Welcome!

With its urban sophistication, artisan vibe, and deep agricultural roots, Petaluma is ripe for exploring.

CHARTERED

IN 1858, Petaluma is one of the oldest cities in California. During the Gold Rush, the Petaluma River carried produce, poultry, and dairy products to the growing populations of San Francisco and Oakland. Today, Petaluma’s riverfront location is home to award-winning restaurants, stylish boutiques, and locally owned shops (p. 22).

When you stroll downtown’s streets, you’ll discover restored Victorians, brick-walled alleys, iron-front buildings, and other landmarks that have earned Petaluma a place on the National Register of Historic Places.

As a regional and national leader in climate action, Petaluma is actively working toward a sustainable future (p. 13). Experience these efforts firsthand by enjoying the city’s parks,

river activities, and scenic biking and hiking trails (p. 36).

Petaluma’s fertile land and its bounty of ingredients make farm-to-table dining integral to the culinary landscape (p. 44). A Petaluma Gap wine or handcrafted libation is the perfect complement to your meal. Want to savor directly from the source? Local producers host unforgettable farm experiences, ranch tours, and tastings (p. 39).

Throughout this magazine, you’ll find insider tips, can’t-miss events (p. 9), comfortable accommodations (p. 15), cultural attractions (p. 70), and more to help you make the most of your time here. If you need further direction, stop by the Visitors Center. Happy exploring! –The Visit Petaluma Team

Adobe Road Winery

Founded by championship race car driver Kevin Buckler, Adobe Road Winery was built on a winning philosophy, a passion for exceptional wine, and a legacy that includes more than 100 professional racing victories, a win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and four wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona. The small-lot, handcrafted wines made with grapes from family-owned vineyards throughout Sonoma County and Napa Valley have earned more than 100 ratings of 90-plus points by top wine critics.

Adobe Road Winery is bringing something entirely new to downtown Petaluma.

One C Street is a 16,000-squarefoot, three-story riverfront winery and entertainment complex unlike anything else in Sonoma County wine country.

This groundbreaking destination features 160 feet of river frontage, a motorsports museum, eight distinct event spaces, and Pizza World, centered around a custombuilt 7,000-pound Italian pizza oven.

Crowning the experience is a spectacular rooftop terrace with sweeping river views, designed for unforgettable weddings, corporate events, celebrations, and sunset evenings.

Centrally located in downtown Petaluma and easily accessible from the SMART train, Adobe Road Winery invites you to come and enjoy tastings, wines by the glass or bottle, and weekly live music. The winery is open daily, and walk-ins and same-day reservations are welcome!

Petaluma’s Pioneering Spirit

Sinceits earliest inhabitants, Petaluma has been shaped by those who understood the land and its potential. That ethos carried forward as settlers, immigrants, and entrepreneurs transformed a quiet riverfront into a thriving hub of farming, industry, and commerce.

Today, the spirit of ingenuity lives on in the people cultivating the land, building businesses, and advancing sustainable solutions. Here’s a look at the innovators of the past, present, and future.

Building the City

Immigrants contributed to Petaluma’s growth and identity through their labor, culture, and resilience. Many were drawn to the area during the Gold Rush, seeking economic and social opportunities.

Founded in 1858, the town became a bustling destination as the Petaluma River transported local produce, poultry, and dairy to booming Bay Area markets. Chinese immigrants were vital to this early economy. They worked as farmhands, brickmakers, and railroad laborers, building critical infrastructure despite facing discrimination. Today, their contributions are commemorated at Historic Chinatown Park

European newcomers (including Swiss-Italian, Irish, and German families) also played a part in the city’s development by establishing farms and businesses. Latino families brought valuable agricultural knowledge and entrepreneurial spirit, helping to transform the town into a hub for food production.

Additionally, Black residents shaped the city’s civic life, creating spaces for community amid the challenges of segregation.

A historical look at Petaluma’s Main Street

Honoring Henry

From the 1930s through the 1960s, Henry Chenault greatly influenced Petaluma’s civic life. An Army veteran and founding member of the Sonoma County NAACP, he was heavily involved in local politics and advocacy. For years, he was the city’s only Black businessman, earning a reputation as a thoughtful “sidewalk philosopher” at his popular shoeshine stand. His legacy is honored on Chenault Way, the former alley at Western Avenue and Petaluma Boulevard, near the site where he once worked.

BUTTER & EGG DAYS

Each April, celebrate innovation and community at the Butter & Egg Days Parade & Festival. Admire the colorful floats, enjoy food and live music, play games, and delight in costumed toddlers at the Cutest Little Chick contest.

The First Stewards

The Coast Miwok were integral in shaping the values of stewardship that define Petaluma today. They even gave the region its name—pe’ta lu’ma, meaning “sloping ridge”—based on its distinctive geographical feature.

These Indigenous peoples lived in harmony with the area’s rolling hills, woodlands, and waterways.

The Petaluma River was central to daily life and served as an important trade route connecting the Coast Miwok to neighboring tribes. Their intimate understanding of the landscape guided how they gathered food, managed natural resources, and sustained their communities.

Stepping Up Sustainability

PETALUMA CONTINUES ITS PIONEERING TRADITION by leading in sustainability. The city has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, adopting new standards for sustainable development, and renewing its focus on alternative transportation.

Forward-thinking residents are also joining forces to make the city more planet-friendly.

Cool Petaluma is a grassroots initiative that focuses on fostering community-driven climate solutions through events designed to raise awareness and inspire action. Blue Zones Project Petaluma promotes

well-being through free fitness classes, cooking demonstrations, workshops, and initiatives that expand access to healthy food and foster community connection. At the Petaluma Reuse Hub, hands-on workshops and Repair Fairs encourage residents to rethink waste and give everyday items a second life.

Beyond the city, Petaluma’s farms are leading the way in regenerative agriculture, embracing practices that restore soil health and support biodiversity. Many also give visitors opportunities to connect with the land through farm tours and special events (p. 39).

Learn more about the region’s Indigenous history and agricultural roots at this former Carnegie library.

Egg-cellent INNOVATIONS

After the Gold Rush, Petaluma transformed into a poultry powerhouse. In 1868, Danish immigrant Christopher Nisson established the nation’s first commercial hatchery, and in 1879, residents Lyman Byce and Isaac Dias invented the first practical egg incubator. This ignited an “egg-onomic boom,” as hundreds of chicken farms cropped up across the region and demand for eggs soared. By 1918, Petaluma had become one of the richest towns in America and earned the title of “The Egg Basket of the World.”

Petaluma’s notable architecture is primarily attributable to Brainerd Jones, who designed many of its buildings. Get a map of must-see sites at visitpetaluma.com.

Petaluma’s agricultural story continues in the vineyards shaped by the region’s signature climate. As cool Pacific breezes blow through a break in the coastal mountains (known as the Petaluma Gap) they create ideal conditions for slow-ripening, thick-skinned grapes. The result is dynamic pinot noir, chardonnay, and syrah.

Want to experience the wine region firsthand? Take a short drive from town to enjoy sweeping vineyard views and excellent wines at Keller Estate or small-lot releases at Karah Estate Vineyard. For a more intimate tasting, visit Sangiacomo Family Wines or Deodora Estate Vineyards, where personalized pours showcase the unique character of the terroir.

You can also savor Petaluma Gap AVA wines without leaving downtown. Brooks Note Winery offers carefully curated flights of elegant, small-production wines, while the family- and pet-friendly Adobe Road Winery serves award-winning blends in a lively space. From familiar favorites like basil and garlic to unexpected varieties like blood orange and chai, the olive oils produced at McEvoy Ranch cater to every palate.

THE EGG BASKET ERA

Discover how a wave of innovation turned Petaluma into an eggproducing powerhouse.

Petaluma’s egg boom began in 1879, when local inventors unveiled a practical incubator that transformed the industry. By allowing eggs to hatch without chickens, the technology kept hens in near-constant production and increased their average output to 200 eggs a year.

By 1908, roughly 75% of Sonoma County residents were raising poultry. Petaluma remained dedicated to all things chicken, naming a baseball team after the Single Comb White Leghorn and opening a chicken pharmacy that specialized in poultry health. In 1918, Petaluma organized an event that set the stage for today’s Butter & Egg Days Parade & Festival.

WALK THE LAND

Petaluma producers warmly welcome visitors with immersive farm experiences. From tasting tours and flower walks to harvest activities and playful animal encounters, there are countless ways to see agriculture in action.

can picnic among the flowers and fountains before cutting roses to take home.

A short drive away lies Lavender Bee Farm, where English, Provence, and Grosso varieties grow on three lush acres. (Meet the farmers on page 42.)

Groups of 10 or more can schedule a tour to wander through the lavender fields and see the productive hives. The lucky bees living here make lavender blossom honey that sells out every year. You’ll find essential oils and beeswax bars in the on-site shop, too.

Also just minutes from Petaluma, McEvoy Ranch is a 550-acre oasis dotted with Tuscan olive trees, vineyards, and postcard-pretty ponds. The family-owned estate produces award-winning organic extra virgin olive oil, candles, skin care products, and more. Reserve a spot on the walking tour for a 90-minute introduction to its history, sustainability practices, and production process, then return to the tasting room for samples.

Out in Chileno Valley, Windrush Farm features unique hands-on experiences. Founded by Mimi Luebbermann as a place to raise sheep, write, and live in harmony with the land, the farm now offers ranch visits and fiber arts workshops by reservation. Meet sheep, rabbits, and llamas on the Family Farm Tour, which ends with a stroll by the pond teeming with tadpoles. Spinning and fleece-making classes at the Windrush Fiber Art School also include time with the animals.

MEET THE FARMERS

QWhat farm experiences do you offer?

RICHARD: Groups can have a picnic and walk through the fields to take pictures. People can also come to learn about bees and how we grow lavender.

Q When does the lavender reach peak bloom?

RICHARD: Normally in June and July, and sometimes into mid-August. We have fruit trees and flowering bushes, so the bees can sustain themselves when the lavender is not in bloom.

Q

What products do you sell?

RICHARD: We sell lavender in fresh bunches when it’s in bloom. We distill it and make essential oil. We dry it and remove the buds from the stems to use in sachets. We infuse buds with salts; since the lavender is grown without any chemicals, it’s considered culinary-grade. We also make moisturizing bars with beeswax. And we have our lavender honey, which is very popular.

Q

What are some of your favorite places in Petaluma?

JOANN: Stellina Pronto for coffee, Della Fattoria for its beauty and deliciousness, and Volpi’s Ristorante & Bar—my family goes way back with them.

CHEF-OWNERS

chef select Stéphane Saint Louis | Table Culture Provisions and Bijou

Chef Stéphane Saint Louis blends French culinary tradition with Sonoma County ingredients at his highly acclaimed restaurants.

Stéphane Saint Louis and Steven Vargas first made their mark with Table Culture Provisions, a contemporary French fine-dining destination that evolved from a scrappy mobile

kitchen into a Michelin Guide-recognized (and, arguably, star-worthy) restaurant.

The duo’s meticulous five- to sevencourse tasting menu features exquisite delicacies like the Around the Sea trio: a buttery Japanese red sea bream tartlet adorned with glistening roe and edible flowers, a golden-hued prawn choron bisque, and a free-form fennel crisp drizzled with creamy aioli and laced with flowers.

In May 2025, they expanded with Bijou,

meaning “jewel” in French. The restaurant reflects Saint Louis’s “bistronomy” approach—applying French cooking techniques and culinary traditions to Sonoma County farm-to-table ingredients.

Bijou beckons with candlelit tables, sleek decor, and a relaxed vibe. The lunch, brunch, and dinner menus are laid-back but thoughtful: Crispy onion rings are centered with delicata squash; yakitori-style Cornish game hen is paired with perfectly crisp frites, green salad, baby carrots, fresh herbs, and chicken jus.

“What makes the area so compelling is that it hasn’t lost its sense of authenticity while evolving,” says Saint Louis, who lives in Petaluma. “There’s a growing energy around food, wine, and hospitality that’s drawing people in from outside the region.”

Nick Ronan | Brigitte Bistro

Chef Nick Ronan transformed a personal loss into a new beginning through classic French cuisine.

NICK RONAN’S CULINARY PATH started quite glamorously. He trained under top chefs in London, Paris, and San Francisco before opening ChouChou French Bistro in the city’s Forest Hill neighborhood in 2006. He introduced several other restaurants over the years, and in 2024, debuted Brigitte Bistro, bringing refined French bistro cooking with a wine country sensibility to Petaluma.

The menu combines traditional French dishes with locally sourced ingredients. Highlights include a vegetable tart, beef bourguignon, and the signature platter: decadent Liberty Duck leg confit accompanied by a tower of duck fat potato mille-feuille, maitake and Alba mushrooms, and truffle sauce.

Born in France and known for his gregarious personality (expect a European greeting with kisses on both cheeks), Ronan has built a bright culinary career. But it hasn’t always been easy for him. He acknowledges that the demanding nature of being a restaurateur eventually led to exhaustion and burnout, forcing him to step away from the industry for a time. In 2023, he lost his mother, Brigitte, but surprisingly, that’s what pushed him back into the light.

He says, “When I moved to Petaluma, I saw something that I feared did not exist any longer: strong community, family-oriented, caring for one another, eating with joy, and creating memories. Being very fragile still, I felt hope and joy.”

Those characteristics shine through in Brigitte. A meal here invites you to be a friend and delight in classic dishes, including the steak tartare prepared tableside and the île flottante (“floating island”) dessert— pillowy meringue bathed in crème anglaise. His restaurant slogan and motto says it all: “Love, Food, Wine, Passion, Life, and People.”

PETALUMA HAS REALLY GROWN OVER THE LAST 15 YEARS, BUT WE STILL HAVE SUCH A SOULFUL TOWN.

The Art of Adornment

Jewelry designer Robindira Unsworth handcrafts pieces that weave together global inspiration, rich textures, and personal stories.

ROBINDIRA UNSWORTH

designs

handcrafted jewelry sold in her Petaluma shop as well as at high-end retailers and specialty boutiques around the world.

Don’t try to pigeonhole her work, though. She flows with whatever mood strikes her, dreaming up elegant pieces like her Australian opal pendulum necklace, which resembles a tiger tooth enrobed in 14k gold vermeil and studded with Australian opal and white topaz.

“I fell in love with jewelry because everyone has a story about what they wear, whether it marks an occasion or a gift from someone special in their life,” Unsworth says.

She’s been a designer for more than 25 years, showcasing her work in major cities like New York and Los Angeles. She moved to Petaluma two decades ago, drawn by its unique character. “Petaluma has really grown over the last 15 years, but we still have such a soulful town,” she says. “I’ve been lucky to be a part of that.”

As she travels the world for shows and inspiration, Unsworth meets fellow designers and brings their apparel back to Petaluma to highlight alongside her jewelry. She’s particularly proud of her Italian partnerships, which include items like the Campomaggi Siena wallet, crafted from black cowhide leather and embellished with bronze, gold, and silver studs.

“Our jewelry is really about layering your life and creating your own beautiful story,” Unsworth says.

A WINEMAKER’S Wild Ride

At Montagne Russe Winery, a former roller coaster designer pours Petaluma Gap wines in a music-filled tasting room.

Grown in the Gap

Most of Bersofsky’s pinot noir, chardonnay, and syrah grapes come from the Petaluma Gap AVA, including coveted sites like Spring Hill Ranch, Terra de Promissio, and Gap’s Crown. He credits these partnerships to “good people, a bit of chutzpah, and a lot of luck.”

AVA 101:

THE PETALUMA GAP

Defined by distinctive weather patterns, this viticultural area produces well-balanced, award-winning wines.

OWNER-WINEMAKER

KEVIN BERSOFSKY (pictured below) has a novel backstory for his boutique winery. Beginning his journey in his small garage in 2006, “I had quite the roller-coaster ride from producing my first full barrel of syrah in 2008 to evolving into an official winery in 2015,” he recalls.

It’s an apt metaphor. He designed roller coasters as an engineering student years ago. So, when it came time to name his new enterprise, he looked at the corkscrews and inversions involved in his daily work, and Montagne Russe seemed like the obvious choice.

He’ll happily share the history behind the name with guests: The world’s oldest roller coasters originated in 17th-century Russia as ice-covered wooden structures shaped like hills; these were later adopted by the French, who called them montagnes russes, meaning “Russian mountains.”

Last July, Bersofsky moved his Healdsburg tasting room to Petaluma, a move long in the making.

More than 4,000 vineyard acres thrive on the fertile grounds of the Petaluma Gap AVA. Many varieties flourish in the cool climate, but the area is best known for its premium pinot noir, chardonnay, and syrah cultivated on sustainably farmed land.

Key to the region’s identity is the 15-milewide gap in the coastal mountain range, which imparts a unique character to the area’s wines. While sunshine is generally plentiful, steady winds and fog flow in from the Sonoma Coast and San Pablo Bay, creating a dynamic climate that allows grapes to develop slowly. The result is a harmonious balance of ripeness and restraint, featuring layered flavors and vibrant acidity.

“The plan was always Petaluma,” says the San Rafael resident, noting that he was originally eyeing the Watershed in the city’s Historic Warehouse District before the pandemic hit.

“I wanted to be closer to home,” he says. “The Black Knight tasting room was available, and the rest, as they say ...”

Montagne Russe showcases another passion: vinyl records. There are more than 4,000 available to listen to on the turntable, and most are also for sale.

“Let’s just say that all my lunch money from the past five years has gone into records,” Bersofsky quips.

When you visit, feel free to bring in your pup (don’t miss the darling “doggie kissing booth”) and food from local restaurants.

Winemaking in this region dates back to the 1830s, when General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, the military governor of Mexican California, planted vines at the Petaluma Adobe, which served as the Rancho Petaluma headquarters and is now Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park. Yet the area wasn’t officially designated as a standalone appellation until 2017. Local grape growers and winemakers advocated for recognition of the unique terroir that produces exceptionally elegant, full-bodied wines.

In addition to pinot noir, chardonnay, and syrah, be sure to include albariño, riesling, viognier, grenache, merlot, cabernet franc, and cabernet sauvignon on your must-sip list.

The Trailblazer

Lagunitas Brewing Company

Founded in 1993 by Tony Magee with a five-gallon homebrew kit, this pioneering brewery helped ignite California’s craft beer boom. Petaluma is home to the flagship taproom of this nationally renowned brand, which continues to draw crowds with its hop-forward brews and unique session beers, including a non-alcoholic cannabis-infused sparkling beverage. Credited with popularizing the IPA style in the Bay Area, the brewery still pours the trailblazing beers that defined a movement.

The Innovator

HenHouse Brewing Co.

The brewery’s Petaluma Palace of Barrels is named in honor of cofounders Collin McDonnell, Shane Goepel, and Scott Goyne, who started the brewery in 2013 with just 88 barrels and now boast around 20,000. Beer aficionados pack the cozy taproom for pours of strong, highly creative barrel-aged beers with quirky names. Take the Animal Friends 2, an IPA infused with jasmine rice, bitter Chinook hops, and anchovy hops.

The Experimentalist

Crooked Goat Brewing

In 2016, six intrepid friends came together to craft fledgling brews in a small office behind Pete’s Henny Penny restaurant in Petaluma. They eventually opened a successful brewery in Sebastopol, and in 2022, they returned with a new taproom just west of downtown Petaluma. Crooked Goat Brewing offers a diverse selection of small-batch concoctions, such as the Silver Lining Stout infused with Madagascar vanilla beans.

Small-Batch, BIG FLAVOR

At Adobe Creek Brewing, experimentation and ever-changing taps keep Petaluma’s craft beer scene fresh.

If bold hops and aromatic pours are your thing, you’ll love Adobe Creek Brewing. Founder and head brewer Jonathan MacDonald (pictured above) swings for the fences with his bold beer profiles, producing small-batch ales so limited in availability that there isn't an online menu. You need to visit the taproom to see what’s, well, on tap.

MacDonald and his business partner, Tim Hemmelgarn, balance hop-forward creations with clean, crisp lagers (pilsners, especially). They also can’t help but experiment with nearly any good ingredients that can be fermented.

MacDonald jokes that he became smitten with craft suds by happenstance when a friend gifted him a homebrewing kit in 2012. His parents let him set up a “mad scientist lab” in their garage, sparking what became a full-fledged passion.

Brewing takes place at the original facility in Novato, while the taproom in Petaluma’s Theatre Square showcases the resulting art. Expect an oft-changing lineup, from hazy IPAs like Terp Sauce Galaxy and Owl Capone to playful pours such as the Double Fruit Tart sour or seasonal Pumpkin Pie ale.

“We source hops from Crosby Farms in Oregon as well as other growers in the Pacific Northwest, New Zealand, and Australia,” MacDonald says. “We have used some locally grown malt from Admiral Maltings in the past, and have tried to get our hands on some of their Petaluma-grown malt.”

Local makers connect Petaluma’s agricultural roots to wearable design.

FARM TO FABRIC WINDRUSH FARM

Nic Wiessler is a connoisseur of rugged American denim, a pants perfectionist, if you will. He points out that blue jeans were invented in San Francisco, so why not offer them in an authentic, durable style right here in Petaluma? After two years of testing, he created a collection grounded in quality, comfort, and timeless design.

WiesMade crafts premium raw selvedge and broken twill denim using materials that are farmed, milled, and sewn entirely in the U.S. There’s no fast fashion here: The varied jackets, jeans, vests, shorts, and blazers are designed to be worn for years, not seasons.

Nestled in the Chileno Valley west of Petaluma, this working farm lives up to its motto: “more than just a sheep farm.” Founded in 1995 by Mimi Luebbermann, the property grew from her vision of a simple lifestyle, focused on harvesting natural fibers and providing a serene space for her writing career.

Today, the ranch produces high-quality wool yarns and serves as a hub for fiber arts. Visitors can take spinning classes, attend workshops on everything from homesteading to animal husbandry, or tour the grounds to see sheep, goats, alpacas, Angora rabbits, llamas, and chickens.

Gathering Thyme

Situated in a historic bungalow just south of downtown Petaluma, Gathering Thyme offers the health-conscious community carefully curated organic herbs, tea blends, nutritional supplements, body care, and aromatherapy products. Home sweet Home

Thinking about relocating to Petaluma? Here are four reasons to make the move.

LOCATION

If you draw a circle on a map of Northern California, Petaluma is right in the center, providing the best of all worlds. The city sits at the southern edge of Sonoma County wine country and is conveniently close to San Francisco’s big-city energy and attractions.

ACCESS TO NATURE

When you need to get outside, there are plenty of adventures to choose from. The windswept coastline of Bodega Bay is merely 30 minutes to the west, while majestic redwood forests stretch to the north and south.

THE PERFECT SIZE

With a population of just under 60,000, Petaluma strikes an ideal balance: large enough to offer a vibrant dining scene, local shops, and cultural experiences, but small enough to feel connected.

COMMUNITY FIRST

If you ask a local what they love about living in Petaluma, you’ll likely hear about the city’s generous spirit and strong sense of community: the way neighbors show up for one another, the pride in local businesses, and the feeling of belonging.
