The San Francisco Peninsula is packed full of fun activities, great cuisine, beautiful nature, and interesting cultural experiences. Here’s how to carpe diem.
BY LUCY WOODS
Stretching from Brisbane to Mountain View and west from Pacifica to the shores of Half Moon Bay and Pescadero, The San Francisco Peninsula makes it easy to do more with your time. Towns, trails, beaches, and cultural stops are all within 30 to 45 minutes of each other, connected by scenic highways and Caltrain.
Think of this as your grab-andgo guide to exploring the Peninsula. Ready to get started?
FOR A GENTLE start to the day, order a cappuccino from Bonjour Bakehouse in San Mateo before strolling from Seal Point Park to Coyote Point Recreation Area along the San Francisco Bay Trail. This 1.4-mile segment of the trail offers scenic views of the bay with the occasional plane flying high above. Reward yourself after the walk with a tasty pastry from downtown San Mateo’s popular Backhaus bakery. To be immersed in nature, go for a morning hike among the redwoods and shady canyons at Huddart Park, perched above Woodside. After your hike, head to Buck’s of Woodside for a spot of brunch, or enjoy a coffee and snack at The Village Bakery.
IF YOU PREFER to start your day with a shot of adrenaline, grab a coffee at either Soul Grind Coffee Roasters or Rosalind Bakery in Pacifica, which incidentally serves up delicious sourdough loaves. Then, head to Pacifica State Beach for a surf lesson with Nor Cal Surf Shop. Just north of Pedro Point, the picturesque beach features mellow waves ideally suited for beginners.
As you continue down the coast, stop by the California Welcome Center at Half Moon Bay, now sensory inclusive certified through KultureCity, the world's leading nonprofit on sensory accessibility and acceptance. The center has trained staff and sensory resources to ensure every visitor feels supported and welcome.

THE BAY AREA is known as a hub for technical ingenuity and advancement. Learn about the history of Silicon Valley at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, which offers interactive exhibits showcasing the evolution of technological innovation. For a closer look at a tech giant, head to the Google headquarters.
Those visiting the Peninsula for the first time may be surprised to discover the stunning natural beauty of the region. Ravenswood Open Space Preserve is a great location for bird-watching and family adventures. Other outdoor activities include paddleboarding on Foster City’s lagoon.
For those looking for a spot of retail therapy, Hillsdale, Stanford, Town & Country Village, Marsh Manor, and Serramonte shopping centers are popular destinations. Burlingame and Redwood City also have lively downtowns with cute gift shops, boutique clothing stores, and specialty food stores.
FOR AN AFTERNOON that blends food and culture, Half Moon Bay Food Walking Tour invites you to sample delicious local cuisine while learning about the history and folklore of this much-loved coastal town. Have a look around the boutique shops here including Jupiter & Main and Crow’s Nest . You can also take part in more adventurous activities like kayaking with Half Moon Bay Kayak Co. or horseback riding along the shoreline with Sea Horse Ranch . If you are planning to drive along Highway 92, stop by Half Moon Bay Lavender and Half Moon Bay Nursery, which are a treat for the senses.

THE PENINSULA has some incredible restaurants, and downtown San Mateo has dozens of dining options. Tuck into authentic Italian pasta at Pausa Bar & Cookery or head to B Street for aburasoba noodles at Kajiken, or a cheese platter and glass of vino at A2 wine bar.
For music lovers, Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View has a festival vibe and hosts an impressive selection of musical artists. The intimate Vinyl Room in Burlingame hosts local DJs and free salsa lessons every Thursday. And when it's time to call it a night, rest your head at Park James Hotel in Menlo Park.
JETTYWAVE DISTILLERY, HALF MOON BAY
START WITH a drink at Half Moon Bay Brewing Company or Jettywave Distillery then drive up to Moss Beach Distillery, which serves a selection of locally caught seafood. Request a table with ocean views, and you may even catch a glimpse of a whale while tucking into your crab cakes. Along Highway 1 are beaches ideally suited for an evening stroll. Just south of Pacifica is Montara State Beach, which is framed by high bluffs with unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean, perfect to watch the sunset. Mussel Rock Park in Daly City is a great spot to watch paragliders floating through the air en masse.

Nestled between bay and ocean, the Skyline area is the Peninsula’s green heart.
It’s easy to spend an entire day in the Skyline area alone. Towering redwoods and an extensive trail system define Purisima Creek Redwoods, Windy Hill, and La Honda Creek
open space preserves— ideal for hiking, biking, and quiet reflection. A drive along Skyline Boulevard (Highway 35) reveals sweeping views, legendary stops like Alice’s Restaurant, and wine tasting at Thomas Fogarty Winery

Just minutes off Highway 1, Pacifica delivers easy access to some of California’s most dramatic coastline—surfer-friendly waves at Linda Mar Beach, spring wildflower trails at Mori Point, and local businesses like Soul Grind Coffee Roasters, with a patio for lingering.

Filoli’s Lamchin Interpretive Center acknowledges and looks back at the Peninsula’s Indigenous history.
BY ETHAN FLETCHER
BEFORE THE DAMS, bridges, freeways, and cities, the Peninsula was populated by the Lamchin people. In acknowledgement of that rich history, Filoli debuted the Lamchin Interpretive Center in 2024, recognizing the longtime hand that this independent tribe of the Indigenous Ramaytush Ohlone served as mindful stewards of the region’s beautiful and bountiful natural resources.
Located in a nature preserve, the center’s exhibitions illustrate the ways in which the Lamchin lived in harmony with the region’s plants, animals, and waterways. Featuring immersive mural, maps, and soundscapes, and curated in partnership with leaders of the present day Ramaytush Ohlone, the center also doesn’t shy away from the detrimental impacts that European colonization had on the landscape and its native people.
Once you’ve explored within, visitors can move outside to experience how the Peninsula may have

actually felt in those precolonial times. Opened in conjunction with the Lamchin Center, the Spring Creek nature trail loops hikers through redwoods and creek beds bursting with native flora, fauna, and wildlife that has populated this hillside Peninsula open space region for millennia—and where the legacy of the Ohlone still feels very much alive and present.
“As the current stewards of the land at Filoli, we recognize that we benefit from gathering, living, learning, and working on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone,” says Sonia Capitant, Filoli’s interim director of collections and interpretation. “The Lamchin Interpretive Center creates a dedicated space for the Association of Ramaytush Ohlone to share their story as the original stewards of this place, and it reflects our ongoing partnership and commitment to honoring that history and their continued impact on the Peninsula.”
Groundbreaking ideas aren’t just born here—they thrive.
The San Francisco Peninsula has long been a proving ground for bold ideas. South San Francisco is the birthplace of modern biotechnology and Genentech, which pioneered breakthrough treatments that reshaped global medicine. In Redwood City, Electronic Arts (EA) helped launch the video game industry into mainstream culture.
Innovation also takes flight here. The Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos chronicles the region’s role in aviation history, while San Francisco International Airport continues to lead in sustainability, design, and passenger experience.
And for a dose of Silicon Valley lore, there’s Buck’s of Woodside, where countless world-changing deals—from Tesla to Hotmail— were famously hashed out over a meal.

In Millbrae on Crystal Springs Regional Trail, interpretive panels document the lives of Ohlone and Spanish explorers. And west of San Bruno at Sweeney Ridge, a rock monument marks the scenic spot where the Aramai tribe accompanied Europeans, and is where the foreigners saw San Francisco Bay for the first time.
This year, Levi’s Stadium in neighboring Santa Clara plays host to two of sports’ grandest spectacles: the Super Bowl and FIFA World Cup —just two examples of how the Bay Area’s sports culture epicenter tends to trend south. For more information, visit discoversantaclara.org
BY ETHAN FLETCHER

This summer won’t be the first time the South Bay has played a central role in the beautiful game’s biggest showcase.
Both Stanford University and San Jose State’s Spartan stadiums hosted games for the first-ever World Cup on American soil in 1994, including a Round of 16 battle at Stanford in which a plucky U.S. squad bowed out 0–1 to eventual champions Brazil.
America responded to this defeat during the 1999 Women’s World Cup, when a legendary U.S. team defeated Brazil 2–0 in a semifinal match at Stanford Stadium. Six days later in Pasadena, San Jose’s Brandi Chastain created one of the most iconic moments in sports history when she ripped off her shirt to celebrate her penalty kick goal, defeating China in the final.
Historically, the Peninsula has played an outsized role in the Bay Area’s sports scene. In his recent book, Cradle of Champions: A Selected History of San Mateo County Sports , longtime local sports journalist John Horgan details the area’s robust sporting culture. Here are a few highlights:
• Three Hall of Fame NFL coaches have passed through the halls of the College of San Mateo: John Madden, Bill Walsh, and Dick Vermeil.
• San Mateo all-boys Catholic high school Junipero Serra has fostered a remarkable lineup of professional athletes, including the likes of home-run king Barry Bonds, six-time Super Bowl–winning quarterback Tom Brady, and Hall of Fame wide receiver Lynn Swann.
• While Redwood City is no longer the unofficial home to the San Francisco 49ers as it was during the team’s 1980s heyday, the region remains a popular home to local athletes, including Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry.
The South Bay educational institution doesn’t just foster great minds, it produces athletes at a prolific rate. In addition to 565 individual titles, Stanford has won 137 NCAA team championships as of the 2024/25 school year, the most of any university in the country. In addition, a whopping 59 Cardinal athletes competed at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics while hauling in 39 medals, a record for any one school and tied for 11th place among all countries that year in total medal count.

IT’S NEVER BEEN easier to get around the Peninsula. Caltrain, the region’s commuter rail line, connects San Francisco to San Jose, with frequent stops in between. With the launch of fully electrified service, Caltrain now offers more frequent, faster, and quieter trains, with many stations served every 15–20 minutes during peak hours and every 30 minutes on weekends. Electric trains significantly reduce noise and emissions compared to the old diesel fleet, cutting greenhouse gases and creating a more pleasant ride for commuters and visitors alike. Champion mountain biker Kate Courtney reflects on the Peninsula’s culture of innovation, access, and advocacy—on and off the trail.
A PROFESSIONAL athlete and an advocate for women’s cycling, Kate Courtney is a world-class mountain biker whose career—and values—have been shaped by The San Francisco Peninsula.
“Growing up in the Bay Area and later attending college at Stanford, I was immersed in a culture that celebrates innovation and actively looks for ways to make the world better,” she says. “The idea that what you do matters, and that it can create change, is something you feel deeply on the Peninsula. It’s a place where people live in possibility and are willing to do the work to go after it.”
Courtney’s pursuit of possibility has extended beyond her own competition. In addition to winning mountain biking’s World Cup series and the Leadville Trail 100, she founded the She Sends Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to connecting, supporting, and inspiring women and girls through mountain biking.
In her early days of racing, Courtney was often the only girl on an all-male team.
“I remember longing for the camaraderie and encouragement that comes from training alongside other female athletes,” she notes. While She Sends operates nationally, the Bay Area is an important focus. Youth cycling initiatives include the NorCal GRiT program, which empowers student athletes to become leaders in their communities through training, inclusive rides, and skills workshops.
When she’s riding closer to home, Courtney gravitates toward the Peninsula’s blend of accessibility and escape. One of her favorite routes is climbing Alpine Road trail and riding across the ridge to Windy Hill Open Space Preserve.
“It’s approachable, but still captures the magic of riding in this area, often delivering beautiful sunsets and reminding me that a quick escape can still feel like a meaningful adventure,” she says. With trails so close to urban life, Courtney values experiences that offer perspective without pulling her too far from her goals.
“I want my legacy on and off the bike to be about sending it, and being willing to go all the way for what matters most to me.”

The idea that what you do matters, and that it can create change, is something you feel deeply on the Peninsula.”

SPANNING 450 square miles, The San Francisco Peninsula is home to thousands of acres of preserved open space, from redwood forests in the Santa Cruz Mountains to coastal bluffs along the Pacific and wetlands edging San Francisco Bay. This balance between development and conservation didn’t happen by chance—it’s the result of decades of coordinated stewardship.
DID YOU KNOW?
70 PERCENT OF THE PENINSULA IS PRESERVED OPEN SPACE.
Local advocacy group Green Foothills has played a key role in protecting farmland and open space since the 1970s, when voters established an open space district to safeguard the Peninsula’s natural character. Today, much of that land is managed by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, which oversees roughly 65,000 acres of protected trails and habitats across San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. Complementing that work, San Mateo County Parks maintains 23 parks throughout the region, many with ranger-led hikes and educational programs. Behind the scenes, the Peninsula Open Space Trust acquires and restores land for permanent protection—often allowing sustainable farming or grazing. Together, these efforts ensure the Peninsula’s wild spaces remain accessible, resilient, and protected for future generations.

Widely recognized as a hub of innovation, The San Francisco Peninsula also offers a rich and rewarding arts, culture, and entertainment scene. From historic estates and museums to live music venues and neighborhood galleries, creativity here is woven into daily life—often in unexpected places.

Gerald Cantor Rodin Sculpture Garden is open 24/7 and includes iconic sculptures like The Gates of Hell and The Walking Man, while the adjacent Cantor Arts Center spans ancient and modern works. History unfolds in equally compelling ways across the Peninsula. In Woodside, Filoli pairs a grand 20th-century estate with 16 acres of meticulously maintained gardens. In Redwood City, the Domini Hoskins Black History Museum & Learning Center preserves and celebrates Black history through exhibitions, education, and community storytelling. And in downtown Redwood City, the San Mateo County History Museum traces the Peninsula’s past—from Indigenous communities to modern-day growth.
The Peninsula’s creative legacy also reaches skyward. At the Hiller Aviation Museum in
San Carlos, historic aircraft and hands-on exhibits trace the region’s pivotal role in aviation. Travelers passing through San Francisco International Airport (SFO) can continue the journey at the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum, which are housed in a replica of a 1930s passenger lobby.
GALLERIES & CREATIVE SPACES
Art thrives at a local level as well. In Pacifica, Sanchez Art Center blends gallery exhibitions with open studios and live music, creating a welcoming, communitydriven hub. M Stark Gallery in Half Moon Bay spotlights Peninsula-based artists through rotating solo exhibitions. Further down the coast in Pescadero, Madrone Arts operates as an artist cooperative, curating thoughtful group shows that reflect the region's landscapes. And Art Bias in San Carlos is a nonprofit creative hub housing 60 working artists.

In addition to preserving the general history of the airlines, the collection maintained by the Aviation Museum and Library also focuses on the history of SFO itself. The museum and its displays in terminals’ public spaces make a statement that the Bay Area is a unique culturally and intellectually curious region. We hope visitors will appreciate the many different aspects of history, culture, and design that have been touched or influenced by commercial aviation.“

This San Carlos nonprofit supports dozens of local artists while spreading creativity across the region.
BY ETHAN FLETCHER
TERRA FULLER has a simple description of her job as executive director of Art Bias: “My role is to bring structure and shape to this crazy, free-flowing space.”
That’s more complicated than it sounds, as the 30-plus-year-old nonprofit plays an outsized role in supporting the arts on The San Francisco Peninsula. Its San Carlos headquarters provides studio space and support for 60 Bay Area visual artists, whose mediums range from oil painting, charcoal drawing, and photography to weaving, felt sculpture, and even artificial intelligence.
Meanwhile, Fuller forges partnerships with outside organizations to infuse that creativity into the greater community.
Art Bias conducts free classes for high schoolers, low-income seniors, at-risk youth, and people with intellectual disabilities, in addition to collaborating on public art projects such as a recent 6,000-square-foot street mural in downtown San Carlos.
“We definitely don’t see art just as a consumer product to be purchased,” Fuller says. “It’s a way to connect with the community.”
These classes and public works have the added benefit of providing steady work for
Art Bias members, which, along with access to below-market studio space, art materials, and professional development, affords artists from a wide range of backgrounds an opportunity to support themselves.
“San Mateo is a very diverse county and we want that diversity to be seen within our walls,” Fuller says. “The Bay Area art world can be elitist and reflect a high-income inequality. We want to lessen that divide. Making art available to those who don’t normally have it is really important and it makes our organization sustainable for the long term.”
One of the best ways to witness and support this mission, Fuller says, is to attend one of the monthly Art Bias open studios. On the first Sunday of every month, from noon to 4 p.m., more than 20 artists open their work spaces to the public. (Depending on the month, visitors can also attend gallery exhibitions and more.)
“Our artists just love to talk and show off their work,” she says. “Every month is different and we’re happy when people come in who aren’t a part of the art scene world. There’s no snobbery here: It’s a very welcoming community, which I think is something that sets us apart.”
CuriOdyssey in San Mateo blends science and nature in a playful, family-friendly setting. Part science museum, part nature center, it makes physics, biology, and environmental science accessible through hands-on exhibits.
For even more discovery, the Exploratorium at Pier 15 in San Francisco is where science, art, and human perception collide in interactive exhibits— and adults can explore after hours during the weekly After Dark program.
As day turns to night, the Peninsula’s entertainment

scene comes alive. The historic Fox Theatre in downtown Redwood City hosts touring musicians and performances in a restored 1929 movie theater. On the Stanford campus, Frost Amphitheater offers an unforgettable outdoor concert experience, with tiered seating in a park-like setting.
For theater lovers, Hillbarn Theatre & Conservatory in Foster City delivers polished productions season after season, while the Pacifica Center for the Arts champions both visual and performing arts. Elsewhere, Pinstripes San Mateo blends bowling lanes and bocce courts with food and drink, and Burlingame’s Vinyl Room keeps the energy going with karaoke nights and salsa dancing.

This Greek and Roman architecture-inspired monument commemorates the 1934 completion of the Hetch Hetchy reservoir and water system, which provides water to 2.7 million people in San Francisco, Santa Clara, Alameda, and San Mateo counties. It’s a picturesque spot for a picnic, photo op, or even a wedding.

Inclusive spaces across the Peninsula welcome neurodivergent visitors. Travel should feel welcoming for everyone—and The San Francisco Peninsula is taking meaningful steps to support sensory-inclusive experiences. At San Francisco International Airport, a dedicated Sensory Room provides a calming space designed for neurodivergent travelers and families, with soft lighting, tactile elements, and quiet zones that help ease the stress of air travel. Coastside, Half Moon Bay partnered with KultureCity, a nonprofit focused on sensory accessibility, to create more inclusive public spaces. The California Welcome Center at Half Moon Bay offers sensory-inclusive bags equipped with tools like noise-canceling headphones and fidget items to help manage sensory input. Families can also visit the Magical Bridge Playground in Redwood City, an award-winning, fully inclusive playground thoughtfully designed for children of all abilities.

At CuriOdyssey in San Mateo, science comes alive through hands-on exhibits, amazing wildlife, and outdoor exploration. Designed for curious kids and the grown-ups who love learning alongside them, CuriOdyssey invites families to discover, play, and wonder together, with every visit sparking new questions and joyful discoveries.

The San Francisco Peninsula’s thriving farms and fishing operations provide seasonal surprises all year long.
BY RENEE BRINCKS

Scan for a complete list of farms, farm stands, and u-picks.
Nearly two dozen local farmers markets feature produce from Peninsula-area fields, while farm stands, tours, and events offer engaging opportunities to meet growers and sample seasonal treats. Visit Farmer John’s Pumpkin Farm (Half Moon Bay), which grows 60 gourd varieties, or wander autumn pumpkin patches and summer u-pick berry gardens at Webb Ranch (Portola Valley) and Blue House Farm (San Gregorio).
Each October, Skyline Chestnuts (La Honda) opens its old-growth orchards for chestnut picking. And the gorgeous u-pick sunflower fields at Andreotti Family Farm (Half Moon Bay) peak in September. Join a handson fermentation workshop at Pie Ranch or pet baby goats during a spring visit to Harley Farms Goat Dairy (both in Pescadero). The farm’s award-winning cheeses go well with picnic items from Arcangeli Grocery Co. (Pescadero), which is famous for deli sandwiches and artichoke garlic-herb bread. (See page 43 for more.)
Pillar Point Harbor anchors the Peninsula’s fishing industry, with more than 50 commercial and sport fishing boats operating from this sheltered harbor. Depending on the season, home cooks can purchase king salmon, black cod, Dungeness crab, halibut, and more straight from the source. To catch your own fish, charter a boat or cast a line from the public fishing pier. And for an up-to-date list of just-caught seafood sold straight off the dock, check the San Mateo County Harbor District’s Fish Line website ( fishlineapp.com). Visit surrounding restaurants to see how chefs use each day’s catch. Pelagic Fish Market & Grill , at the end of the pier, sells fish and seafood from Pillar Point fleets. Enjoy a crab and brew pairing at Half Moon Bay Brewing Company or celebrate happy hour over sautéed prawns at La Costanera . Nearby, Barbara’s Fishtrap has dished up hearty house-made clam chowder for more than five decades.
This Coastside festival captures the spirit of autumn on the Peninsula. Every October, the Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival transforms the coastal town into the Pumpkin Capital of the World. Dating back more than 50 years, the beloved fall tradition celebrates the region’s rich agricultural heritage with pumpkinthemed treats, live entertainment, and world-famous giant gourds.

Many Peninsula chefs weave local seasonal ingredients into dishes and drinks. As you explore, look for the As Fresh As It Gets logo, which indicates you're about to enjoy Peninsula-grown produce and products.

Shop fresh foods and support local growers. Weekly markets all across the Peninsula bring together regional farmers, bakers, and artisan food purveyors offering everything from just-picked fruits and vegetables to handcrafted cheeses and wild-caught seafood. Many markets also feature live music, cooking demonstrations, and local food trucks.
Meet Jeff Roller, cofounder of Half Moon Bay Wasabi, who’s redefining what fresh wasabi can be—one foggy harvest at a time.
JEFF ROLLER AND TIM HALL
launched Half Moon Bay Wasabi in 2011. Drawing on science and construction backgrounds, they built greenhouses and devised a system for raising the finicky, fog-loving plants in pots with water swirling past the roots.
Wasabi takes 18 months to grow. Its fresh leaves, flowers, and stems taste more vibrant and nuanced than the horseradish-based wasabi stand-ins common in restaurants.
“Ours hits really fast, and then it leaves really fast. It has sort of a sweet aftertaste, and you can get some grassy flavors,” Roller says. “It changes as you eat it. You grate it and you have to eat it within 20 minutes. After that, the heat is gone.”
The company sells mostly to restaurants, along with a few markets and home chefs; though plenty of customers have pickled, juiced, julienned, and made oils from the plants. San Francisco's Sequoia Sake, for instance, makes a wasabi-infused release. Locally, Half Moon Bay Wasabi enhances dishes at The RitzCarlton, Half Moon Bay, Menlo Park's Robin, and Katsu in Mountain View.
Roller and Hall value their partnerships with Peninsula-area chefs, who sample different cultivars and share feedback with them, and Roller also experiments with wasabi in his home kitchen.
“You can’t go wrong with a little dollop on each piece of sashimi, but it’s really good on steak,” he says. “A nice rib eye is my favorite way to use it.”

Jeff Roller’s go-to Coastside recs
Roller likes to eat at Barbara’s Fishtrap (“Their fish and chips are classic.”) and at Old Princeton Landing, both in Half Moon Bay. He also recommends the brisket banh mi at Breakwater Barbecue in El Granada.
The mile-long trail at Bean Hollow State Beach, south of Pescadero, is Roller’s favorite coastal stop. “You walk by the intertidal zone and seals sit there all the time. It's just a beautiful spot.”
Eat and drink your way through the region’s culinary scene.

SEE WHAT’S IN SEASON at Sam’s Chowder House in Half Moon Bay on the daily catch section of the menu, or try locally caught oysters at Ocean Terrace at The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay. In Redwood City, Hurrica Restaurant & Bar serves live-fire American entrees and seafood along Westpoint Harbor.
Look for sun-splashed patio seating at Sushi Roku at the Stanford Shopping Center or settle in for beautifully presented plates at San Mateo’s Sushi Edomata or Michelin-recommended Sushi Yoshizumi . Dine on lobster rolls at New England Lobster Company in Burlingame or order ceviche from Pacific Catch in San Mateo. For the Francophile, tuck in to the moules marinières at

Left Bank in Menlo Park.
Follow Highway 101 south to Freewheel Brewing Company in Redwood City, a welcoming spot for beer-battered fish and chips and English-style ales. Pacifica’s Rockaway Beach Brewery pours housebrewed pints that pair well with the coastal restaurant’s clam chowder and seared rockfish.
And though it’s best known for smoky ribs and brisket, Breakwater Barbecue in El Granada also offers baja fish tacos made with local cod and apple-cilantro coleslaw. Established in 1894, Duarte’s Tavern in Pescadero puts a Portuguese spin on fresh-caught fish. Stop in on Saturdays and Sundays for a bowl of steamy cioppino. —Renee Brincks

Meet Eddie Sassin, owner of Soul Grind Coffee Roasters in Pacifica.
BY RENEE BRINCKS
AT SOUL GRIND , owner Eddie Sassin has created more than a place to grab a latte—it’s a community hub shaped by Pacifica’s surf, trails, and laid-back coastal rhythm. With a roastery you can see, conversations that unfold naturally, and drinks inspired by global coffee traditions, Soul Grind reflects both Sassin’s personal journey and the Peninsula lifestyle he loves.
Q: Why did you choose to open a coffee shop in Pacifica?
A: The community was ready for something like this. But also, it’s what I kind of needed. When you mix business with life, it can work. I just love the community. I like the outdoors—I’m an ocean person—and this is a little gem here.
Q: What makes Soul Grind special?
A: My goal was to make this a space that gives people a visual connection to coffee roasting, and a space where they can sit and have a conversation and meet people and gather.
Q: What are your bestsellers?
A: The Cuban latte is a signature. In Cuba, it’s more of a brown sugar whipped into an espresso, and we Americanized it by putting a little condensed milk in there and pulling the shot. We also have a drink called the Cliffside, a latte with a certain ratio of vanilla and caramel. We also do cortados, Vietnamese iced coffees, and all the basics.
Q: How do you spend your free time?
A: From out of my store, I’ll go hit the hills on my mountain bike. Montara and El Granada have

really good mountain biking, and the hiking is incredible here. Surfing is also incredible. You can rent boards from Nor Cal Surf Shop and Traveler Surf Club & Coastal Outpost
Q: What’s next for Soul Grind Coffee?
A: We have a coffee bar in Half Moon Bay, down by Old Princeton Landing, that’s going to open sometime this summer.
Q: What are some Peninsula favorites for dinner and drinks?
A: If I’m getting Middle Eastern food, it’s Mazra in Redwood City and San Bruno. Those guys are really good people. Jettywave Distillery in Half Moon Bay is cool. They’ve got really good drinks and food. I also like Old Princeton Landing Public House and Grill, near Jettywave, for music and seafood.

Meet Chris Benedetti, the fifth generation behind Arcangeli Grocery Co. in Pescadero.
BY RENEE BRINCKS
FOUNDED IN 1929 by Italian immigrant Sante Arcangeli, Arcangeli Grocery Co. has long been a cornerstone of Pescadero. Today, the family-run shop is known for fresh bread, hearty deli sandwiches, local wine, and a commitment to doing things the same careful way it always has. Chris Benedetti, the fifth generation to carry the torch, is helping ensure that legacy continues.
Q: People have loved Arcangeli for nearly a century. What keeps them coming back?
A: I think it starts with authenticity. We have never tried to get too big or do anything too fancy. We really just want to put out good food, the best way we can. Our “work hard and be nice” philosophy carries over to our signature item, the artichoke garlic-herb bread.
Q: What goes into your legendary bread?
A: We hand roll artichoke hearts into a garlic-herb French bread and paint every loaf with our buttery garlic
spread. It gets cooked all day long, so that you can always get a fresh-baked loaf. It’s a labor of love, but well worth the effort.
Q: Would you say your artichoke bread reflects the Peninsula?
A: I think our bread is almost the perfect combination of two signatures of Coastside history: artichokes and Italian food. My grandfather, Norm, and my father, Mike, are the masterminds behind it. The original thought was to combine the history of the store with the history of the coast. I think they succeeded.
Q: What sets this place apart?
A: I am biased, but I feel like Pescadero is one of the most unique places on the planet. I don’t know where else you can have redwoods, beaches, parks, history, and, of course, good food, all in such a small town that feels lost in time. One of my greatest joys is hearing the stories of generations of families that have visited our store. I feel very blessed to be able to continue that experience.

Spirits enthusiasts should keep an eye out for Whiskies of the World, a traveling tasting event featuring global whiskey producers, educational seminars, and curated pours. thesanfranciscopeninsula.com

Q: How would you describe your Belmont taproom vibe?
A: In terms of the atmosphere, it’s really just how Denzel and I are. Both of our homes growing up, and even to this day, were a home base for folks. We’ve been brewing in my garage for the last six years. Everybody would always come over, feel included, feel welcome. We wanted to extend that to our space.
Q: Brewing With Brothas is the first Black-owned brewery to get its start in East Palo Alto. What does that mean to you?
A: We’ve gone into breweries and we don’t always see people who look like us. We wanted to change that. One of the reasons we first decided to do the brewery was because we wanted a place in East Palo Alto that we could go and have a beer and chill. Opening a location there is still a goal.
Q: How has the Peninsula beer community changed?
A: When I started going to breweries, I found myself going to the South Bay or Oakland a lot more. And I was like, “Why is it always happening over there?” We just wanted to contribute to the whole Peninsula. We love Alpha Acid Brewing Company and Blue Oak Brewing Company in San Carlos. We did a collab with Freewheel Brewing Company in Redwood City. We’re trying to help build that community around here.
Q: Where do you go to hang?
A: I’ve got to give a shout out to our guys at Alpha Acid. Ale Arsenal in San Carlos is a place I really like, too. They have great quality beers over there, and a lot of beers from around the Bay Area. Also, Three Brothers Tacos in East Palo Alto. I usually get the taco plate, which is three tacos with beans and rice.

MEET UP
Scan for a complete list of event space on The San Francisco Peninsula.

Distinctive venues, inspired settings, and seamless access make
The San Francisco Peninsula a natural choice for meetings and events.
THE SAN FRANCISCO Peninsula brings together everything planners look for in a meeting destination: easy access via San Francisco International Airport (SFO), a central location between San Francisco and the Silicon Valley, and a range of venues that balance productivity with memorable surroundings. Here, a strategy session can be followed by a garden stroll, a museum reception, or a waterfront dinner—often all in the same day.
For meetings that benefit from inspiration, the Peninsula offers settings beyond the traditional ballroom. Filoli in Woodside pairs formal gardens and a grand estate with quiet elegance, ideal for executive retreats or receptions. Innovation

takes center stage at the Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos and the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, where events unfold among aircraft, artifacts, and exhibitions that celebrate human ingenuity.
The restored Fox Theatre in Redwood City delivers vintage glamour with modern production capabilities, while Long Branch Saloon & Farms offers an interactive themed setting great for team building.
From large-scale conferences to intimate meetings, Peninsula hotels are designed to flex. The Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport anchors the region with extensive meeting space and unmatched proximity to SFO. Coastal gatherings shine at The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay, where ocean views elevate board meetings and receptions alike. Additional options include the Grand Bay Hotel San Francisco in Redwood City, Four Seasons Hotel Silicon Valley in East Palo Alto, and many other full-service hotels that offer contemporary meeting rooms and advanced AV support. For larger events, the South San Francisco Conference Center, Cow Palace and San Mateo County Event Center have the capacity to host conventions, expos, and multiday programs.
Smaller groups and off-site dinners have no shortage of options. From polished Italian-style dining (Stella) and Mediterranean-forward restaurants (Amara) to coastal brewpubs (Half Moon Bay Brewing Company), private dining venues across the Peninsula offer flexible spaces that encourage conversation and connection—perfect for client dinners, leadership gatherings, and team celebrations.
Ready to plan your meeting? The San Francisco Peninsula team is ready to help.
