar owners each night, for safe-keeping, while he imbibed. Then there was “The Constable”, as he was nick-named, in honour of his jolly disposition, rotund figure and “laughing policeman” moustache. It was only after his departure that his stunned name-givers learned that The Constable was in fact a secret service agent with MI6. Other intriguing customers included the art historian Lee Bimm, who swilled Bloody Marys while refusing to speak to fellow Americans. When an elderly and familyless Bimm was in his final months in 2010, the humanity of Fiddler’s Elbow came to the fore. A small but loyal circle of regulars would visit him on his death-bed and when he died the pub took care of his funeral. Fiddler’s has always been a magnet for journalists, including former CNN International anchorman Jim Clancy, who was a regular while at the Rome bureau in the 1980s and 1990s and who once introduced the pub to CNN chief international correspondent Christiane Amanpour.

Lifestyle However the journalist best associated with the pub was Derek Wilson. Hard-living but always dapper and polite, Wilson’s name preceded his arrival in Rome in the mid1980s. Wilson had continued to file news from South Vietnam after the fall of Saigon – among other precarious postings such as Buenos Aires under the military dictatorship – before settling for a quieter life in Monti, where he spent his days writing articles for Wanted in Rome. Since his death in 2007 his framed obituary from The Times rests opposite the bar where he so often sat. Celebrities Over the decades, numerous celebrities have passed through the pub’s doors including tennis star John McEnroe, the behatted British singer Jay Kay of Jamiroquai fame, and former Irish prime minister Bertie Ahern, along with big-name Irish rugby players. During the 1980s the pub welcomed the cast of Dallas for extended periods while it filmed scenes in Italy, and in 1993, while filming Cliffhanger, Hollywood A-lister Syl-

vester Stallone hired the bar’s staff to serve his private birthday party at Rome’s Hilton Hotel. Irish culture and sport Fiddler’s hosts regular cultural events, with particular emphasis on Irish music and literature. Professor John McCourt, Rector of the University of Macerata describes it as “one of Rome’s great Irish cultural institutions”, praising its important role in supporting conferences of Irish studies and organising “lively, entertaining celebrations of Irish writing.” In terms of sport, Fiddler’s is the official sponsor of the Rome Hibernia GAA club with whom the pub has “built up a very good relationship”, Conor says. The club, which plays Gaelic football and hurling, holds its board meetings in the pub and brings along visiting teams. Fiddler’s also attracts regular returning customers, for sporting events such as the Six Nations rugby as well as for more personal reasons. “You’d be surprised at the amount of couples who met each other here, and all the old staff from over the years who keep coming back” - Conor says - “they all have really good memories of this place”. Despite changes in drinking habits and challenges in the era of “super pubs”, the Fiddler’s Elbow is a bastion of quiet eccentricity and old-world charm. Marinated slowly by generations of Romans and anglophones, it remains a welcoming oasis where Italian and expat culture, humour and traditions collide. As for the future, the plan is to “keep Fiddler’s going for at least another 50 years” Conor says - “I feel like this is really a piece of history that will continue.” This is an updated version of an article published by Wanted in Rome in January 2017 on the pub’s 40th anniversary. The Roma Jazz Festival, now in its 50th year and dedicated to Miles Davis, offers jazz concerts by Italian and international acts on dates between 1 and 24 November.

The month kicks off with a national public holiday in Italy for All Saints’ Day which this year falls on Sunday 1 November.

Rome’s municipal rose garden on the slopes of the Aventine Hill overlooking the Circus Maximus will be open for free every day until 8 November, from 08.30 to 17.30, to allow visitors to admire the autumn blooms.

ovember in Rome is traditionally a quieter time to visit the Eternal City however there are plenty of cultural events as the capital enjoys the last weeks of autumn and edges closer to the start of Christmas season.

The holiday coincides with free entry to state- and city-run museums and archaeological sites in Rome, with free entry also on 4 November to mark National Unity and Armed Forces Day, a national day in Italy but not a public holiday.

VILLA ADA This park was originally the home of King Victor Emmanuel III during the first half of the 20th century. It now houses the Egyptian embassy and consulate. The park is also a training ground for athletes, a concert stage for music-lovers, and a haven for locals from all that is hectic. The park hosts the long-running Incontra il Mondo festival of world music each summer. Its landscape is partly wooded and there is a lake with canoeing. In addition, the park’s 67m-high Monte Antenne gives hikers a panoramic view as well as access to an archaeological site which uncovered the ruins of an 1870 fort. Area: Salario. PARCO DEGLI ACQUEDOTTI This 240-hectare green space, tucked in the Appia Antica regional park, is known for possessing over half of the 11 major ancient Roman aqueducts and it takes around two hours to walk the whole network. The park's Villa Vignacce was built between the second and fourth centuries AD most likely by the brick-maker Q. Servilius Pudens. You can even see Pudens’ stamp on some of the bricks, a rarity as buildings were usually constructed so the stamps were not visible. Another architectural highlights is the Casale di Roma Vecchia, a house-tower that was likely used as part of a coaching inn during the 13th century. There is also the burial chamber of the “tomb of a hundred steps” along with some of Via Latina’s paving stones. Area: Appia Antica. PARCO DELL'APPIA ANTICA This wedge-shaped piece of land stretches over an impressive 3,400 hectares, and encompasses the rural estates Tormarancia and Farnesiana, Tor Fiscale’s green area, the Caffarella valley and 16 km of the ancient consular road, as well as various natural and man-made attractions. Its location adjacent to the Alban Hills makes it a biological hub and a favourite place for nature lovers. The park is closed to private traffic but can be explored by taking numerous bicycle and walking tours. In additon to the Caffarella valley, the principal sites include the Porta S. Sebastiano, Cecilia Metella, Circo di Massenzio, and a ride up Via Appia Antica. Other places of interest are the Museo delle Mura, the church of S. Urbano, the Basilica of St Sebastian and its catacombs, the St Callixtus catacombs, the Circus and Villa of Maxentius, the Mausoleum of Romulus, the Caetani Castle, and the Villa Quintili and aqueduct. Area: Appia Antica. VILLA BORGHESE Founded on 85 hectares and five centuries of history, Villa Borghese

stretches from Via Veneto to the heart of Parioli. It began as a 16th-century vineyard until Pope Paul V’s nephew, Cardinal Scipione Borghese, made it a private park. The Borghese family handed over ownership of the park to the city in 1903. The Pincian hill, or Pincio, is located on the edge of Piazza del Popolo, and offers stunning views of the capital. Pincio's gardens and staircases were laid out in 1809-14 according to designs by Giuseppe Valadier. Bikes and rickshaws can be rented throughout the park which contains the city's zoo, known as the Bioparco. It also plays host to one of the biggest equestrian events in Rome each May at the Piazza di Siena. The park is best known for housing the Galleria Borghese, home to one of the world's finest art collections with sculptures by Bernini and Canova, and paintings by Caravaggio, Correggio, Raphael and Titian. There is also another museum in the park's orangery: the Museo Carlo Bilotti, Aranciera di Villa Borghese, whose collection includes 18 works by de Chirico. The park contains a recreation of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre which stages an annual Shakespeare festival; the state-of-the-art Casa del Cinema which screens Italian classics and holds foreign film festivals; and the world’s smallest cinema, the Cinema dei Piccoli. There is also a small artificial lake, known as the laghetto, where visitors can go boating. Area: centre. VILLA CELIMONTANA This 110,00-sqm park is situated between the Colosseum and the Baths of Caracalla. In 1553 the Mattei family purchased the land, to construct a villa, and subsequently created the beautiful garden, decorated with exotic plants, bas-reliefs and rich historical artistry. Designed by Michelangelo’s student, Giacomo del Duca, the villa boasts 16th-century fountains, a neo-gothic temple and an obelisk dedicated to Egyptian pharaoh Rameses II, which is rumoured to hold the ashes of Emperor Augustus. Confiscated by the Italian government during world war one, the property is now the home of the Italian Geographical Society and is open to the public. The park can be entered from either Piazza SS. Giovanni e Paolo or from Piazza della Navicella. Area: Celio. VILLA GLORI Villa Glori sits on a hill between the districts of Parioli and Flaminio and looks down over the Auditorium Parco della Musica. The park is dedicated as a memorial for all Romans who have given up their lives for Italy. In 1867, a battle took place in Vincenzo Glori’s vineyard, where the Cairoli brothers led 70 fighters against the papal troops.

The pope’s forces defeated the rebel group and the scattered survivors fled to join Garibaldi’s army. In 1923 Rome decided to make the park a memorial park to all the victims of world war one, later re-dedicating the park to all Romans who died for their country. Area: Parioli. VILLA PAMPHILJ Comprising 184 hectres, this is Rome's largest landscaped public park. Located in the Monteverde district, the park is divided in two by Via Leone XIII, with numerous entrances on the surrounding roads. One of the best-preserved villas, the Villa Pamphilj house was recently restored for government receptions. Purchased by Pamfilio Pamphilj in 1630, the estate was later developed by Pope Innocent X who commissioned the architects Algardi and Grimaldi to design a larger villa, which was completed in 1647. The Italian state purchased part of the land in 1957 and, after numerous additional acquisitions, opened the park to the public in 1972. There is the Casino del Bel Respiro, which hosts international meetings and state receptions; the Garden Theatre, designed for outdoor performances; and the Villino Corsini, which is the seat of the Casa dei Teatri. You can also see the Aqua Traiana aqueduct which now supplies the many fountains in the park, the Fontanone on the Gianicolo as well as fountains in Trastevere. The Vivi Bistrot cafè and restaurant is located in the heart of the park and there are numerous walking trails and bike paths. Area: Monteverde. VILLA SCIARRA The Villa Sciarra is located on the slopes of the Janiculum. The villa changed hands many times, and was given its current title when it was acquired by the Colonna di Sciarra family in 1811. It was severely damaged during the 1849 fighting between Garibaldi and the papal forces at Porta S. Pancrazio nearby. In 1902 a wealthy American couple, George Wurts and Henriette Tower, reassembled and restored the estate and renovated rthe house in the neo-renaissance style. After Wurts’ death, Tower donated the villa to the Italian state as a public park in 1932. The 70,000 sqm-estate, which hosts the Italian Institute of Germanic Studies, features exotic examples of topiary shaped to resemble animals and a garden representing the months of the year. One of Rome's smaller and lesser-known parks, the villa can be accessed at Via Dandolo 47. Area: Monteverde.

EXHIBITIONS EUR: UNA STORIA LUNGA 90 ANNI 6 NOV-7 FEB

An exhibition at Rome’s EUR district will trace nine decades of one of the capital’s most distinctive neighbourhoods, from its origins as a planned world fair site to its present-day role as a business and cultural centre. EUR – Una storia lunga 90 anni will be held at the Palazzo Uffici, the rationalist building which was the first permanent structure completed for the Rome Universal Exposition. The show marks 90 years since the founding of the Ente Esposizione Universale di Roma. Visitors will see photographs, historical documents, architectural plans, sketches, archive material, period film and immersive installations chronicling life in the district, from its pre-war “E42” origins as the proposed site of the 1942 world fair, to its post-war development. Salone dei Disegnatori, Palazzo Uffici, Largo K. Adenauer.

TITIAN

20 OCT-8 DEC

A major altarpiece by Titian has travelled from Treviso to the Galleria Borghese, where it is being shown alongside the museum’s own works by the Venetian master. Tiziano. Dialoghi tra Sacro e Profano, curated by Maria Giovanna Sarti, marks 450 years since the artist’s death in 1576. The star of the show is the Annunciation from Treviso Cathedral, which has been temporarily removed from its home while the Pordenone frescoes in the Malchiostro Chapel are restored. The panel has itself recently been conserved, revealing an inscription bearing the date, the artist’s signature and a reference to the commissioner. It hangs in the Titian room next to the museum’s permanent holdings, in particular Sacred and Profane Love. The two paintings, made at almost the same time but very different in subject and purpose, are used to explore the depic-

EWA JUSZKIEWICZ: AURA 18 OCT-21 FEB

A new exhibition at PM23, the cultural venue of the Fondazione Valentino Garavani e Giancarlo Giammetti, sets the work of the celebrated couturier alongside that of contemporary painter Ewa Juszkiewicz.

AURA is the foundation’s third show at the Piazza Mignanelli space, near the Spanish Steps. The exhibition looks at the threshold where something familiar takes on a new form, creating a space between reality and imagination. It brings together 38 dresses chosen from the Maison Valentino archives and 26 paintings by Juszkiewicz. The highlight is A PORTRAIT in VALENTINO RED, which takes as its starting point a gown from Valentino’s Autumn/Winter 2007-08 Haute Couture collection, in the designer’s signature red. PM23, Piazza Mignanelli 23, is open daily from 11.00

FOOD: IL GUSTO NELL’ARTE FROM 17 OCT

Rome’s Chiostro del Bramante stages an ambitious exhibition exploring the multi-layered relationship between art and food throughout human history. Curated by former Tel Aviv Museum of Art director Suzanne Landau, the exhibition examines food not merely as physical nourishment, but as a universal creative medium, a cultural symbol, and an expression of identity and shared memory. The exhibition invites visitors to reconsider the everyday act of dining through ritual, social communion and artistic transformation, with the works on display bringing historical artworks into direct dialogue with contemporary artistic research, installations, design and objects. From the 16th century to the contemporary scene, and from still lifes to large-scale installations, the exhibited works reveal the complexity of a theme that has accompanied human creativity throughout time. The exhibition has sections dedicated to still life, the body, the table and kitchen, memory, play, design, global exchange, ecology, and cinema, fostering a dialogue between diverse artistic works and languages. Chiostro del Bramante, Via della Pace 5, www.chiostrodelbramante.it.

PONTORMO 9 OCT-7 FEB

The Scuderie del Quirinale hosts the first major monographic exhibition devoted to Jacopo da Pontormo (1494-1557). Pontormo was a leading figure of the 16th-century Florentine school, embodying the shift from the High Renaissance to Mannerism. His eccentric reworking of classical models secured him a devoted following in the 20th century, inspiring figures as diverse as Pier Paolo Pasolini and Bill Viola, while collectors worldwide have long prized his work. He also remains a firm favourite with the wider public, thanks to the striking originality of his creative vi-

sion. Visitors to the Rome exhibition will be able to see Pontormo’s key masterpieces reunited alongside an exceptional selection of works on paper. Centre stage goes to Pontormo’s celebrated Visitation, on loan from the Church of San Michele Arcangelo in Carmignano, near Prato. Together with a substantial number of loans from the Uffizi, further exceptional pieces will arrive from institutions including the Accademia Gallery, the Bargello Museums, the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica, the Louvre, National Gallery in London, British Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art in Washington, Art Institute of Chicago, and the Getty Museum. The exhibition is curated by Cristina Acidini, a leading authority on the Florentine Cinquecento, supported by a team of distinguished scholars. Scuderie del Quirinale, Via Ventiquattro Maggio 16, www.scuderiequirinale.it.

KEITH HARING 6 OCT-11 APRIL

Rome presents a comprehensive retrospective dedicated to the late American artist and social activist Keith Haring at Palazzo Braschi. The exhibition features more than 140 works, on loan predominantly from the prestigious Nakamura Keith Haring Collection. Best known for the graffiti-like drawings

of his early period, Haring later turned to a wide range of references. Before his death at 31 in 1990 from AIDS, he became also widely known for his social activism, concentrated on drugs, racism, nuclear armament, AIDS and discrimination. Rooted in the turbulent, predigital landscape of 1980s New York, the showcase traces Haring’s career from early Subway Drawings to his final creations, reflecting his core conviction that “art is for everybody.” The thematic layout explores transit art, political activism, bodily vitality, and symbolic imagery. Key sections highlight Haring’s intense engagement with urgent social issues - such as antiracism, LGBTQ+ rights, and the AIDS crisis - alongside vibrant, fluorescent representations of human connection. Crucially, the display examines Haring’s historic connection to Italy, documenting projects in Naples, Milan, Pisa and Rome. Ephemeral transit works created in Rome in 1984, long since lost, are preserved here through Stefano Fontebasso De Martino’s photography. Palazzo Braschi, Piazza di S. cated to Rembrandt van Rijn, one of the greatest printmakers in art history. The show brings together around 50 works on loan from public and private collections, exploring the Dutch artist’s pioneering use of etching. The exhibition traces themes of light and shadow, the sacred and the everyday, selfportraits and scenes of daily life, through which Rembrandt probed the depths of the human psyche. Among the highlights is the etching Self-Portrait with Saskia, which features on the exhibition’s pro-

motional artwork. The show opens with a sequence of Rembrandt’s finest etched self-portraits, in which the artist tested the expressive possibilities of the medium alongside his own psychological exploration. The Museo Storico della Fanteria is located at Piazza di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme 9. It is open Monday to Friday from 09.30 to 19.30, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 09.30 to 20.30, with last admission 30 minutes before closing. Tickets are available online via www.ticketone.it.

His work contributed to the passing of the 1991 framework law on protected areas. Through television, books, articles, school visits and activities in the WWF Oasi network, Pratesi introduced generations of Italians to the natural world, arguing that conservation begins with knowledge and attention to one’s surroundings. The works on display reflect the same impulse that underpinned that activism: observing, recording and defending the natural world. Migratory birds, wolves, bears, cetaceans, sea turtles, fish and Mediterranean

fauna recur throughout, combining scientific precision with a sense of wonder. Many of the species depicted belong to the ecosystems Pratesi helped to safeguard. Museo di Roma in Trastevere, Piazza di S. Egidio 1/b, www.museodiromaintrastevere.it.

KANDINSKY

15 SEPT-14 FEB

Palazzo Bonaparte opens its autumn season with a retrospective devoted to abstract artist Vassily Kandinsky, the first such exhibition in Italy in more than 25 years. Paris museum’s temporary closure for restoration. Curated by Angela Lampe, the exhibition unfolds across five sections tracing Kandinsky’s journey from a lawyer in Moscow to a leading figure of the European avant-garde. Highlights include two of his most celebrated compositions, Yellow-Red-Blue (1925) and Black Arc (1912), works that reveal Kandinsky’s belief that painting could resonate like music and speak directly to the soul. There is also a dedicated section on Gabriele Münter, shown in Italy for the first time. Long overshadowed by her role as Kandinsky’s partner, Münter is presented here in her own right as a key figure of Expressionism, following renewed international interest in her work. The exhibition is further enriched by period photographs, personal letters and biographical material. Palazzo Bonaparte, Piazza Venezia 5, www.mostrepalazzobonaparte.it.

DIEGO RIVERA 9 JUNE-13 DEC

The Capitoline Museums’ Villa Caffarelli in Rome hosts a retrospective titled Diego Rivera and the Construction of Modern Art in Mexico in the 20th Century. Promoted by the city of Rome and the Mexican embassy in Italy, the exhibition positions Rivera at the nexus of a visual and conceptual narrative, charting how modern Mexican art engineered an autonomous identity by balancing academic tradition with bold avant-garde experimentation. Curated by Miguel Fernández Félix and Alberto González Torres, the retrospective comprises more than 140 works, including 30 pieces by Rivera himself. It also features works by his contemporaries, including Frida Kahlo, José María Velasco, María Izquierdo, and fellow muralists José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros. The display is further enriched by documentary videos and evocative photographs, notably Rivera’s portraits captured by Tina Modotti. Capitoline Museums, www.museicapitolini.org.

CULTURE NEWS SANT’IVO ALLA SAPIENZA REOPENS

The Roman church of Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture designed by Francesco Borromini, reopened to the public on 27 October after many years of closure. The magnificent church stands within the Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza complex, which houses the state archive of Rome, and is one of Borromini’s most celebrated works. The former seat of the Sapienza university is located on Corso del Rinascimento 40, near the Italian senate. In recent years Rome’s special superintendence oversaw the restoration of the complex which was designed by Borromini between 1643 and 1660 for La Sapienza. T he site can be visited for free Monday to Friday, 09.30 to 13.30. The reopening is the result of a collaboration between the state archive, the Diocese of Rome and the Touring Club Italiano (TCI). Employing concave and convex surfaces in his sixpointed star-shaped plan, Borromini based his unique geometrical design around the cramped 16th-century cortile, or courtyard, designed by Giacomo della Porta.

Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza

The occupation deteriorated from a lively cultural space into an informal residential squat, eventually prompting the city to reclaim the building on safety grounds. Now restored to its former glory, Teatro Valle is the fourth venue in the Teatro di Roma network, alongside Teatro Argentina, Teatro India and Teatro Torlonia.

GALLERIA BORGHESE MOVES AHEAD WITH EXPANSION PLANS

TEATRO VALLE REOPENS

Rome’s historic Teatro Valle reopened on 16 October, following a prolonged closure and an extensive restoration, with a production based on Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author, which received its world premiere on that same stage on 9 May 1921. Pirandello’s absurdist, groundbreaking work explores the blurred line between reality and fiction by presenting six unfinished dramatic characters who interrupt a theatre rehearsal, demanding that their tragic story be performed. When it premiered in 1921, rioting theatregoers famously shouted “manicomio” (madhouse), however within months the play was enchanting audiences around the world. Teatro Valle, described as Europe’s oldest modern theatre, dates to 1726 and was commissioned by the Capranica family. It was designed by Tommaso Morelli, with its interior and exterior later redesigned in the 19th century by Italian architects including Valadier and Salvi. It closed in 2010 before being occupied for three years, from 2011 to 2014, over rumours that it was to be privatised.

Galleria Borghese. Photo credit: Luciano Romano.

Rome’s Galleria Borghese has launched an international architecture competition to find ways of increasing the museum’s space, accessibility and services. The contest is sponsored by Proger, the Italian engineering firm, with the backing of Rome city council, and follows months of debate over the idea of building near the 17th-century site in Villa Borghese park. Entrants may propose a new building or the redesign of existing structures, with a maximum surface area of 3,000 square metres, including outdoor works. The aim is to ease pressure on the villa that houses the stellar art collection - including masterpieces by Bernini, Caravaggio and Raphael - and to improve access for people with disabilities and school groups. The competition has two phases and is run online through the platform of the Rome Order of Architects. The first phase is open to all qualified professionals, individually or in groups. Applications must be submitted by 13 November. A maximum of five finalists will then submit anonymous designs by 18 March 2027. An independent jury will name the winner by 14 May 2027. The winner will receive €500,750 as both prize and fee for completing a technical and economic feasibility study. The other four finalists will receive €25,000 each.

PIZZA MARGHERITA

HOW TO MAKE GREAT PIZZA AT HOME Making your own pizza from scratch is a surefire way to impress and is a fun activity to do with friends and family. This recipe is a simple way to make great pizza at home using a domestic kitchen oven and, while the result may not be exactly like a real Roman pizzeria, it allows you to unleash your creativity and add whatever toppings you choose. Although the process of making the dough and leaving it to rise takes a while, this can be done in advance, so the actual topping and cooking of the pizza takes a matter of minutes. Cooking the base by itself for a few minutes before turning it over and adding the toppings will ensure a crunchy, non-soggy, crust, as will draining as much liquid as possible out of the mozzarella before using. The quantities below will make enough pizza for about 4 people, but you can use whatever size and shape of metal baking tin you have at home.

For the base: 500g flour 00 1 x 7g sachet of dried yeast 3 pinches of salt 1 pinch of sugar 350ml water Extra virgin olive oil

For the topping: 4 x 250g balls of mozzarella (fior di latte) 1 large jar of tomato passata Fresh basil leaves Sieve the flour into a large bowl. Add the yeast, salt and sugar and pour in the water. Mix everything together with a fork, once the dough starts to come together, tip it onto a floured board or work surfaced. Continue to knead with your hands, constantly pushing the dough back onto itself, until you have a soft, elastic consistency. If the dough is too wet, add a little flour; if it is too dry add a little more water or a drop of olive oil. In a clean bowl pour in about 4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Place the ball of dough into the bowl, cover with plastic cling film and put the bowl into the oven (turned off) or a dark cupboard. Leave it to prove for at least 3 hours until the dough has doubled in size. Once the dough has risen, tip it back onto a floured surface along with the oil. Knead it well until the texture is smooth and soft. Divide the dough into pieces (the size depends on the baking tins you have and how thick you want the base of your pizza) and leave it to rest while you prepare the topping. Turn the oven on to heat to its highest temperature. Pour the passata into a bowl, add a splash of olive oil and a pinch of salt and mix well. Cut the mozzarella into cubes and use your hands to squeeze out as much liquid as possible to ensure that the pizza will not be soggy. Grease the baking tins with olive oil. Push the dough into the tins using your hands, try not to create any holes. Put the pizza into the lowest part of the oven and cook for 5-8 minutes then turn the base over in the tin. Spread the passata over the pizza and add some mozzarella and a drizzle of olive oil then place the pizza back into the low shelf of the oven for about 5 more minutes until the edges are crispy and the mozzarella has melted. Add a few fresh basil leaves and serve immediately.

CICLOSTAZIONE FRATTINI If you’re on the hunt for a place in the Portuense district where you can sit outside and let your kids run about, Ciclostazione Frattini should be your go-to brunch spot. PORTO FLUVIALE This crowded Ostiense restaurant offers a buffet brunch menu containing around 60 dishes: hot and cold pasta dishes, soups, raw salads and cooked vegetable dishes, meats, and cheeses served with a variety of tasty dips and sauces.
