A long-lauded top spot for families and pet parents, Marina Park recently revealed an enormous new playground complex with nine distinct areas, many with a seafaring vibe. This addition enhances the picnic and barbecue areas, with convenient parking for easy access.
FOR ALL AGES
Called “Mother’s Beach” thanks to its sheltered cove and gentle waves, Harbor Cove Beach promises perfect conditions for kayaking while watching kites soar above. Accessible amenities, which include restrooms, beach wheelchairs, and lifeguards on the weekends in summer, ensure beach days for all. No matter the time of the year, it’s also a super spot to spy the boats moving in and out of the harbor. The jetty also promises excellent fishing.
The point break at Rincon Beach is such a marquee spot to hang ten that it’s nicknamed “Queen of the Coast.” The most famous section of the three-part wave is the long right-breaking area. Rivermouth, the fastest section, has tube rides at low tide. The top of the point— called “Indicator”—has extra-fast left breaks.

Asking if Ventura has good surf is like asking if Nepal has tall mountains or if Seattle gets rain. When it comes to wave variety and consistent conditions, Ventura has it all. You can surf beginner waves soft as down or adrenalinebaiting behemoths—all of which will leave you with a lifetime memory. To ensure you choose the right spot for your skill set, let Bill “Blinky” Hubina, retired owner of Ventura Surf Shop, Ventura historian, and foreverstoked 81-year-old, be your guide to a real-life magic carpet ride.

Ventura’s go-to spot for beginners, Mondo’s easy-breaking waves unfold like soft ribbons. Because there are lots of beginners, it’s a friendly spot. It can also offer long rides.

She’s called the “Queen of the Coast” for good reason—Rincon’s perfect point break waves peel for so long your legs burn. The catch? Every surfer on the planet knows this. It’s best during winter, but the Queen has been known to pleasantly surprise throughout the year.

Better known as the Rivermouth, this long expanse of beach across the street from Ventura Harbor is peppered with sandbars and waves, offering room to spread out. The highlight can be the mouth of the river itself.

Moderate to advanced Notes from Blinky: “In ’69 or ’70 we had this horrendous flood, and there was a sandbar that went out for a mile. The waves were spectacular; in fact, the same thing happened just recently.”
Just north of Ventura, Emma Wood’s beach break serves up wedgy peaks with quick drops and short, fast rides. During big winter swells, a reef a half-mile from shore serves up expert-only barrels. There’s fun to be had along the entire stretch of beach just up the road year-round.

Famed for its long rides on perfectly shaped waves and often referred to by locals as C Street, you can ride a wave for nearly half a mile when conditions produce big winter swells. Yes, you read that right. It’s also one of Ventura’s most consistent surf spots, often offering something to ride when other spots aren’t breaking.

No matter where you get in the water, Hubina reminds all to be polite. At California Street, there are signs posted that spell out the golden rules of surfing. Learn them. Know them. Live them.
It’s impossible to spend much time in Ventura and not hear the unmistakable rumble of four wheels speeding across concrete. When skateboarding rose to prominence in the ’60s and ’70s, the sport quickly etched itself into the city’s culture and history, following in the footsteps of its ocean predecessor, the surfboard. Legendary local skateboard manufacturer Powell-Peralta is setting the trend for the sport’s future.
Powell-Peralta was named for its two founders: George Powell and Stacy Peralta. The company started in Santa Barbara in 1978 but moved to Ventura in 2018. In its nearly 50-year history, the manufacturer has become a part of skate culture through innovative gear and its Bones Brigade team of pros that included Tony Hawk.

Westpark Skate Park , one of Ventura’s oldest skate parks, reopened in August 2025 after a $2 million-dollar renovation.
Boarders now ollie, flip, and slide around 20,000 square feet of rails, stairs, and quarter-pipes. There’s even an empty pool and a volcano to shred. Local artists
Joshua Burns and Kyle Navarro added vibrant murals around the park that proudly embrace Ventura’s art scene. Other parks to drop in include Pacific Skate Park and Hobert Skate Park.
designer at Powell-Peralta, the company builds gear that’s meant to last. While other brands frequently cycle out designs, PowellPeralta will make a board and sell it for years.
“We’re kind of resisting the ephemerality of standard skate culture,” Lind says. “We put stuff out that is a lasting thing and will have more staying power as far as cultural history is concerned.”
Holding on to what works applies to Powell-Peralta’s board graphics, too. The company continues to work with SoCal artist Vernon Courtlandt Johnson, who created the company’s iconic art in the early years.
For skaters old and new, a Powell-Peralta skateboard is more than just four wheels connected to a plank of wood. It’s deeper than that.
As Lind puts it, “It makes you more connected to a legacy.”

“We have trails for people of all fitness levels and skills,” says Ventura Land Trust executive director Melissa Baffa. “Nature is good for you.” And you’re encouraged to come out and play.
The sign at the trailhead reads “Department of Fun.” There’s no better description of what lies beyond: 2,123 acres of coastal sage scrub, creeks that run like sunshine, wind-kissed vistas, and groves of gnarled oaks.
Harmon Canyon is both a pastoral playground for hikers, runners, and bikers and a place for soul-healing solitude. Plop down on the bench at the summit of the Farr Family Trail Search for ruins where locals once tucked away for illegal nips during Prohibition on Trail 105. Look for tracks of local residents (bobcat, deer, mountain lion). Harmon has something for everyone.
“If you want to go for an easy walk and talk, [it has] trails for that. If you want to get your heart pounding, you can find that as well,” says Baffa.
There’s no better—or prettier—way to get the lay of the land than a leisurely stroll through the 107-acre Ventura Botanical Gardens. The gardens are carved into the hillsides just behind Ventura City Hall, and the paths that wind up those hillsides offer the finest seascape views. The gardens themselves offer a lovely wander among more than 120,000 plants from the Mediterranean climes of the world, including Southern California. Perhaps the loveliest part of the gardens is near the top along the ridge. Here you’ll find the South Africa section, home to protea, African bulbs, geraniums, and giant aloe trees.
VENTURA HILLS NATURE PRESERVE
The new kid in town, this preserve spreads across 1,645 hilly acres and currently features about eight miles of trails for hikers and mountain bikers (no e-bikes, please), and many of the trails are steep. Trail 101, for instance, rises 600 feet in the first mile—but going up has its rewards.
“The views are incredible,” Baffa says. “From the very top of the preserve you can see the Topa Topa Mountains, and then spin around in a 360 and see the Santa Monica Mountains and the Channel Islands.”
Take note, there is far less shade here than at Harmon Canyon, but the two preserves still share much of the same beauty and solace. Hike to the summits and watch ravens ride the wind.

Prior to your trip to the islands (or in lieu of a trip if you don’t have the time), it’s a fine idea to visit the Channel Islands National Park Visitor Center at the end of Spinnaker Drive. Just a short walk from Island Packers’ Ventura Harbor location, the Visitor Center has great displays, a 25-minute movie that gives a terrific overview of the islands, and helpful rangers and docents who can answer any question you have.
Island Packers christened its first boat when Lyndon Johnson was president and gas was $0.34 a gallon.
“Mother’s Day 1968,” says Cherryl Connally, daughter of Island Packers founders Bill and Lil.
Connally’s responsibilities have expanded far beyond small repairs, as she’s now co-owner of the still family-run company, the Channel Islands National Park’s sole concessionaire.
Last year, Island Packers took some 170,000 passengers out to the islands or on a handful of specialty trips, including whale watching and pelagic birding excursions. She assures that seeing orcas speed beneath the water or a blue whale, the largest animal on Earth, rise out of the sea are sights that never get old.

Santa Cruz Island is the largest and offers several trails and hikes. Consider the 7.5-mile round-trip hike from Scorpion Beach (the Island Packers boat drops you here) to Smuggler’s Cove. This happy journey gives you a taste of everything the islands have to offer: spectacular views of the Pacific, beaches, mountains, valleys, grasslands, and, in springtime, an explosion of wildflowers.
There’s also world-class sea kayaking on Santa Cruz, including, weather permitting, a chance to kayak into the Painted Cave, one of the largest sea caves in the world. Channel Islands Adventure Company offers guided sea kayaking and snorkel tours (gear included).

Here are a few tips to maximize your time.
BEST TIME TO VISIT? Dealer’s choice. In spring, island flowers are in full bloom. Summer is warmer and seas are calmer but busier June–August. Fall is good for sea kayaking thanks to calm winds and waters. Winter unveils some of the loveliest sunsets and sparsest crowds.
BRING SNACKS AND A LOT OF WATER. There’s no food for sale on the islands and little to no water beyond the campgrounds. Packing out your trash is required.
DRESS IN LAYERS AND BRING A JACKET. No matter how warm it is on the mainland, the islands are often decidedly cooler. Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, and sturdy, comfortable closed-toe shoes are also musts.
WANT TO OVERNIGHT?
Confirm campsite availability through recreation.gov, book your ferry trip with Island Packers, and then reserve a campsite. Be prepared for primitive facilities, as the toilets are of the rustic vault or pit variety.

Ventura’s whalewatching season runs almost year-round. From roughly mid-December through mid-April, Pacific gray whales pass through on the way to Baja California. From mid-February through May, the same whales make the return trip, often with newborns in tow. June through mid-September is blue whale and humpback season.

Because the islands are isolated from the mainland, nearly 150 of the more than 2,000 species of plants and animals that exist in the park are found nowhere else in the world, among them the island fox and the brilliant blue island scrub jay. If you’re lucky enough to encounter them when on an island, here are some tips to keep them, and you, safe.
• Move slowly and quietly. Better yet, sit still and watch.
• Keep your distance—at least 25 feet.
• Don’t shine lights on them.
• Don’t alter their behavior. Don’t feed them. Don’t move or add things to their habitat. Don’t leave litter.
• Out on the water, keep 100-yard clearance of offshore rocks, cliffs, or beaches with birds, seals, or sea lions.

To Build a Boat
INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE BRINGING BACK A CENTURIES-OLD TRADITION.
Alan Salazar’s not just leading a team to build Indigenous flat-bottom canoes (called tomols) at Vita Art Center. He’s reintroducing a lost art.
“Ventura was one of the last places where tomols were built, about 170 to 190 years ago,” says Salazar, an elder with the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians who has Chumash and Tataviam ancestry. Three tomols are being built by local tribal and community members, with plans to put one in the water in 2026 and the eventual goal of paddling ancestral Chumash territory.

“Tribal people lived on the [Channel Islands], hunting sea otters and collecting abalone,” says Salazar. “We were friends and family with [them] so we needed transportation back and forth.”
While it may take up to two years to train paddlers to travel their ancestral route, it will be a voyage worth the wait.

Having acquired 3,978 acres across seven preserves (and counting), the Ventura Land Trust ’s mission is to permanently preserve open spaces and protect everything that lives within them, from microscopic insects to megafauna like bears and mountain lions. To accomplish this green goal, VLT removes invasive plants and old ranch fencing, picks up trash in watersheds, reduces river pollution, and restores native flora.

INSIDE THESE large buildings, you’ll find some of Ventura’s most prolific local makers. For a proper self-guided craft beer tour, check out MadeWest and Topa Topa brewing companies (both World Beer Cup winners) along with Bright Spark , Poseidon, and Seaward breweries.
If cabernet is more your style, never fear, as there are a handful of winemakers keeping the brewers company.
Native Bloom specializes in smallbatch, low-intervention wines. Lester Family Cellars and Trois le Fou are located in the same building. Ventura Wine Co. and The Cave offer hundreds of bottles of premier

Home to unassuming warehouses on the edge of town, the Industrial neighborhood has long been overlooked by visitors and more than a few residents. But that’s about to change if Linzy Mahoney, owner of Bright Spark Brewing and the driving force behind the Maker’s District, has something to say about it.
The newly minted Maker’s District was created to encourage people to explore this part of town in a new way: through their taste buds. After area businesses realized the common thread in their business plans (everyone was busy making things people love to consume), the name was born.
It currently consists of 13 members: two coffee roasters, five breweries, two cideries, three wineries, and a cannabis dispensary. Mahoney hopes people will explore, as it’s a great opportunity to not only try something new but also meet the people behind the products, hear their stories, and appreciate firsthand the passion that drives them to make.

Anthony Bourdain believed that “food, culture, people, and landscape are absolutely inseparable.” By that logic, restaurants are the ideal conduit to connect visitors with a destination and the people who breathe life into it.
Although the Ventura dining scene is constantly evolving, there are a handful of restaurants that have been diligently clocking in as culinary ambassadors and pleasing palates for generations.
1950s
TONY’S PIZZARIA
Bruce Barrios, who took over the pint-size pizza joint (700 square feet!) his late dad Tony started in 1959, loves a full circle moment.
“This couple, they’re around 80, had their first date here. Now, one of their grandchildren is my shift manager,” he says. “We’re like a community time capsule that you can eat.” It will probably taste the same as the last time you stopped in, whether it was 20 years ago or yesterday.
1960s
JOHNNY’S FINE MEXICAN FOOD
The late Johnny Lopez started his taqueria, best known for crunchy shells and shredded beef, in 1947 in Santa Paula. He moved to The Avenue in 1963. Lopez worked at the eatery daily until just before he passed at 83 in 1994. Luckily, his daughter kept his dream alive.

As a kid, Juan Jimenez ate tamales and corn burritos at the restaurant Leonor Corrales opened in 1974. He never would have guessed he would grow up to co-own the place. Corrales retired in 2022, but her recipes are still being served alongside new hits, like chilaquiles, at three locations.
“We felt very honored that she trusted us with something that means so much to her and has been a Ventura staple for more than 50 years,” Jimenez says. “I think the biggest reason we’re still going is that we’ve stayed true to what made the restaurant special from the beginning—simple, authentic Mexican food with a touch of New Mexico green and red.”

Lynn Mikelatos and her husband have watched a lot of businesses come and go during their taverna’s 32-year stint at the harbor. The reason they’ve lasted when others haven’t? “We’re pleased to be known as the dancing restaurant to children who request [us] for their birthdays,” she says, adding that “being important to so many customers has been our honor.”
“We’ve always run the business the way we want to, doing all the stuff that is important to us and serving what we would want to eat and drink,” Thayer says. “Apparently there are people who want what we want out of a restaurant because they keep showing up.”

Running a successful restaurant, especially one housed in a former Taco Bell, might be as challenging as summiting Everest, but Himalaya Fresh owner Yash Narang thinks the sea buckthorn juice is a must-try. Narang and his wife purchased the saag paneer spot from its founder in 2023.

What started out as a popular weekly popup in Santa Barbara by chef Ramón Velázquez morphed quickly into brick-and-mortar Corazón Cocina in 2016. Velázquez recently brought the concept to Downtown, and it draws crowds for its ceviche, street-style tacos, and agua frescas. Growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico, Velázquez learned how to cook traditional Mexican dishes from his mother and grandmother. Examples of dishes that keep guests coming back include the norteño taco with grilled skirt steak, al pastor, mole con pollo, and seafood plates.

Located on the promenade just steps from the Ventura Pier, Aloha Steakhouse, a classic Ventura steak house with a Hawaiian spin and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, has been a dining staple since 2003.
It’s owned by Jim Avrea, an affable man who has devoted five decades to the restaurant business.
“I started as a busboy at the Redondo Chart House in 1975 when I was 15,” Avrea recalls. Since coming to Ventura in the early ’80s, Avrea has worked at an array of community favorite spots, including the Ventura Chart House. Interestingly, Aloha Steakhouse is built entirely from
recycled materials from the Chart House, down to the front doors.
As for Aloha’s longevity, the “secret sauce” for Avrea boils down to consistency in food quality and customer service.
“We scratch cook everything. We also treat our employees like family, and hope they do the same with their guests.”
Some best-selling items he wouldn’t dare take off the menu include macadamiacrusted halibut, seared ahi tuna, clam chowder, and tableside bananas Foster.
“In 23 years, we still have 95% of the same items on the menu.”
When the boss pops in for a rare sit-down dinner, he also has a clear favorite.
“It’s always the tableside filet mignon flambéed with Grand Marnier. Daily, I eat [a mix of] blackened salmon, Aloha burgers, French dip, or our Lahaina chicken salad.”
Most days you’ll find Avrea at the restaurant making sure everything is running smoothly, but he maintains sanity through a fun hobby.
“I try to have lots of board meetings,” he jokes. “We have some of the best surf right in front of Aloha.”
When he’s not at work or catching a wave, he’s hanging out with his seven grandkids or chowing down on other great local food.

In an outdoor space at Vita Art Center, Chumash tribal members work over a tomol, shaping the wooden boat by hand. It’s exactly the kind of project that has defined the art center since it opened in 2008. Once a single gallery, it now houses three, along with multiple studios, workshop spaces, a maker space, and areas for community gatherings.
“The site where [it’s] being built was once Chumash land,” says Mary Perez, founder and president of Vita Art Center. “That’s an important full-circle moment, and a reminder that art culture is deeply ancestral and very much alive.” She notes that combining these ancient traditions with contemporary art represents the state of the arts in Ventura today.
“The scope of what we’re offering blows people away,” says Perez, sharing that Vita has featured the work of both local creatives and internationally renowned artists such as David Hockney. As a community-driven organization, the nonprofit provides not only galleries and studios but workshops for all ages.

Ventura is easily accessible by several nearby airports, including Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), both 70 miles away. The trip from Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) is scenic, as sections of the 30-mile drive on iconic Route 101 are sandwiched between mountains and shimmering coastline. Although slightly farther afield at 117 miles away, SLO County Airport (SBP) is also a great entry point.
RAIL
Kick back and watch the world go by as you employ an ecofavorite way to travel aboard the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner
This route stretches from San Luis Obispo to San Diego and welcomes dogs (check the weight limit), skateboards, surfboards, and bikes. The Downtown Ventura stop is a block from the beach, plus excellent dining and accommodations are within walking distance of the station.
CAR
Driving along the Pacific Coast Highway, the aptly named route that hugs the rugged sealine, is downright cinematic. Whether Ventura is the final destination or one of the stops on a longer road trip, go full California and rent a convertible. Alternatively, the aforementioned airports are serviced by Ventura County Airporter Shuttle and Smart Shuttle

Short legs, long body, zero fear—that describes Rowdy, the skateboarding miniature dachshund frequently seen around Ventura with her humans Kim Estrada and Ivan Cano. Rowdy’s love for Ventura began with the 2024 X Games, where she entertained crowds with skateboarding demonstrations and took home the Top Dawg trophy.
“Participating in the X Games allowed us to explore someplace new,” Estrada says. “Everyone in Ventura was welcoming to us as dog owners, which isn’t the case everywhere.” Rowdy, Estrada, and Cano return to Ventura regularly, frequenting many of its pet-friendly restaurants, shops, and attractions. Here’s why they—and other dog-loving visitors—keep coming back.
Rowdy can sometimes be seen frolicking in the sand at her favorite beach, Surfer’s Knoll. While not all beaches are dog-friendly due to bird habitats, others welcome dogs on a leash, including Marina Park , Harbor Cove Beach, and the Ventura Pier. Your pup can also accompany you while shopping along Main Street and at Ventura Harbor Village, where many stores offer free treats and water bowls.
There are plenty of dog parks to explore, including Camino Real Park , with its large fenced-in pup area. Ventura Boat Rentals allows owners to take dogs out on boats, kayaks, and paddleboards for a day on the water. For family-friendly events, check out the Short Dawgs in Da House dog racing festival in April, the HOWL-O-WEEN dog costume contest in October, and the Pooch Parade, which supports canine adoption and rescues, in August.

Dogs are welcome at Ventura’s breweries, tasting rooms, scoop shops, and other sunny hangouts that keep tails wagging.
Order a Pupcream at Coastal Cone (Rowdy prefers the classic vanilla). The big patio at Tony’s Pizzaria is the place to go if your pooch digs live music and sunshine. The Parlor, Boatyard Pub, and Paradise Pantry feature doggie menus that include items like salmonskin treats and other pooch-approved dishes. For wine and beer, Rowdy, Estrada, and Cano occasionally hit up Deep Sea Wine Tasting Room or Fluid State Beer Garden. There are many other dogfriendly breweries, such as Transmission Brewing, Topa Topa Brewing Company, MadeWest Brewing Company, and Ventura Coast Brewing Company, which all have outdoor patios.
