Newly refurbished classrooms and facilities at Grimsby’s Fairfield Academy impressed attendees at an opening event last week.

The renovated area of the David Ross Education Trust (DRET) school has benefitted from funding and support provided by North East Lincolnshire Council to develop a specialist provision for children with additional needs.
Named The Emerald Hub, the site will offer support for 18-students who each have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and a primary need of communication and interaction.
Resource Specialist Provisions (RSP) like this one are being developed across the number of local school sites, enabling children with additional needs to remain in – or close to – mainstream education whilst receiving extra support tailored to their needs.
An official opening event took place on Tuesday evening, bringing together school staff and members of DRET along with Councillors and key officers from North East Lincolnshire Council. Also in attendance was the Worshipful the Mayor of the Borough of North East Lincolnshire, Councillor Marian Boyd.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Children and Education at North East Lincolnshire Council, Councillor Samuel Grice, said he was delighted to see the new facilities open.
“It’s fantastic to see these new facilities firsthand. I’m really impressed with the work that has been done to bring what was a redundant part of the school back into use, for the benefit of more students.

“All children deserve to learn in a local setting that can fully meet their needs so they can fulfil their potential, enjoy learning and thrive.”
“I’m delighted that this latest RSP is completed and ready to welcome students. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all those from North East Lincolnshire Council, Fairfield Academy, the David Ross Education Trust, and Topcon Building Limited for their work to make these plans a reality.”
Simon Rose, CEO at DRET, said: “We are delighted that Fairfield Academy can now provide bespoke provision for children who need additional support. This has been a brilliant joint venture working together with the council, and we are very grateful to all of those who have made the Emerald Hub a reality.
“All children deserve to learn in a local setting that can fully meet their needs so that they can fulfil their potential, enjoy learning and thrive.”
Kimberley Lawton, Executive Director of Primary at DRET, said: “It is brilliant to see this space newly refurbished and serving the children so well.
“Thank you to the council and all involved. The Emerald Hub is clearly already making a huge difference and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for the children and their families.”
The work has been carried out by Topcon Building Ltd, working with North East Lincolnshire Council.
Under the government’s new SEND Reform programme, RSPs will become Inclusion Bases and this type of base will become known as a Specialist Base because it has been funded through the Local Authority using Department for Education grant funding and focuses on support for a specific area of need.

Residents and community supporters came together for an afternoon of fundraising at the Mayor of North East Lincolnshire’s Garden Party, raising an impressive £964 for her chosen charities, Bob’s Brainwaves and the RNLI.

Bob’s Brainwaves is a charity offering support and advice to those who are suffering or have family members who have been diagnosed with dementia. Founder Chris Suich began the charity after her husband, Bob, was diagnosed with the condition himself.
RNLI is a national charity that helps save lives at sea. They do this through life boat search and rescue, lifeguards, water safety and education.
Hosted by the Mayor, Cllr Marian Boyd, the Garden Party was well attended and provided guests with the opportunity to enjoy refreshments and good company in a relaxed garden setting, all while supporting two worthwhile causes.
The Mayor thanked everyone who attended, volunteered and donated, helping to make the event such a success.
She said: “I am delighted that our Garden Party was so well supported by residents, local organisations and friends. It was a fantastic afternoon enjoyed by all and I would like to thank everyone who contributed so generously.
“Raising £964 for Bob’s Brainwaves and the RNLI is a wonderful achievement and will help support the invaluable work carried out by both charities.”

WWII veterans, senior RAF commanders and cadets gathered to celebrate the sixth International Bomber Command Day at the International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC) in Lincoln on Thursday (23rd July).

Bottom right image: Bertram Hammond (101) from near Sleaford, Lincolnshire who flew 30 operations as an air gunner with 514 Squadron during WWII.

This years’ service of remembrance was even more poignant as it also marked the division’s 90th anniversary.
Organised by the IBCC, the annual service of remembrance provides an opportunity for the RAF community and the wider public to remember the sacrifices made by the 58,000 men and women who lost their lives during the Second World War.
Speaking about the event, Nicky Van Der Drift, Chief Executive of the IBCC, said:
“International Bomber Command Day honours the courage, sacrifice and resilience of everyone who served with Bomber Command throughout its history.
“This anniversary provides an opportunity to remember not only those who flew operational sorties, but also the thousands who supported those operations on the ground.
“Many never returned home. We remember them, their families and all those who continue to preserve their legacy.
“The International Bomber Command Centre provides a powerful place for remembrance, recognition, reconciliation and education.”
Air Marshall Allan Marshall added: “Ninety years ago this year, Bomber Command was formed. What followed was one of the most remarkable and costly campaigns in the history of air power. The statistics merit repeating. Almost a million men and women served or supported the Command, drawn from over 60 nations. Of the 125,000 aircrew - over 55,000 never came home.
“I think it’s fair to say that Bomber Command veterans at the end of the

Second World War were treated slightly differently to some of the other veterans. That has been changed since and I think everything we can do to recognise their service and their sacrifice is hugely important.”
During the ceremony, 55 wreaths were laid by the RAF, veterans, associations and youth organisations. There were flypasts by a Dakota and three Typhoons as well as poems and readings by guests and IBCC trustees including Chairman of the IBCC Air Chief Marshall Sir Michael Graydon GCB CBE and Losses Archivist Dave Gilbert.
The Bomber County Pipes and Drums lead the standard bearers from the IBBC centre to the Memorial Spire and there were musical performances from the Mansfield and District Male Voice Choir and the trumpeter of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force Band who played the Last Post.
Representatives from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) also attended with the Torch of Peace, a symbol of

remembrance and hope which represents the enduring responsibility to carry forward the memory of all those who died in the World Wars.
Following the service, invited evening guests were treated to a drinks reception, a sunset ceremony and an evening meal sponsored by DEA Ltd.
Bertram Hammond (101), who flew 30 operations as an air gunner with 514 Squadron during WWII, said the ceremony was about remembering those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom we enjoy today.
“Today is about the lads who never made it back,” he explained.
“Just under 50% never made it and they must be remembered. They are who I am representing here today, what this service is all about and what this centre is all about – remembering Bomber Command losses.”
If you’re interested in finding out more about the men and women who served in the unit, the IBCC has been protecting and preserving documents photographs of the era and recordings of interviews with those involved in a digital archive.

Barton-upon-Humber is now home to two Green Flag parks after the Humber Bridge Viewing Area joined the award-winning Baysgarth Park in receiving the prestigious national accolade.
The Humber Bridge Viewing Area has secured the prestigious national award for the first time, giving the town two parks recognised among the country’s best.
Across North Lincolnshire, five parks and green spaces have been recognised this year, with Central Park, Jubilee Park and Woodlands Memorial Gardens also receiving Green Flag status.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “For Barton to have two Green Flag parks is something the town can be incredibly proud of.
“Baysgarth Park has long been recognised as one of the area’s finest parks and it’s fantastic to see the Humber Bridge Viewing Area now joining it with the same national recognition.
“These awards don’t happen by accident. They reflect years of investment by the council, the hard work of our parks teams and the commitment of local volunteers who help care for these special places.
“Whether people want somewhere to walk, play, exercise or simply enjoy some time outdoors, these parks make Barton an even better place to live and visit.”
The Humber Bridge Viewing Area has become one of North Lincolnshire’s most popular visitor destinations, offering panoramic views across the Humber

alongside walking routes, picnic areas and open green space beneath one of the world’s most iconic bridges.
Baysgarth Park continues to attract families, walkers and visitors throughout the year with its landscaped gardens, play facilities, historic setting and links to Baysgarth House Museum.
“Having two Green Flag parks demonstrates the quality of green spaces Barton has to offer.”

Paul Vickers is a Barton ward member and chair of the Friends of Baysgarth Park group. He said: “This is excellent news for Barton. Having two Green Flag parks demonstrates the quality of green spaces the town has to offer.
“I want to thank the Friends of Baysgarth Park and the volunteers who support our parks. Their dedication makes a real difference and has played an important part in achieving this recognition.”
Across North Lincolnshire, five parks and green spaces have now achieved Green Flag status, recognising the high standards of management, maintenance and community involvement that help make them outstanding places to visit.
This year’s awards also mark the 30th anniversary of the Green Flag Award scheme, managed by Keep Britain Tidy on behalf of the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

this summer
Explore one of Britain’s most magical country estates over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
One of Lincolnshire’s most spectacular historic estates has announced it will once again welcome visitors this August Bank Holiday as Harlaxton Manor’s popular Summer Open House returns.

Taking place on Sunday 30th and Monday 31st August, the Summer Open House offers a rare opportunity for the public to peek behind the curtain at one of the county’s most fascinating and elusive estates. Guests are invited to explore the magnificent Grade I listed manor, wander through its formal gardens and experience the grandeur of one of the country’s most extraordinary historic houses.
Built in 1831 as an awe-inspiring home for Nottinghamshire businessman Gregory Gregory, the manor has also served as a training ground and an officers’ mess during the two world wars, and as a training centre for Jesuit priests. The manor is now the British campus of the University of Evansville, based in Indiana, and is open to visitors on specific dates throughout the year.
The upcoming open house allows visitors an irresistible opportunity to discover the estate’s ornate interiors, breathtaking mixture of architectural styles and beautifully maintained grounds at their own pace. Traditional lawn games and light refreshments, including a Pimms station and a summer barbecue, will also be available throughout the weekend.
Bethan Watson, Events Manager at Harlaxton Manor, said: “We are absolutely

delighted to once again welcome visitors to Harlaxton Manor for our Summer Open House this upcoming August Bank Holiday. It is always a pleasure to share this remarkable estate with the public and give people the opportunity to experience the history, architecture and beautiful surroundings that make the manor so incredibly special.

From exploring our magnificent interiors and strolling through the gardens to relaxing with live music throughout the day, we hope families, friends and history buffs will make a day of it and create lasting memories steeped in splendour under the late summer sun.”

Situated just off the A1 near the borders of Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire, this year’s Summer Open House will feature live performances from the Nottingham vocalist and musician duo Maia & John, whose expressive vocals, accomplished guitar playing and decade of live performance experience make them a popular choice for weddings and events across the region. They will be joined by classically trained pianist Bill Kibby, who will provide an uplifting soundtrack for visitors as they explore the manor and its grounds.
Built in 1831, Harlaxton Manor is renowned for its remarkable blend of Elizabethan, Jacobean and Baroque architecture as well as its fascinating history. The manor’s remarkable cast of former custodians has helped establish it as one of Britain’s most distinctive
country houses and a sought-after venue for weddings, events and film productions, including Amazon Prime’s Citadel and the 1999 cult classic horror film, The Haunting.
With free on-site parking, tickets cost £16 for adults, £13 for concessions (65+) and £8.50 for children aged 2 to 16. Meanwhile, family tickets for two adults and up to three children are available for £45. Children under two go free. Advance booking is recommended.

Simon Wright was born in West Yorkshire in 1974.

From as early as he can remember, Simon has always been drawing and painting, to the extent that he has called it his sole passion all his life.
After gaining a degree as an illustrator Simon began to realise that he enjoyed fine art painting instead as it didn’t have the same restraints as illustrative work.
While he started his career, to great success, painting animals, Simon also started doing portraiture work. Today, while he continues to paint animals,

Simon focuses on cityscapes, enjoying the contrast between the structure of the buildings and the constant changes of the people who live within them and the nature that grows with them. He has also recently begun to experiment with seascapes and boats, exploring texture in order to express the power of the ocean.
While he primarily works in oils, Simon will also work with acrylic paints, whichever medium is needed to achieve the effect he is searching for.

Making the decision to explore care for yourself or someone you love is one of life’s most significant milestones. It often comes after many conversations, careful thought and a desire to ensure the best quality of life. While the process can feel overwhelming at first, taking time to understand the options can help families approach the decision with greater confidence and peace of mind.

Care has changed considerably over the years. Modern care homes are no longer simply places that provide support; they are welcoming communities where comfort, companionship and independence are at the heart of everyday life. Thoughtfully designed living spaces, attractive gardens and communal areas create an environment where residents can continue enjoying routines, friendships and activities that bring happiness and purpose.
Understanding the different types of care is an important first step. Residential care provides help with day-to-day living, while nursing care offers clinical support for those with more complex needs. Many homes also
provide specialist dementia care, with trained teams creating calm, familiar surroundings that help residents feel safe. For families caring for loved ones at home, short-term respite care provides valuable support, allowing carers to recharge while knowing their loved one is receiving professional care.
Choosing a care home is about much more than comparing facilities. Visiting in person allows families to experience the atmosphere, meet the team and see how residents spend their day. Watching interactions between staff and residents, exploring the gardens and communal spaces, and asking questions about daily life often provides a clearer picture than any brochure could.
“The right care is about more than support: it is about comfort, companionship and continuing to enjoy life with confidence.”

Equally important is the lifestyle a home can offer. From shared mealtimes and gentle exercise classes to gardening, music and creative activities, opportunities to stay active and socially engaged can make a real difference to wellbeing. These everyday moments help residents maintain a sense of purpose, form new friendships and remain connected to the world around them.
Many newly built care homes are also embracing sustainable design. Energyefficient buildings, accessible outdoor spaces and carefully planned environments help create comfortable surroundings for both residents and future generations.
Ultimately, the right care is about preserving dignity, encouraging independence and helping people continue to enjoy life in a safe, supportive environment. By visiting different homes, asking questions and involving loved ones wherever possible, families can feel reassured they are making a decision that offers comfort, companionship and peace of mind for the years ahead.
Families across Lincoln and the surrounding villages will soon have a new choice when it comes to high-quality care, as Southcote Lodge Care Home opens its doors in Nettleham this Autumn.
Purpose-built to provide residential, dementia and respite care, Southcote Lodge has been thoughtfully designed to offer comfort, independence and a true sense of home. The new care home features 65 spacious en-suite bedrooms across three floors, with welcoming communal spaces where residents can relax, socialise and enjoy daily life.
Residents will have access to a range of modern facilities, including a bistro café, traditional pub, private dining room, entertainment suite, hair salon, elegant lounge and dining areas, as well as beautifully landscaped gardens surrounding the home on three sides. Daily activities, freshly prepared meals and a dedicated care team will help residents continue doing the things they enjoy while building new friendships.

The home has also been thoughtfully designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating solar panels and a ground source heat pump system to help reduce its environmental impact. Bat and swift boxes have also been incorporated into the landscaping to encourage local wildlife and to create peaceful outdoor spaces for everyone to enjoy.
Leading the new home is Home Manager Adam Atkin, who has lived in Lincoln all his life and understands how important it is for local families to find outstanding care close to home. Adam brings a wealth of experience, having worked across several Country Court homes since joining the organisation in 2018. He is looking forward to welcoming residents and becoming part of the Nettleham community.
If you or a loved one are beginning to explore care options, now is the perfect time to arrange a visit. Touring the home is a great opportunity to meet the team, explore the facilities and find out more about the care and support available.

Whether you’re upsizing, downsizing or simply looking for a fresh start, moving home is one of life’s biggest milestones. While the legal process takes place behind the scenes, a little preparation beforehand can help your property stand out and make the journey to your next home feel much smoother.

Moving home is about far more than packing boxes. It marks the beginning of a new chapter, bringing the excitement of fresh opportunities alongside a long list of practical tasks. Whether you’re moving just a few miles away or starting afresh somewhere completely new, taking time to prepare your home before it goes on the market can make a real difference.
Late summer is often the perfect time to begin the moving process. Homes and gardens are usually looking their very best, while longer daylight hours help showcase living spaces and outdoor areas. By starting the process now, there’s every chance that, if everything progresses smoothly, you’ll be settled into your new home well before Christmas, leaving you free to enjoy the festive season without the upheaval of a move.
First impressions count. Potential buyers often form an opinion within moments of arriving, making kerb appeal one of the simplest ways to enhance your home’s appeal. A neatly mown lawn, well-maintained borders, clean pathways and freshly painted gates or fences all help create a welcoming entrance. Even
simple touches, such as seasonal pots by the front door or neatly trimmed hedges, can make a lasting impression.
“When a home feels bright, welcoming and well cared for, buyers can begin to imagine their own story unfolding there.”
Inside, presenting rooms as bright, spacious and welcoming allows buyers to picture themselves living there. Decluttering worktops, tidying shelves and storing away personal items helps showcase the space rather than the possessions within it. Carefully chosen furniture and accessories can add warmth and character while ensuring each room feels open and inviting.
The garden is equally important, particularly during the summer

months when outdoor living is high on many buyers’ wish lists. Sweeping patios, refreshing planting and creating comfortable seating areas can highlight the garden as an extension of the home. Whether it’s a peaceful spot for a morning coffee or somewhere to enjoy family barbecues with friends, an attractive outdoor space helps buyers imagine making memories of their own.
While presentation plays an important role, the legal side of moving is just as significant. Instructing an experienced conveyancing solicitor early, gathering important paperwork and responding promptly to enquiries can help transactions progress as smoothly as possible, reducing delays and providing reassurance throughout the process.
Ultimately, buyers are investing in more than bricks and mortar. They are imagining a future and a lifestyle. By presenting your home at its very best and planning ahead for every stage of the move, you can approach your next chapter with confidence and give yourself the best possible chance of a successful sale.

Dating back to circa 1770, The Grange is an exceptional Grade II-listed family home offering around 3,700 sq ft of elegant accommodation.
Approached via a gated gravel driveway, the property creates a striking first impression. Passing a tranquil pond and the neighbouring Grade I-listed St Nicolas Church, the approach reveals a home rich in heritage and surrounded by peace and privacy. The elegant Georgian frontage remains discreetly hidden from the driveway, while mature Virginia creeper transforms the exterior from vibrant green to spectacular shades of ruby red each autumn.
Occupying the site of a medieval manor with remnants of the original moat still visible, The Grange combines historic significance with an idyllic setting. Mature trees frame the property, creating a wonderful sense of seclusion while remaining exceptionally well connected.
Internally, the home is filled with natural light from large Georgian sash windows, with every room enjoying views across the gardens. The kitchen and breakfast room forms the heart of the home, centred around a magnificent fireplace with a traditional enamelled multi-fuel stove.
Three elegant reception rooms each offer their own character and period features. The formal dining room flows into a refined sitting room with a

Portland Stone fireplace and multi-fuel stove, while the spacious living room features a Portuguese Estremoz marble fireplace with Jetmaster gas fire and opens into a sun lounge with direct access to the south-facing patio. A handsome study with a bay window and Ancaster Stone fireplace provides an ideal home office or reading room.
Beneath the house lies a fascinating brick

barrel-roofed wet cellar, believed to predate the property by around 100 years.
Upstairs are five substantial double bedrooms, including an impressive principal bedroom that could easily be divided to create an additional bedroom if required. The luxurious main bathroom features a Victoria + Albert bath, walk-in shower and twin wash basins,

“Historic character, secluded grounds and beautifully proportioned living spaces make The Grange a truly exceptional family home.”

complemented by a separate family shower room with a Matki walk-in shower.
Outside, the grounds are mainly laid to lawn with seating areas positioned to enjoy the sun throughout the day. The orchard offers potential for a tennis court, swimming pool or both, subject to the necessary permissions. A detached double garage with workshop, wood store and garden store complements the property, together with parking for six or more vehicles.
Although not included within the sale, an adjacent four-acre plot on the southern boundary may be available by separate negotiation.
The Grange is ideally positioned for modern family life. Great Coates offers local amenities, schools, shops and a nearby pub within walking distance, while Grimsby town centre is just ten minutes away. The A180 provides excellent transport links, with the Lincolnshire Wolds and coastline both within easy reach.
The tenure is Freehold and the property falls within Band G for North East Lincolnshire Council Tax.
Viewing is strictly by appointment only.
A rare opportunity to acquire a truly distinguished Lincolnshire residence, The Grange effortlessly combines period grandeur, privacy and lifestyle appeal in one remarkable home.

Classic vehicle auctions are another important part of the calendar. Spicers holds three Classic Car, Motorcycle and Automobilia auctions each year, which set against their unique backdrop, have become popular and very well attended events attracting enthusiasts from around the country, with a wide range of vehicles including tractors and boats as well as the expected classics going under the hammer.
While the atmosphere of a live auction remains at the heart of the business, technology now allows buyers to take part from wherever they are. Auctions are streamed through online bidding platforms, with internet buyers accounting for more than 80% of lots sold, giving bidders from around the world the opportunity to participate.
For those considering selling, Spicers offers free valuations for individual items, collections and house clearances, with guidance available throughout the process. Whether you’re buying, selling or simply interested in discovering what comes under the hammer next, a visit to the Waterways Salerooms offers a fascinating insight into the world of auctions and the stories behind the many items that pass through its doors.

There is something special about gathering friends and family together on a warm August afternoon. The lovely warm weather enjoyed throughout much of the summer has provided the perfect opportunity to enjoy relaxed barbecues, outdoor dining and celebrations in the garden. With a little planning, you can create a welcoming space while making the most of Lincolnshire’s excellent local produce.
A successful barbecue starts with quality ingredients. Lincolnshire is renowned for locally reared meats, fresh vegetables and seasonal fruit. No Lincolnshire barbecue would feel complete without the county’s famous Lincolnshire sausages. Visiting a local butcher or farm shop is a great way to discover fresh produce while supporting independent businesses.
Today’s barbecues offer far more than burgers and sausages. Marinated chicken, grilled vegetables, seafood skewers and vegetarian dishes all cook beautifully outdoors. Fresh salads and seasonal berries provide the perfect finishing touch.

Creating a comfortable outdoor dining space is just as important as the food. Comfortable seating, shade and simple touches such as lanterns or festoon lighting can transform any garden into an inviting place to relax well into the evening.
If you are upgrading your barbecue or running low on gas, Lincolnshire’s specialist outdoor living retailers
“Good food, great company and a welcoming garden are all that is needed to create lasting summer memories.”
stock a wide range of barbecues, patio gas cylinders and accessories, together with expert advice to help you prepare for summer entertaining.
Preparing food in advance means you can spend more time enjoying your guests, while sharing platters and a self-serve drinks station make entertaining simple.
Although the warm weather has made outdoor dining a pleasure this summer, British weather can be unpredictable. A gazebo or covered seating area provides welcome shelter should the weather change, while a fire pit or outdoor heater helps extend the evening once the sun goes down.
Always position barbecues well away from fences and buildings, keep children and pets at a safe distance, and never leave a lit barbecue unattended.
As August draws to a close, outdoor dining is the perfect way to make the most of the season. Whether you are serving Lincolnshire favourites or family classics, good food, great company and a welcoming garden are all that is needed to create lasting summer memories.

August brings a mellow, glowing beauty to the garden. The frenetic growth of spring and early summer eases, and plants settle into a slower rhythm. Borders are at their most atmospheric now, with grasses shimmering, seedheads forming and late summer perennials taking centre stage. Warm evenings stretch long into dusk, the vegetable patch overflows, and the whole garden feels content, mature and abundant.
Yet beneath the calm lies an important truth: August rewards small, timely actions. A little attention now prevents borders from fading and prepares the garden beautifully for autumn.
Borders: Late-Summer Colour at Its Best Heleniums, echinacea, phlox, crocosmia, rudbeckia and dahlias come into full power in August. To keep borders looking their best, deadhead generously. Removing spent blooms extends flowering, keeps plants fresh and encourages continued growth— especially on dahlias, cosmos, phlox and roses. Cut back early-summer perennials such as hardy geraniums, campanulas and nepeta to encourage fresh foliage and occasional rebloom.
Many tall perennials can become top-heavy after summer rain. Use discreet stakes or hoops to support drooping stems. In dry gardens, apply a light mulch to help retain soil moisture without smothering new growth.
If you notice gaps in your borders, August is the perfect time to assess them. Photographs or quick sketches now will guide smarter decisions when planning autumn planting.
Roses and Shrubs:
Gentle Summer Maintenance
Roses continue flowering beautifully in August, particularly repeat-flowering varieties. Maintain their display with consistent deadheading, a final light feed and deep watering during dry spells. Shrubs need relatively little attention now, though you can clip lightly to neaten growth—avoiding hot days to reduce stress on the plant.
The Vegetable Garden:
Peak Harvest Season
August is one of the most rewarding months in the vegetable patch. Courgettes, tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, sweetcorn, peppers and soft fruit reach their peak.

Harvest them regularly, as frequent picking encourages continued production. Water deeply to maintain crop quality and reduce stress during hot spells.
You can still sow late batches of salads, radishes, beetroot and dwarf beans for harvests well into autumn. Once garlic and onion foliage has turned yellow, lift and cure the bulbs in a warm, dry place. Stay vigilant for potato and tomato blight; remove infected foliage immediately and avoid overhead watering to limit its spread.
Lawns: Adjusting to Summer Heat
August lawns often struggle with heat and limited rainfall. Rather than striving for a perfect green carpet, adjust expectations. Raise the mower blade to allow longer grass that shades and protects the roots. Water only during extended drought, aiming for occasional deep soakings rather than frequent light watering.
Supporting Wildlife in High Summer
Butterflies, bees and hoverflies are at their most active in August. Plants like verbena bonariensis, sedum, lavender, oregano and knapweed provide essential nectar. Keep birdbaths topped up and offer shallow, shaded water dishes for hedgehogs and

other nocturnal visitors. Small wildlifefriendly gestures make a meaningful difference at this time of year.
A Month to Pause and Appreciate August invites you to slow down and enjoy your garden’s richness. Whether you’re gathering cut flowers, picking tomatoes still warm from the sun or enjoying the evening scent of tobacco plants and phlox, this is a month to relish. With gentle care, thoughtful watering and a few timely tasks, your garden will glow beautifully as summer begins its gradual slide into autumn.

There is something particularly special about gardens in August. The rush of early summer has eased, borders are full and mature, and the softer light of late summer brings a different kind of beauty to outdoor spaces. Across Lincolnshire, gardens are at their most established, with flowers, foliage and wildlife combining to create a landscape full of colour and life.
While many spring blooms have faded, August is far from the end of the gardening season. In fact, some of the garden’s most striking displays are only just reaching their peak. Dahlias continue to provide spectacular colour, while asters, sedums, hydrangeas and ornamental grasses add texture and interest that will last well into autumn. Refreshing pots and containers with late-season flowering plants is an easy way to brighten patios, entrances and seating areas without undertaking a complete redesign.

August is also an ideal month for planning ahead. Collecting seeds from favourite flowers is a rewarding way to prepare for next year, while making notes of successful planting combinations can help inspire future garden projects. It’s also a good time to think about where spring bulbs might be planted later in the year, ensuring gardens continue to evolve with each passing season.
“From vibrant flowers to visiting wildlife, August is one of the most rewarding months to spend time in the garden.”

Wildlife remains an important part of the late summer garden. Bees, butterflies and hoverflies are still busy gathering nectar before autumn arrives, while dragonflies can often be spotted around ponds and damp areas. Swallows and house martins continue to fill the skies as they prepare for their remarkable journeys south, reminding us that the seasons are slowly beginning to change.
Gardeners can make a real difference by allowing nature to flourish. Leaving a few seed heads standing provides food for birds later in the year, while a small log pile or undisturbed corner creates valuable shelter for insects and other garden visitors. Fresh, shallow water is equally important during warm weather, offering birds, bees and hedgehogs a safe place to drink.
Whether you have a compact town garden, a traditional cottage border or a larger rural space, August is the perfect time to simply enjoy being outdoors. As evenings become a little cooler and the colours of the garden begin their gentle transition towards autumn, there is still plenty to appreciate. A little thought now, combined with a welcome for local wildlife, will help ensure your garden remains beautiful, thriving and full of interest for many weeks to come.

Looking
after your vehicle throughout the year is one of the most effective ways to improve reliability, maintain performance and help avoid unexpected repair costs.
Modern vehicles are built to exceptionally high standards, but even the most reliable models require regular maintenance to keep them performing at their best. Routine servicing allows technicians to identify worn components before they develop into more significant problems, helping motorists avoid unnecessary expense and inconvenience.
Many drivers only visit a garage when a warning light appears or a fault develops. However, preventative maintenance can often detect issues much earlier. Regular inspections of brakes, tyres, suspension, batteries, steering and air conditioning systems all contribute to safer, more efficient motoring while helping to preserve the long-term value of a vehicle.
Keeping on top of scheduled maintenance can also improve fuel efficiency and reduce unnecessary wear on key components. Simple checks carried out during routine servicing can highlight minor issues

before they affect the performance of the vehicle, allowing repairs to be completed at a more convenient time. As the seasons change, ensuring tyres, batteries and cooling systems are working correctly can provide additional peace of mind, particularly for motorists planning longer journeys or relying on their vehicle every day.
Today’s cars also rely on increasingly sophisticated electronic systems. Professional diagnostic equipment enables technicians to communicate directly with a vehicle’s onboard computers, quickly identifying faults and providing accurate information to support effective repairs. This not only saves valuable time but also helps ensure problems are resolved correctly the first time.
Based in Tetney, Lincs VWA provides specialist servicing, repairs, diagnostics and MOT testing for Volkswagen Audi Group vehicles, supporting
motorists across Grimsby, Cleethorpes and the surrounding area. With extensive experience working on Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Škoda models, the family-owned business combines technical expertise with a friendly, customer-focused approach.
Alongside routine servicing, the team carries out engine diagnostics, MOTs and repairs to brakes, suspension, exhausts, clutches and air conditioning systems, providing comprehensive vehicle care under one roof. Whether it’s scheduled maintenance or resolving a mechanical fault, having access to experienced technicians and the correct diagnostic equipment helps keep vehicles running safely and efficiently.
By offering a wide range of servicing and repair solutions from its Tetney garage, Lincs VWA continues to support motorists throughout North East Lincolnshire, helping local drivers keep their vehicles reliable, well maintained and ready for every journey.

Using modern diagnostic equipment, technicians can quickly identify faults and resolve issues efficiently, helping customers avoid unnecessary costs and keeping vehicles safely on the road. Here
are
three simple checks Lincoln drivers should make before heading for the sunshine
With increasing flight prices and ongoing delays at airports meaning foreign destinations are harder to get to, a record 77% of sun-seekers are choosing to embark on a summer staycation in 2026 instead*.

With road users looking to explore the best that the UK has to offer, a Volvo car retailer in Lincoln is offering their top tips for drivers to ensure their cars are as ready for a holiday as they are.
Andy McInnes, from Stoneacre Lincoln on Lincoln Fields, said: “For any British holiday, there’s one essential detail that often gets overlooked – the car.
“It’s vital to check whether your car is fit for a long journey and ensure you have all the essentials to avoid any unpleasant surprises.”
1. Check the condition of your car
“No matter how far you’re travelling, it is a good idea to regularly check your car. It may seem like common sense, but make sure the car has plenty of fuel, the oil and coolant have been topped up recently, the tyres are safely inflated, and all the electrics are working.
“Ensure you check the car’s lights and replace any bulbs that aren’t working or seem dim. This is particularly important if
you plan to set off early in the morning or late at night, when the visibility is reduced.
“One thing that is easily overlooked is checking the wheel nut key is stored safely in the car. Store it in a safe, accessible place – without it, even basic maintenance like changing a tyre can become difficult.”
2. Test the battery
“Summer heat can be even tougher on car batteries than a winter frost. It’s wise to check your car battery, as temperature changes – especially in the summer – it can significantly affect its performance. Hot weather can accelerate battery degradation by trapping heat under the bonnet, causing the liquid inside to evaporate more quickly and potentially leading to a flat battery.
“Car batteries typically last between three and five years. To avoid a breakdown, it’s essential to check your battery’s condition, especially if your car is a few years old and regularly exposed to intense summer heat as it has had to work much harder over a prolonged period of time.

“For any British holiday, there’s one essential detail that often gets overlooked –the car.”
3. Plan the journey and ensure your technology is ready
“For electric vehicle drivers, technology can play an even bigger role in journey planning. Checking charging locations in advance and using apps to monitor charger availability can help avoid unnecessary detours and keep your trip running smoothly.
“If you’re visiting a destination that is unfamiliar to you, make sure your car’s sat-nav system has recently been updated to avoid missing new road layouts. If you use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, make sure any charging cables are packed and your route has been downloaded in case you encounter areas with limited mobile signal.
“If you rely on a smartphone for navigation, check that your apps are fully updated and that voice guidance is enabled, reducing the need to look at the screen while driving.”
“For those who would like to cover all their bases, locals in Lincoln can book in for a health check with us before their staycation.”
