ACCOMMODATING UNCERTAINTY AND ECOLOGYCICAL RESTORATION ON SHIFTING BARRIER BEACH, RI Location: Narragansett Bay, RI, US
The mismatch between the desire to construct permanent settlements on a migrating landscape in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island has led to a vulnerability of seaside communities built on barrier beaches. The project proposes a gradual retreat of the community from the beach, with the main aim of restoring the dunes ecology. The focus of this long-term plan is to consider the balance between rights of residence, topophilia and ecological protection. Inspired by the "nomadic" lifestyle of the Narragansett tribe in different seasons, the project proposes strategies to adapt to tides, seasons and stages of settlement.

SURVEY OF EXISTING FLOOD CONTROL
Barrier beaches are dynamic landscapes, with topography continuously reshaped by water and wind. A welldeveloped, migrating barrier beach system offers the most effective and sustainable defense, absorbing coastal energy and shielding areas from natural forces.
Permanent settlements not only face risks from natural disasters but also hinder the adaptive processes of these fragile environments.

PROPOSAL: GRADUALLY RETREAT
Retreat is not a process that can be completed overnight but must consider residents' property rights, economic interests, and emotional ties to coastal lands.
The Nomad Home proposal outlines a four-stage, seasonal, multigenerational retreat strategy that balances residents' needs with the natural reclamation of the land.

To that end, my team and I developed a master plan to improve the mental health of residents of West Providence, a low-income, high-crime neighborhood, called "Emotional Health Block", which includes a pedestrian-friendly community, connected spaces for gardening therapy, socializing, and aging social and sensory healing.
In the personal design part, I am responsible for a space near a nursing home, and it will provide a rich variety of social opportunities and physical exercise opportunities, as well as to cope with the future aging trend.

The site is located between nursing homes and a number of cultural facilities, with an existing weekend market.
The spaces where activities take place and the new activity spaces will be connected and paths will be introduced that take into account different walking speeds and ADA.While triggering more social opportunities, it will ensure the safety of the elderly walking.

The project aims to transfer an undeveloped semiwilderness riverfront land named Bensley Point as an experiential and poetic "game" where the cycle of life and death and the Geological Processes of New England are narrated to create a series of thought-provoking scenes. This encourages Mental Exercise, free navigation and active exploration, and is expected to resonate with visitors.

Low-cost Yard

Design for a 2095 sq ft side and backyard space and a family of four.
The homeowners sought a cost-effective solution to enhance underutilized entry areas, level the parking space, and secure privacy with fencing.
Two design options are provided, both preserving the existing vegetation. The narrow staircase leading to the building will be replaced with a more inviting deck, creating multiple entertainment zones suitable for small gatherings and seamlessly connecting the front and backyards. Privacy is considered by incorporating low-maintenance hedges and plant combinations to soften the fence and building boundaries.
The project is pending further modifications and upcoming construction.
Yanzi Lake Wetland Park

The project features natural selfcleaning apporaches for pollutant removal and restoring the riverbanks of Yanzi Lake River, which artificially altered by early urban construction and industrial needs, vegetation and watershed ecology.
SITE ANAYLSIS
SELF-CLEANING: PLANTS
Native Plants will be planted on ecological floating islands and transitional zones from the riverbank to the land.
Pollutants such as nitrogen and phosphorus can be filtered through the soil and taken up by plant roots.
SELF-CLEANING: RIVERBANK RECONSTRUCTION
By restoring the river's banks and natural flow patterns and the resilience of aquatic ecosystems, the water body's self-purification ability will be enhanced.
