W

elcome to Ventura! Our small, charming, coastal town has incredible restaurants, social settings, and peaceful environments to fill your days. We’re fortunate to be right on the coast, and nothing beats a peaceful stroll along the Promenade and Surfers Point. My dog Bruce and I love to go for walks at Marina Park, and sometimes, we're lucky enough to spot dolphins. One of the best things about Ventura is the volume and quality of locally owned businesses. A local favorite of mine is Social Tap, a great place to unwind by the shore. When friends or family visit, I love to take them to Rocks & Drams for its sophisticated atmosphere, and they take great pride in crafting their drinks. Café Zack is a hidden gem with exceptional food and friendly service. And for brunch, I recommend Cafe Nouveau (try the chili poblano!). I hope you take the time to explore these local treasures and discover for yourself why so many of us love to call Ventura home.

Fresh Flavors

Crave Gelato Kofi Bar is the perfect spot to grab a craft coffee or smoothie in Portside Ventura Harbor. Butter & Fold Bakery makes Midtown mornings more delicious with its organic pastries and artisan coffees. A few blocks away, Buddy’s Wine is a new neighborhood wine shop and bar featuring a rotating global selection of wines available by the glass as well as beers and bites. Midtown Grill serves up fast casual eats ranging from burgers and burritos to breakfast bowls. Bright Spark Brewing and Wildflower Winery give two delicious new reasons to sip around the Industrial District. Downtown, BellRinger Brew Co. breathed new life into the original Anacapa Brewing Co. taproom. Good Lion Hospitality added Strange Beast and Jaguar & Moon to their growing collection of craft cocktail bars with equally strong, complementary food offerings inspired by Japan and Mexico, respectively. Downtown also welcomed a Rori's Artisanal Creamery scoop shop on Main Street. Over on The Avenue, Indian Rasoi specializes in Indian classics and fun fusion twists on burritos and tacos.

A sisters-brother trio opened Plant Shop 805 in the former Timbre Books space. In addition to cacti and outdoor plants that they cultivate, the shop is stocked with cool accessories and tools. Timbre Books moved two doors down to a larger location in the same building. The independent bookseller now has double the space to showcase its well-curated selection of books. Keep the Midtown treasure hunting going at Poppies Vintage. WANTS / NEEDS Community Arts Collective is an edgy new

multi-use gallery space Downtown that shows and sells a selection of orIginal art, apparel, books, and other novelties.

Cruise Control

Ventura Boat Rentals made a splash at Ventura Harbor Village with its colorful new fleet of paddle boats shaped like flamingos, dragons, ducks, and swans. Nearby at Portside Ventura Harbor, Ventura Vision Electric Boat Rental offers eco-friendly electric boat rentals. Boaters (ages 21+) of any experience level can take the helm of one of their 10-passenger vessels. Following a brief safety and training orientation, head out to cruise the Harbor and Ventura Keys.

A Classic Returns

After sustaining storm damage, the iconic Ventura Pier underwent a major restoration process and is set to reopen in early 2024. Community volunteers working with the nonprofit group Pier Into the Future have raised funds to bring the 1872 landmark back to the public. One of the oldest wooden piers in California, the Pier is the perfect place for a scenic stroll and to take in sweeping views of the coastline and out to Channel Islands National Park.

Berry Good News

Ventura County Fairgrounds is the new home of the California Strawberry Festival, a beloved Central Coast tradition that takes place every May and has been running for nearly 40 years. Come for the sweet and savory strawberry-centric food and drinks, stay for the arts, crafts, carnival games, and live entertainment.

From its earliest days as sacred Chumash land to its agricultural heritage and pioneering surf culture, Ventura has always been deeply connected to the natural environment.

The historic crossing from the mainland to Santa Cruz Island in a Chumash tomol.

ROBERT SCHWEMMER, NOAA CHANNEL ISLANDS NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY

Legacy of Stewardship The Chumash are the region's first people. They inhabited over 7,000 square miles, including the land now known as Ventura. According to Chumash elders, the word Chumash means “island people, makers of shell bead money,” a nod to their relationship with the coast. They were known for their skills as boatmakers and basketweavers, along with their extensive trade networking and commerce. Members of the mainland tribe traveled along the Ventura coast and out to the Channel Islands in tomols (canoes made of driftwood from redwood trees) to hunt, fish, and trade. Today, that seafaring heritage is celebrated through the Chumash Maritime Association. They built a 26-foot-long tomol named ‘Elye’wun, the Chumash word for swordfish (pronounced “el-e-ah-woon”). Once a year, Chu-

mash crews paddle the boat out to Santa Cruz Island to complete the traditional crossing, a laborious, adventurous 21-mile journey. Dozens of Chumash villages once occupied Santa Cruz Island, including Scorpion Valley, where a campground is today. Since 1980, the entire chain of islands has been protected by the National Park Service; the Channel Islands were initially designated a National Monument in 1938.

Love of the Land and Sea Ventura’s green roots run deep. The Chumash thrived on the fertile land and rich sea life sourced between Ventura and the islands. Centuries later, during the 1800s into the early 1900s, immigrants from all over the world resettled in Ventura to work on farms and ranches. Meanwhile, the bounty of the Pacific created a commercial

fishing industry, further boosted by the construction of the Ventura Pier in 1872, which also supported the export of agricultural goods such as lima beans, wheat, citrus, and cattle. Ventura residents have long had a reverence for the natural world, be it by supporting their livelihoods, providing daily sustenance, or offering recreational opportunities—especially as surfing took off in the 1930s. As a result, sustainability and ecological preservation remain shared community priorities. “I can think of no greater honor than working to preserve this amazing place we call home for the people and the nature of today and tomorrow,” says Melissa Baffa, executive director of Ventura Land Trust. The Land Trust is one of many local organizations working steadfastly to ensure generations to come will be able to enjoy the region’s beauty and bounty. They VisitVenturaCA.com 13

Patagonia Pride

One of the world’s most legendary outdoor brands was founded by Yvon Chouinard in Ventura in 1973. A pioneer of sustainability since day one, Patagonia was the first California company to be certified as a B Corp. They also participate in 1% For the Planet and, in 2022, Chouinard transferred ownership of his family’s $3 billion company to a trust and non-profit with a specific mission to combat climate change and protect undeveloped land around the globe. His bold move made headlines around the world and underscored Patagonia’s commitment to creating a

new form of capitalism. Between setting an impressive example for eco-friendly business practices, treating their employees and suppliers fairly, and supporting like-minded environmental champions, Patagonia’s wide web of influence around the globe continues to be a source of pride for its hometown community.

“it’s wall to wall people– we’re sold out!” -TONY HAWK

Ryan Decenzo at the Summer 2023 X Games

“i like the vibe of [ventura]. all the people who came out here to watch…and the beaches are really nice.”

Ventura has long been popular with surfers who come for the perfect waves and stay for the laid-back vibes. Historians trace recreational surfing in local waters back to the 1930s, when surfers were already traveling up the coast from LA in search of perfect waves. Pro surfers including Eithan Osborne, Sage Erickson, Dane Reynolds, and Mary Osborne are resident local legends who can be spotted around town and riding the waves at their favorite breaks. Whether you want to watch skilled surfers from the beach, learn to hang ten yourself, or shop for local surf swag, the surfer lifestyle is always within easy reach in Ventura.

If surfing the streets is more your speed, skateboarding is just as much a part of Ventura’s DNA as wave riding. A longtime hot spot for the California-born sport, pro skateboarders including brothers Jake and Mike Anderson, Curren Caples, and Frankie Hill are among the sport’s hometown heroes. In 2023, the world’s best skateboarders and rising stars descended upon Ventura for the Summer 2023 X Games finals, drawing even more attention to the local skateboarding scene. Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk himself competed in the Vert Best Trick category to a sold-out crowd.

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO THE

Discover one of the country’s leastexplored national parks for a truly unplugged adventure 21 miles offshore. EXPLORE WILD, PRISTINE NATURAL BEAUTY

Ventura is the gateway to epic Channel Islands National Park adventures. Ventura Harbor Village is home to the official Channel Islands National Park & Marine Sanctuary Visitor Center. Island Packers' ferries depart from the Harbor nearly daily (as conditions permit). Aptly nicknamed the “Galápagos of North America,” this isolated chain of five islands is home to 2,000 plant and animal species—150 of which can’t be found anywhere else in the world. From north to south, the pristine terrains of the San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa, and Santa Barbara islands jut out of the Pacific. The largest, Santa Cruz Island, is the perfect choice to experience the islands. With enormous sea caves, rich kelp forests, and crystal-clear tide pools, the water is a main attraction. The hiking trails and campsites are equally compelling—it doesn’t get more off the grid than this!

packing essentials • Backpack: Pack your sack with the day’s essentials that you can carry on the boat. Once on the island, storage bins are available. • Drinking Water: You can refill water bottles at the Scorpion Canyon Campground, and Channel Islands Adventure Co. has a chilled water cooler. • Layers: You’ll need a jacket for the boat ride over. Avoid cotton for any water-based adventures. • Water Gear: Water shoes like Teva sandals for the kayak excursion, a waterproof phone case if you want to take pictures (Channel Islands Adventure Co. sells sleeves that will also do the trick), and a swimsuit to wear under the provided wetsuit. • Sun Protection: Sunscreen and a hat—baseball hats work well under safety helmets. And don’t forget to protect your hands, feet, and ankles with sunscreen! • Food: There are no food vendors on the island, so bring ample fuel to keep your energy up while out in the elements. Pack a simple lunch and snacks such as trail mix. Energy bars are convenient for a mid-kayak snack break. • Trash Bag: Everything must come back on the boat with you—there are no trash cans on the island. So bring a bag that can hold your waste. Storing your snacks in a reusable container can protect your food and make bringing the trash home tidier.

An Adventure to Remember A day trip to Santa Cruz Island wows with wild scenery, abundant marine life sightings, and sea cave explorations.

I hadn’t set foot on the Channel Islands since grade school, so I jumped at the chance to visit Santa Cruz Island on an Adventure Sea Cave Kayak Tour with Channel Islands Adventure Company (CIAC). Once that was booked, I secured my Island Packers ferry reservations for the day trip there and back. The morning of the trip, I arrived to check in the recommended 45 minutes before the 8:00 a.m. departure. I grabbed a map of Santa Cruz Island and bought a little packet of anti-seasick meds. (Just in case!) When it was time to board, my adventure buddy Bree and I sat in the back of the boat on a bench facing forward upon the advice of the crew. As we watched Ventura fade in our wake, it would be another 50 minutes or so until we reached the island. Before we knew it, we were pulling into Scorpion Anchorage, oohing and ahhing at the clear, turquoise-green waters and seabirds soaring overhead. Since Bree and I had a bit of free time before our kayak tour, we walked to the Scorpion Canyon Campground. There, we were delighted with an island fox sighting. The cute little guy was on the hunt for food scraps from recently departed campers. After exploring the rustic campground and breathing in the fragrant scent of the eucalyptus groves, we made our way back to CIAC’s sheds to gear up for our sea cave kayak adventure. After changing into swimsuits and wetsuits, our guide Carly handed out the mandatory life vests and helmets. Once everyone was outfitted, Carly led us down to the beach and gave us kayaking 101 tips. Fully briefed, we hauled our tandem kayaks onto the rocky beach (those water shoes really come in handy!), and Carly helped us launch into the water. And so our adventure began! We paddled south to our first set of sea caves. Before going into each cave, Carly coached us on how to navigate them based on the ceiling levels, rock outcroppings, and waves. The first was the easiest, and we worked our way up to intermediate pretty quickly, cheering each other on as we went kayak by kayak through the tighter entries and exits. We were always given a choice, so if someone wasn’t comfortable there was an option to wait for the group on the other side, holding onto kelp, which was a handy anchor throughout the 2.5-hour kayaking adventure. Carly taught us about the kelp forests (it grows up to two feet a day!), the sea life (we spotted a jellyfish!), and other island facts along the way. We took a break on a

beach about halfway through to have a snack, stretch our legs, and snap photos before heading to the other side of Scorpion Anchorage, where the biggest caves are. Bree and I took on all but the final challenge: traversing a narrow archway that required a perfectly timed burst of paddling in sync with the waves. Instead, we took pleasure in watching our guide Carly skillfully glide through, raising her paddle above her head victoriously as she emerged—a photo finish to a magical time on the remarkably clear water. We navigated our kayaks back to shore. Our muscles may have been weary, but the rush of the experience carried us through returning the kayaks and walking back to the CIAC shacks to peel off our gear and change into dry clothes. Our return ferry was fast approaching, so we only had time to enjoy a late lunch back at the campground picnic tables, soaking up the sun and recapping our kayaking escapades. The smooth ferry ride home delivered big-time on marine life sightings—the captain spotted a huge pod of dolphins and maneuvered the boat to cruise around with them for a spell. I couldn’t think of a more enchanting sight to conclude an invigorating, inspiring day at the Islands…as I plotted my future return trip to check hiking and camping off my bucket list!

TIPS TO MAKE THE HOUR-LONG FERRY RIDE COMFORTABLE AND ENJOYABLE.

Island Guide Life CARLY GAMMEL, ASSISTANT ISLAND MANAGER FOR CHANNEL ISLANDS ADVENTURE CO., is one of the rare few who get to live part-time on Santa Cruz Island—a perk of this skilled tour guide’s job helping people explore the islands by kayak and snorkeling.

WHAT LED YOU TO BECOMING A KAYAKING AND SNORKELING GUIDE?

I grew up attending and working at summer camps, so I’ve had the privilege of spending time in beautiful places doing fun activities. I’m so grateful to have found a job on an island. I love working in the outdoors, getting people out in nature, experiencing the beauty of the Channel Islands, and adventuring in the sea caves!

WHAT IS A TYPICAL WORK WEEK LIKE?

Always different, always fun! Sometimes I’m leading small groups on sea cave kayak tours and snorkel tours, and sometimes we’re leading outdoor education camping trips for school groups with 100 students or more.

WHAT SURPRISED YOU THE MOST ABOUT SPENDING SO MUCH TIME ON SANTA CRUZ ISLAND? How small the foxes are, and how big the island is!

WHAT'S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?

I love the community of guides that I work with! Every day it’s a new mix of people I’m working with, and they make this job so fun. We make meals together and go on fun adventures after work.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST EPIC WILDLIFE OR MARINE LIFE SIGHTING? Snorkeling with harbor seals out at Santa Cruz Island! It’s so cool to see one of these little buddies swim by me!

ANY TIPS FOR FIRST-TIME ISLAND ADVENTURERS? Be ready for some adventure, and be flexible. We call it “island time” for a reason. Santa Cruz is a very remote island, so make sure to bring everything you need, like when you go on a backpacking trip into the wilderness in a remote location. Bring everything you need for the day including gear, food, and water.

• Call the Island Packers info line at the designated time the morning of your passage to confirm that the trip is taking place. Occasionally, sea conditions lead to cancellations. • Wear a windbreaker or bring a jacket to stay warm. • If you're prone to motion sickness, wear seasick prevention bands or take over-the-counter medicine. Ginger chews are helpful, too! • Line up early to get the best choice of seats on the boat. The lower deck benches facing forward ensure you’ll have fresh air and can keep an eye on the horizon. • Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins and whales—the captain will draw your attention to any sightings as well.

Happy Campers chumash heritage

Channel Islands Chumash tribes had villages on the three northernmost islands for 13,000 years. The local tribes traveled between the mainland and the Channel Islands on tomols, canoes made of redwood, animal tendons, and tar. Today, tomols are the oldest known example of ocean-going watercraft in North America. For more Chumash history, read Scott O’Dell’s Island of the Blue Dolphins, a classic work of historical fiction first published in 1960. Based on a true story, the protagonist of the children’s novel is a Native American Indian woman who lived alone on the Channel Islands for 18 years.

Santa Cruz Island has 31 campsites at Scorpion Canyon Campground, bookable through the National Park Service. Reservations are required and are scooped up quickly, so plan ahead and book your ferry passage first in order to qualify for a reservation. The sites are primitive, with only a picnic table and food storage box. The canyon location surrounded by eucalyptus trees provides some shelter from the wind. When it comes to what to pack, there are no amenities or supplies on the island beyond potable water. You have to carry all of your gear in from the ferry, walking approximately half a mile, and carry everything (including your trash) back out with you. Campfires are not permitted, so any cooking needs to be done with an enclosed gas stove.

Kayak: Paddle along shore and into sea caves on a guided tour with Channel Islands Adventure Company. Three tours are offered, ranging from 1.5 hours to four hours, and there’s also an option to combine kayaking with snorkeling.

Spot Wildlife: Santa Cruz Island is home to dozens of unique animals and birds found nowhere else on earth. Be on the lookout for bird sightings such as the orange-crowned warbler, Peregrine falcon, island scrub jay, and the rare brown booby. Island foxes can be spotted at the campgrounds and wandering around in search of snacks. Roughly the size of a small house cat, the island foxes are a preservation success story, as they are no longer endangered.

Hike: The island is home to a network of trails ranging from easy to strenuous. The moderate twomile Cavern Point Loop serves up sweeping ocean vistas. (Hike clockwise from the campground to avoid a steep climb.) North Bluff Trail connects to Potato Harbor two miles away, where an elevated view awaits from the steep cliff top. The most challenging hike is Smugglers Cove, an all-day, 7.5-mile round-trip trek with a beach break at the halfway point.

Ventura’s landscape was made for hiking and biking—from the mountains and hills to the city streets and waterfront. The tranquil hillsides behind Ventura beckon hikers to escape into nature just a few minutes from the heart of town. Long ridgelines reward trekkers with sweeping views that stretch from the craggy mountain peaks out to Channel Islands National Park. Spanning 2,100 protected acres, Harmon Canyon Preserve is home to wildlife—coyotes, bobcats, and black bears, oh my!—and plenty of ways to get your steps in. Its web of popular hiking and mountain biking trails cuts through oak groves, crosses streams, and traverses hillsides. Looking for a distance challenge? Complete the 7.2-mile round-trip tour of the Preserve, following Harmon Canyon Road, veering right onto Long Canyon Road to reach the Goldenberg Overlook before turning back. For something a bit milder, Ventura Botanical Gardens offers a two-mile round-trip trek with switchbacks as you ascend to the panoramic vista overlooking Downtown and the full

stretch of coast. Admire the wild yet manicured collections of plants representing the five Mediterranean climate zones around the world, including California. Cyclists can explore Ventura’s high country on the Sulphur Mountain Trail, accessed off Highway 33. The car-free, 11-mile dirt and gravel trail rewards mountain bikers with spectacular views of Ojai Valley and the Pacific in the distance. Wide and not especially technical, the trail has switchbacks that ease the climb through oak woodlands and along rolling hills before the ride tops out at an elevation of 2,400 feet. The 16.5-mile Ventura River Parkway Trail follows a former Southern Pacific Railroad right-of-way. Because trains could only travel on gradual inclines, the 745-foot ascent is modest as you gaze out on the surrounding hills—and it’s all downhill on the way back to Ventura. It doesn’t get any easy-breezier than the four-mile beachfront California Coastal Trail. Spot surfers at C Street and Surfers Point before riding past natural areas such as Ventura River Estuary wetlands and stretches of coastal dunes.

Her least favorite? “Harmon Canyon,” she laughs. Those hills are punishing!

SARAH INGRAM, OWNER OF GRASSROOTS YOGA, WAS BORN AND RAISED IN VENTURA. A yogi since 2008, she teaches Power Flow and Sculpt Power Flow. Here, she shares what makes Ventura a special destination for wellness seekers and other local tips.

Sarah Ingram in wheel pose

Wellness on Tap WHAT MAKES VENTURA A DESTINATION FOR WELLNESS SEEKERS?

Ventura attracts wellness seekers that want a more down-to-earth lifestyle that is extremely community-based. Ventura is such a tight-knit community, and I believe that we inspire each other with our health choices, whether it’s through indoor fitness or all of the outdoor options we have access to.

HOW DO YOU SPEND TIME OUTDOORS TO GET GROUNDED AND CONNECT WITH NATURE?

Cactus garden at the Ventura Botanical Gardens

My favorite way to connect with nature right now is simply walking outdoors with my kids. Nature is everywhere! You don’t have to travel into the mountains or do anything special—nature is all around us. I love seeing all of the various plants, trees, flowers, and insects on my walks. If you simply take the time to be present, you can really tune into the beauty of nature in all places. I always stop to smell blooming flowers that people have in their yards, like roses, jasmine, sweet pea, lavender, rosemary, and orange tree blossoms.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR GO-TO LOCAL WELLNESS PURVEYORS?

For a massage, Haven and Glow Massage & Skincare are my favorite spots to decompress. Lizette Pelayo of Creme' Piel gives the best all-natural customized facials with clean and pure plant elements. I highly recommend Rebekha Wolf [a teacher at Grassroots Yoga] and Kelle Evans [at The Healing Portal] for somatic healing.

WHAT CLASSES WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO TRY SOMETHING NEW OR DIFFERENT WHILE ON VACATION?

If someone is on a more relaxing vacation, I would recommend our Yinfusion or Yoga Nidra classes. For those seeking a more energetic, fun, and vigorous class, our 101 Sculpt Class is really fun! It’s a high-energy yoga flow with light hand weights. We also offer Deep Flow and Sacred Living Flow for a more philosophic, introspective practice. We offer our class in both a heated space and a regular unheated space. Our heated space uses infrared heat panels to warm

the room to 95 degrees. It’s so therapeutic! We highly recommend trying out a heated class for someone looking for something new in their practice and routine. For anyone traveling to the Ventura location, we offer a travel pass for $60 that includes a week of unlimited classes and a free mat rental!

ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO RECOMMEND LOCALLY?

Definitely walk the State Beach/ Promenade at sunset! The scenery is so gorgeous, especially at low tide when the surfers are out.

built to last IRON & RESIN CO-FOUNDER THOM HILL REFLECTS ON VENTURA’S ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT AND WHAT SETS THE COMPANY APART.

What makes Ventura such a special place to create, curate, and share quality goods with the community? Much of the inspiration we get for Iron & Resin comes from Ventura and our surrounding areas. It makes up much of the DNA of the brand. With the ocean and islands as our front yard and the mountains and surrounding wilderness as our backyard, Ventura provides endless opportunities for adventure and outdoor experiences. Ventura is an incredibly eclectic mix of people. It’s one of the last blue-collar beach towns that hasn’t been overly gentrified and still maintains the charm of a place that honors its history. We try to honor that in the products we create and the goods in our retail space. How has your business evolved over the past decade? We’ve always been a community-based brand. Over the past few years, we’ve added a shared outdoor event space where we’ll continue to hold community events—from art shows and record releases to maker’s markets and board/ bike swaps. We’re also adding a full women’s collection that we’re pretty excited about. What are some of the signature Iron & Resin-designed products available in the shop? A few of our core items are always most in demand: the Rambler Jacket, Enduro Denim, Million Mile tees, and leather accessories. What’s a must-have souvenir? One of our graphic tees or a hat is an easy one. Pick up a sticker, pin, or patch while you’re at it.

“Made in Ventura” is more than a saying— it’s the mantra behind the inspiring tales of countless local entrepreneurs, artists, and innovators who have made their dreams a reality right here on our sunny shores. From masterful chocolatiers and imaginative distillers to groundbreaking surfboard shapers and mindful apparel designers, you too can become part of their success stories when you bring a piece of Ventura home.

In Good Taste

Stock your pantry, fridge, and bar with consumable goods from makers such as Ventura Spirits. Launched in 2011 by a pair of brothers and two of their friends, the distillery stands out for its use of regional produce and foraged botanicals to craft distinctive spirits. “In a place like Ventura, agriculture is everywhere,” says Anthony Caspary, one of the brand’s co-founders. The ever-expanding range of products includes the flagship Wilder Gin, YOLO California Agave Spirits, and Ojai Pixie-cello. The attractive label art makes the bottles highly giftable, and they’ve also branched out to cleverly branded canned cocktails. (Angeleno Spritz, anyone?) Another family beverage business, Prospect Coffee Roasters is a favorite among coffee connoisseurs. Drop by the Downtown coffee shop to pick up a bag of freshly roasted beans. If the brew is for you, sign up for a subscription to get coffee sent to your home. Started by Ventura native Sophia SmithGrunder and her mother Jennifer, Ex Voto Chocolates and Confections makes every morsel from scratch, and the resulting hand-painted bonbons are true works of edible art. Top This Chocolate invites you to customize gourmet chocolate bars from their selection of sweet and savory toppings—an interactive experience that's particularly popular with kids. Cafe Ficelle is where locals go for delectable European-style pastries and freshly baked artisanal loaves, cakes, and tarts.

Custom Creations

From making sound waves to wave riding, Ventura craftspeople are sought after for their original works. Jackson Herrera of Ventura Guitar Company has built guitars for strummers and shredders that play for bands as diverse as Guns N’ Roses and the Goo Goo Dolls. “Father of the Modern Longboard” Steve Walden and his team at Walden Surfboards take pride in matching surfers of every level to the best board possible. “We cater to hardcore surfers who know exactly what they want and we have the best high-end surfboards for them,” says Walden. “And, we cater equally to the new, beginner surfer who might have a low knowledge base and is looking for more basic or starter boards.” Wearable, ocean-inspired art can be found at Betty Belts. Owner Donna von Hoesslin and her team of designers work magic with sea glass and recycled surfboard resin to make one-of-a-kind jewelry and accessories infused with the spirit of the sea. The Salt Ranch allows you to personalize straw hats with various leather bands and offers custom hat shaping by appointment. Dusk invites you to create your own candle. Outfit your tablescape or mantle with a piece created by one of the members of the Ventura County Potters’ Guild. The cooperative maintains a gallery in Ventura Harbor Village.

Art on the Streets The whole city is a canvas for colorful murals.

local lowdown Thomas Cussins, Co-Owner, Ventura Music Hall THOMAS CUSSINS HAS HIS FINGER ON THE PULSE OF VENTURA’S MUSIC SCENE AND INTRODUCES NEW ARTISTS TO THE COMMUNITY.

How would you describe Ventura’s performing arts scene and overall cultural landscape?

Street art is everywhere in Ventura, and new pieces are always popping up around town. Chart your own mural tour as you explore different neighborhoods. Downtown on Figueroa Street, take in large works such as China Alley Memorial (Qi Pang and Songyun Guo), which depicts scenes of Chinese settlers in the 1880s. Agriculture and Industries of Ventura (Gordon K. Grant) dates to 1938 and depicts local Depression-era life; see it in the San Buenaventura Post Office on Santa Clara Street. Tortilla Flats (MB Hanrahan and Moses Mora) commemorates the city’s first culturally diverse neighborhood and cov-

ers the Figueroa Street underpass. Take a selfie with Vincent van Gogh and Ventura’s cityscape in front of Starry Night Midtown Ventura (Lisa Kelly) on East Main Street. The Avenue has the largest concentration of murals, including West Side Stories (Richard Carradine) and Pura Avenida (multiple artists). Down at Ventura Harbor Village, Good Vibes Seaside Ventura (Andrew Rodriguez) calls for a destination photo op. And Seaward Avenue’s Pierpont district murals embrace surf culture and sense of place, like the vertical piece by artist Cynthia Polk covering the entire backside of the Surf Liquor building.

Murals can be found all around the city.

Very strong! From classical music via Ventura Music Festival to the various clubs, theaters, and festivals in town, we are so proud to be a part of the live music landscape and arts community. What makes Ventura Music Hall such an important venue to the community? We strive to be Ventura’s living room, bringing music and culture along with driving economic activity in town. Ventura Music Hall does not take a merchandise rate from artists—a rarity in the concert business. We donate $1 per ticket sold to local nonprofits. What genres can visitors expect to discover on the lineup?

Is there any seasonality to your performance schedule? If there is a good band that wants to play in Ventura, we will be open! Is there an emphasis on local acts or are most tour stops? We mainly have nationally touring acts, but also prioritize providing our stage for a diverse group of local acts, with an emphasis on development and helping artists make a living from music.

TONY’S PIZZARIA Created by the local landmark’s founder Johnny “Tony” Barrios back in 1959, “Tony’s Extra Special” remains a classic order. The New York-style pizza is topped with sausage, pepperoni, cheese, mushrooms, green peppers, black olives, and red onions. Tip: If you want to be totally true to the original, request anchovies!

spicy fish soup

PARADISE PANTRY Patrons are so fond of chef Kelly Briglio’s spicy fish soup, she can’t take it off the menu. “It has been a staple on the menu at all three of my restaurants, and has aged like a fine wine as my experience has evolved over the course of my career,” Briglio enthused. The stew comprises a nourishing medley of fresh fish prepared in a white wine, saffron, and tomato broth with roasted peppers, garlic, herbs, and micro cilantro.

chicken tikka masala

HIMALAYA Since opening in 2011, Himalaya has repeatedly been voted “Best Indian Food in Ventura,” and its chicken tikka masala rises to the top of the most popular menu items. Marinated and spiced chicken is cooked to tender perfection in the tandoor oven before simmering in a rich tomato sauce. Tip: If you don’t eat meat, try the vegetarian paneer tikka masala version for the same transportive flavors.

lasagna

PEIRANO’S Come hungry and with a dining companion (or five) to try Peirano’s decadent lasagna. Made to feed four to six diners, the sizable family-style feast features four layers of rich Italian seasoned beef, velvety ricotta, Parmigiano Reggiano, pecorino romano, shredded mozzarella, and house-made Bolognese and arrabbiata sauces. The garlic bread accompaniment is the perfect vessel to sop up any leftover saucy bites, a technique known as la scarpetta—the Italian expression for wanting to lick your plate clean!

ALOHA STEAKHOUSE A touch of theatrics makes this steak entrée all the more satisfying and impressive. Aloha Steakhouse pulls out all the stops to flambé filet mignon at the table. A splash of Grand Marnier makes the flames rise, and savory sautéed mushrooms, onions, and peppercorn sauce round out the presentation on the plate. The meat is meltin-your-mouth perfection.

fish tacos

SPENCER MAKENZIE’S FISH COMPANY A local legend and popular roadstop, Spencer Makenzie’s “World Famous Fish Taco” is made with your choice of grilled or tempura sushi-grade fish topped with chopped cabbage, cilantro, bell peppers, and house Spencer Sauce—all wrapped in a flour tortilla. One might be big enough to feel satiated, but you’ll probably want two. Tip: If you like spice, request your taco “Brooklyn style” for a touch of their Sweet Chili Fire sauce.

Go hog wild and add bacon, egg, or avocado.

peruvian ceviche

RUMFISH Y VINO Rumfish y Vino has authentic Central American roots (the owners opened the original in Belize), so it’s no surprise that their ceviche is exquisitely prepared. While all the seafood dishes on the menu are divine, the classic Peruvian ceviche, prepared with red snapper, ginger, sweet pepper, fresh-squeezed lime, cilantro, red onion, bell pepper, and habanero, is to die for. Order it as a sharable starter course.

Wines on our shelves hail from Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Maria Valley, Paso Robles, and Santa Cruz—we even carry a local winemaker, Wildflower, who procures her grapes from these regions and has her facilities here in Ventura. We also carry wines from up north in Sonoma, and even from down south in Cucamonga Valley. California has such a wealth of regions and beautiful wines coming from incredible people—we’re very fortunate.

WHAT OTHER REGIONS ARE REPRESENTED IN YOUR SELECTIONS? Oh, it’s a wild fun wine world out there now, and we carry a range of regions both domestic and international. We have your basics covered, such as the Willamette Valley, but we also have wines from less familiar regions like the Finger Lakes and the Texas High Plains. Internationally, we have wines from all over: the Loire Valley, Sicily, Emilia-Romagna, the Douro Valley, Morocco, Australia, Austria...the list is ever-changing.

Alexis Wade can be found pouring most evenings.

WHAT TYPES OF EVENTS DO YOU HOST AND HOW REGULARLY?

I try to schedule a few fun things each month to showcase the impressive people we have right here in our backyard. Food is obviously a great complement to wine, so it’s fun to have chefs come and share their skills. But sometimes, we host silly events like a hot dog house building contest. It has little to no relation to wine, but it was a fun and wacky community event.

WHAT ARE A FEW OF YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL PLACES TO DINE AND DRINK WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING?

I start my day at Singing Sun Coffee most mornings—I love the Zinger on the specialty drinks menu. I also love the chicken Katsu sandwich at Frontside. You can regularly find me at Taqueria Tepatitlan with a goblet of beer and a chile verde plate. I also like the bacon, egg, and cheese at Russell’s Donuts.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING PART OF VENTURA’S CREATIVE COMMUNITY AS A HOSPITALITY ENTREPRENEUR?

Perhaps it’s because we’re a smaller town, Ventura’s creative community—and community in every sense—has really shown up and been a pillar of support every step of the way.

Get cozy at a corner table.

Rumfish Y Vino BRINGING THE FLAVORS OF BELIZE TO VENTURA

Local restaurateurs John and Pam Solomon opened the original Rumfish y Vino in Belize, but Ventura’s relaxed beach vibe made it a natural spot to open a second location. A meal here is like a getaway to a tropical paradise (without the flight!). Sit outside on the charming patio under a canopy of lemon trees and twinkling lights. The menu sources fresh, sustainable ingredients from around Ventura County in Central American-inspired dishes. Start with Peruvian ceviche and plantain chips; signature entrees include Creole seabass and Caribbean fish stew. A local craft brew, classic cocktail, or glass of wine pairs perfectly with Rumfish y Vino’s excellent food. From the first sip to the last bite, a meal at Rumfish y Vino puts you in instant vacay mode. rumfishyvinoventura.com G e @rumfishyvino
