A continual influx of working individuals has become vital for the city's rapid growth. The city relies on a constant supply of electricity, contributed by the migrant population. However, the development process involves dismantling the very corners crucial for the survival of these migrants. Despite being integral to the city's development, they struggle to establish an identity and are treated as if in a perpetual state of transition, lingering despite having arrived.

The recovery of the broken terrace and village The Honghe Hani Terraces in Yunnan, China, a UNESCO World Heritage site, showcase ethnic groups' ingenuity, especially the Hani, adapting to local conditions. Yet, societal changes diminish their significance, and the Hani, less reliant on the terraces, neglect maintenance. Many face collapse, risking the loss of a spiritual legacy as the older generation passes on.

A community supply system supported by new energy sources Longgang District in Shenzhen holds development potential, yet its mountainous terrain restricts movement. This project aims to revitalize the district by introducing urban plug-ins, diversifying industries, and implementing a green transportation system. Residents can earn eco-friendly points for services within the plug-in community. Longcheng Street serves as the pilot, with plans for broader expansion to enhance the industrial landscape and residents' quality of life.

Survival challenge game for the people of Tuvalu Tuvalu, with an average elevation of � meters, faces a looming threat from global temperature rise and rising sea levels. This game project aims to involve players in the redevelopment of Tuvalu's living spaces, highlighting the challenges of gaining international support. The broader objective is to raise awareness globally about the imminent threat, recognizing that we are all climate refugees in the making.

A constant flow of people who have to earn a living have become an integral part of the rapidly growing city. The city cannot develop without a constant flow of electricity (the contribution of the migrant population), while the process of development involves the dismantling of the corners on which the migrant population depends for its survival. They are an integral part of the city's development process, but they are unable to acquire an identity, as if they are forever treated as if they were in a state of transition, still floating despite having arrived in the city.

The chosen site is in the gap of an overpass only ����m from the village of Gui Miao, which was left unused because it could not be used for other urban functions. At the same time, it has a similar living circle to the original site.

Guimiao Village contributed a large amount of land to support the construction of Shenzhen University in the ����s. In the ����s, the village also contributed land to support the demand for land for high-tech industries in Nanshan. Over a long period of time, the inhabitants of the village gradually changed from indigenous people to a transient population from various regions. The convenient living conditions and low rents here allowed people to ignore the crowded and dense living conditions.

The village of Gui Miao began in the Qing Dynasty, and it is said that when the ancestors of the village came to build the village, a turtle was dug out of the ground and a new temple was built.

The village of Gui Miao was relocated several times because of the war and has since settled on its present site, which has a ���-year-old banyan tree.

After the reform and opening up, the value of the land here rose. The original inhabitants began to build houses in order to rent them out to outsiders, while leaving the village themselves.

After the expansion of Shenzhen University, Gui Miao Village accommodated part of the student dormitory and also built many business parks.

Graduating students have also chosen to live here.

Gui Miao Village has been scheduled for demolition The mobile population has been forced to give up low-cost housing and convenient living conditions to find new places to stay.

Urban Processes and Demographics of Shenzhen

Gui Miao Village is one of the oldest urban villages in Shenzhen, and its long history has produced a lot of things that carry memories. With the development of the city, the original inhabitants of Guimiao Village have almost moved out of the area, which is now mostly populated by transient people who rent rooms. It has a lively scene that is very different from the bustle of the city. Being close to Shenzhen University, students are also an important group of people moving around here. However, due to urban construction, Gui Miao Village, like other urban villages, is at risk of being demolished.

Guimiao Village Constituent Household Type As the venue for the ���� Shenzhen-Hong Kong Urban Biennale, the ancient city of Nan Tou was revitalised. The area became a creative bazaar after the exhibition, attracting many visitors.

The cultural and sports centre serves the residents of this area, which is easily accessible thanks to the metro and bus station on the doorstep, and therefore has many visitors.

The office space near the school can provide jobs for recent graduates and is also the most convenient option for the transient population of Gui Miao Village.

The city park is an essential recreational space here, enhancing the greenery of this dense area. It is able to provide a beautiful landscape to the site.

Problems as Challenges The existing village is dominated by ����s self-built houses, distributed at a high density, with very narrow street spaces. The village stones, large banyan trees, pagodas and promenades left from ancient times are recognised as historical artefacts by the villagers. It is also only around these sites that there are scattered public spaces that gather the villagers and are places that hold their collective memories. Their construction periods are unknown and their locations are scattered in the middle of the village, coincidentally forming a scattered layout of public spaces. This is also a rule hidden in the logic of the natural generation of the village.

The Dilemma of Immigrants

Guimiao people like to weave products, and older women will gather to make them, and the finished products will be sold, and the money earned will be used to subsidize the family.

The sites for urban construction are about to run out, so the government has chosen to demolish some of the urban villages. But it has deprived the mobile population, who make up the majority of the urban workforce, of their living circle. The government and the landlords agree on the demolition, and both parties benefit while the interests of these working people are ignored.

Current Situation Land appreciation and the creation of a large number of low-cost housing units in urban villages. Foreigners live here temporarily to reduce the cost of living and to find better jobs, creating more value. Despite the dense and crowded living environment, the advantages of cheap and convenient housing cannot be ignored.

Breeze Gallery is the main place for villagers to gather, where they can see the daily recreational activities of residents, and also a gathering point for various gathering activities. It's a local landmark.

Lion dance is a traditional activity here, and every year the village organizes to participate in national competitions. It is an effective way to exercise and socialize.

Cantonese Guangdong. Due to the preserved ancestral hall and stage of Ye family in the village, performances and Opera competitions are held at certain times of the year.

Where They Go? As their settlements are demolished, migrants face new dilemmas: giving up their jobs to return home or raising the cost of living to rent more expensive homes. They may have an identity here, but the environment doesn't show that identity. Life in the city has set them apart from their hometown, but they are not fully accepted by the city.

New Living Village The ground floor of the business has a special height, as the ground floor is too high for living and is divided into two floors, but because there is not enough space for a staircase it is connected by a simple vertical ladder, and only on the first floor are goods or sundries stored. As the ground floor is too small, most of the tenants try to expand their business area to the outside. The tables, chairs and trolleys that can be seen everywhere "encroach" on the already small street, but add to its lively atmosphere.

Handshake buildings in high-density urban villages have balconies almost connecting from both sides, leaving only a single floor space for passage. The limited natural light in these areas may create a sense of being submerged underground.

Ancestral Temple Layout

Prototype Thanks to traditional culture such as lion dances and Cantonese opera, the village's ancestral hall and theatres have not fallen into disuse, but have remained for decades and have become a place for socialising and relaxing. In addition to the daily performances, there are also modern craft fairs and exhibitions.

The characteristic ternary layout of the ancestral hall divides the space into different parts and can accommodate different activities at the same time.

This spatial combination can be used to reconstruct the public space in the high-density tower by combining the extracted elements.

Part of the walls and gray space of the ancestral hall are retained to restore the original life scenes and activities, and modern building materials are added. Keep entrances in all directions to increase accessibility. Due to the climate, a retractable sunshade canopy is added to the top to create an all-weather leisure place.

Corridors Prototype The Qingfeng Corridor was originally an important public space in Gui Miao Village, and was able to provide a place for people to stay and rest during stormy weather. It is a way of connecting space to space as well as creating and enclosing space. This combination is used to connect horizontally and vertically, combining other buildings and spaces.

The reconfigured connections preserve the all-weather promenade and increase the walking area. Transport interchanges are placed as a way for residents to commute.

Vertical Connection

Longitudinal lifts connect the first and last ends of the tower, providing fast and convenient vertical access.

The vertical connection to the public space portfolio has more corners and grey space.

Embedding a short walk between layers into the unit enables connections up to three layers to be resolved.

Ever-growing Monument In the context of the inevitable demise of urban villages, it might be a good idea to promote the use of such "towers". They are a form of skyscraper that blends into the city and has its own unique character.

They fit in with the high density, efficiency and variety of the city's skyline, but have more of a human story than the glamorous modern but cold skyscrapers. Elements of the old village are preserved and integrated without reservation, and transient people from all over the world settle here. The tower could be increased in height indefinitely, and its stellar but prominent position in the city could also show the role of the transient population in the development of the city cannot be ignored. Perhaps this could be a way of recognising the identity of the mobile population.

The "mobile" population is not forced to drift here, they can choose whether to stay here or not and do not have to worry about being swallowed up by the city, it is their place.

In the inevitable urbanisation of the future, the different and diverse vertical urban villages will find their place in the city and become monuments to its history.

The Honghe Hani Terraces in China's Yunnan Province, a testament to the ingenuity of various ethnic groups, particularly the Hani, adapting to local conditions, are now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

However, as societal changes occur, the terraces, once vital for survival, are losing their significance.

The Hani people, with dwindling reliance on the terraces, are neglecting their maintenance. Many terraces face the threat of collapse and abandonment, risking the loss of the spiritual legacy tied to these ancient structures as the older generation passes on.

The "four elements of the water system" is a perfect reflection of the Hani ecological farming system. The forests at the top of the mountain nourish water, providing water for the villages on the hillside, and at the same time providing irrigation water for the terraced fields below the villages. Streams of water meet in the valleys of the lowlands to form rivers, which evaporate into clouds and send water back to the forest. The four elements are perfectly combined, and man and nature live in harmony.

The forest is the natural totem of the Hani people and is the object of their worship. The forest means sacred, guardian to them. At the same time, the forest is also a natural base for people to obtain resources for living.

The Red River terraces are a broken surface in the middle-low mountain deep cut area with very little flat land. At the same time, the tropical and subtropical monsoon climate brings abundant precipitation and heat to this area. Hani people living in Yuanyang through many years of farming practice, creative use of the unique natural conditions of this area to open up terraces on the slopes, engaged in terraced rice farming to form a unique subtropical mountain slope ecosystem.

Village Logic of Village Formation

Once the forest was selected, the villagers began to build a fortress to survive. Their survival is also dependent on the close connection of the four elements. In the village, there are ditches connecting the terraced fields and the forest, as well as wells that allow access to natural water. The prototype of Hani architecture is derived from the Tupa house, which is characterised by the materialisation of history and close proximity to nature.

Due to the development of the times, the young and strong labour force in the villages have left the terraced fields where their ancestors lived to make a living in the towns. The remaining women, children and elderly people in the village can no longer afford to maintain the huge terraces and live on the support of their families who have gone out to work.

The Hani people love the forest, worship it and protect it.

The forest is the mother of terraces and the cradle of the Hani people. Hani people put the safety of the village, the prosperity of the nation in the forest, the forest in the minds of the Hani people have the status of God. The Hani people are the first people in the world to advocate the protection of forests and the use of forests, and the first people to sprout ecological awareness.

Reserved Terrace The only remaining surviving and relatively intact terraces are dotted with scattered villagers.

Thanks to a small amount of crops and fertilisers, the terraces still maintain their former vitality and are able to produce food crops that meet the needs of the population at this time.

The terraces are the villagers' productive workplaces and an important part of the four elements of the same structure. The terraces are divided layer by layer by ridges to ensure flooding without being collapsed by sudden rainfall. The soil left over from the villagers' harvested crops can continue to repair the ridges and maintain the terraces. At the same time, excess water seeps into the land to join the underground runoff from the forest and flow into the river.

As the utilisation of the terraces declines and the area under cultivation is drastically reduced, the ridges, which are the main focus of terrace maintenance, lose their water retention without the aid of crops and are gradually washed away by rainfall and streams. The water washes away but cannot stay here. The barren land is also unsuitable for forest growth and becomes a wasteland.

Nullahs extending from the forest through villages and terraces to the river valleys are also a great way of dealing with stagnant water, unlike terraced pools which are more mobile. When the terraced ponds are overflowing, the nullahs can be opened in time to drain the water.

Future Terrace The restoration of the terraces is a long and iterative process, and the use of movable devices to "transform" the dwellings provides the conditions for their restoration by the inhabitants. Longgang District in Shenzhen shows promise for development, but its mountainous isolation severely limits movement in and out. Cross-district travel is low, and the area has a single-industry structure with scattered facilities and no planned transportation system. This project aims to enhance the district through urban plug-ins, introducing new industries and transportation modes to integrate with existing infrastructure. A green transportation system will be established, and residents can earn points through eco-friendly actions, redeemable for various services within the plug-in community. Longcheng Street in Longgang District serves as the pilot, with the goal of diversifying the industrial landscape and improving residents' lives, with potential for future expansion.

Building a folk museum on the vacant land in the village, incorporating a 'weaving' theme in texture and structure to signify the traditional weaving heritage of the village. The permanent exhibition hall showcases the historical changes of the site, while the activity hall hosts various handicraft exhibitions from the village. The museum includes teaching and broadcasting areas to accommodate diverse needs. Additionally, there is an underground passage, and the ground serves as a cultural park, providing a space for community activities.

This design is carried out after urban planning, selecting the office area. Following the urban design principles, a comprehensive building integrating commerce, garden offices, and recreational spaces is designed. The site adopts the concept of coastal containers, using large containers to encase smaller ones for office spaces. The small container offices can serve as small industrial incubation bases, while the space-negative parts can function as garden areas.
