Donald's Journey: A Tale of Passion, Hard Work, and Jewelry Making Mastery Donald's fascination with gemstones began in his youth when he stumbled upon rough Garnet, Topaz, and Ruby while on a trip to Franklin, North Carolina. His childhood friend's parents, both jewelers, introduced him to the art of jewelry making, igniting a passion that he pursued throughout high school and at college at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. After several years as a model maker at Harold Freeman Jewelry MFG, Donald struck out on his own, crafting custom jewelry for a local store. His love for gemstones led him to pursue a Graduate Gemologist Degree from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), which he earned in 2008.
In 2006, Donald relocated to Santa Fe, NM, teaching at Santa Fe Community College and later joining forces with Gusterman Silversmiths. Since 2010, he has consistently created his own jewelry designs showcased at Gusterman Silversmiths. Donald's design process is heavily influenced by nature's beauty and the unique characteristics of each gemstone. He meticulously hand carves wax prototypes and ensures that each design has precise diamond carat and gold or platinum weights. Donald's journey is a testament to how dedication and hard work can lead to a successful career in the jewelry industry.
