The Book of Songs is a collection of Chinese poems and folk songs dating back to 200 B.C. “Swa mp’s Shore” is only one of the ver y beautiful love poems, chosen from the Airs of Chen I t is par ticularly attractive for its arb itra riness – is this a real man in the young lady’s life, whom she cannot be with? Pe rhaps this is a pleasurable fant asy she composed to entert ain her mundane reality? The beauty of this poem is that it doesn’t matter if the “ man so fair” is real What is mo re over whelming than the beautiful pain of unre qui ted love? What is mo re aching than yearning to be loved and to love?
