WAYS SantaRosa

Explore this city at your own pace and your own way. | By Matt Villano

From family time to outdoor wanderings, the city is ripe for adventuring.

Downtown Discovering

Start the day with breakfast at Marla Bakery in Railroad Square, where the sticky buns are great but the basic bread is even better. From there, stroll over to the Museum of Sonoma County, which maintains a permanent collection of 18,000-plus objects and hosts traveling exhibits. At lunchtime, grab a seat at the counter at Mac’s Deli & Cafe, the oldest continuously operating breakfast and sandwich cafe in Sonoma County. Next up: retail therapy at downtown boutiques such as Ooh La Luxe, Fiber Snob, and The Store Next Door. If you time your visit right, there might even be live music in Old Courthouse Square. End the evening with dinner at Belly Left Coast Kitchen & Taproom, where chef Gray Rollin has created a menu with Asian and Mexican influences.

Eastside Wanderings

A meal of coffee and fried dough at Johnny Doughnuts is a great way to start your day in east Santa Rosa, especially if there are freshly glazed apple fritters. Work off the extra calories by swimming or playing doubles pickleball at the Flamingo Resort & Spa. Next, it’s brunch time at Jeffrey’s Hillside Cafe, a Santa Rosa institution where chef Jeffrey Madura offers hash three ways (corned beef, duck, and vegetable). Later, head to Bennett Valley and hike the 2.3-mile loop at Spring Lake Regional Park before shopping at the new-and-improved Montgomery Village, an upscale outdoor mall. Cap the night with dinner at Monti’s, an AmericanMediterranean restaurant in Montgomery Village with a reputation for the best martinis in all of Santa Rosa.

Family Bonding

Rise and shine for an epic family day in Santa Rosa and grab a breakfast of eggs and pancakes at Dierk’s Parkside Cafe in the SOFA Arts District. From there, head to the west side for arcade games (and perhaps some bowling) at Poppy Bank Epicenter. After lunch and a mug of the world-famous hot chocolate at The Warm Puppy Café (inside Snoopy’s Home Ice rink), take the afternoon to tour Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center, which pays homage to the man behind the Peanuts cartoon. Make time to see The Children’s Museum of Sonoma County, then head straight to Mitote Food Park for dinner. For dessert, grab a paleta (Mexican-style popsicle) or a scoop of horchata ice cream at Frozen Art Gourmet Ice Cream, which is owned by a family from Tocumbo, the ice cream capital of Mexico.

So Good, It’s Criminal

In a region with some of the most well-regarded bakeries in all of California, Criminal Baking Company stands out as one of the best.

Located inside an old factory in the West End district, Criminal Baking Company is the brainchild of Dawn Zaft, a Santa Rosa native who started the bakery after years of making customorder cakes as a side gig.

Over the years, Zaft has attracted a cult following for one-ofa-kind treats such as baked oatmeal; the Bacon Bandit breakfast sandwich; and the bacon, apple, and cheddar scone. She also makes a mean short rib pot pie and a flaky-savory pastry called a boureka filled with spinach and feta cheese.

“People in Santa Rosa really value family-owned restaurants and a relationship-based approach to food,” says Zaft. “In most cases, if you find a family-owned restaurant, you can go in, feel comfortable, and also eat something amazing.”

While Zaft isn’t involved with the day-to-day operations, her custom cake business is still going strong. Fan favorites include the naturally vegan and gluten-free chocolate cake, a banana cream pie, and a carrot-pineapple cake Zaft has been making since the bakery first opened in its former location in 2012. Of course, she’s always adding new recipes, too.

“People like tradition but there’s always room to experiment,” she says. “That’s what makes the job fun.”

Outdoor Adventuring

Prepare for a day of fresh air with a breakfast of avocado or smoked salmon toast on the back patio at Café Frida in the SOFA neighborhood, then walk over to the Luther Burbank Home & Gardens for a tour of some of the plants famed horticulturist Luther Burbank cultivated during his time in Santa Rosa. Grab a chimichanga or California fries at El Patio, one of the city’s best Mexican joints, before heading to Bennett Valley for a lavender tour and wine tasting at Matanzas Creek winery. Following a twomile hike on Canyon Trail in the immense Trione-Annadel State Park, head over to the iconic Willi’s Wine Bar for tapas-style dishes (try the Mu Shu Bacon) and a wine list that rivals any in the county.

PEANUTS PEANUTS

ON PARADE

Follow Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and the Peanuts gang in Santa Rosa—and beyond.

Few places feel as delightfully connected to the world of Peanuts as Santa Rosa. Cartoonist Charles M. Schulz lived and worked here from 1958 until his death in 2000, drawing inspiration from the people and landscapes of Sonoma County. His legacy lives on in a beloved public art project—dozens of whimsically decorated character statues scattered across the region. The installation began with the original Peanuts on Parade in 2005, when 55 blank fiberglass statues were distributed to local artists and community groups to decorate. That creative momentum never stopped. Today, more than 130 unique versions of

Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Lucy, Woodstock, and friends can be found throughout Santa Rosa, with even more scattered across Sonoma County.

Each statue is one-of-a-kind, reflecting the artist’s interpretation through color, pattern, and personality. Part of the fun is simply spotting them: tucked near storefronts, brightening parks, or greeting you outside tasting rooms.

To make the search even easier, Visit Santa Rosa launched an interactive digital map. Updated by both staff and the public, it lets you see where statues were last reported and even log your own discoveries—a playful way to explore the city and experience Schulz’s enduring spirit.

Family Fun

From escape rooms to trampoline parks, Santa Rosa is an epic destination for kids of all ages.

Sonoma County might be known for wine, but Santa Rosa stands out as a great destination for families.

The city’s museum row near Coddingtown mall is a great place to spend an entire day. Start at The Children’s Museum of Sonoma County, a huge educational playground with outdoor water features, Mini Train Town, and exhibits that spark STEM curiosity through hands-on play. Grab a hot dog and fries at The Warm Puppy Café at Snoopy’s Home Ice, then rent some skates and work off lunch gliding around the ice rink. Later in the day, walk over to the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center and pay homage to Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and other Peanuts characters from the beloved comic strip.

For a more adventurous itinerary, get wild. First up: a 4x4 tour at Safari West, a sprawling animal park on the northeast side of Santa Rosa. The preserve is home to roughly 900 animals representing more than 90 species, from addaxes to zebras. From there, venture to the west side of the county and partake in the Tree Tops Tour from Sonoma Zipline Adventures. The 90-minute tour comprises seven zip lines that reach speeds of up to 40 mph, two sky bridges, and a 45-foot rappel down. Or, don some grippy socks and break out the backflips at the trampoline park inside Poppy Bank Epicenter, then go for some strikes at Chuck’s Bowling inside the same venue. Perhaps the biggest tests of fortitude can be found in two of

the city’s indoor climbing gyms: Session Climbing and Vertex Climbing Center Families who think together, grow together, and Santa Rosa has several attractions designed to get guests to use their noggins. Located in Santa Rosa Plaza , First Empire escape rooms offers three experiences, with one room designed to replicate a prison break. Another lesson in creativity and problem-solving, Spellcraft Curator offers six rooms, including ancient Egypt and the Renaissance, with puzzles, challenges, crafts, and prizes. (Dressing up is encouraged!)

Then, of course, there’s Spring Lake Regional Park’s Environmental Discovery Center, where visitors can get a little dirty while learning about the local ecosystem. For a quieter experience, rent a paddleboat and take it out on the lake at Howarth Park .

Embrace the Great Outdoors

Some of the best ways to explore Santa Rosa are by bike, foot, and more.

Cycling

Whether you like mountain biking dirt trails or long scenic road rides, Santa Rosa and its surroundings are ideal for adventures on two wheels.

The popular 2.1-mile Spring Lake Loop in Spring Lake Regional Park welcomes both road and mountain bikes, and is perfect for families and occasional riders. Heading west from downtown, the nearly flat, 8.5-mile Joe Rodota Trail runs from Santa Rosa to Sebastopol, with a portion of it following Santa Rosa Creek. More ambitious cyclists can continue their ride by taking West County Regional Trail to Graton and Forestville. Mountain bikers swear by Taylor Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve; the 3.9-mile Western Route is a moderately challenging ascent to the 1,095foot summit. On a clear day, the view from the top is spectacular, with unobstructed views for miles. Another great spot for fat-tire biking is Trione-Annadel State Park. The 5,000-acre open space has more than 45 miles of trails, some of which (like Rough Go Trail) make for challenging biking terrain. (Note: e-bikes are not allowed.)

Ride Time

If you prefer to ride in a group, Santa Rosa offers several options throughout the year.

The Santa Rosa Cycling Club welcomes riders on group outings and hosts

Friendly Friday Rides on the fourth Friday of every month. Biker Chicks, part of the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition, is dedicated to getting women on bikes and welcomes riders to join a ride on the third weekend of each month.

Local tour outfitter Getaway Adventures rents both

human-powered bicycles and e-bikes, and offers guided Sonoma County tours. If longer days on a road bike sound appealing, the Wine Country Century rolls past vineyards and scenic byways and comprises three long rides of varying lengths. And for something different, the weekly, community-led Taco Tuesday ride heads from Santa Rosa Junior College to Mitote Food Park and back.

PRO TIP Rent or demo a bike at the nearby Trail House, and end your ride with a pint or coffee at the shop’s ale house and espresso bar. 0.0278 in

Hiking

If anybody knows the best hiking trails in Santa Rosa, it’s Emily Podolak, a planner for Sonoma County Regional Parks. Heading out on trails is literally her job. And whenever she can, she brings along her assistant, a 90-pound goldendoodle named Blue. Here are some of Podolak’s faves.

Chart Your Course

Access trail maps and local recommendations through Visit Santa Rosa concierge services.

Taylor Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve

Podolak loves this park for its 15 miles of hiking trails and incredible views of Bennett Valley and greater Santa Rosa. Paths wind alongside creeks and through oak woodlands. “You can get a good workout very close to the city,” she says. Plus, the park recently opened 450 previously inaccessible acres to explorers.

WHEN TO GO: Dry seasons and early in the day to avoid direct sun in the afternoon

Hood Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve

About five miles east of Santa Rosa, this more than 3,600-acre park offers challenging hikes to high peaks, overnight campsites (some with yurts!), and what Podolak says are “stunning” views of Valley of the Moon.

WHEN TO GO: Spring and fall; trails are less traveled on weekdays

Spring Lake Regional Park

Accessibility is the name of the game at this 320-acre park; the main trail that rings the lake is flat and paved, and all-terrain wheelchairs are available. “There are so many opportunities [at Spring Lake],” Podolak says. And for a short time after Labor Day, the lagoon transforms into Water Bark, a dog-only swimming spot.

WHEN TO GO: Any time; swimming in the lagoon (for humans) is open Memorial Day through Labor Day

Trione-Annadel State Park

This sprawling park has more than 45 miles of trails through oak woodlands and chaparral. According to Podolak, Lake Ilsanjo is an ideal destination for hikers and a pristine place for a picnic. Another inside tip: A little-known overlook between the Orchard and Cobblestone trails offers a sublime view of Santa Rosa.

WHEN TO GO: Any time, though prepare for puddles after it rains

Laguna de Santa Rosa Trail

Adjacent to Sebastopol’s Laguna Wetlands Preserve, this park is a popular resting spot for local and migrating birds. Podolak says she loves visiting when the birds are singing. Trails here are almost entirely flat, and many provide distant views of Mount Saint Helena.

WHEN TO GO: Spring and fall; floods in winter

FOR THE DOGS

A dog’s day in the great outdoors Pups are allowed on leash at Spring Lake, Taylor Mountain, Hood Mountain, and Crane Creek regional parks. Other places for a tail-waggin’ good time: DeTurk Round Barn Park has a fenced-in dog park with shade; Doyle Community Park has separate runs for small and large dogs; and Rincon Valley Community Park offers shade and benches for the humans.

Taylor Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve

Parks& Rec

Santa Rosa’s recreation facilities are a home run.

It’s an all-around fun time at the playgrounds, tennis courts, and baseball fields at Galvin Community Park and Howarth Park Poppy Bank Epicenter is a hub for indoor soccer games and bowling. Ice skating is the main attraction at Snoopy’s Home Ice, which also hosts the Santa Rosa Growlers amateur hockey team. Cast a line at Howarth Park’s trout-stocked Lake Ralphine, and don’t forget to go for a row in a rental boat. To practice your freestyle or backstroke, there’s Ridgway Swim Center’s 25-yard pool and the Flamingo Resort & Spa’s historic pool. And Finley Community Center & Aquatic Complex recently opened a water playground with 15 interactive spray features.

Soccer, in Santa Rosa? Maybe. The United Soccer League and Santa Rosa are exploring the idea of introducing men’s and women’s USL teams to the city and building a new 5,000-seat stadium for games. Stay tuned!

If You Build It

Balletto Vineyards has more than just vines, it also has a regulationsize baseball diamond. The field, which takes up about four acres, hosts an annual, old-timey ballgame, with players decked out in Field of Dreams–era uniforms. Those who attend the game get a food and wine tasting, as well as the memory of a lifetime.

Santa Rosa’s food and drink scene is a smorgasbord of flavors and tastes. | By Ethan Fletcher

What’s the Buzz?

Crème brûlée, lavender rose, and iced chai lattes highlight the creative caffeinated concoctions at downtown staple Crooks Coffee, which keeps things local by sourcing coffee and tea from Petaluma Coffee & Tea Co., dairy from Clover Sonoma, and baked goods from nearby Costeaux French Bakery. Rollup in Historic Railroad Square fuses cafe and cycling culture by offering daily organized rides powered by espresso drinks

that use sustainable, smallbatch coffee from Santa Rosa’s Volo Roasting Company. Also in Railroad Square is Sonoma County’s oldest roaster, A’Roma Roasters Coffee & Tea, which serves organic coffee and has a robust selection of teas.

Elsewhere in town, Brew coffee and beer house has become an institution in the local and LGBTQ+ community. (The openmic sessions are one of the hottest tickets in town.) With two locations (downtown and west Santa Rosa), Land and Water Coffee is a specialty coffee roaster known for ethically and sustainably sourced beans meticulously roasted for balance and clarity. Finally, if you’re looking to brew or steep at home, look out for Bella Rosa Coffee Company’s organic low-acid beans or Tea & Trumpets' organic loose-leaf teas, both sold at local grocers and farmers markets.

TREATS WAYS

2

Santa Rosa has plenty of different ways to satisfy a sweet tooth. Most of the options fall into two categories: baked or frozen.

If baked goods are your jam (pun definitely intended), check out Marla Bakery, where celebrated husband-and-wife team Amy Brown and Joe Wolf make everything from chocolate croissants to crebbles —croissant-muffins covered in maple sugar and sea salt. Another winner, Red Bird Bakery run by husband-and-wife team Isaac and Linda Cermak. Here, consistent winners are sticky buns, chocolate cookies, and cinnamon rolls. Out in east Santa Rosa, Sarmentine and Pascaline French Bistro & Patisserie are two other favorites. Both menus feature items such as sticky-sweet kouign-amann

Costeaux French Bakery

and cannelés de Bordeaux. Pastries at these spots look almost too good to eat.

For a cooler treat, start at Nimble & Finn’s Homemade Ice Cream, a Railroad Square sweet shop featuring whimsical and seasonal ice creams made with organic Straus Family Creamery dairy. The towering ice cream cakes must be seen to be believed. Don’t miss Noble Folk Ice Cream & Pie Bar, where Sonoma County natives Ozzy Jimenez and Christian Sullberg are scooping homemade ice cream flavors such as matcha, black sesame, and strawberry with miso butterscotch. For some truly eccentric flavors, head to Montgomery Village and visit the local outpost of national chain Salt & Straw. Flavors here include pear and blue cheese, olive oil, and strawberry honey balsamic with black pepper. Somehow, they all work.

Date Night Destinations

Looking for a table for two? Santa Rosa has you covered for an evening out. on the menu at La Gare French Restaurant, which has been wooing couples with white-tablecloth dining for nearly 50 years. And at Augie’s French, local restaurateurs Mark and Terri Stark deliver an unapologetic love letter to classic French cuisine with a modernbistro backdrop in downtown.

John Ash restaurant practically invented farm-to-table cuisine in Sonoma County, and after nearly five decades, this magical destination set amid peaceful vineyards at Vinarosa Resort & Spa remains a special occasion staple. Short of a beach picnic, you won’t find better oceanside dining than at The Tides Wharf & Restaurant , serving up fresh seafood with sweeping Pacific views in nearby Bodega Bay. Iron and Vine Restaurant & Bar aces its updated-but-approachable menu of hearty Cal-American standards, which you can enjoy overlooking the manicured grounds of Bennett Valley Golf Course

It’s impossible to not be enchanted by the environs and satisfying Italian pasta favorites at LoCoco’s Cucina Rustica . Beef Wellington, French onion soup, and even frog legs are staples

The 1,600-pound custom-made wood grill fires up everything from baby back ribs and whole fish to burgers and maitake mushrooms at Bird & The Bottle Come for the tropical cocktails and poolside vibes, stay for the easy Pacific rim–inspired eats at the Lazeaway Club inside the revamped Flamingo Resort & Spa. With a buzzy, intimate atmosphere, hyperseasonal menu of scratch-made fare, and wine list emphasizing natural vintners, The Spinster Sisters checks all the contemporary boxes for the perfect date night.

Día De Santa RoSa

Santa Rosa is home to dozens of Latin restaurants. In fact, you can live for the better part of a week without eating any other type of cuisine.

Start off with a delicious concha and horchata latte at Tía María Panadería y Pastelería, a colorful Mexican-style bakery tucked into the Roseland neighborhood. If you’re looking for a sit-down experience, Carlos’ Country Kitchen serves breakfast daily with expert takes on breakfast burritos, huevos rancheros, and an enchilada omelet.

At lunch, it’s taco time, and the city has a wealth of options. Among the most popular include Taqueria las Palmas, Taqueria California , and Taqueria Molcajetes, all of which deliver street-style tacos with carnitas, al pastor pork, carne asada, and more. Sazón serves the authentic flavors of Peru in a lively setting, while El Coqui Puerto Rican Cuisine cooks up tostones, mofongo, and other crowd-pleasers.

At dinnertime, bring an appetite to La Rosa Tequileria & Grille, a downtown hot spot that offers elevated Mexican classics to go with some 180 artisan tequilas and mezcals. Los Molcajetes’ namesake dish contains grilled meats, cheese, fresh veggies, and sauces served sizzling inside a volcanic stone mortar. For a sweet and festive nightcap, Frozen Art Gourmet Ice Cream makes ice cream and paletas (popsicles) with real fruit in dozens of tropical flavors including passion fruit and pineapple-chili.

Meals with Wheels

Taste your way through this food truck park.

With a lineup of Mexican food trucks serving a choose-yourown-adventure of specialties from Oaxaca, Jalisco, Baja, and beyond, Mitote Food Park was an instant hit when it debuted five years ago in the heart of Santa Rosa’s Roseland neighborhood. The community loved it so much that when owner Octavio Diaz was forced to relocate, locals pitched in to help Diaz quickly reopen at a new location on Sebastopol Road. These new digs offer all the same food, as well as alfresco beer, wine, cocktails, sweets, live music, and weekly events.

Hometown Fruit

Juicy, deep red, and with an addictive sweet-tart flavor profile, the Santa Rosa plum is prized by stone fruit aficionados the world over. It’s also one of the many edible legacies of Luther Burbank, who developed more than 100 hybrid plums, prunes, and plumcots in Santa Rosa. See page 46 for more on the horticulturist.

Community Spirit

Café Frida’s new owners carry the torch in the SOFA District, Santa Rosa’s artistic hub.

The name for Café Frida was inspired by a large painting by founder Mario Uribe, featuring Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera together with famed Santa Rosa horticulturalist Luther Burbank. It was emblematic of what Uribe and cofounder Mamadou Diouf wanted to create when they launched the multipurpose cafe and gallery in 2020: a vibrant, multicultural oasis for creative types of all stripes.

Mission accomplished, as Frida’s mix of colorful art, live music, charming outdoor patio, and accessible cafe eats made it a spirited community gathering spot in the heart of Santa Rosa’s artsy SOFA District. So when Uribe and Diouf decided to sell the business in early 2025, they looked for buyers within that same community. They found a match in Brianna Hanson and Paul Sharp, longtime customers and partners at a next-door SOFA business.

“[The cafe has] been such a hub for the arts

district, so when they approached us, we jumped at the chance," Hanson says.

While staying true to Frida’s original spirit, the new owners are bringing in their own fresh ideas and energy. They recently debuted a front retail section centered around selling homewares for hosting parties and events. They also expanded the cafe’s hours with plans to ramp up beverage and food offerings, specifically building on the popular avocado toast. The space will continue to host rotating exhibits featuring local artists and live music during warmer months— and more is on the way, says Hanson.

“We want to do happy hours, movie nights, bingo nights, trivia nights: anything to help get people out and about as much as possible,” she says. “Everything I do is about fostering community. Our goal is to create a space that people want to be in, and hopefully bring more life to the area.”

The Stark Difference

Good food that’s better every day: That’s this family-run business’s goal.

It’s no exaggeration to call Mark and Terri Stark dining royalty in Sonoma County. Starting with their iconic Willie’s Wine Bar in 2002, the dynamic husband-wife duo now owns and operates eight unique restaurants in and around Santa Rosa under Stark Reality Restaurants.

But it’s one thing to open a restaurant, it’s another to maintain it. And while the culinary focus ranges from American steak house to Mediterranean to Spanish tapas, the Starks’ restaurants all exhibit an enduring quality and appeal that have stood the test of time.

Once they decide on a concept, the couple spends around two years on R&D followed by what they call the real key to their success: finding the right staff.

SANTA ROSA INSIDER

Mark Stark shares some of his favorite spots.

LAST GREAT MEAL: “Mortadella pizza and rosé wine at L’Oro di Napoli Stellar!”

FOOD THAT REMINDS YOU OF SANTA ROSA: “Any dish served with a great Russian River pinot noir reminds me of home.”

“Maintaining each restaurant, with its different approaches to food and beverage and different personality, is the challenge,” says Mark.

Comfort Food Classics

Also important is a healthy division of labor. Mark, who built up his cooking bona fides at fine-dining restaurants after graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, heads up the kitchens. Terri, a Sonoma County native who operated a successful catering business, handles the fronts of houses. Both are heavily involved in all aspects of running their restaurant group that employs more than 400 people. In the end, this is a business that comes down to food. Mark maintains a simple philosophy: “Do each task as good as or better than the day before. Then come in the next day and do it again.”

From pizza nights to barbecue cravings, these longtime favorites deliver every time.

FAVORITE SPOT WITH KIDS: “Ausiello’s 5th Street Bar & Grill is our favorite family time.”

SPECIAL OCCASION DESTINATION: “Ca'Bianca is a hidden gem of an Italian restaurant.”

CHEAP EATS: “Chili-garlic wings and double margaritas at La Rosa Tequileria & Grille !”

In Historic Railroad Square, Jackson’s Bar and Oven is where a wood-fired pizza and seasonal American fare meet craft cocktails and local beers. Ausiello’s Homeslice is a Rincon Valley neighborhood favorite with a focused menu of pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, and drinks, offering a relaxed place to gather with friends. Sticking to the pizza theme, Mary’s Pizza Shack is a local go-to for family meals and laid-back nights. And Sweet T’s Restaurant + Bar brings Southern-inspired barbecue—think Memphis–style ribs, fried chicken, and mac ’n’ cheese—paired with a stellar craft cocktail and bourbon list.

Masterful mixologists work magic at the city’s bars and lounges.

Particularly robust in downtown, Santa Rosa's drink scene doesn't disappoint.

Perch + Plow, a bar overlooking Old Courthouse Square, features innovative cocktails such as the Smoking Gun, with rye whiskey, vermouth, chocolate bitters, and a smoked hickory chip. Beer Baron Bar & Kitchen boasts more than 600 whiskey choices and plenty of local beers to chase the hard stuff. Both bars offer happy hour four days a week.

Overlooking the pool at the Flamingo Resort & Spa, the Flamingo Lazeaway Club is a tropics-

inspired bar with Polynesian-style drinks such as the Painkiller, a potent blend of rum, pineapple, and coconut. At Bird & The Bottle, cocktail lovers will find cleverly named drinks like the Shiso Pretty with St. George spiced pear liqueur, vodka, shiso vinegar, and lemon.

For a throwback vibe, check out The Front Room at Vinarosa Resort & Spa. This see-and-be-seen bar and lounge has an extensive wine list, classic cocktails, and expertly made seasonal drinks such as its pumpkin espresso martini. A spot next to the fireplace is especially cozy.

Fruits OF THE VINE

Santa Rosa wineries exemplify the very best of California wine country.

With so much happening in Santa Rosa all year long, it’s easy to forget the seat of Sonoma County has some stellar wineries, too. There’s nothing quite like Paradise Ridge Winery on the north end of town. In addition to a gorgeous tasting room overlooking the entire city, the property has dozens of outdoor sculptures guests can explore. In summer, the winery hosts open-air concerts and is a magical setting when the sun sinks below the horizon behind the stage.

Farther north, Kendall-Jackson Wine Estate & Gardens is a great place to sample one of the most popular brands from Jackson Family Wines. The winery has built an extensive food program; many tastings include food pairings made with ingredients grown in the expansive on-site garden. The winery

also features several winemaker dinners throughout the year.

At Historic Railroad Square's 4th Street Cellars, guests can taste a variety of estate-grown wines from the Bonneau, Egret, and Opal Moon labels. There’s also live music every Friday and Saturday night from 6–9 p.m.

Great wineries abound in the area just outside Santa Rosa, as well. To the west, Martin Ray Vineyards & Winery specializes in pinot noir, while Korbel Champagne Cellars is famous for the sparkling wine produced at its circa-1882 facility. (Don’t miss the great on-site deli.) Taste Route 116, another tasting room, is a great spot to sample wines from some of the region’s smaller producers. Off Highway 12, Ledson Winery & Vineyards pours a variety of different wines in a hospitality center built to resemble a Normandy-style château, while the experience at St. Francis Winery & Vineyards unfolds in a Mission-style tasting room with sweeping views of the vines outside. Up in Geyserville, Francis Ford Coppola Winery serves several varieties in a tasting room adorned with mementos and artifacts from Coppola’s film career.

Paradise Ridge Winery

All Wine, No Alcohol

Enjoy a glass without the ABV.

As more Americans embrace a sober lifestyle, a growing number of wineries are producing nonalcoholic wines. Several Santa Rosaarea wineries are among this group. Martin Ray Vineyards & Winery, for instance, recently unveiled a verjus (a fancy word for juice) of pinot noir, while Castello di Amorosa in Calistoga offers a three-pour tasting of its new lineup of Libero alcohol-free wines. Or, stop into Wilibees Wine & Spirits to peruse more NA options.

Small-Batch, Big Wines

Discover Stonemason Cellars in downtown Santa Rosa.

Founder and winemaker TJ Elam and his wife Francesca launched Stonemason Cellars in 2019 with the goal of creating a wine with “as much character as the people who make it.” And that character runs deep.

According to the winemaker, the brand pays homage to his great-great-grandfather, who worked as a stonemason and built the building that now houses the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in St. Helena.

Today, the winery has one of the hippest tasting rooms in Santa Rosa—an industrial-chic space inside the AC Hotel Santa Rosa Sonoma Wine Country. The approach to wine is hip, too:

Stonemason prides itself on making vintages from 12 two-acre vineyard lots, which yields a diverse set of wines from all over the county.

“We’re just about as Sonoma County as you can get,” he says.

All tastings come with a food pairing, showcasing how food-friendly the wines are. Bites change monthly and might include cheese, crackers, charcuterie, or caviar.

But the best part of the tasting room is its location, right in the heart of one of the city’s most happening neighborhoods.

“We think Santa Rosa is on the up and up,” says Elam. “It’s a great place for young energy to flood in.”

Tap into the best of Santa Rosa’s beer scene.

Santa Rosa is one of the country’s great beer cities—so good that some beer lovers travel thousands of miles to sip Sonoma County brews.

No. 1 on everyone’s list: Russian River Brewing Company, where people wait in line for hours to taste Pliny the Younger during its limited annual release in late winter/early spring. RRBC has several other great beers, too, and usually has at least a dozen or so on tap, including some going through research and development.

Another Santa Rosa icon: Moonlight Brewing Company, which is best known for its Death & Taxes dark lager, but also features the highly quaffable Reality Czech pilsner, pale ales, and a seasonal petite saison. Here, the taps are fresh, the vibe is comfy, and the beers are just really good.

Cooperage Brewing Company has two locations in Santa Rosa, including a new tasting room downtown. Popular suds include the Keg Slayer West Coast IPA and Curt pale ale series, which has a lower ABV. Elsewhere, HenHouse Brewing Company wows beer lovers with its hazy IPAs and creative names, such as Avian Surveillance Division. On the Silver Screen

A movie lover’s guide to Santa Rosa

Santa Rosa has a long history with Hollywood, garnering starring roles on the silver screen for decades. Legendary director Alfred Hitchcock was one of the first to call out the city’s charisma when he featured the Railroad Square train station in his 1943 thriller, Shadow of a Doubt. Today, the historic station remains a point of interest for film buffs eager to stop by for a peek.

Hitchcock’s time in Santa Rosa wasn’t limited to the train station. Locals tell stories about the icon filming at a Victorian home on McDonald Avenue. Perhaps Walt Disney Studios took notice of the fetching backdrop, because in 1959 the star-studded cast of Pollyanna (including Hayley Mills, Jane Wyman, Karl Malden, and Richard Egan), came to

town to shoot at a nearby mansion formerly known as Mableton.

Before he made his name in wine, director Frances Ford Coppola brought Kathleen Turner and Nicolas Cage to Santa Rosa High School to film scenes for the 1986 comedy Peggy Sue Got Married. The much-loved Wagon Wheel dive bar had a moment of fame in the 1996 fantasy flick Phenomenon, starring John Travolta, Kyra Sedgwick, and Forest Whitaker.

A standing ovation goes to Railroad Square for star power that’s never dimmed. Decades after Hitchcock featured it in his thriller, the Santa Rosa landmark got a second chance to shine beside actor Steve Martin in the comedy Cheaper by the Dozen 2

A SceneStealing Setting

Sonoma County’s cinematic resume spans decades and genres. Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds helped put the Sonoma County coast on Hollywood’s radar, while George Lucas’s nostalgic American Graffiti captured its classic Americana feel. The area has also hosted thrillers like Wes Craven’s Scream. Scan the QR code for more regional film history.

When Larkin O’Leary learned her son James had Down syndrome, she set out to create a community for other parents of kids who are differently abled and have rare diagnoses.

Today, that community has evolved into Common Ground Society, a Santa Rosa-based nonprofit that offers support and resources to families with kids who have any life-changing diagnosis. The organization connects families through support groups, in-person meetups, and a Sonoma County Facebook group.

CGS also educates the community about disabilities and inclusion, fostering compassion. Since 2017, O’Leary has facilitated presentations for more than 100,000 students in Sonoma County and beyond.

The organization’s work doesn’t stop there: Through communitywide advocacy, Common Ground has inspired some local businesses to offer adult-size changing cots and sensory hours.

But this community response comes as no surprise to O’Leary, who says she always knew Santa Rosans would support those who are differently abled.

“Our community recognizes the beauty that every person brings and is willing to open their minds to ideas and thoughts they’ve never considered,” she says.

“Everyone has something beautiful to offer this world, if only we’re brave enough to recognize it.”

ComeTogether

Gorgeous landscapes and top-notch hospitality make Santa Rosa an epic destination for weddings, meetings, and events.

Breathtaking scenery? Check. Amazing venues? Check. One-of-a-kind service? Also check. Santa Rosa is the perfect place to host gatherings of all kinds.

Tying the Knot

Perhaps the most notable spot in Santa Rosa to host a wedding is Paradise Ridge Winery, which opened its new hospitality center in 2019. The indoor-outdoor pavilion faces the stunning Russian River Valley. Another great local location: Iron & Vine Restaurant, Bar & Events at Bennett Valley Golf Course. Surrounded by vines, St. Francis Winery & Vineyards offers a picturesque outdoor space for nuptials; while Francis Ford Coppola Winery has two event venues—a terrace overlooking acres of vineyard, and a vibey pool deck.

Meeting of the Minds

Santa Rosa is also a great place for midsize and small groups to gather for meetings or events. A new event space, The Backdrop is owned and operated by Becoming Independent, a local organization that provides employment to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Other notable meeting locations include Vinarosa Resort & Spa, Flamingo Resort & Spa, and Hyatt Regency Sonoma Wine Country. All told, Santa Rosa is home to 10 hotels with flexible meeting spaces to accommodate events from a small family gathering of 10 to a corporate sales meeting for 400 people.

Cultivating Paradise

With its outdoor art and stunning vistas, it’s easy to say “I do” to Paradise Ridge Winery.

Just one look at the rolling hillside view and twinkling city lights in the distance from Paradise Ridge Winery, and it’s no wonder why thousands of couples have gotten married here in the last 40 years.

“People like it here because we have a little bit of everything: great views, good wine, and a family touch,” says owner Rene Byck. Another reason guests love visiting Paradise Ridge is its sculpture garden, which showcases dozens of pieces including a giant metal LOVE structure.

In addition to the art and event facilities, Paradise Ridge also has several vacation rentals on site—a perk for families looking to rent out the entire venue for a wonderful wedding weekend. Byck says these homes give wedding guests a chance to experience life as locals.

“Being here really shows off how beautiful Sonoma County is and how interesting Santa Rosa is,” he says. “We’re proud to be ambassadors in that way.”

For road-trippers, Santa Rosa is located between U.S. 101 and Highway 12, roughly 50 minutes from the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge. Thanks to Santa Rosa’s central location, visitors can easily take day trips to Sonoma, Petaluma, or the Sonoma County coast. Rental cars can be picked up at STS airport and at several rental locations around the city.

There are plenty of options for visitors to explore the city without a car. Santa Rosa CityBus takes visitors to dozens of destinations across the city. Adult tickets cost $1.50 apiece, and for $4, grown-ups and kids can ride buses for an extended period. Redwood Bikeshare is another great way to get around. Some commuters use these bikes for the last stretch between SMART and their jobs or homes; others use the bikes as an alternative form of transportation, especially when planning a day out. Several area hotels also offer complimentary bicycles including the Hyatt Regency Sonoma Wine Country and The Lodge at Bodega Bay. And The Astro Motel has an on-site bicycle repair station. Finally, downtown Santa Rosa is eminently walkable, especially considering it’s no more than 10 square blocks.

Eat Fresh, Shop Local

Santa Rosa’s farmers markets and stands are a great way to support local artisans and taste the bounty of the region.

The largest market in the area, the Santa Rosa Original Certified Farmers Market is held in the parking lot of the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts Wednesdays (March–December) and Saturdays year-round. Even on drizzly days this market draws nearly 50 vendors, including many regional farmers. Also held on Wednesdays and Saturdays, the Santa Rosa Community Farmers’ Market is a robust year-round gathering in the Farmer’s Lane Plaza—don’t miss out on the fresh bouquets and ripe strawberries in summer. Family-owned since 1886, Imwalle Gardens is an old-fashioned farm stand overflowing with produce plucked from its 12-acre backyard and other local farmers.
