CHANDON’S founder, Robert-Jean de Vogüé, took sparkling wine from its homeland in France to the rest of the world, sharing the know-how of exceptional sparkling wines in unexpected places. California became one such place in 1973, and today the pioneering spirit lives on.

With vineyards in Los Carneros, Mt. Veeder, and the home estate in Yountville, CHANDON creates wines from treasured terroirs harvested under the stars—for freshness, terroir is always the starting point, and expressing its quality is the inspiration. At CHANDON, technique follows style, and it follows the winemaker’s vision—fruit-driven and elegant yet easy going. Get to Know Napa Valley

Wondering when to visit or what to sip? Let this be your guide to the Napa Valley basics.

A Reason for Any Season

With four distinct yet temperate seasons, there’s never a bad time to visit Napa Valley.

SPRING

March–May

During spring in Napa Valley, the vineyards come alive with vibrant green foliage. The weather is mild, with occasional rain showers, making it an ideal time to witness bud break—the first florets on the vines.

SUMMER

June–August

Summer days in Napa Valley are long, warm, and sunny, perfect for outdoor activities and wine tasting. Summer evening temperatures cool down a bit, making it a popular time for alfresco dining and outdoor concerts.

FALL

September–November

Also known as harvest season, fall is a magical and exciting time in Napa Valley. The weather is pleasant, and visitors and residents alike take part in the numerous wine parties and events celebrating harvest.

WINTER

December–February

Typically, there are fewer visitors this time of year, which means you’re likely to have an even more personalized experience. Enjoy mild winter temperatures and the occasional rainfall, which helps replenish the vineyards.

Mustard Season

If you’re visiting between January and March, you’ll be delighted to discover a hidden gem in Napa Valley—the wild mustard bloom.

During this time of year, a sunny yellow blanket of mustard flowers covers the region and ushers in the new growing season, turning the already picturesque background into something otherworldly. Mustard is planted as a cover crop to both protect the soil and replenish it with nutrients. Plus, it’s simply beautiful! Fondly referred to as “the season between seasons,” Mustard Season hits its peak mid-February and makes for spectacular photo ops. Use this Mustard Season map to locate the best spots to see these colorful blooms. For that picture-perfect background, pull safely off the road, avoid private property, and be mindful of the grapevines. (They’re still sleeping!)

Valley Pioneers

These trailblazers transformed Napa Valley into one of the world’s most celebrated wine regions.

GEORGE C. YOUNT Often referred to as the first permanent Euro-American settler in Napa Valley, Yount arrived in 1831 and planted the area’s first grapevines.

JACOB SCHRAM In 1862, Schram purchased property on Diamond Mountain. Some 30 years later, that property, now known as Schramsberg Vineyards had 100 acres of vines and the valley’s first hillside caves.

CHARLES KRUG

In 1882, Krug opened the first public tasting room in Napa Valley. Today, the 540-acre Charles Krug Winery is still in operation, maintaining Krug’s legacy in sharing quality wines with all.

WARREN WINIARSKI

Winiarski’s 1973 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon won the Paris competition, drawing attention to Napa Valley.

1st female winemaker

HANNAH WEINBERGER

In the early 1880s, Weinberger became Napa Valley’s first female winery owner and winemaker. She ran her winery up until Prohibition.

LOUIS M. MARTINI

This visionary winemaker established his eponymous winery in 1933, crafting acclaimed wines with unwavering dedication to quality and innovation.

A pioneer who elevated Napa Valley’s reputation worldwide, Mondavi founded his winery in 1966, advocating for quality winemaking and promoting Napa Valley as a premier wine

BOB TRINCHERO

Trinchero created the world’s first White Zinfandel in 1972. Although it was a happy accident, the resulting wine changed the course of wine consumption in America.

GUSTAVE NEIBAUM

Niebaum laid the groundwork for Napa Valley’s reputation as a premium wine region. His innovations, like bottling lines and grapesorting tables, are industry standard today.

Meet the King and Queen of Napa Valley

While the Valley is home to an abundance of grape varieties, there are two undisputed rulers of the land.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Comprising 51% of total vineyard acres planted, Cabernet Sauvignon rules Napa Valley. Big on flavor and tannins, Cabernet Sauvignon hails from Bordeaux, France, and was one of the first varieties planted here in the late 1800s. While expressions vary, Cabernet Sauvignon is fantastic young but ages beautifully in the cellar.

DECANT TIME: 1-2 hours

SERVING TEMP: 60-68°F

CELLAR LIFE: 10-20+ years

Chardonnay

As the second most planted grape variety in Napa Valley, Chardonnay thrives in cooler climes where it ripens slowly. The Burgundian variety was planted here in the late 1940s and ranges in style from fresh and crisp to round and buttery.

Napa Valley Essentials

Everyone has their own style, but there are a few things you should always have in your bag. Forgot something? Pick it up while shopping here.

Jacket

Temperatures vary from day to evening, even in the summer. This diurnal shift is part of the magic that yields incredible grape harvests in Napa Valley, so layers are key. Have a lightweight outer layer ready— something easy to throw on during the crisp mornings and the cool nights.

Sunglasses

No one likes squinting into the sun while admiring vineyard views. Be sure to have your favorite pair (or two) of shades.

Flat shoes

Opt for chic sneakers, flats, platforms, or wedges for ease of travel across uneven winery pathways and vineyards.

Bag

Bring a reusable bag, stylish purse, or chic satchel to carry all your extras— plus any picnic provisions, bottles of wine, or new finds from a shopping excursion.

Water bottle

Stay hydrated throughout wine tastings or on your hike with a reusable water bottle.

Stewards of the Land

Designated as America’s first agricultural preserve in 1968, Napa Valley continues to protect the region’s natural beauty and landscapes. Sustainability efforts and environmental stewardship initiatives are the cornerstone of the Napa Valley ethos, with wineries and businesses embracing eco-friendly practices like organic farming, solar energy, and water conservation. Here are some of the programs, businesses, and people making a positive impact now and for generations to come.

Napa Valley wineries and vineyards make sustainable choices to preserve and protect the region. Napa Valley is

We’re proud to be leaders proving sustainability and environmental stewardship are synonymous with success. We’re ready to expand the scope of Napa Green beyond the wine industry and hope to promote and facilitate broader sustainability certification for the entire hospitality sector, including hotels, restaurants, and events.”

Growing for Good

Everywhere you look, businesses are engaged in Napa Green certifications in an effort to preserve Napa Valley land.

You could say they’re becoming welcome regulars at wineries throughout Napa Valley. Strategically placed Napa Green Certified signs are one of the first things visitors notice when visiting a winery.

But what do the signs mean?

Did You Know?

As one of only four sustainable wine-growing programs in the United States, local nonprofit Napa Green offers soil-to-bottle certifications for wineries and vineyards. In addition to helping wineries engage in sustainable practices to keep Napa Valley beautiful for future generations, Napa Green certification is a wise business move—ultimately, implementing better practices and using fewer resources reduces costs and saves money.

Currently, there are 92 Napa Green Certified wineries. In less than a decade, the nonprofit has helped wineries save more than 27 million gallons of water, 14 million kilowatt hours of energy, and $4 million plus in energy costs. It’s a win-win for Mother Nature, vintners, and wine drinkers.

The ABCs of Sustainability

Three terms you should know.

Organic

An organic listing on a wine label means one of two things: It’s either made from organically grown grapes, without the use of added sulfites, or it’s made from certified-organic grapes and avoids all synthetic pesticides.

Biodynamic

Similar to organic wines, biodynamic wines avoid synthetic chemicals during winemaking. But biodynamic farming goes a step further and views the vineyard as an entire ecosystem to produce low-intervention wines made with minimal manipulation and additives.

LEED Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a green building rating system, is awarded to buildings that meet specific criteria for sustainable design, construction, and operation. Several Napa Valley wineries and hotels have LEED certifications.

The Future of Viticulture

Sustainability expert Michelle Novi offers a glimpse into the progress being made in Napa Valley.

From changing weather patterns to droughts and wildfires, climate change seems to be on most minds these days. So, what are the environmental implications for Napa Valley?

Michelle Novi oversees the sustainability efforts for Napa Valley Vintners, an industry advocacy group that has championed environmental stewardship in Napa Valley since 1944. She also serves on the board for Napa Green, the area’s leading sustainability certification program for vineyards and wineries. Despite the sometimes overwhelming outlook on climate change, organizations like Napa Valley Vintners and leaders like Novi are working to ensure that progress is made and positive changes are implemented to protect Napa Valley for future generations.

Q & A

Michelle Novi on Napa Valley’s sustainability efforts

Q: We’re feeling the effects of climate change around the globe. What is the outlook for viticulture in Napa Valley?

MN: I’m confident about our future. Napa Valley vintners and growers have been ahead of the curve with adopting practices that reduce water use, enhance soil health, and expand overall environmental and operational resilience while maintaining incredible wine and grape quality.

Q: How can we work toward sustainability of the land and address the most urgent issues?

MN: When it comes to land in Napa Valley, it’s all about the soil. Vintners are planting more trees, creating more compost, and using organic methods to keep soil healthy and rich with nutrients and to prevent erosion. These practices are good for our community, the climate, and our world-famous grapes.

Q: In what initiatives are Napa Valley Vintners involved?

MN: With the engagement from our 550 winery members, NVV leads and supports initiatives that promote, protect, and enhance Napa Valley. I’m incredibly proud of the work being done by Napa Green. NVV was one of the initial founders of Napa Green, and we continue to support its programming. We also invest heavily in our people and community through our charitable program, Collective Napa Valley, which has given more than $225 million to our community to ensure equitable access to health care and opportunity for youth advancement.

What’s a B Corp?

B Corp Certification measures a company’s entire social and environmental impact. To receive this certification, companies must demonstrate a concerted effort to maintain skyhigh standards in performance, accountability, and transparency.

For the Trees

Clif Family Winery is reducing its ecological footprint through organic food and farming, sustainable production, zero-waste practices, and restoring natural resources.

For the Planet

Plenty of wineries are doing good. Napa Green certified Covert Estate is a 1% for the Planet member, contributing at least one percent of annual revenue to green causes.

Leaders in Sustainable Winery Practices

These Napa Valley wineries are going above and beyond, proving that there is always something to be done to preserve this gift for generations to come.

SPOTTSWOODE ESTATE

In 1985, Spottswoode became the first winery in Napa Valley to organically farm its estate vineyard. In 2020, it was the first valley winery to become a Certified B Corporation. The family-owned winery proudly accomplished its latest green initiative, a Regenerative Organic Certification (ROC)— an agricultural certification in soil health and animal, worker, and farmer welfare.

CLIF FAMILY WINERY

To craft its small-batch wine and foods, Clif Family Winery organically cultivates 90 acres of estate vineyards and five acres of vegetable gardens, fruit orchards, and olive groves. Green business practices, like renewable energy and reusable, recyclable, or compostable packaging, helped it achieve B Corporation Certification in 2023.

TRES SABORES

For 25 years, Tres Sabores has been organically farming everything from wine grapes to olives to pomegranates. One visit to this stunning estate and the biodiversity is apparent. Along with sheep and Guinea fowl, hummingbirds, dragonflies, and songbirds dart about the rolling hills of this California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) and Napa Green Certified property.

Thank you for doing your part to keep Napa Valley beautiful. Be sure to follow these six easy tips to be a respectful visitor.

• ADMIRE FROM AFAR. Vineyards are a delicate ecosystem. Please refrain from walking through the vines unless you’re invited to do so during a winery tour.

• SHOP LOCAL. Learn more about how shopping and eating locally grown foods affects the Napa Valley community for the better (p. 126). Buy fresh produce from the area farmers’ markets (p. 174) and support regional growers.

• SKIP THE PLASTIC BAG. Avoid store-issued plastic bags and bring reusable bags with you for all your purchases. And if you left your reusable tote at home, there are plenty of shops around Napa

Valley that can offer a stylish, sustainable replacement.

• HIKE RESPONSIBLY. When you hike, please stay on marked trails. Just like vineyards, natural spaces have delicate ecosystems and it’s best to let wild areas stay wild.

• PARK IT. Save gas and bike or stroll our downtowns—Napa, Yountville, St. Helena, and Calistoga are particularly nice for a stroll. Turn to page 46 to find our best bets in each town.

Nature’s Workers

Meet the animal friends helping to keep Napa Valley green.

BAAA

Cliff Lede Vineyards, Tres Sabores, Stags’ Leap Winery, and several others have sheep and goats to naturally manage cover crops. Stimulation from the animal hooves also builds healthy microflora in the soil.

BZZZ

Bees are a sign of a healthy ecosystem.

Honig Vineyard and Winery, Carneros

Resort and Spa, Stanly Ranch, Long Meadow Ranch, and Fantesca Estate and Winery implement robust bee programs with gardens, cover crops, and clean water sources for hives.

HOOO

WOOSH

Barn owls are an eco-friendly option for rodenticide. There are some 300 owl nest boxes around Napa Valley to protect vines from critters.

• PACK IT IN AND PACK IT OUT. Don’t leave trash behind at parks, open spaces, or wineries.

Many vineyards use Authentic Abatement falconry as a natural way to eliminate invasive bird species and rodents, which in turn ensures maximum yield and quality harvest.

Biodiversity ... creates a more resilient and sustainable system for future generations.”

THE GOOD LIFE: Napa Valley has 33 different types of soil that affect grape character. Fertile soils on the valley floor result in large, plump grapes. Poetry of the Land

From the iconic valley floor to the heights of Howell Mountain, every Napa Valley AVA has a story to tell.

As California’s first designated American Viticultural Area (AVA), Napa Valley is a special place when it comes to grape growing and winemaking. This is due, in large part, to the 16 designated appellations—each with its own terroir, climate, and character that are etched into the very essence of the wine itself.

These designations are like a map of the wine’s soul, unveiling the secrets of a region’s winemaking artistry. The Los Carneros AVA, for instance, is renowned for its cool climate, creating Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs that dance on the palate with elegance and brightness. Howell Mountain AVA is nestled at elevations above 1,400 feet and produces bold wines. Here, grapes endure cooler temperatures and longer sun exposure, resulting in rich, luscious reds. The vines of Mount Veeder AVA challenge gravity, clinging to rocky soils and absorbing sunlight that adds complexity to Chardonnays and Bordeaux blends.

On the valley floor, you’ll find another collection of stories. In these AVAs, like Stags Leap District, Rutherford, and Oakville, the gentle slopes and fertile soils create wines that embody the essence of Napa Valley, with a perfect balance of fruit, acidity, and refinement.

With each Napa Valley AVA, a new chapter unfolds—a tale of passion, heritage, and the dance between earth and vine. Embrace the nuances and heart in every bottle, and let Napa Valley AVAs be your guide to a wine journey unlike any other.

Expert Advice

Meet a Master Sommelier and learn about his wine journey.

For Vincent Morrow, Beverage Director of Michelin-starred PRESS Restaurant, his foray into wine was not a run-ofthe-mill endeavor. A chance encounter at Thanksgiving with a red wine of unknown origin set him on a path that would change his life trajectory. He started out in a Bay Area tasting room, where he overheard someone talking about having taken the “nearly impossible” Master Sommelier exam— he was immediately intrigued. After his tasting room stint, he ventured into wine production before moving to a position at a wine bar and eventually a restaurant.

His thirst for knowledge resulted in his success over the Master Sommelier exam in 2019. And in 2022, he received the acclaimed Sommelier Award recognition from Michelin. Shortly thereafter, PRESS Restaurant received its first Michelin star.

The Rules of Tasting

Morrow shares his top tips for wine tasting in Napa Valley.

IT MAY NOT BE FOR YOU

“Just because a wine is expensive or smallproduction doesn’t mean you have to like it.”

“Bring a notebook, and when you like something, take notes. Write about the experience and the wines you had.”

DON’T DRINK IT ALL

“Make sure you’re spitting. Just be okay with it. I know that’s hard when you just get an ounce and the tasting is expensive, but there’s only so much your palate can handle.”

START FARTHER AWAY

“Start far away, as early as you can, and work closer back to home base, whether that’s the hotel or dinner for the night.”

Continue to ask questions, listen to the answers, and don’t block them out. Just because you have some knowledge or might be a collector, there is always something to learn.”

IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE ALL WINE, ALL THE TIME

“Break up the day a little bit. Hike or kayak in the morning, reset, then go to a tasting. Five days in a row of three or four winery visits every day leads to burnout, especially if you are drinking at dinner.”

Map It Out

Plan your route in advance.

Even though Napa Valley is a relatively small area, it can take a while to move between places. Investigate your route in advance to allow enough time to get around.

From Grape to Glass

Only the best grapes end up in your glass. Here’s how it happens.

Go to VisitNapaValley.com and search “wine tastings under $50” for ideas on more budget-friendly places to sip. Or, find your perfect Napa Valley itinerary.

1. Winter pruning

After harvest, vineyard workers train vines to grow a certain way, allowing for precision and timing at harvest.

2. Bud break and flowering

Over a two-month period, the first buds emerge. After a month, tight bunches of flowers dot the vines; each can form a grape berry.

3. Fruit set

The now-pollinated flowers drop their petals, and a tiny green grape emerges at the end of each stem. Bunches take shape and the fruit ripens, thanks to the remarkable climate.

4. Canopy management and crop thinning

Leaf removal and shoot thinning is needed to ensure shade, sunlight, and air flow for grape clusters before crop thinning—the “green harvesting” of unripe or imperfect fruit.

5. Veraison

All grapes begin green, but now they reveal variety characteristics. This color-changing period is called “veraison.”

6. Harvest

After grapes have been tasted and tested for sugar levels (called “brix”), it’s time to harvest. Usually, grapes are hand-picked at night or early morning because cooler temps help stabilize sugar levels and ensure fresh fruit aroma.

7. Crush

Once harvested, grapes are sorted, destemmed, and pressed before being sent to an appropriate vessel.

8. Fermentation

Yeast is typically added to initiate the fermentation process. When fermentation is complete, the wine is transferred to a barrel, cement egg, amphora, or stainless steel tank to age and develop.

9. Aging

Winemakers use a variety of receptacles to impart character that will develop over time. Everything from stainless steel tanks to American, French, or Hungarian oak barrels are used to properly develop the wine profile.

10. Bottling

When wine has aged completely to the winemaker’s preferences, it’s time to bottle. Once in the bottle, wine may be allowed to bottle age for a few months or several years.

that dot the landscape. After your active adventure, enjoy lunch at a restaurant or picnic at a winery, followed by a wine tasting with a dedicated host.

SADDLE UP

Horse lovers take note: Napa Valley Trail Rides offers vineyard tours by horseback for the equestrian enthusiast and curious alike. Starting from the historic Rapp Ranch on the Shadybrook Estate Winery property, take in vineyard views in the beautiful Coombsville AVA during a 30- or 50-minute trail ride. Then, brush off the dust from your boots and cowboy hat before taking a seat on the expansive patio at the winery for a tasting of estate wines paired with an assortment of cheeses, charcuterie, and accompaniments.

VALLEY SAFARI

See the valley in a whole new way, via tuk-tuk on a private back-roads tour of wineries and vineyards with Laces and Limos. Allow your sense of play to lead the way as you visit local wineries before indulging in a farm-to-table lunch among the vines. Prepared by a local chef, enjoy open-faced tartines on fresh-baked bread and salads with sparkling wine. You may even get to say “hello” to Chester and Jo—an alpaca and a donkey—on your way back.

DRESS SMART

Wineries may have uneven paths, so wear sensible shoes. Dress in layers, as temperatures drop inside of wine caves and in the evening. Turn to page 30 for what to wear.

SAVE FOR YOUR SIPS

Budget for tasting fees, which range from $20 to $200 or more based on the experience. Gratuities for tasting ambassadors and wine attendants are always graciously accepted.

Tasting Terms

Ever heard someone describe wine and think: What are they talking about? Here’s a quick guide of some commonly used terms to give you a leg up for your next tasting.

Acidity

That crisp zing that makes your mouth water. Wines without acidity are called flat or flabby.

Balanced

When the main components— acid, fruit, and alcohol—live in harmony on your taste buds.

Body

Categorized as light, medium, or full, body is the impression of the weight or thickness on your palate.

Dry

The opposite of sweet, a dry wine is free from any residual sugar after fermentation.

Fruity

The intensity of fruit in a wine’s aroma and on the palate. While fruity and sweet can often be conflated, a fruity wine isn’t always sweet.

Mouthfeel

How a wine feels in your mouth—soft, chewy, rough, round, complex, and more.

Oaky

Related to wine that’s been aged in an oak barrel, this shows up as vanilla notes in whites and smoky, toasty tones in reds.

Tannins

An important component of red wine, tannins add structure and can be described as astringent, firm, silky, or soft. When tannins are described as “chewy,” it means they have a dense, robust, and textured quality akin to chewing on a piece of fruit skin or a tea bag.

Nick Runkle, the Stanly Ranch farm director, and his team have developed several eco-friendly practices, including a composting partnership with a nearby animal sanctuary, drip lines for irrigation, and bringing in sheep to assist with vineyard maintenance. And the team’s commitment to nurturing quality ingredients for the resort’s culinary program, including Bear restaurant, is a big point of pride.

“Creating menus that highlight local ingredients helps support farmers and the local economy,” says Runkle. “At Bear, guests taste ingredients that grow just 50 yards away. Food tastes better, and is better for you, when it’s fresh.“

Q & A

Napa Valley wineries continue to make big strides with impressive culinary offerings.

The culinary team at Louis M. Martini Winery is led by Executive Chef Aaron Meneghelli, a Napa Valley native whose credentials include stints in well-known kitchens throughout the region. (He even has a Michelin nod under his toque.) Here, he offers insight into the rich world of culinary and wine pairings, along with tips on how to best enjoy the decadent experience.

Q: How do the winemaker and culinary team collaborate on creating a pairing menu?

the star. This community-driven restaurant showcases traditional ingredients inspired by the flavors of Oaxaca, the Nayarit coast, the Baja peninsula, and Veracruz. Savor house-made mole negro, masa tortillas, and a tequila- and mezcal-forward cocktail menu. The Charter Oak in St. Helena serves seasonal, fresh meals and a house-made bread that is based on a 100year-old sourdough starter. The Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil has maintained its Michelin star for 16 consecutive years, with multi-course brunch, lunch, and dinner menus that embody California cuisine. With the largest selection of Napa Valley wines in the world, PRESS Restaurant serves modern American fare in a classic wine-country atmosphere in St. Helena. If it’s on the menu, the Kusshi oysters with whipped coconut water are a must-try. And further north at Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley, Auro earned a Michelin star for its harmonious blend of flavors, hospitality, and luxury indulgences. Reserve a seating and explore chef Rogelio Garcia’s tasting menu, featuring hyper-local ingredients.

AM: First, I look at the seasonal produce available. Then, it’s about finding ways that those foods will align with the wines. When the two teams meet, we all benefit. Each person has a different perspective on the pairings. I lean on the winemakers to hear what they are pulling from the wine, because they’ve been tasting the wine each step of the way.

Q: Wine tasting and pairing can feel overwhelming. What’s your advice on how to enjoy the experience?

AM: Don’t overthink it. Wine and food are subjective, and I encourage guests to express what they are tasting. Understanding that our palates are different and that we will experience these flavors and textures differently is arguably the most exciting part of the experience. It allows us to learn from each other and find new revelations about the wine and food.

Q: How does a wine and food pairing differ from a standard wine tasting?

PERFECT PAIRING

Cabernet Sauvignon + Red Meat

“This classic pairing works because the tannins and fat create balance and expose what’s beneath— the nuance of the fruit in the wine complements the flavors of the food.”

AM: Food and wine pairings allow our guests the ability to truly taste more of the wine as the food interacts with it. When tasting wine, especially multiple glasses of Cabernet Sauvignon, the subtle differences can be hard to detect, even for those with some experience. When tasting alongside multiple layers of flavors, as well as experiencing the interaction of fats, salts, and acids, it’s easier to pick up the subtleties in the wine in a new way. Overall, we show the diversity of the wine, and guests are able to engage in what they are tasting in a more in-depth way.

The Intersection of Architecture and Sculpture

Jacques Lesec and his larger-than-life metalwork brings light to the Napa Valley art scene.

Graduating from the University of California, Los Angeles during the height of the 2008 recession left Jacques Lesec at a crossroads. After realizing the field of architecture paired perfectly with his natural curiosities, he opted to return to school and pursue a Master’s degree at the Southern California Institute of Architecture. In 2016, he relocated to Napa and shortly thereafter created Jacques Lesec Architecture and Studio Lesec, where art influences architecture and vice versa.

At Studio Lesec, the artist shapes traditionally weighty materials into ethereal organic forms, such as the three flower, electrically lighted installation, Poppy Love, an evolving piece on display each year at the renowned BottleRock Napa Valley music festival.

“By exploring concepts on a larger scale,” remarks Lesec, “I hope to provide a unique perspective and greater appreciation for our surroundings.”

Craftsman Architecture and Design

From foraged art to a force of art.

A visionary who is passionate about aesthetic, art, and architecture, Richard Von Saal continues to make an indelible impression on the Napa Valley art scene. No scale or scope is too small or too grand for Von Saal, whose thoughts and ideas flow freely and are conjured into masterfully created works—from handcrafted Game of Thrones-style solid oak and iron dining tables to fully customized wine cellars made from walnut wood, steel, and glass to complete architectural designs and builds such as a winery tasting lounge. There are myriad customizations and artful creations Von Saal has contributed to the hip vibe of Napa Valley, and one need not look far to find his signature.

Take note of fully designed and crafted spaces at a multitude of iconic Napa Valley wineries including Covert Estate, Ghost Block Estate, JaM Cellars, and The Prisoner Wine Company. Remark at remodels and refreshes of classics such as the Opera House in downtown Napa or Model Bakery in St. Helena. Stroll down First Street in Napa and eye the standout building that the California Brandy House calls home—yes, that’s a Von Saal design, too.

The list goes on. All the brainchild of Von Saal and all designed and manufactured at his studio, a unique space at the edge of downtown Napa, where this self-taught “bespokesman” crafts his magic, building upon years-long skills that he has acquired in his quest to create.

Though a self-taught welder and woodworker, Von Saal cannot be relegated to any one medium or modality. While he is perhaps best known for repurposing materials, whether metal or wood, into bespoke and unique creations, his passion for salvaging materials began as somewhat of a necessity.

“I didn’t have the money,” he quips, “so, I had to forage when I wanted to create an idea.” Now, Von Saal is so ingrained in the community—local arborists often offer him felled trees to fuse into fashion—that foraging is less a necessity than it is a welcome accolade and endorsement from the place he has called home since 1984.

He is midway through transforming a long-unoccupied building, located near the Oxbow district of downtown Napa, into both a workspace and gallery.

“I have wanted this building since I was in high school,” he says. “Its strong mid-century style and grandiose windows resonate with me and I want people to experience the beauty in dichotomies—old and new, edgy and plush— that’s what life is.”

Chat with Von Saal and be immediately taken by the energy that his life’s work brings to him—it’s palpable. Even the whisper of an idea will, in the hands of this craftsman, evolve into something surreal and, undoubtedly, a work of art in a class all its own.

Napa Valley Venues

In Napa Valley, romantic settings, full-service venues, and stunning backdrops aren’t something out of a fairytale—they are all real.

Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley

RESORTS

Winery Definition Ordinance

Established decades ago in Napa Valley, this ordinance allows for only a handful of wineries in Napa Valley to host weddings on-site. But, there are dozens of vineyard-adjacent venues where you can celebrate. KNOT NOTES

At Auberge du Soleil, host your ceremony on the outdoor terrace, then wow your guests with a reception dinner from the resort’s Michelin-starred culinary team. Say your vows on the 10,000-square-foot lawn at Carneros Resort and Spa; the resort also features elegant indoor spaces with high ceilings and natural light. The Estate Yountville offers an array of wedding spaces like a spacious barrel room, lush lawns, and an elegant gazebo. Surrounded by nine acres of vineyards, The Meritage Napa has it all, including 80,000 square feet of flexible indoor and outdoor event spaces and hundreds of guest rooms for your friends and family. Silverado Resort has a full team of experts and multiple site options surrounded by the serene and natural beauty of manicured greens. Solage in Calistoga has a lush event lawn bordered by white roses in the summer, and indoor spaces include an airy farmhouse with sliding glass walls opening to outdoor terraces. Also in Calistoga, Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley offers several on-site venues centered around the resort’s working vineyard and winery, Elusa. The Vineyard Barn and Lawn is elegantly rustic, while the Calistoga Ballroom evokes modern wine-country style.

Raise Your Glass

Which Napa Valley sparkling wine will toast the happy couple?

CHANDON, one of the first French-owned sparkling wine ventures in the U.S., is a household name that combines French tradition with top-tier fruit. Try the bright bubbles in Yountville—CHANDON’s newly renovated property features multiple sparkling wine tasting experiences.

Known for its Napa Valley Blanc de Noirs and California Brut, Paula Kornell is a St. Helena mainstay.

Calistoga’s Schramsberg Vineyards is the oldest (more than 150 years!) sparkling wine producer in Napa Valley. The winery is open for tours and personalized experiences.

The JCB Collection offers a nine-bottle sparkling wine portfolio and is an ode to Burgundian family tradition with California terroir. Schedule an appointment at the JCB Tasting Salon in Yountville.

In Oakville, Mumm Napa is regarded for its Brut Prestige— and its luxurious atmosphere. Tastings take place on the property’s many terraces and offer relaxed experiences and incredible views of the valley floor.

Did You Know?

Your wedding party can glamp on the Triple S Ranch property for your entire wedding weekend.

BOUTIQUE INNS

Over half of Napa Valley’s accommodations have 30 rooms or fewer, making these boutique inns perfect for full buyouts. Book the entire inn for you and your guests for a convenient, one-stop-shop wedding weekend. Host the entire affair, from your ceremony to reception, in one cozy location.

The Francis House, located just two blocks from Calistoga’s main street, charms with well-appointed nuances, reminiscent of a country manor in France. St. Helena’s Harvest Inn is a Tudor-style manor house with several spaces for weddings, including an incredible vineyard-view terrace. Exchange vows at Bann at Oak Knoll Napa in the lavender garden, pergola, or courtyard. Make the 19th century Churchill Manor your wedding-day home away from home, where timeless details include ornately carved moldings and mantles, as well as a veranda. In downtown Napa, the 17-room White House Inn provides a stately backdrop for wedding-day photos.

Only in Napa Valley

Looking for something a bit different for your wedding day? Napa Valley has several unique venues found nowhere else.

For an experience that everyone will talk about for years to come, usher in newly wedded bliss onboard the Napa Valley Wine Train Board everyone, including the happy couple, the officiant, and guests, and party on down the tracks. In downtown Napa, the gleaming copper cookery or the outdoor amphitheater at CIA at Copia make for fantastic wedding photo backdrops. Head north to St. Helena’s CIA at Greystone campus—this former monastery and winery delivers old-world charm,

featuring stone-walled barrel rooms for unique ambience. The culinary theme continues at Brasswood Estate, with multiple venues, and Tre Posti, a wedding space with several venues and a culinary team that blends Italian cuisine with local ingredients. For a rustic yet modern farmhouse feel, say “I do” at Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch in the airy modern barn, then kick off the reception with games on the vineyard-adjacent lawn and enjoy food cooked over a live fire. Exchange your vows beneath a massive, historic walnut tree at Triple S Ranch, a 12-acre private estate in the mountains above Calistoga. And imagine memorializing your big day in the sculpture meadow at di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, where your love for one another and the arts will shine through the entire celebration.

Ask the Wedding Expert Q &

A

Rebecca Johnson, event planner and owner of Rebecca Johnson Design and O’Donnell Lane, has more than 20 years of experience planning weddings in Napa Valley. This expert is as cool as it gets. Her wedding advice is top-notch and will certainly make your special day memorable.

Q: Describe a Napa Valley wedding in three words. RJ: I could go on and on, but Napa Valley weddings are extraordinary, unforgettable, unparalleled, and distinctive. That’s four words!

Q: What’s trending in Napa Valley weddings?

RJ: Couples are becoming more mindful of the guest experience. They’re inviting guests to have a Napa Valley vacation, whether that means horseback riding through a vineyard, riding the Napa Valley Wine Train, or taking a cooking class. There are so many opportunities.

Q: Does Napa Valley have a peak wedding season?

RJ: April through October is peak season, but the weather is so good here year-round that there’s not a bad time to plan a wedding. You can still have an outdoor wedding in late fall. I really love a beautiful winter wedding. Plus, there are great pricing options during the winter months since that’s considered off-peak season.

Q: How can couples stay stress-free during the planning process?

RJ: Having a local wedding planner is key. Couples need someone who is boots on the ground, knows the under-the-radar properties, and has relationships with local vendors.

Q: Any words of advice for couples considering a Napa Valley destination wedding?

RJ: Consider a resort wedding if you want that community feel with your guests, such as seeing your friends and family by the pool, taking a yoga class together, walking around the property with friends while sipping wine. There’s nothing better than being together at the same place. You’ll see the aunt you haven’t seen for 10 years, then run into her at the bar. It’s really so fun!

Clink & Drink

So many ways to say “Cheers!”

While Napa Valley is best known for wine, the region is also home to several breweries, distilleries, and fun cocktail bars. Book a six-hour beer tour with Napa Native Tours, or plan a beer crawl along the Napa Valley Ale Trail with stops at Barnhouse Napa Brews, Trade Brewing, Napa Valley Brewing Company (located at the Calistoga Inn), and Cadet. (See page 130 for more places to grab a pint.)

And for something a little stronger, toast with friends at California Brandy House or Napa Valley Distillery

Check out ZuZu if you’re a gin and tonic fan, while tequila lovers shouldn’t miss Chispa, the valley’s first tequila bar.

Getaway Before the Big Day

For one last fling before the ring, head to Napa Valley.

If your idea of the ultimate bachelor or bachelorette party involves wine tasting, relaxing at the spa, or hitting the links, then Napa Valley should be at the top of your list. Here’s how to celebrate the bride- and groom-to-be in Napa Valley style.

KNOT NOTES

Nightlife & Events

Toast to the happy couple under the stars at the Sky & Vine Rooftop Bar at the Archer Hotel before heading out for the evening. Head over to Blue Note Napa for lively jazz and keep the party going at JaM Cellars Wine and Music Studio, which rocks with live music Thursday to Saturday during the summer months. Or, plan your pre-wedding getaway around signature events like Blue Note Jazz Festival or BottleRock Napa Valley both of which happen each year in summer.

TOUR & TASTE

Take the stress out of finding your way around Napa Valley and leave the driving to someone else. Platypus Wine Tours offers custom private group tours complete with transportation, winery stops, and a picnic lunch. For a bespoke itinerary and local insight, ride through the valley with Master Wine Tours

To customize your own tasting experience, Napa Valley features very walkable downtown areas, each with fun and unique tasting rooms and wine collectives. Located in a vintage gas station and garage, Calistoga’s hip Tank Garage Winery sources grapes from vineyards across California to

A few minutes away, enjoy small-production sips in a National Historic Landmark building at Vintner’s Collective.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

For the bachelors and bachelorettes whose idea of fun is getting outside and working up a sweat, Napa Valley delivers. Take a guided hike with Active Wine Adventures through scenic trails, then toast with a well-deserved beverage at lunch. (Turn to page 91 for more unique tasting experiences.) If solo exploration is more your pace, you don’t need to explore the outdoors with a guide. In Calistoga, the Oat Hill Mine Trail follows an old stagecoach route, offering sweeping views of the valley. For a more leisurely hike, make the gentle climb through Napa vineyards to the iconic Grape Crusher statue overlooking both Highway 29 and beautiful vineyards, or explore

the Napa River Bay Trail, which heads south through the wetlands in American Canyon, and spot hawks and snowy egrets. Explore the Napa River on a paddleboard or kayak. Bring your gear or rent it when you book a guided tour with Napa Valley Paddle or Enjoy Napa Valley. Rent electric bikes from Fat Tire Bike Rentals before cruising the Napa Valley Vine Trail, or go for a spin on a full-day guided pedal with Napa Valley Bike Tours, which includes wine tasting and a picnic lunch. (Go to page 150 for more hiking and biking ideas.) Take a break from enjoying world-class wines and head to the fairway for nine or 18 holes—and those views! Book a tee time at any of Napa Valley’s outstanding golf courses. Tee off among the vines at Chardonnay Golf Club or Eagle Vine Golf Club in American Canyon, or squeeze in a quick nine at Vintner’s Golf Club in Yountville. And if a championship course is more your thing, play a round at the legendary PGA course at Silverado Resort.

Head to VisitNapaValley.com and search “bachelor and bachelorette parties” for more ways to celebrate.

R&R

Nothing like a little pampering

Find your group’s inner zen with a yoga class from Napa Valley Yoga Center or turn up the heat for a deep stretch session at Hot Yoga Calistoga. Reserve a spot for any of the morning hike and yoga experiences at The Meritage Napa and enjoy a gentle walk followed by meditation and a vinyasa session. Pamper yourselves with a spa day—there are no shortages of indulgent spa experiences in Napa Valley (p. 142). For a quintessential Napa Valley experience, head to the northernmost town of Calistoga for renowned mud and mineral baths.

Moonacre Spa & Baths, Baths at Roman Spa, and Calistoga Spa and Hot Springs are always good places for a detoxifying soak.

Q & A

With a reliable and experienced planner by your side, all you have to do is say, “What’s next?”

Lora Elder, Access DMC director of business development and strategic partnerships, talks about the benefits of a Napa Valley meeting and team retreat.

Q: Why meet in Napa Valley?

LE: Compared to other meeting destinations, Napa Valley is smaller, and more personalized and approachable. The valley is one of the few U.S. destinations that stands up to other well-known international travel hubs. For domestic travelers, it’s easy to get here. The friendly locals are welcoming to visitors, our wine and culinary options are spectacular, and the scenery is breathtaking.

Q: What can meeting attendees expect in Napa Valley?

LE: Before we start planning, we want to know about the attendees. Is it a board of directors retreat? They’re probably wine club members and don’t want a first-time visitor’s experience. If it’s a group in their mid-20s on an incentive trip, chances are they’ve never been here before. We meet the client where they are, then deliver above and beyond expectations.

Q: How do you plan itineraries?

LE: There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all agenda. We offer wine-centric activities, but groups opt for culinary and active experiences, too. Some want to focus on health, balance, and wellbeing, and Napa Valley has spas and wellness activities in spades.

Q: What kind of impact does a Napa Valley retreat leave on attendees?

LE: I have clients that will spend tons of money on decor in other destinations, because an empty ballroom is just a ballroom. But here, so many settings are beautiful just the way they are. Napa Valley is a farm town, and there’s an authenticity and beauty here that permeates everything. Above all, Napa Valley is not formulaic. We work for that jaw-dropping moment when groups walk into a place, and totally forget about everything else.

Team Bonding

With a diverse range of group opportunities and experiences, your next team-building session never looked so good or encouraged so much fun!

The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) at Copia offers cooking classes, culinary demonstrations, and interactive wine tastings that will have your group saying in unison, “Yes, chef!” Toast to your team with a custom-blended bottle of wine. Raymond Vineyards, Judd’s Hill, and Merryvale Vineyards offer interactive blending experiences where teams can create personal wine blends under the watchful eye of a professional, bottle their masterpieces, and take them home. Trade the staid conference room for an elegant, historic train car and treat your group to lunch and wine tasting on the iconic Napa Valley Wine Train. The sky’s

the limit when it comes to brainstorming from a higher perspective—literally and figuratively! Get your team in a hot air balloon basket and soar. Balloons Above the Valley provides group tours and excursions for up to 60 people per outing with roundtrip hotel transportation, breakfast bites, a pre-flight sparkling wine toast, and a post-flight lunch. Not only does The Meritage Napa offer several event spaces, the expansive resort organizes group experiences including a mindful meetings package, wine tastings, and spa and wellness options.

At Round Pond Estate, enjoy a guided olive oil tasting workshop for groups of 8 to 10 people.
