STUDENTS PLAY KEY ROLE IN PIER GARDENS REGENERATION

“I went to Pier Gardens with my mum and can’t wait for it to be reopened knowing I helped create something” – Cleethorpes schoolgirls help regeneration plans

A group of schoolgirls have had their input into the ongoing regeneration in Pier Gardens.

The group of 12 from Cleethorpes Academy took part in a design workshop as part of the Pier Gardens Interactive Art Trail. Ultimately, it all feeds in to the larger regeneration projects going on all around Cleethorpes, creating a more welcoming, modern and safe space for residents and visitors.

As part of this, Hemingway Designs have produced plans to install large structures spelling out the resort’s name in different themes linked to Cleethorpes, with each letter being placed around the gardens themselves. It’s hoped they will encourage people to explore and interact with the area whilst visiting Cleethorpes.

Helping design the letter O and the seating around it – which will be situated between the skate area and water play – they studied the Victorian Heritage of the area, incorporating elements to make it feel safer and welcoming for women and girls.

This included making it fully accessible and placing the O in an open space near plants and flowers. To formulate their design, the group created a selection of tiles which exhibited their initial thoughts and ideas.

For many, the chance to be part of something new was a great reason to be involved. Ellie, 14, said: “I think the design workshop was fun and I am looking forward to being part of the design.

“I used to go to Pier Gardens with my mum and I can’t wait for it to be opened knowing I helped create something.”

Mal, also 14, added: “It’s been fun working as a team and designing something with my friends.

“I’m excited for Pier Gardens to open now. I didn’t go very often before but I am going to go

more once it opens – I’ll definitely be taking my mum there to show her the designs we’ve made.”

For their teacher, Mrs. Weatherley, the regeneration works are a real positive for the resort. She said: “I’m really excited about the plans. It will be good for the kids and it give them something to be proud of.

“The art trail will be good for families and it’s great that local people are involved in the design, encouraging ownership. The whole area looks exciting and I can’t wait to see the finished article.”

REVESBY COUNTRY FAIR SUPPORTS YOUNG PEOPLE WITH £1,000 BURSARY

The Revesby Rural Activities Fund can be used to access rural careers, skills and opportunities

Revesby Country Fair, a popular Lincolnshire day out, is supporting young people working in the countryside by offering grants of up to £1,000.

Young people up to the age of 25 who are living and working in Lincolnshire are invited to apply for funding through the Revesby Rural Activities Fund, a bursary scheme which supports access to rural careers, skills and opportunities.

The bursary aims to give young people the chance to participate in a wide range of rural activities, including traditional skills, crafts, gamekeeping and horticulture. Open to all applications, the scheme will consider any rural-based activity.

The bursary can be used to fund a variety of costs, such as travel, agricultural courses or placements,

driving or tractor licenses, towing qualifications and IT equipment.

John Roe, Chairman of Revesby Country Fair, said:

“We’re proud to be helping young people across Lincolnshire and expanding their opportunities through the Revesby Rural Activities Fund.

“Living in a rural area can sometimes make accessing training and opportunities more challenging, whether that’s due to travel, costs or availability. This bursary is designed to remove some of those barriers and encourage more young people to pursue careers and interests in the rural sector.

“Our goal is to support the next generation and boost rural skills and industries, so please get in touch if you’d like to apply.”

The Revesby Rural Activities Fund has already made a significant difference to previous recipients and allowed them to pursue their career aspirations.

Megan Smalley received support while studying for a Master’s degree in Veterinary Physiotherapy at the University of Nottingham. She said:

“I was so shocked to find out my grant application was successful, it has made all the difference to my studies. It has enabled me to attend university and facilitated the many placements I have to attend across the country in order to pass.

LINCS & NOTTS AIR AMBULANCE LAUNCHES SECOND HELICOPTER APPEAL

The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA) has officially launched a public appeal to help fund a second helicopter, which could save hundreds more lives every year.

The charity has already secured pledges and donations for most of the £7m needed and has booked its place on the production line. It’s now launching the Mission Possible 2 Appeal to raise the £500,000 needed to get the second helicopter in the air by late summer 2027.

For more than 30 years, the LNAA’s highly skilled crews have been by the side of thousands of critically ill and seriously injured patients, delivering advanced, highly specialised treatment and care.

However, over recent years demand for the service has increased by 135%, placing increasing pressure on the charity’s current resources. The average number of helicopter missions per day currently stands at five this year so far which is an increase from four last year.

Compared to the 21 different air ambulance charities across the UK, the LNAA covers the largest geographical area (3,500 square miles) with just one helicopter. There are now at least one to two major medical emergencies across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire every day

that LNAA cannot attend because it’s already deployed elsewhere.

A second helicopter would mean the LNAA’s crews could be by the side of hundreds more patients every year.

CEO Karen Jobling explained: “For more than three decades we’ve been there for patients and their families on some of the worst days of their lives, but the reality is that demand is now outgrowing what one helicopter can deliver.

“A second helicopter will mean we can reach around 400 additional patients every year and ensure more families get the chance to have their loved one return home.”

The new AW109 helicopter is expected to be operational in October 2027 – but public donations are vital to achieving that goal.

Several fundraising activities are already planned, including the Lincoln Dragon Boat Festival on 11th July, and the charity is now calling on

“I enjoy living in a rural area, but it has brought challenges in both commuting and financing attending university in another city. It is such a lovely idea to be helping those in rural communities; I am so grateful for the help of the grant.”

To find out more about the Revesby Rural Activities Fund and submit an application, visit www.revesbycountryfair.co.uk/revesbyrural-activities-fund/

The Revesby Rural Activities Fund is supported by ticket sales from Revesby Country Fair, which will take place this year on Sunday 2nd August.

Following a successful 2025 fair, trade stand applications and general public tickets are now live for this year’s show.

To apply for a trade stand at the 2026 show, visit www.revesbycountryfair.co.uk/tradestands/.

businesses to enter a team or sponsor the event.

Karen said every penny raised will bring the charity closer to making the impossible, possible.

“We’ve been incredibly fortunate to receive significant pledges and support from private funders already, but now we’re asking the people and communities of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire to help us get over the finish line and hit our £500,000 target,” said Karen.

“Every day there are major incidents happening but with one helicopter we can’t be in two places at once. That’s incredibly difficult because we know every call represents someone’s loved one.”

BG SOLICITORS LLP

LITIGATION AND PROBATE DISPUTES

The passing of a loved one can be a painful and difficult experience, and which can only be made worse by any disagreement over their will or their estate. Understandably, arguments over someone’s finances/property after they have passed can be one of the most difficult and painful disputes to engage in.

It is important those involved have legal advice from the outset and a pragmatic approach can stop an already difficult experience becoming harder.

It is standard belief in English Law that there is ‘testamentary freedom’ – the ability leave your money and property to who you like. However, there are areas that can become contentious during the estate process; from how the estate is being distributed, to the sale of homes.

Often concerns can arise from how the will was produced, or whether a party has been provided for within the will.

Questions in relation to the creation of a will can include concerns that the testator has made a mistake, lacked capacity (was not able to understand what they were doing), or there has been undue influence

(this means that someone seeking to benefit from the will had exerted influence over the testator to their benefit and others detriment). It may be that the will was not properly signed or witnessed or dealt with

dependence or interest in the estate.

This can include children of the deceased, long term cohabitees, other dependents - and particularly a spouse who has not had satisfactory provision. The court will consider factors including the finances of those involved, the amount in the estate and the needs of the party seeking provision.

It is important therefore due to the complexities involved in these claims, that you obtain legal advice.

At BG solicitors we can advise in relation to estate disputes, whether you are distressed by a lack of provision, a beneficiary defending a claim or an executor unsure of where to go. We can also help you understand the risks and benefits of challenging a will, and review the evidence

From arboretums to abbey ruins, “there is a real appetite for meaningful days out” at Revesby Estate

History lovers from across Lincolnshire are invited to discover the incredible stories behind Lincolnshire’s Revesby Estate through a new guided history walk this summer.

Hosted by historian Adrian Gray, the one-day-only event on Saturday 6th June will take guests on an immersive walking tour through some of the Revesby Estate’s most historic locations, before concluding with a sumptuous two-course summer lunch prepared by local caterers.

Beginning at the Estate’s park gates at 10am, guests will explore the Kangaroo Park, the site of the former home of the famed scientist, explorer and botanist

Sir Joseph Banks, and the restored Rose Arboretum, all while hearing terrific tales about the people and places that helped shape the Estate and village across generations.

The walk will also include visits to the Village Green and St Lawrence’s Church, a Victorian-decorated Gothic parish church built in 1891 by Charles Hodgson Fowler on the site of earlier Georgian and Norman churches, with strong links to the Banks and Stanhope families.

Following a welcome drink and light but indulgent summer lunch in the Village Hall, the afternoon continues with an exploration of the site of the original Revesby Abbey, a Cistercian abbey founded in 1142 as a daughter house of Rievaulx Abbey in Yorkshire.

The lunch will be prepared by local catering business Deli 2 Your Door. Run by Jane and Steve, who also sell Revesby Estate venison at Horncastle Market every Thursday

and Saturday, the eatery provides only the highest quality homemade dishes with grass-fed meats and fine foods.

Peter Wiggins-Davies, Owner of Revesby Estate, said: “Revesby has a rich and distinctive history, and we are proud to share it in a way that feels both welcoming and accessible.

“There is a real appetite for days out that offer something meaningful, where people can learn, experience a place properly, and enjoy good food and company at the same time. Our event on Saturday 6th June brings all of that together, with Adrian Gray sharing his knowledge and stories, followed by a summer lunch prepared by a local caterer. We hope visitors leave with a deeper understanding of Revesby’s story and a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable day.”

The history walk and summer lunch are expected to last approximately four and a half hours, with a walking distance of around three miles. Tickets cost just £30 per person, which includes a contribution towards the church and memorial project.

WILDLIFE, RESCUE AND FAMILY

FUN AT NATURELAND SEAL SANCTUARY

A visit to Natureland Seal Sanctuary offers far more than a traditional family day out. Located on North Parade in the heart of Skegness, the much-loved attraction combines education, conservation and fun while carrying out vital rescue work for seals along the Lincolnshire coastline.

The well known Skegness Seal Rescue Centre, Natureland’s primary focus is rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned, injured and unwell seal pups before releasing them back into the wild. Every year, between 60 and 70 pups are rescued, particularly during the busy harbour seal and grey seal pupping seasons. Many arrive weak, dehydrated or separated from their mothers, requiring specialist care from Natureland’s dedicated team.

Visitors can learn about every stage of the rehabilitation journey, from the Seal Hospital, where pups receive medical treatment and assisted feeding, through to the rehabilitation pools where they learn to swim, dive and catch fish independently. Once healthy and weighing enough to survive in the wild, the seals are

released back into the sea — a rewarding moment for staff and visitors alike.

Natureland is also home to a wide variety of animals and attractions, making it ideal for families whatever the weather. Guests can see playful seals, penguins, tropical butterflies, reptiles, fish, meerkats, goats, alpacas and much more during their visit. Feeding demonstrations take place throughout the day, giving visitors the chance to see the animals at their most active while learning more about their care and behaviours.

The attraction’s colourful exhibits and engaging displays create an enjoyable experience for children and adults alike, while also helping raise awareness of marine conservation and wildlife protection.

Conveniently located close to Skegness seafront, Natureland has become one of the resort’s most popular attractions for both tourists and local residents. Visitors can also take advantage of special offers and seasonal promotions, helping make a day out even more affordable for families.

Whether you are passionate about wildlife, looking for an educational family activity, or simply wanting to support an important cause, Natureland Seal Sanctuary offers a memorable experience with a meaningful purpose at its heart.

New for 2026! They have a brand new penguin pool and have welcomed 4 new flippered friends to join Popcorn and Pip!

BOMBER COUNTY GATEWAY TRUST

After a wet Autumn and winter, the remaining steel fastenings were completed on the structure, along with painting of the podium legs with thanks to the Witham group who supplied the paint.

The ground underneath the sculpture was landscaped with thanks to MCB Bros, British Sugar and Tillers turf who all came together to level the site and provide fresh soil and then lay fresh Lincolnshire turf over the site. This was completed in late April so that the area looked its best for the dedication weekend.

On the 15th May 2026, 360 sponsors, volunteers, and officials were invited to our dedication of “On Freedoms Wings”.

This service was conducted by The Rt.Revd.Dr.Nigel Peyton (Honorary Bishop Diocese of Lincoln) and the dedication plaque was unveiled by

(Hackney) Harry Parkins Flight Engineer 630 , 576 and 50 Squadrons who flew 47 operations and retuned home, for the Lancaster VN-N, which crashed on the 19th September 1942.

Harry was one of eight veterans that had been with us eight years to the day, when

we had our ground breaking ceremony back in 2018, with the most famous being George “Johnny” Johnson.

There were representatives of five of the seven crew that were in the Lancaster that crashed on the Friday with several families travelling from Australia to be with us. Music was provided throughout the service by “Peak Brass” and a piece of music written by Harry Male ,one of the crew that flew in VN-N, was played during the service.

The Saturday 16th May was a celebration day for the general public with a dedication service, for Bomber Command, performed by Rt Revd Peter

Hill Honorary Asst. Bishop Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham. The Newark & Sherwood Concert Band played through the day.

The Sunday 17th May was a general open day for the public with talks provided about the history of the Sculpture , the build of it, the crash and crew of VN-N and the impact “On Freedoms Wings” from a modern RAF perspective.

A parade of 1237 (North Hykeham) Squadron Air Cadets was performed on all three days and they were met on the first day by His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire Toby Dennis and by His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant

of Nottinghamshire Professor Veronica Pickering MBS HAC.

The weekend was a fantastic tribute to all that have helped get “On Freedoms Wings” into the air and was supported by the BBMF, who provide a flypast by a Hurricane on the Friday , a Hurricane and Spitfire on the Saturday and then a Spitfire on the Sunday

The site is still awaiting approval to use the carparking area and a new access off the highway needs to be created. It is hoped that this will enable the safe entry and exit for the public that want to come and see it up close. This is expected to be fully open later this year.

PLANNING A WEDDING THAT FEELS TRULY PERSONAL

Planning a wedding is one of those experiences that is both exciting and emotional in equal measure. It begins with a proposal, but very quickly turns into a journey filled with ideas, decisions and moments that slowly come together to create something meaningful and memorable.

Every couple approaches their wedding differently. Some dream of a large celebration surrounded by family and friends, while others prefer something smaller and more relaxed. What matters most now is less about following tradition and more about creating a day that feels personal and genuine.

For many couples, one of the first steps is choosing the engagement ring. It is far more than jewellery. It becomes part of the story, marking the beginning of everything that follows. Whether choosing a timeless design or something more modern and unique, couples are increasingly looking for pieces that reflect their personalities and relationship rather than simply following trends.

Once the excitement of the engagement settles, attention naturally turns to planning the day itself. Venues are often where the vision really begins to take shape. From elegant country settings to modern spaces and intimate locations, the venue helps create the atmosphere and feeling couples want their guests to remember.

individual. Tailoring, comfort and personal style are now just as important as tradition, with many couples wanting outfits that not only look good but also feel natural throughout the day.

Accessories often become some of the most memorable finishing touches. Jewellery, shoes, watches and ties can all help complete the overall look while adding personal meaning and individuality. It is often these details that guests notice most and that appear time and again in photographs long after the celebrations are over.

Of course, weddings are not only about appearances. Food, music and entertainment all help shape the atmosphere and bring people together. Whether it is a formal sit-down meal, live music in the evening or a relaxed outdoor reception, couples are increasingly focused on creating an enjoyable experience where guests feel comfortable and involved in the celebration.

As plans develop, the smaller details slowly start to matter just as much as the bigger decisions. Flowers, table settings, invitations and colour palettes all help bring personality to the celebration. These touches may seem small individually, but together they help create the overall look and feel of the day.

Fashion also plays a huge role in the experience. Bridalwear continues to evolve, blending classic elegance with modern styles, while men’s formalwear has become far more flexible and

With so many elements to organise, many couples continue to value the support of trusted local businesses throughout the process. From jewellers and florists to outfitters, photographers and venues, having experienced people to guide and advise can make planning feel less overwhelming.

At its heart, a wedding is about celebrating a relationship and creating moments that will be remembered for years to come. Trends and styles may change, but the most memorable weddings are often the ones filled with personality, warmth and thoughtful details that truly reflect the couple at the centre of it all.

Set on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, Oaklands Hall Hotel is one of the area’s premier wedding venues. Our beautiful hotel offers true distinction and style for your special day.

Our wedding spaces include the grand Churchill Suite, the perfect setting for a countryside wedding, overlooking the landscaped gardens and terrace. On the opposite side of the hotel sits the Garden Room, with its clean, modern décor, conservatory space and large open garden (licensed for outdoor civil ceremonies), making it an ideal choice for contemporary weddings.

Inside the oldest part of the hotel, dating back to 1877, is Long’s Lounge, boasting period features and providing an intimate setting for civil ceremonies and wedding breakfasts.

Step inside Oaklands Hall Hotel and make your wedding day that little bit more special. Beautiful settings, award-winning dining and flawless service.

THE MEANING BEHIND THE MOMENT

There are few moments in life that feel as special as an engagement. It is more than just a question being asked. It is a promise, a step forward and the start of a new chapter shared together. While every proposal is different, the meaning behind it remains the same, a commitment to a future built side by side.

At the centre of that moment is the ring. More than a piece of jewellery, it becomes a lasting symbol of love and intention. It is something worn every day, quietly reminding the wearer of a moment filled with emotion, excitement and hope. Over time, it becomes part of everyday life, carrying memories that grow more meaningful as the years go on.

In a world where trends change quickly, engagement rings hold onto a sense of tradition. They are not chosen lightly, and they are not meant to be replaced. Instead, they are selected with care, with the idea that they will last for years to come, both in style and in meaning. It is this sense of permanence that continues to make them so important. It is not about following fashion, but about choosing something that will still feel right years down the line.

Choosing the right ring, however, is not always straightforward. Today’s buyers have more choice than ever before.

From classic designs to more modern styles, from natural diamonds to lab grown options, there is a wide range of

possibilities to consider. For many, it is not just about appearance, but also about finding something that feels right on a personal level.

This is where experience and guidance make all the difference. A trusted jeweller can help take away some of the uncertainty, offering advice and reassurance along the way. Being able to see different styles, understand the options and ask questions in a relaxed setting can turn what feels like a big decision into an enjoyable experience. Taking the time to explore options properly can make the final choice feel even more meaningful.

For over a century, Segal’s Jewellers has been part of these important moments. As a long established, family run business, they have helped generations of couples find the perfect ring to mark their engagement. That experience brings with it a level of care and understanding that is hard to replicate.

One of the things that sets them apart is the variety they offer. With a collection

that includes new, second hand and antique rings, there is something to suit different tastes and preferences. Some are drawn to the character and history of an older piece, while others prefer the clean lines of a more modern design.

There is also the option to create something bespoke. Designing a ring from scratch, or reworking an existing piece, allows couples to add a personal touch and create something truly one of a kind.

An engagement ring is never just about the moment it is given. It is about everything that follows. Choosing it should feel just as special as the proposal itself, marking the beginning of a story that will continue for years to come.

SIP INTO SUMMER THE REFRESHING TEA BLENDS EVERYONE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THIS SEASON

As summer settles in and long afternoons stretch into golden evenings, our drinks choices become lighter, brighter and infinitely more refreshing. This year, iced teas are taking centre stage, offering all the sophistication of a crafted summer drink with the cooling ease we crave on warmer days.

Leading the trend are two beautifully distinctive blends from The Lincoln Tea & Coffee Company: the crisp and botanical G&Tea Blend and the vibrant, tropical-inspired Bird of Paradise Tea. Elegant, refreshing and bursting with character, these teas are made for summer sipping.

BOTANICAL BLISS: G&TEA BLEND

Inspired by the refreshing flavour profile of a classic gin and tonic, G&Tea Blend offers a modern and wonderfully sophisticated twist on iced tea. Light and aromatic with delicate botanical notes, it delivers all the elegance of a summer cocktail, completely alcohol-free.

Served over ice with a slice of lemon, cucumber ribbons or a fresh sprig of mint, this blend transforms effortlessly into a chic garden-party drink. It’s crisp, cooling and ideal for everything from sunny brunches to relaxed evenings outdoors.

What makes G&Tea Blend especially appealing is its versatility. Enjoy it hot for a calming botanical brew, or chilled for an ultra-refreshing summer cooler that feels effortlessly indulgent.

SUMMER STYLE TIP:

Serve in a large balloon glass over crushed ice with citrus garnish for the ultimate alcohol-free aperitif feel.

A TROPICAL ESCAPE: BIRD OF PARADISE TEA

If summer could be captured in a teacup, it might taste something like Bird of Paradise Tea. This exotic blend combines black tea with roasted apple pieces, papaya and an array of colourful petals including rose, marigold, mallow and cornflower, creating a tea that is as visually beautiful as it is refreshing.

The flavour is fruity, floral and softly sweet, making it the perfect companion for warm afternoons and alfresco entertaining. Served chilled, the tropical notes become even more vibrant, while the floral finish adds a delicate elegance to every sip.

Bird of Paradise Tea is also wonderfully photogenic, the kind of drink that instantly elevates a summer table setting or picnic spread.

SUMMER STYLE TIP:

Pour over ice and top with sparkling water, fresh berries and orange slices for a refreshing tea spritzer with a tropical twist.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF THE SHOREBIRD SANCTUARY AT GIBRALTAR POINT

Since 1976, wardens and volunteers at Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve near Skegness have protected some of our rarest coastal birds in a designated Sanctuary area. In April, the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust celebrated this milestone with a series of special events marking 50 years of shorebird protection.

Gibraltar Point is home to the last breeding colony of little terns in Lincolnshire and a stronghold for ringed plovers. Both the eggs and newly hatched chicks are extremely vulnerable to predation, flooding by high tides and accidental trampling in their nests, which are shallow scrapes on the shore, decorated with small pebbles and shell fragments.

For the past fifty years, from 1 April each year, the part of the beach typically favoured by these birds for nesting has been fenced off as a no-access sanctuary area to give them the best possible chance. A Shorebird Warden and team of volunteers monitor the birds, scare predators away, re-locate nests that are vulnerable to inundation by high tides and patrol the boundary of the sanctuary to

ensure people don’t enter. To carry out this work, a licence must be applied for from Natural England. This allows the Shorebird Wardens to get closer to the nests to help protect them.

The work to protect the birds is demanding and can be frustrating but, as many former wardens and volunteers say, it can also be incredibly rewarding. Their dedication has kept the populations of little terns and ringed plovers safe for fifty years.

Why are these species important?

Shorebird is a broad term that includes birds that live and nest along shorelines and wetlands. Their nests are usually just a hollow scraped out of the sand. We have two key shorebird species that we actively work to protect at Gibraltar Point.

Little tern

The UK’s smallest tern weighs about the same as a tennis ball.

Spends the winter in West Africa, returning each April to nest on beaches in the UK. In the 1900s, there were nine breeding sites in Lincolnshire.

Gibraltar Point is now the last place in the county where these birds breed, and their numbers are declining internationally.

Ringed plover

Small, pretty wader with distinctive black markings on the head and neck.

Recently added to the ‘Red List’ due to huge declines in their population numbers both in the UK and internationally.

Gibraltar Point is a stronghold for breeding ringed plover in Lincolnshire.

What can visitors to Gibraltar Point do to help the shorebirds?

Stay within the public areas of the beach

By keeping away from the sanctuary area, you will help reduce disturbance to the nests, reducing the chance of the nests being abandoned or the eggs being crushed underfoot.

Keep clear of caged nests

Most of our shorebirds nest within the sanctuary, however, some nest in the public areas of the beach. We also protect these nests. If you see circular netting on the beach, please don’t get too close. It will be around a nest to protect the eggs and adults from being disturbed.

Not flying kites or drones

The shapes and hovering effects of kites and drones are similar to flying predators. The stress of thinking that something is about to

eat you or your eggs can be too much. It can lead to the adults abandoning their nest.

April to September: keep dogs away from the beach

All year round: keep dogs on a short lead

Disturbance by dogs can impact on the breeding success and winter survival of birds at Gibraltar Point. Birds see dogs in the same way as they see any predator. It is not only the sight and movement but the scent trail that dogs leave behind that can impact on birds and may lead to them abandoning their nests. It might seem like harmless fun for a dog, but even causing birds to take flight, known as flushing, wastes valuable energy and gives the birds less time to feed. If this happens continually throughout the day, it can harm their chances of survival.

Volunteer

Our volunteers are key to the success in protecting the breeding grounds of shorebirds here at Gibraltar Point. Helping to take care of the sanctuary boundary and talking with visitors about these amazing birds has a huge impact on the success of these important species.

DAVID BURY LTD.

Frederick Bury was in the RAF during WWII and, when the war ended, he returned home to Grimsby in 1947. He and his father, Charles, then opened a grocery shop in Pasture Street.

A few years later, he saw one of the first televisions at a local hotel and realised that TV was going to be an important part of the future.

In 1955, he purchased the building next to the grocery shop and opened it as a TV and electrical appliance showroom. He named the new business David Bury Ltd after his son, David.

What the Company Does Now

Today, the company is one of Grimsby’s leading electrical appliance retailers, selling everything from smart TVs to washing machines, cookers, built-in appliances, fridgefreezers and tumble dryers.

Over the last 70 years, they have displayed and offered the very latest technology. It’s a long time since the small-screen black-andwhite TVs of 1955 — now, in 2025, they stock the latest models with large screens and cutting-edge features.

In 1955, most washing machines used a wringer to remove water from clothes. Thankfully, in 2025, there are fully automatic washers, and David Bury Ltd offers a wide range, complete with the newest technology and energy-saving features.

The shop has many loyal customers who have come to expect personalised advice when choosing an appliance, with help from experienced staff — some of whom have been with the company for over 30 years.

Part of the business has always been its appliance rental service. Customers can have all servicing and repair costs covered should their appliance go wrong. Offering fast same-day or next-day repair or replacement has been an invaluable lifeline for many customers who rely on their appliances and don’t want the hassle of upfront repair costs or buying a replacement.

To the Next Generation and the Future…

The firm is still going strong today with the

next generation: David’s daughters, Jennifer Bury, Helen Bury and Elizabeth Bury.

David Bury Ltd now has two branches: one in Grimsby (70 Pasture Street, Grimsby, DN32 9ER) and one in Immingham (403–405 Pelham Road, Immingham, DN40 1NJ).

Our long-standing partnerships mean you not only get low, low prices but also expert advice and personal service from a team that really knows their products. From the latest Bosch washing machines and ovens to smart dishwashers and refrigeration, our friendly sales staff can help you find the perfect appliance for your home.

CALOR SHOP GRIMSBY

MORE SERVICE WITH EVERY BOTTLE!

For three decades, The Calor Shop Grimsby has been a familiar name to households, tradespeople and outdoor enthusiasts across North East Lincolnshire. What began as a modest local outlet supplying bottled gas has grown into one of the region’s most trusted independent suppliers of Calor gas, heating appliances and outdoor living products—all while remaining a proud family-run business.

At the heart of the company’s story are two generations of the Clark family. Founder Bob Clark established the business 30 years ago with a simple aim: to provide reliable access to bottled gas and essential equipment for homes and businesses across the area. From its original base on Hainton Avenue, the shop quickly built a loyal customer following. Residents knew they could rely on Bob not only for Calor gas cylinders but also for practical advice, dependable supply and friendly service.

As demand for LPG gas products grew throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, the business expanded its range. Alongside propane, butane and patio gas cylinders, customers could now find heaters, barbecue equipment, regulators, hoses and other accessories. The shop gradually evolved from a simple gas supplier into a specialist destination for anyone needing reliable gas solutions.

Today, the business supports a wide variety of customers—from homeowners and caravan owners to campers, builders, tradespeople and local hospitality businesses. Whether supplying Campingaz cylinders for outdoor cooking, mobile heaters for indoor use, or barbecues and

patio heaters for summer entertaining, the focus has always remained the same: offering dependable products with expert advice.

In recent years, the next generation has taken the helm. Dennis Clark, Bob’s son, now leads the company, continuing the values established by his father while guiding the business into its next chapter. Having grown up around the shop, Dennis understands both the industry and the community it serves.

A major milestone came in April 2023, when the business relocated from its long-standing Hainton Avenue premises to a larger and more modern site on Kent Street in Grimsby. The move allowed the company to create improved customer facilities, including a welcoming reception area, expanded showroom space and easier parking for

visitors. It also gave The Calor Shop the opportunity to showcase an even wider range of products for home heating, outdoor cooking and specialist gas uses.

Despite these developments, the ethos of the business remains unchanged. The Calor Shop continues to pride itself on personal service, trusted expertise and strong community relationships.

As the company celebrates its anniversary year, it stands as a reminder that some of the most successful local businesses are those built on reliability, knowledge and genuine customer care. More than thirty years after Bob Clark first opened the doors, The Calor Shop Grimsby continues to keep homes warm, power outdoor living and support customers across the region.

JUNE

THE GARDEN AT ITS EARLY-SUMMER BEST

June is the month when the garden reaches a glorious early-summer crescendo. Spring’s freshness blends into summer’s fullness; borders brim with colour, roses are at their most fragrant, and lawns take on that rich, velvety green we look forward to all year. Long evenings, abundant pollinators and vibrant growth make the whole garden feel unmistakably alive.

With growth at its peak, small weekly tasks help maintain balance. Most June jobs are enjoyable—gentle maintenance rather than heavy lifting—allowing gardeners to admire their surroundings as they work.

BORDERS: DEADHEAD, SUPPORT AND SHAPE

June borders are energetic and full of possibility, with many perennials reaching their stride. Deadheading is one of the most valuable jobs: removing faded blooms from lupins, delphiniums, hardy geraniums, roses and other early perennials encourages a second flush and keeps borders tidy. Check supports on tall plants, as rapid growth may have pushed stems beyond their stakes; adjust ties and add extra supports where needed. Fill any gaps with late-summer performers such as heleniums, echinacea, asters and ornamental grasses to carry interest into autumn.

By June, bulb foliage has finished die-back. Once leaves yellow and detach easily, they can be cleared away to open space for new planting or summer displays.

ROSES AT THEIR PEAK

Roses are the unmistakable stars of the June garden. Keep them thriving by deadheading frequently, cutting just above a strong outward-facing leaf. Repeatflowering varieties appreciate a potassiumrich feed to maintain momentum. Water roses deeply during dry spells—they prefer occasional thorough soaking to little-and-often watering. Stay alert for pests and diseases such as aphids, black spot and mildew. Encourage natural predators, provide good airflow and remove affected foliage early to prevent issues from taking hold.

Climbing roses are especially vigorous now. Tie in new stems horizontally to encourage more flowering shoots and maintain a balanced framework.

SHRUB CARE: LIGHT PRUNING AND SUMMER SHAPING

Many shrubs complete their main flowering period by early summer. For spring and early-summer bloomers, such as philadelphus, weigela and deutzia, June is the ideal time to prune. Remove roughly a third of the oldest stems at the base, then lightly shape the rest to encourage strong young growth for next year.

Evergreens including box, yew and privet can be trimmed now, provided no birds are nesting within them. A light clip helps maintain crisp outlines and structural interest through summer.

THE VEGETABLE GARDEN: FULL PRODUCTION BEGINS

June marks a thriving phase for the vegetable garden. Sow salad leaves, carrots, beetroot, French beans and chard in small batches every few weeks for continuous harvesting. Stake tall crops such as tomatoes, peas and broad beans. Water consistently— particularly potatoes, courgettes, tomatoes and leafy crops—to support steady growth. Mulch vegetable beds to retain moisture, suppress weeds and stabilise soil temperature. Thin heavy fruit sets on apple and pear trees to improve fruit size and reduce strain on branches.

LAWNS AND WILDLIFE

Lawns grow steadily in June. Mow weekly, but raise the cutting height during hot spells to prevent stress. If you embraced “No Mow May,” reinstate mowing gradually rather than cutting long grass in one go.

Wildlife is abundant. Bees, butterflies and hoverflies thrive in early summer, so leaving pockets of uncut grass or allowing herbs like thyme, marjoram and lavender to bloom freely supports pollinators.

A MONTH TO ENJOY

June invites gardeners to slow down and savour the moment—early breakfasts outside, evening watering sessions and the scent of roses drifting in warm air. With much of the spring workload behind you, June offers the perfect combination of beauty, gentle maintenance and pure enjoyment.

WHY HORSEBOXES, MOTORHOMES AND TRAILERS ARE MORE POPULAR THAN EVER

As more people embrace outdoor living, staycations and flexible travel, horseboxes, motorhomes and trailers are becoming increasingly popular. Offering convenience, versatility and freedom, they provide practical solutions for work, leisure and recreation while making it easier to enjoy life on the move.

For equestrian enthusiasts, modern horseboxes offer far more than simple transport. Designed with comfort and safety in mind, many now feature spacious living areas, secure storage and advanced suspension systems. Whether travelling to local shows or major competitions, owners can enjoy a more relaxed and comfortable journey for both horse and rider.

Motorhomes have also enjoyed a surge in popularity in recent years. Their appeal lies in the freedom they offer. Rather than being tied to hotels or fixed accommodation, owners can travel where and when they choose, discovering new destinations at their own pace. From coastal breaks and countryside escapes to extended UK and European tours, motorhomes provide flexibility that traditional holidays often cannot match.

Today’s motorhomes are equipped with many of the comforts of home, including kitchens, sleeping areas, storage and entertainment systems. They allow travellers to enjoy the outdoors while maintaining the convenience of modern living, making them an attractive option for couples, families and retirees alike.

Trailers remain an essential transport solution for a wide variety of uses. Whether carrying classic cars, motorcycles, machinery, livestock or recreational equipment, they offer a practical and cost-effective way to move valuable assets safely. Available in numerous sizes and specifications, trailers can be adapted to suit almost any requirement.

A key factor behind the growing demand

for all three is their versatility. Advances in engineering and design have produced products that are lighter, safer and more efficient than ever before. Owners are increasingly seeking solutions that support active lifestyles while delivering long-term value and reliability.

With interest in outdoor pursuits, countryside living and independent travel continuing to grow, horseboxes, motorhomes and trailers remain a smart investment for many people. Whether transporting horses, embarking on a touring adventure or moving specialist equipment, they provide the flexibility and freedom to make the most of every journey.

For those looking to expand their lifestyle options, these versatile transport solutions offer an excellent way to combine practicality, comfort and adventure.

Celebrating 52 years on the road, Ready Rent A Car remains a standout family-run business, offering reliability, flexibility and a vast fleet while staying true to its customer-focused roots.

From its roots in 1973, Ready Rent A Car has carved out a solid legacy across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, and the story still feels just as vibrant today. What began modestly under the wing of the founding Chamley family has blossomed into a well-oiled, multi-branch operation that stays true to its humble, customerfirst heritage.

Over five decades, this tight-knit family business has steadily cultivated a sterling reputation: reliability, flexibility and heartfelt service. From one-lane drives to multi-branch fleets, they have grown but not lost their soul. You still speak to real people when you call, not bots or rigid sales desks.

pretty much any journey. Need a van for moving house? A lorry for a big job? A sleek Range Rover for a night out? They have you covered.

They are tough enough to cater for commercial needs and personal enough to treat every customer like part of the family. Their pricing is transparent and competitive, with no hidden fees and no nasty surprises, which has earned them a loyal base of regulars who return again and again.

Flexibility is in their blood. Whether you need a car for a day, a weekend, a week or even a longer term hire, Ready Rent A Car adapts to you. They tailor deals, listen to your requirements and lean on decades of know-how to match you with the right vehicle, quickly, cleanly and without fuss.

Because beyond the gleaming metal, it is still about people. The original values

of integrity, trust and service run as deep as their driving experience. The friendly voices on the phone, the rapid turnarounds, the no-questions, nice attitude of the office staff: it is what gives this 52-year firm a modern-day edge.

In short, Ready Rent A Car is the kind of company that does not just rent you a vehicle; they deliver peace of mind. A family-built heritage, a fleet that can go from small to seriously big at a moment’s notice, and a genuine customer-first philosophy. Whether you are a one-time hirer or a business needing long-term reliability, they remain a powerhouse of practical wheels wrapped in honest service.

So yes, 52 years in does not mean dusty or stodgy. It means seasoned. It means dependable. And most of all, it means still hungry, still family run and still doing it right.

NEALE COURT CARE HOME HOSTS THE DEMENTIA BUS

Held at Neale Court Care home in North Hykeham, the event invited staff members, friends and relatives of residents to take part in a free immersive experience designed to offer insight into what living with dementia can feel like.

Participants were guided through the Virtual Dementia Tour, which uses sensoryaltering equipment to replicate some of the physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges faced by people living with dementia. The experience aims to help those supporting individuals with dementia to better understand the condition and adapt their approach to care with greater empathy and compassion.

Inside the bus, headphones were used to simulate sensory overload, recreating how background noise can feel confusing and overwhelming for someone living with dementia. Participants also wore multiple pairs of gloves, restricting movement and sensation, making simple tasks such as finding items or getting dressed extremely difficult.

Many described the experience as disorientating, with everyday movements feeling unfamiliar and unsettling, offering a powerful insight into the challenges faced by those living with dementia.

Kirstie, the daughter of a resident at the Home, shared her experience, saying, “It was really intriguing stepping onto the dementia bus. I could feel my heart rate increase with anticipation because I didn’t quite know what to expect. Once inside, there were so many different things going on at once, it felt like my brain was working overtime trying to process everything. At times, I felt quite overstimulated, and it really opened my eyes to what my mum might be experiencing day to day. It’s made me more aware of how important it is not to give

Country Court Care & Nursing Homes in Lincoln

too many tasks at once, but to break things down into simpler, more manageable steps. It’s such a valuable learning tool, not just for families like mine, but for staff as well.”

Everyone who attended the event said they found the experience to have a profound impact, helping to deepen their understanding and reinforce the importance of compassionate, person-centred dementia care.

Neale Court Care Home would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended the Virtual Dementia Tour. The participation showed a shared commitment to understanding dementia and improving the lives of those living with it, helping to create a more compassionate and supportive environment for their residents and their families.
