“This is a very special place for the whole school” Rainbow Garden opens at local primary school Children at Stallingborough Church of England Primary School are already enjoying a newly opened Rainbow Sensory Garden, designed to help them relax, connect with nature and explore their senses.

Officially opened this month, the garden provides a dedicated outdoor space where children can regulate their emotions, reflect, engage with the natural environment and enjoy quiet time. Features include installations that encourage exploration of sounds, colours, textures and scents. Sensory spaces are increasingly recognised for their role in supporting children’s wellbeing, helping them feel calm, develop curiosity and engage positively with learning. The Rainbow Garden was created in memory of Reverend Christine, whose contribution to the school community continues to be remembered fondly. Emily Powell, Headteacher at Stallingborough Church of England Primary School, said: “We are delighted to officially open our Rainbow Garden in memory of Reverend Christine, who was such a wonderful lady and brought so much light and joy to our school community.

“This is a very special place for the whole school. It offers children and staff a peaceful environment where they can reflect, connect with nature and explore their senses. “It is already being enjoyed by so many people, and we are incredibly grateful for the funding and support that helped make it possible.” The project was made possible through the High Needs Provision Capital Allocation, a government fund provided to local authorities to improve facilities for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Coordinated by North East Lincolnshire Council, the funding supports long-term improvements to school environments, including sensory spaces, accessibility adaptations and other infrastructure projects that promote inclusion. Several schools across North East Lincolnshire have already successfully secured funding, with grants of up to £10,000 helping to bring projects from concept to reality.

02

Ann-Marie Matson, Director of Children’s Services at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “These grants give schools a valuable opportunity to enhance their provision and create more inclusive environments for children and young people. “Schools can receive up to £10,000, which can be combined with their own funding to deliver projects that make a meaningful difference. “The Rainbow Garden is a fantastic example of how schools can use this funding to support inclusion and wellbeing. By combining a sensory space with a tranquil outdoor environment, the garden offers benefits for the entire school community. “We look forward to seeing more schools take advantage of this opportunity in future funding rounds.” Schools will be able to apply for a third round of funding, giving more settings the opportunity to deliver projects that improve accessibility, inclusion and support for pupils with SEND as part of the Local Area SEND Reform Plan strategy.

From classroom to construction site: Cleethorpes students explore future careers Students from Cleethorpes Academy went behind the scenes at the Sea Road development in Cleethorpes to discover the many careers involved in bringing a major construction project to life.

into the work taking place on-site and the wide range of career opportunities available within the construction industry. Their positive attitude and eagerness to learn made the experience thoroughly enjoyable, and we hope to welcome some of them back in the future as the next generation of construction professionals.” The Sea Road development will transform a brownfield site in Cleethorpes with a new three-storey building featuring retail or hospitality space, public amenities and a Changing Places facility.

Hosted by contractors Lindum Group, the visit gave selected Year 7, 8 and 9 students the chance to see a live construction site up close and learn about the skills, teamwork and range of jobs needed to turn plans into reality. From operating machinery and working on site to designing buildings, managing projects and planning developments, construction offers a wide range of career opportunities. For the students, the visit was a chance to discover what goes into a project of this scale and explore career paths they may not have previously considered. Some students on the visit were already thinking about their future:

Harry hopes to work in construction and drive a digger when he is older. The visit reaffirmed his ambitions, while also opening his eyes to different routes into the industry. “I now know you can even do an apprenticeship when you leave school,” he added.

To find out more about the Sea Road development and keep up to date with the latest progress, visit https://www.nelincs. gov.uk/2-sea-road/.

For Year 8 student Holly, one of the biggest surprises was discovering just how many people are involved in delivering a project like Sea Road. From the early planning stages to the work taking place on site, the visit showed how different roles and skills come together to make a development possible.

Year 7 student Darcey said she had learned more about what was happening on site and how much work and money goes into a large-scale development, something many of the students had not realised before.

Hayley Cowell, Social Value Lead at Lindum Group Ltd, lead the visit. She said: “The students were highly engaged throughout their visit to our Sea View site, demonstrating genuine curiosity and enthusiasm. They listened attentively, asked insightful questions and actively participated in discussions.

Her classmate Harry said: “I learnt how buildings like this are actually made, as well as how to get a job in the sector.”

“It was particularly rewarding to incorporate careers conversations into the tour, giving students a first-hand insight

MEET LEAH HECKLES Chartered Legal Executive I have been a member of the Employment and Litigation Team at BG Solicitors LLP for five years. My legal career began in general litigation before progressing into personal injury, providing a foundation for my subsequent work. I qualified as a Chartered Legal Executive in June 2007 and achieved qualification as a Chartered Legal Executive Litigator in July 2026. My route into the profession combined academic study with practical experience from the outset. Having completed my A-levels, I initially intended to take a year out before studying law at university. An opportunity to undertake sponsored training as a Chartered Legal Executive offered an alternative path, enabling me to enter the profession directly while working towards my qualifications. Since then, I have continued to develop my legal knowledge alongside practical experience. That opportunity established the course of my career, with professional study and day-to-day practice progressing together throughout my journey into my current role within BG Solicitors’ Employment and Litigation Team. What was your first job? My first ever job at 16 was working in a Bakery in Beverley Town Centre on a Saturday whilst at 6th Form. It was long days and put me off a lot of baked goods and cream cakes! Other

04

than that, I have only had jobs working within the Legal Profession. What made you want to join the team? I had worked with members of the Litigation and Personal Injury Team previously and undertook the majority of my legal training working alongside both Ben and Denise, before working closely with Laura at other Firms within Lincolnshire, so when the opportunity arose to join the Litigation Team at BG, it felt like a sign and I was excited to work with them all again. What’s one interesting fact about you that people might not know? I have developed a keen interest in the UFC because of my son wanting to pursue that career path – this means I will often get up in the middle of the night to watch fights with him. It is, however, not a sport I would ever want to pursue, although I am my son’s biggest fan when he competes. What do you enjoy doing outside work? I enjoying being outside and being active, spending time with my family and friends, cooking/eating and drinking nice wine. I also love to run, preferably in the cooler weather as I am not a lover of the heat. If you could have any job in the world for a day, what would it be? I guess it would be the head of MI5 – I am nosey and like to know what is going on!

What’s your favourite film, TV show or song? As a child of the 80’s and 90’s – I love all the classic films from that era, but mostly the Rocky films. I made my Husband, who had never watched ANY of them, watch them all before we got married. Are you a morning person or a night owl? Definitely not a night-owl, I am somewhat useless after 9pm, but I couldn’t honestly say I am a morning person either. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? I would really like to go to British Columbia in Autumn to see all the beautiful colours as Autumn is my favourite season. Whilst there I would also love to do lots of hiking through the forests and mountains, preferably staying in a remote log cabin with a fire and a bottle of red wine for the evenings. What are you most looking forward to in your new role? I’m mostly looking forward to working closely with the Partnership and contributing to the long-term future of BG Solicitors. For me, that means helping the Firm continue to thrive as a valued high street practice, while preserving the strong ethos that makes it special. It’s an exciting opportunity to help shape its future while staying true to its values and I am thrilled to join the other Partners.

MEET DENISE BELL Solicitor I work in the Civil Litigation team at BG Solicitors LLP, specialising in personal injury and clinical negligence. I also handle housing law matters, including possession cases, deposit protection issues and a wider range of housing disputes. I joined the firm in 2012 as a Chartered Legal Executive and, with the firm’s support, returned to De Montfort University to cross-qualify as a Solicitor in 2021. I feel fortunate to have had that opportunity. Becoming a partner is a special milestone for me, and I am grateful for the support and fantastic opportunities I have had to grow both personally and professionally at BG Solicitors LLP. Our client-focused approach is central to what we do. It means a great deal when clients take the time to leave positive reviews about me, the team and the firm, recognising our clientfocused and efficient service.

16. I worked part-time while studying for my A-levels and later gained experience in several other departments. I still remember saving up my wages to buy a hi-fi stereo. What made you want to join the team? After working for a corporate city firm, I was drawn to the opportunity to return to a local firm with strong family and community values. Those values are a real part of life at BG Solicitors LLP, and I have enjoyed seeing them grow stronger during my time here. What’s one interesting fact about you that people might not know? I can hit the target at axe throwing, a skill that tends to surprise people!

As I take on greater responsibility as a partner, I look forward to continuing to provide the high-quality service our clients value.

What do you enjoy doing outside work? After a busy working day, I enjoy life’s quieter moments spending time near the beach, reading, crocheting and baking. With so many fundraising and charity events at BG Solicitors LLP, there is always a good reason to put my baking skills to use.

What was your first job? My first job was stacking shelves at Asda when I was

If you could have any job in the world for a day, what would it be? I would be a

crime scene investigator. The opportunity to piece together evidence and help solve a mystery would be fascinating. What’s your favourite film, TV show or song? I’m more likely to be found with a book in hand. My favourite is The Time Traveller’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Are you a morning person or a night owl? Definitely a morning person. I’m usually the first person awake in our household, and I enjoy making the most of that quiet time with a book or a podcast. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? I was born in Canada and spent the first 5 years of my life there. I have never returned and would love to visit one day to see where my early years were spent. What are you most looking forward to in your new role? Alongside my legal work, I am one of BG Solicitors LLP’s mental health first aiders. As a partner, I look forward to continuing to help shape the firm’s internal culture and supporting an environment where wellbeing is valued.

MEET VICTORIA ROWSON Solicitor/Member of the Children’s Panel My name is Victoria Rowson, and I am an Associate Solicitor in the public law family team at BG Solicitors, having joined the firm in 2023. In 2015, I became a member of the Law Society’s Children’s Panel and am also a member of Resolution. Having studied, trained and qualified in the North East, 2017 marked a return to my Lincolnshire roots after several years in Newcastle, where my career in family law continued to develop. For me, care work is particularly

If you could have any job in the world for a day, what would it be? I would design wedding dresses.

Are you a morning person or a night owl? I am a morning person. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? Iceland would be somewhere that I would like to visit to experience the northern lights. What are you most looking forward to in your new role? Helping the firm grow and go from strength to strength whilst not losing sight of the quality values that we hold.

With so much happening over the coming months, it’s a good time to plan an evening out. Whether it’s live comedy, a favourite theatre production or a festive show with the family, Parkway has plenty to choose from. Comedy takes centre stage on Friday 13 November when The Comedy Store Presents brings an evening of live standup to Cleethorpes. For anyone who enjoys a good laugh, it’s an opportunity to see live comedy on the doorstep and perhaps make an evening of it with friends. For those who enjoy something a little different, the event cinema programme offers the chance to experience acclaimed theatre, opera and ballet on the big screen, without travelling to the major stages themselves. These special screenings have become a popular way to enjoy productions that might otherwise involve a long journey, making everything from classical ballet to acclaimed stage performances more accessible. Among November’s highlights is GIANT: The Play, while a varied programme of special screenings brings even more

choice for those looking for something a little different from a traditional trip to the cinema. As December approaches, attention naturally turns towards Christmas, and Parkway has a number of seasonal performances to enjoy. The Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker arrives on 1 December, bringing one of the best-loved Christmas ballets to the big screen. With its familiar music, beautiful dancing and magical story, it remains a favourite with audiences of all ages and is a lovely way to begin the festive season. On Friday 4 December, A Christmas Audience with The Nolans promises an evening of music, memories and seasonal entertainment. André Rieu’s Christmas Concert: Let It Snow follows on Sunday 6 December, with festive music and the atmosphere of one of his spectacular concerts. For families, Jack and the Beanstalk brings traditional pantomime fun to Parkway throughout December. With all the familiar ingredients of a Christmas panto, it’s an outing that children, parents and grandparents can enjoy together. NEVER SAY GOODBYE Final Solo Acoustic Tour An intimate evening of songs and stories, plus an open Q & A session.

As lead singer and songwriter of The Stranglers during their golden period, Hugh Cornwell cast a spell mixing fact, history, mythology and ideology within the lyrics of the songs. It was a heady mix, leading to the band’s success throughout the world, and they became championed for experimentation and commerciality in equal measures. Hugh was responsible for all of the band’s most memorable songs across ten stellar albums that consolidated his stature as a unique songwriter and musician. His lyrics to “Golden Brown” are a songwriting masterclass. His solo career has led to ten albums of critically acclaimed songs, culminating in “Moments of Madness”, described as a “late flowering classic” and a “modernday masterpiece”. Hugh last performed acoustic solo performances in the UK in 2017 and will be heading out across the country this November 2026.

lincolnshireinfocus.co.uk

As well as dipping into both The Stranglers’ and his own wealthy catalogue of songs, he’ll be performing new songs from his next studio album, “Succubus”, the follow-up to “Moments of Madness”. These songs will be heard for the first time on this tour. There will also be an open mic moment in the show for the audience to ask him questions, which he will answer if possible.

“I’m not sure how much longer I can continue to perform, and so this will be my final solo acoustic tour.” Take this opportunity to experience the legendary acoustic live performance of one of the UK’s greatest living songwriters while you can. Just Hugh, a guitar, and a microphone.

A little local flavour this Christmas

A Taste of Christmas Celebrate the festive season with delicious dining, traditional favourites and the very best of local produce.

As November arrives, thoughts naturally turn towards Christmas and all the wonderful food that comes with it. From festive meals enjoyed with friends and family to the traditional Christmas Day roast, there is something special about gathering around the table at this time of year. For those who enjoy dining out, November is the perfect time to start making plans. Restaurants, country pubs and hotels across Lincolnshire are preparing their festive menus, offering everything from traditional turkey with

all the trimmings to seasonal dishes with a modern twist. Whether it is a Christmas lunch with friends, a family celebration or an evening out, booking early is always a good idea. Of course, much of the pleasure of Christmas comes from the food we enjoy at home, and our local butchers have plenty to offer. Many provide Christmas meat hampers, taking some of the stress out of festive shopping with selections of turkey, roasting joints, pigs in blankets, sausages and other seasonal favourites. But Christmas dinner does not always have to mean turkey. A beautifully cooked joint of beef, glazed gammon or traditional roast goose can make a wonderful alternative. For something a little different, Beef Wellington makes an impressive centrepiece, while slow-roasted lamb is another delicious option for a family gathering.

Our Bakery Our Meats

All of our pies and pastries are made using our own fresh locally sourced meats.

All our meats are fresh and locally reared: choose from turkey, chicken, beef, lamb and pork.

Vegetarian guests need not miss out on the festivities either. A mushroom and chestnut Wellington, festive nut roast or roasted butternut squash filled with cranberries, nuts and herbs can be just as special, particularly when served with all the traditional Christmas trimmings. Ordering ahead gives you the opportunity to discuss portion sizes, cooking advice and different options with your local butcher, helping make preparations that little bit easier. Supporting local businesses also helps our high streets thrive and celebrates the wonderful independent producers and retailers across Lincolnshire. So, whether you are planning a festive meal out or preparing Christmas dinner at home, now is the time to get organised and enjoy the very best of the season.

A little local magic this Christmas

The Joy of Giving Discover thoughtful gifts, festive treasures and the pleasure of shopping locally this Christmas.

With Christmas just around the corner, November is the perfect time to start thinking about gifts for family and friends. And while online shopping may be convenient, there is something rather special about browsing our local shops, discovering something unexpected and enjoying a little festive atmosphere along the way. It all adds to the magic of Christmas.

Jewellery is always a lovely choice for someone special, whether it is a timeless necklace, a sparkling pair of earrings or a watch to treasure for years to come. And for those planning a romantic Christmas proposal, the festive season provides a magical backdrop for popping the question.

Across Lincolnshire, our independent retailers, shopping centres and high streets offer plenty of inspiration, from beautiful jewellery and stylish accessories to homewares, handmade decorations and thoughtful stocking fillers.

With household budgets still feeling the pressure of rising living costs, thoughtful gifting does not have to mean spending a fortune. Handmade candles, locally crafted ceramics, personalised keepsakes and artisan treats can make wonderful presents, often with a more personal touch than something mass-produced.

Visiting local craft fairs, independent shops and shopping centres across the county is also a lovely way to find something different while supporting the talented makers and small businesses within our communities. Every purchase, however small, helps support local jobs and keeps our towns and high streets thriving. So, whether you are searching for that extra-special gift, planning a festive surprise or simply looking for a few stocking fillers, why not make shopping locally part of your Christmas traditions this year?

HOMES & GARDENS

A Warmer Home This Winter

Smart ways to stay comfortable while keeping energy costs in mind As temperatures begin to fall, attention inevitably turns to keeping our homes warm through the winter months. With energy bills remaining a significant household expense, finding ways to improve comfort without wasting heat has become more important than ever.

While we often think about heating in terms of how high we set the thermostat, the real difference can come from how effectively our homes retain and distribute warmth. One of the biggest considerations is heat loss. Older windows, poorly fitting doors and gaps around frames can all contribute to rooms feeling colder than they should. Modern double-glazed uPVC windows and well-insulated external doors can help reduce unwanted heat loss, eliminate troublesome draughts and create a more consistent indoor temperature. Although replacing windows is an investment, it is one that may bring benefits in comfort, reduced maintenance and energy efficiency for years to come. Of course, not every room needs to be heated in the same way. Many households now use their homes differently, with spare bedrooms doubling as offices or certain living spaces occupied for only a few hours each day. This is where supplementary heating can be worth considering. Portable heaters offer flexibility, particularly in rooms where additional warmth is occasionally needed. From electric models to portable gas heaters, there are various options available depending on the space and intended use. However, running costs can vary

considerably, so it is worth comparing the cost per hour with your existing central heating before deciding which is most economical. For gas heaters, choosing an appliance specifically designed for indoor use is essential, along with following the manufacturer’s instructions on ventilation, clearances and safe operation. A working carbon monoxide alarm is also important wherever fuel-burning appliances are used. Another area worth considering is heating control. Modern programmable

thermostats and thermostatic radiator valves can make it easier to manage temperatures in different rooms and avoid heating spaces unnecessarily. Even small adjustments to heating schedules can make a difference over the course of a winter. It is also worth looking beyond the heating itself. Loft insulation, properly sealed window frames and an efficiently maintained heating system all contribute to a home that holds on to warmth for longer. Ultimately, keeping warm through winter is not simply about using less heating. It is about making better use of the energy we pay for, choosing practical solutions that suit our homes and making improvements where they will have the greatest benefit. With a little forward planning, a warmer, more comfortable home need not mean accepting unnecessarily higher bills.

Switch and save: Switch Together could help residents beat rising bills Do you think you are you paying too much for your energy? Or wondering if now is the right time to switch or fix your tariff? North East Lincolnshire Council has partnered with Switch Together Energy – the national energy switching initiative formerly known as Big Community Switch, to help local residents save money on their bills while accessing tariffs backed by 100% renewable electricity. More than 20,000 households nationwide have registered for the latest Switch Together Energy scheme, highlighting the scale of interest in securing competitive energy deals ahead of the winter period. Following the scheme’s latest auction, registered residents can now access an exclusive, fixed-rate tariff with British Gas

priced £72 below the current Ofgem Price Cap, helping households secure certainty over their energy bills ahead of winter. With energy costs continuing to put pressure on household budgets, securing a fixed tariff below the current Ofgem Price Cap gives residents an opportunity to take control of their energy bills. Forecasts suggest prices could rise again in January, so locking in a competitive rate now could provide valuable peace of mind and help households avoid future increases.” Residents still have time to register and will receive a personal energy offer. Participation is free, and there is no obligation to switch.

George Frost, UK Head of Switch Together, said: “Staying on a standard variable tariff right now is like holding on to a rising balloon which is only going to keep going up. Fixing your rates now means that you will not be exposed to further price rises for the next 12 months. If you are looking for certainty, fix now. ”Many of us have just started to turn the heating back on after a long warm summer. If you don’t act now, you should brace yourself for bill shock over the winter months.” To register and find out more, visit: https://switchtogether.co.uk/energy/ north-east-lincolnshire/home

Chris Sharp Cabinets Celebrates 40 Years of Craftsmanship and Creativity

From its beginnings in furniture making to its work in kitchen design today, Chris Sharp Cabinets celebrates 40 years of craftsmanship, creativity and attention to detail.

The kitchen has always been known as the heart of the home. It is where families come together, share everyday moments and make lasting memories. At Chris Sharp Cabinets, a passion for creating beautiful, practical kitchens is combined with the skills and attention to detail that come from the company’s furniture-making heritage. This year marks a special milestone for the company, celebrating four decades of craftsmanship, experience and dedication to quality. Originally established as furniture makers, the business has evolved over the years to include kitchen design, bringing the same traditional skills, attention to detail and passion for beautiful interiors to every project. Over the years, kitchens have changed considerably. Once primarily a space for preparing meals, they have become central to family life, often combining cooking, dining and entertaining in one welcoming room. Yet while styles have evolved, the importance of quality, thoughtful design and attention to detail remains the same. The beauty of an individually designed kitchen lies in the freedom to create something truly personal. No two homes are quite alike, and neither are the people who live in them. From traditional country kitchens full of warmth and character to contemporary designs with clever storage solutions, every project offers an opportunity to make the most of the available space. Creating the perfect kitchen is about much more than selecting cupboard doors and worktops. It is about understanding how a room will be used and bringing those elements together in a design that feels just right.

“Beautiful kitchens begin with thoughtful design, attention to detail and a passion for quality craftsmanship.” Well-planned storage, carefully considered layouts and those allimportant finishing touches can make everyday life easier while creating a space that remains beautiful for years to come. With so many styles, materials and finishes to choose from, there are plenty of ways to create a kitchen that reflects your personality and complements your home. Considering the little details can make all the difference, creating a room that is both practical and a pleasure to spend time in.

As the company celebrates this milestone, it is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on four decades of craftsmanship and creativity, while looking forward to helping more homeowners create beautiful, individual spaces they can enjoy for years to come. After all, a beautifully designed kitchen is not simply about how it looks when finished, but the special memories that will be made there.

Reaching a 40th anniversary is no small achievement, particularly in a world where styles and customer expectations are constantly evolving. It reflects the value of experience, understanding customers’ needs and the enduring appeal of quality workmanship.

November

A Month of Quiet Work and Lasting Impact The vibrant blaze of October fades into gentler tones of copper, russet and soft gold as November arrives. Mornings turn crisp, evenings draw in early and the garden finally slows its pace. Yet despite its subdued atmosphere, November is far from dormant. It is a time for calm, reflective tasks and essential preparation—work that helps the garden withstand the cold months ahead and return with renewed energy in spring. Tidying Borders with Purpose

November invites a more thorough tidy of the borders, but selectivity is key. Cut back perennials that have collapsed or rotted, especially those that offer little winter structure. Leave upright seedheads from grasses, echinacea, sedum and rudbeckia; these catch frost beautifully and provide shelter and food for wildlife. Remove annuals, composting healthy material and discarding anything diseased. If you haven’t already mulched borders, apply a generous layer of compost or well-rotted manure now to lock in warmth, enrich the soil and suppress winter weeds.

Reading the Garden’s Structure With leaves dropping, the underlying shapes and lines of the garden become clearer. This is an ideal moment to evaluate your layout: consider adjusting bed shapes, planning new borders or adding structural planting. November is one of the best months for shrub planting—cooler temperatures reduce stress, and soil remains workable and welcoming for roots.

Images are all projects designed and constructed by Fullers.

Excellent shrubs to plant now include dogwood (Cornus), viburnum, winter honeysuckle, witch hazel, skimmia, holly, flowering currant, philadelphus, hydrangea and many other hardy deciduous plants.

Caring for Existing Shrubs

For shrubs already in place, focus on light pruning only. Remove dead, damaged or crossing stems but avoid heavy shaping until late winter or early spring. Protect tender plants with horticultural fleece or straw, particularly tree ferns, figs and borderline-hardy shrubs. Mulch generously around shrub bases to help insulate roots as temperatures fall. Hydrangeas— especially mophead and lacecap types— should largely be left alone; their old flower heads protect next year’s buds from frost.

The Final Call for Bulbs

November is the last opportunity to plant many spring-flowering bulbs. Tulips should be planted now—deeply, at three times the height of the bulb— to help prevent disease and produce strong, straight stems. Alliums and hyacinths can still be planted if soil conditions allow. To naturalise bulbs in lawns, scatter them randomly and plant where they fall for a relaxed, natural look. For containers, add grit for drainage and choose later-flowering varieties to extend your spring display.

26

Vegetable Garden: Clearing and Preparing

In the vegetable garden, November is a month of closure and groundwork. Clear spent crops promptly to reduce the risk of pests overwintering. Harvest hardy vegetables including leeks, Brussels sprouts, kale, parsnips and winter cabbage. Plant garlic and onion sets if not done earlier and sow broad beans in sheltered spots for an early spring crop. Mulch empty beds to protect soil structure from winter rain. Lift the last carrots and beetroot before the ground becomes too wet or cold. Supporting Wildlife as Winter Approaches Wildlife activity remains high as animals prepare for winter. Leave small leaf piles in quiet corners to offer shelter, keep birdbaths topped up and consider planting berry-rich shrubs such as cotoneaster or pyracantha to provide seasonal food. November may feel quiet, but its tasks are essential. With thoughtful planting, clearing, mulching and protection, you create a strong foundation for your garden to flourish once spring returns. Now is also the perfect time to get those bigger garden projects underway, so everything is ready to enjoy when the warmer summer months arrive. HOMES & CARE

It’s the thought that counts

The Little Things That Matter Sometimes it is the simplest gestures that mean the most to the people we love, bringing happiness, creating treasured memories and reminding them just how much they matter.

When was the last time you sat down with an older relative and really had a good chat? Not a quick telephone call to check everything is alright, or a hurried visit between other commitments, but an afternoon spent listening, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. Life can be busy, and it is easy to assume that our loved ones are perfectly happy getting on with their usual routines. Yet sometimes, something as simple as an unexpected visit or an invitation to Sunday lunch can make their entire week. Think about the things that bring your parents or grandparents pleasure. Perhaps your mum loves looking through old family photographs, your dad enjoys talking about the garden, or your grandmother has a favourite recipe she has been making for years. Taking an interest in these little things can create lovely moments together, while showing someone that their memories and experiences still matter.

Music can be another wonderful way to connect. Why not put on a few songs from their younger days and see what memories come flooding back? You might discover stories you have never heard before, and perhaps even find yourselves singing along. Sharing everyday activities can be just as rewarding. A trip to the local garden centre, a leisurely drive through the Lincolnshire Wolds, an ice cream by the seaside or simply sitting down with a cup of tea can provide companionship without the need for elaborate plans. After all, we are fortunate to have so many lovely places to enjoy right on our doorstep. And for those who are less mobile, bringing a little of the outside world to them can mean just as much. A favourite magazine, some freshly cut flowers, a homemade cake or a photograph of the grandchildren can brighten an ordinary afternoon. Of course, everyone is different. Some people enjoy company and conversation,

while others appreciate quieter moments. The important thing is understanding what makes your loved one happy and finding ways to make those moments happen more often. We often think that showing someone we care requires a grand gesture, but it rarely does. Sometimes it is remembering their favourite biscuits, asking about an old photograph or simply giving them our undivided attention. And perhaps that is something worth remembering in our own busy lives. As our loved ones grow older and their needs begin to change, knowing they are surrounded by kindness, companionship and understanding becomes even more important. Whether that support comes from family, friends or dedicated care professionals, it is the personal touches, familiar routines and genuine compassion that can make all the difference, helping people feel valued, comfortable and cared for at every stage of life.

The Wolds Care Centre

Gold Standard Care and Comfort, when it matters most Thinking about end-of-life care is never easy, but knowing that someone you love will be comfortable, listened to and treated with dignity can make a difficult time easier for everyone involved.

Good end-of-life care is about more than meeting someone’s physical needs. It means understanding what is important to each person, respecting their wishes, keeping families informed and making sure they feel supported throughout. The Wolds Care Centre in Louth has recently been re-accredited under the Gold Standards Framework (GSF) for the third consecutive time. The accreditation is awarded to care providers that meet high standards of proactive, personalised and co-ordinated end-of-life care. The assessment looks at care planning, communication with residents and families, teamwork and the support people receive during the final days of life. GSF accreditation lasts for three years, meaning The Wolds has now met the required standards through three consecutive accreditation periods.

Michaela Taylor, Registered Manager at The Wolds, said: “Providing high-quality end-of-life care is extremely important to us. Residents and their families should feel supported, listened to and treated with dignity at what can be one of the most difficult times in their lives. “This recognition reflects the care, compassion and professionalism our teams show every day, and we are very proud of everyone involved.” Leslie Pritchard, Clinical Lead at The Wolds, added: “Good end-of-life care is about seeing the person behind the care needs and making sure their wishes, comfort and dignity remain at the heart of everything we do. Working closely with residents, families and our wider care team allows us to provide personalised support and ensure people feel safe and listened to throughout.” The Wolds is a purpose-built home on North Holme Road with 66 en-suite bedrooms,

offering separate communities providing residential, nursing, dementia care as well as end-of-life care. Respite care is also available offering short-term care and support. Residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms with familiar belongings, while the home offers a café, cinema, hair salon, sensory areas and gardens. A programme of activities and 1:1 sessions helps residents continue with hobbies, interests and routines, with the team supporting people to remain as independent as possible. If your own vehicle isn’t quite suitable for the journey, hiring one for a few days can be a practical solution. Ready Rent a Car offers a wide choice of vehicles, from smaller cars for everyday journeys to spacious family vehicles, vans and larger options for business use. With different sizes available, customers can choose something that suits their plans rather than having to make do with what they already have. Of course, vehicle hire isn’t just for holidays or special occasions. An unexpected breakdown or a car needing repairs can leave you wondering how you’re going to

manage the school run, get to work or keep up with everyday commitments. Having access to a temporary vehicle means you can carry on with your usual routine while your own car is being sorted. For businesses and tradespeople, the winter months can bring their own demands. Some may need an additional van to cope with a busy period, while others might require a larger vehicle for a particular job or a temporary replacement while their usual transport is unavailable. Hiring can offer that extra flexibility without the expense of purchasing another vehicle. One of the advantages of vehicle hire is being able to choose how long you need it for. Ready Rent a Car offers daily, weekly, weekend and longer-term hire, making it possible to arrange transport around individual circumstances. Whether it’s a van for a day, a car for a weekend away or something for several weeks, there are options to suit different requirements. As a long-established, family-run business, Ready Rent a Car places importance on offering a personal service. The team can

talk through the available vehicles and hire arrangements, helping customers find something suitable for their needs and budget. With depots serving Grimsby, Hull, Lincoln, Scunthorpe and Doncaster, the company is well placed to help customers across the region, whether they’re arranging transport in advance or looking for a solution to an unexpected problem. If you’re planning a longer journey over the winter months, it’s also worth allowing a little extra time and keeping an eye on the weather forecast. Roads can be particularly busy around Christmas, and being prepared for changing conditions can help make the journey more comfortable. Whether it’s visiting family, getting away for a few days, keeping a business running or simply making sure everyday life continues as normal, having access to the right vehicle can make all the difference.
