Taking flight, Tarangire National Park, Tanzania While the rest of the family was watching a herd of elephants, I had been dying to get a photo of this gorgeous bird, a lilac-breasted roller. After a 30-minute wait, the youngest elephant finally got close enough to the bird to make it take flight. I was lucky enough to catch it just as it flew past the herd. Jake Rudin, Student

Lion’s breath, Kalahari, Botswana We woke to the sound of a lion roaring. As we had coffee in the darkness around the campfire, the lion continued to roar. Our guide was confident that he could find him, so we abandoned breakfast and set off. As the dawn broke we found the lion, his breath leaving a cloud in the still-freezing morning air as he roared. It was one of the most magical moments. Less than a minute later, the light had changed slightly and the lion heard the return roars of his family and set off to find them. Jackie Campbell, Manager

Great grey owl digging for voles, near Lake Oulujärvi, Kajaani, Finland These magnificent owls spend the winter here in order to find their favourite food – the vole. They sit in the trees waiting to dive into the snow to catch the voles that they can hear deep beneath. Finland in early February is a very cold place to stand motionless in the middle of a field but, having located an owl, we waited patiently together. It missed the vole on this occasion but then began trying to dig it out from the snow. Salar de Uyuni after the rain, Bolivia After an initial rainy day we woke up to see the salt desert covered in a thin layer of water – creating a perfect reflection. This photo was taken a few miles from our hostel, when another group of jeeps drove past us. Guy Nesher, Web developer Canon 350D, 18-55mm lens @ 55mm, 1/200 sec @ f/10, ISO 100

In the yellow, Kyingtone Town, Myanmar (Burma) Rice farms turn a very beautiful yellow colour in the winter season. I found these particular rice farms a few years ago when I was leading a tour, and made a note for the future. To shoot this scene I had to wait until the Akhar women were coming back from their farms. Kyaw Kyaw Winn, Tour leader Nikon D200, 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6, 1/320 sec, @ f/8, ISO 200

Storm over Blackstone Nature Reserve, Severn Valley, England I was taking pictures of the trains going past this amazing poppy field just outside Bewdley when a nasty storm brewed up and bolts of lightning began to feather the horizon. In an attempt to catch one of them I adopted a wideangle lens and began to shoot continuous bursts in jpeg mode on my camera when I thought one was due. I caught several lightning bolts, but only one in a decent position in the frame. It was a very intense storm and we had to run back to our cars for our own safety very shortly after this was taken. Careful, brother‌, Bagbazar, Kolkata, India Travellers to the city may still seek out vestiges of the Kolkata of yore in the labyrinthine streets of Bagbazar. In some quaint little alley, one may even chance upon an itinerant kaan-saafwallah (ear-cleaner), armed with his strange array of tools, attending to a terrified customer. Blue tabular iceberg at sunset, James Ross Island, Antarctic Peninsula Huge tabular icebergs calve from Antarctic ice-sheets, some as big as Yorkshire. They epitomise the Antarctic marine environment. These icebergs (the one I photographed was miniscule, around 1 sq km) can scour across the seabed to depths of hundreds of metres. Around the Antarctic Peninsula, 87% of the glaciers are in retreat. My heart bleeds with the melting ice. Cath Waller, Lecturer in marine ecology Nikon D200, 48mm, 1/160 sec @ f/5, ISO 100

Olympic Tower Bridge, London, England I took this photo a week before the Olympics kicked off in London. There was a great buzz around town – Tower Bridge was packed with tourists and journalists exploring central London and admiring the sights along the Thames. The Olympic Rings looked amazing on Tower Bridge. I had wanted to capture the bridge with the rings lit up – the position of the rings along with the top of the bridge and light trails created amazing lines that fitted together perfectly. I set up my tripod to capture this image just in time – a few moments after I took the shot the bridge was cleared and then raised to allow a boat to pass through.
