SURVEY WORKS TO GET UNDERWAY AT FRESHNEY PLACE SHOPPING CENTRE

During the works the Market Hall entrance (pictured above left) will be open as normal during market opening days - Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 9am until 4pm. At those times Freshney Place can also be entered via this entrance. Further works are due to get underway at Freshney Place Shopping Centre, as the plans to transform the western area of Grimsby Town Centre gather pace. The work will allow specialists from appointed contractor, Morgan Sindall Construction, to carry out detailed examination surveys ahead of the major scheme starting in 2024. Trading at both Freshney Place Shopping Centre and the Top Town Market will continue throughout, with shops and stalls remaining open as normal. From Tuesday 17 October to Friday 10 November

the shopping centre’s Flottergate entrance will be closed along with one of the indoor Top Town Market entrances on the main Flottergate mall. The other three market entrances – including the two external ones next to Devonshire House and on Victoria Street – will be open as normal on market days - Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Freshney Place is otherwise unaffected, with just some slight diversions around Flottergate. Signs will direct shoppers. A spokesperson from Morgan Sindall, the appointed contractor, said: “This is an extremely exciting scheme, which is set to transform this western end of Freshney Place in terms of the

diversity of the offer and the look and feel of the whole area. As we prepare for the main works to begin, we do need to do all the necessary groundwork and we appreciate this may cause slight disruption for both shoppers and traders. We do apologise for that, and we will endeavour to keep this to a minimum.” Supported by a £20m LUF (Levelling Up Fund) grant award, the Freshney Place Market Hall and Leisure Scheme will create a modern and vibrant new Market Hall in the old BHS building, a new 5-screen cinema operated by Parkway Cinema, more space for eateries and leisure, and a purpose built and well-designed community space.

A SHINING STAR! LOCAL CAR RETAILER’S LATEST ADDITION NAMED THE SUN’S CAR OF THE YEAR

A Lincoln car retailer is proud to announce that its latest model to go on sale has been crowned The Sun’s Car of the Year and Small SUV/Crossover of the Year in the News UK Motor Awards.

Stoneacre Lincoln, on Lincoln Fields, is delighted that the all-new Volvo EX30 has been honoured with its first major awards, even before the earliest cars have reached UK roads. The EX30, the smallest SUV ever launched by Volvo, was applauded as being the benchmark model in its class, with a choice of pure electric powertrains, a sustainably focused design, cutting-edge technology and Volvo’s quality and safety, all at an accessible price. Rob Gill, The Sun Motors Editor, said: “The EX30 is everything you expect a modern Volvo to be – safe, Scandi cool and sustainable – at a price you’d never expect. The EX30 is going to be a huge hit. We’re utterly convinced of it. It is the stand-out winner as The Sun Car of the Year.” Adding to the car’s success, the EX30 was also named Small SUV/Crossover of the Year in the News UK Motor Awards, which represents a number of the organisation’s national media platforms, including The Sunday Times. Nick Rufford, Motoring Editor at The Sunday Times, added: “Savvy buyers have been holding out

for an electric SUV that’s smart looking, has vim and zest, and doesn’t break the bank. This mini-Volvo’s sub-£34,000 starting price undercuts not only its electric rivals, but plenty of petrol SUVs, too.” Andy McInnes, Business Manager at Stoneacre Lincoln, said: “We’ve already seen real excitement about the EX30 since launching the car earlier this summer, which these two awards will only add to as drivers look for an affordable electric option to replace their current vehicles.

“The EX30 offers all of the premium quality, safety and sustainability associated with Volvo Cars, in a convenient, compact and affordable package – so it’s great to see this already being recognised by national publications. “We welcome Lincoln drivers to pop into Stoneacre Lincoln to learn more about the small but mighty EX30 and chat to our friendly team of experts.” For further information about Stoneacre Lincoln, visit volvocarslincoln.co.uk or call 01522 501701.

DELIGHT AS NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE IS REVEALED AS A NATIONAL ‘HERITAGE PLACE’ Area is one of 20 that will share £200m long-term heritage funding over the next decade.

Pictures show projects in North East Lincolnshire that have already benefitted from National Lottery Heritage Fund support - the new OnSide Horizon Youth Zone and the restoration of the Victorian balconies on Alexandra Road in Cleethorpes. North East Lincolnshire can build on the past, but through the lens of ‘the now’ its people can see their deep and rich connection to the sea, and also learn from their heritage. On Sunday 8th October, a major boost to its heritage and cultural work, the borough has been named as one of the UK’s initial nine “Heritage Places” by the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF), securing priority investment for the next 10 years. With 11 more areas to be announced, in total there is a dedicated funding pot of £200m for North East Lincolnshire and the other 19 areas between now and 2033. The 20 places have been chosen based on their ‘heritage needs, opportunities and potential’. Announcing the long-term Heritage Places project, Eilish McGuinness, Chief Executive of the NLHF said: “Our Heritage Places is designed to support in challenging times, to achieve even greater impact, and commits our funding for the long-term.” Cllr Hayden Dawkins, North East Lincolnshire Council’s Cabinet member for Culture and Heritage, said: “We are delighted to have been selected as a ‘Heritage Place’ and look forward to continuing to work closely with the Heritage Fund to support our communities to explore their heritage “It is amazing when you stop and consider the dedication and enthusiasm being displayed by a growing number of people and organisations in North East Lincolnshire – all who have a desire to see us all enjoy arts, culture and heritage and also learn and grow. Everyone here at the Council thanks all those involved, and we are excited to

see what the future brings. This also builds on the regeneration of our borough and will complement the vast amount of work being done to transform our area,” he added. Over the last few years, Heritage Fund support has been crucial to the borough’s journey of rediscovery, of reinvention and of planning for the future. North East Lincolnshire has been the benefactor of some fantastic support to help enrich its own history, heritage and culture, which has supported wider investment through the funding from the Towns Fund, UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Arts Council England. There’s been plenty of work around the subject of heritage, not only through work the Council has led on, but partners and private sector too. Let’s look at some of the projects supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and, of course, those who play the National Lottery: Work on Grimsby docks, supported by a range of funding sources has led to a raft of improved buildings and new occupation, bringing the port to life with culture and craft as well as coffee and cake! Recipients of Heritage Fund money include the Peterson’s Project, with other funding from Historic England supporting projects throughout the Heritage Action Zone. Over in Cleethorpes, a £1.9m NLHF supported programme is helping to restore historic balconies and shop fronts on the resort’s historic Alexandra Road. But it’s the heart of Grimsby that’s leading the transformation. More than £2m of Heritage Fund money is supporting the new Horizon OnSide Youth Zone project at West Haven Maltings, providing a place for young people in the borough to go, to learn and to play.

And Our Big Picture Limited was supported by Heritage Fund to acquire a Grade 2 listed building on Bethlehem Street. The organisation now has its own space to give North East Lincolnshire communities a chance to explore their heritage and culture. But it’s not all about buildings! North East Lincolnshire was selected for a grant as an ‘Area of Focus’ for The National Lottery Heritage Fund due to low heritage investment. This provided opportunity to work with more people across the borough. The area was awarded £250,000 from the Heritage Fund to create a ‘Heritage Starter Fund’ and establish a Heritage Network. Working in partnership with Heritage Lincolnshire, the aim was to widen audiences for heritage and to ensure that heritage plays a key role in helping communities recover from the impacts of COVID19. As a result, new events, experiences and activities have been supported and grown from this seed corn investment – from the Grim Falfest for the last two Septembers, to sharing memories of Grimsby Town Football Club and protecting and enhancing iconic buildings like Weelsby Hall.

CONSULTATION CLOSING ON FOSSE GREEN ENERGY SOLAR AND ENERGY STORAGE PARK • First consultation on proposals for new solar energy storage park in Lincolnshire will close on 20 October. • Views submitted will be used to shape proposals for the solar and energy storage park and grid connection corridors. • Four events have been held in the local area and one online with over 450 people attending.

A team led by Windel Energy is urging people to submit their feedback to the first stage of consultation on Fosse Green Energy, a new solar and energy storage park 9 kilometres (5.6 miles) south west of Lincoln, in North Kesteven. This stage of consultation closes at 11:59pm on Friday 20 October. The proposed site is located to the north and south of the A46, known as Fosse Way, and will be made up of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, battery energy storage areas and associated infrastructure. The solar and energy storage park is expected to provide enough clean energy to power in the region of 110,000 homes. Running over six weeks, this first stage of consultation has given local communities and interested parties the opportunity to learn more about the project at this early stage, and to share views to help shape the project’s design. The consultation has also invited suggestions for local initiatives which could be

lincolnshireinfocus.co.uk

supported to benefit the communities closest to the scheme. People can provide feedback by email at info@fossegreenenergy.co.uk, via freepost at FREEPOST FOSSE GREEN ENERGY, or online at www.fossegreenenergy.co.uk So far, five events have been held, during which local communities were able to learn more about the project, ask questions directly to the project team and leave feedback. In total over 450 people attended these events and we received valuable feedback which will be considered in the design of Fosse Green Energy.

The solar and energy storage park is being proposed by Fosse Green Energy Limited, a subsidiary of Windel Energy and the funder of the project, Recurrent Energy. A project website has further details and can be found at www.fossegreenenergy. co.uk. People can register their details on the website to ensure they are updated at key project milestones.

Once consultation closes, the project team will consider all the feedback submitted, alongside the findings from ongoing technical and environmental studies. A second stage of consultation is planned to be held in early 2024.

The project community relations team can also be contacted directly via email address info@fossegreenenergy.co.uk or by calling the project phoneline (Mon- Fri, 9am-5pm) at 0800 860 6262.

Nestled in the heart of Lincolnshire, Market Rasen Racecourse has a lot to look forward to over the next twelve months, from the Boxing Day fixture which attracts people from all around the county, to the centenary anniversary which will be celebrated in 2024.

O

pened in 1924 with an original capacity of just 1700 people and just three fixtures per year, Market Rasen now hosts over 20 jumps racing meetings annually as well as various conferences, events and live music concerts. The original racecourse, built in 1923 on 50 acres of land, officially opened its doors to racegoers on Easter Monday 21 April 1924 with admission fees starting at just 10p per person for stand, ring and paddock access. During the war, racing was suspended, and the racecourse served primarily as a residence for Italian prisoners of war who helped maintain the grounds until racing resumed in 1946. Lincolnshire boasts a rich history in steeple chasing with the first ever recorded races held

before 1820 which had just two contenders, was run over 10 miles and included 120 jumps! From 1821 a more reasonable and renowned series of matches, covering distances of up to 10 miles and possibly including up to 80 jumps, were established. These races evolved to become the precursors to the Market Rasen Spring Meeting, an annual event held on Easter Monday, situated on lands offered by various local landowners. Since its inception, Market Rasen has seen a number of innovative changes including the addition of summer racing which was introduced in 1995 along with six other courses in the UK. Another significant highlight is the cherished Boxing Day meeting, an integral part of Lincolnshire’s Christmas festivities, drawing thousands of spectators each year.

2024 fixtures now confirmed Please see website for details

As Market Rasen Racecourse prepares to mark its centenary milestone, it continues to be a beacon of sporting excellence, captivating generations with thrilling races and unforgettable moments. As far as Christmas traditions go, Boxing Day at Market Rasen Racecourse has become a ritual for families across Lincolnshire & beyond to escape the house after Christmas Day to come together and enjoy a thrilling festive day out. Racegoers can enjoy seven exhilarating jump races including the prestigious Lincolnshire National over three and a half miles, serving as Market Rasen’s answer to the iconic Grand National at Aintree.

CHRISTMAS 2023

Christmas Recipe

Del Monte Perfect Christmas Trifle INGREDIENTS: • 160g pack of trifle sponges (or use sponge fingers) • 100g raspberry jam • 150ml pale cream sherry • 2 cans (420g) Del Monte Fruit Cocktail in Juice • 1 pack (135g) raspberry (or strawberry) flavour jelly cubes • 500ml ready-made custard • 400ml double cream • Dark chocolate, to finish • Edible gold stars, to finish (optional)

Serves 10 Prep: 45 mins plus 8 hours setting time

METHOD: • Slice each trifle sponge in half horizontally, spread with jam and sandwich back together. Use the jammy sponges to line the base of a 2.5litre-capacity glass trifle dish. It’s easiest to do this if you cut the sponges into smaller pieces first: cubes or triangles work well and allow you to get a fairly even layer without many gaps. You can crumble up the last sponge and use the crumbs to plug any obvious spaces. Trickle the sherry slowly all over the sponge layer, making sure it soaks into all the sponges. Give it 10 minutes to soak in then use your hands or a spoon to press the sponges down a little. • Tip the fruit cocktail into a sieve over a large measuring jug, to catch the juice (which you’ll need in a minute). Arrange the drained fruit over the sherry-soaked sponge in an even layer. • Cut the jelly into individual cubes. Follow the instructions on the pack for making the jelly, which should go like this: pour 285ml just-boiled water into a jug. Add the jelly cubes and stir for a couple of minutes until they have completely dissolved. You now need to add 285ml cold liquid – the reserved syrup from the fruit cocktail should be more or less the right

amount! If it’s more than that, pour a little off, and if it’s less, add some cold water to get the right quantity. combine with the hot jelly liquid and stir well. Pour the jelly slowly and carefully all over the fruit cocktail. Put the bowl in the fridge for at least 8 hours so the jelly can set. Pour the custard on to the jelly so that it settles in an even layer. Pour the cream into a mixing bowl and whip with electric beaters until it holds soft peaks. Spoon it gently over the custard and use a palette knife to create a nice swirly finish. Use a potato peeler or a knife to create chocolate shavings (a peeler is easier, but if you pull a knife blade over the smooth side of a chocolate bar, you can create larger curls). Scatter the chocolate over the whipped cream, finish with a few gold stars if you have them, and your trifle is ready to serve.

What Is Zero Waste? The zero waste concept is to try and make your life as waste free as possible. It is cutting out single use, disposable items from your every day life. It is reusing and refilling what you have rather than buying new. Grab your bottles, jars and pots from your cupboards at home and bring them here to fill up with the exact quantities you need. How it works: bring containers, weigh them empty, fill, bring to till and pay. Easy peasy! Why Refill? This will drastically reduce your plastic and general packaging

CHRISTMAS 2023

Unwrapping Christmas:

Tracing the Origins of a Timeless Tradition As the air turns crisp and the scent of evergreens fills the air, the world eagerly anticipates the arrival of Christmas. Beyond the twinkling lights and festive decorations lies a rich tapestry of history and tradition that has been woven over centuries. Join us as we unwrap the origins of Christmas, a celebration that transcends borders and brings joy to hearts around the globe.

Winter Solstice Celebrations: The roots of Christmas extend deep into ancient history, intertwining with various winter solstice celebrations. In pre-Christian times, many cultures marked the winter solstice - a time when the sun reaches its lowest point in the sky, resulting in the shortest day and longest night of the year. These celebrations symbolised the triumph of light over darkness and were often accompanied by feasts, rituals, and the exchange of gifts.

Roman Saturnalia: The Roman festival of Saturnalia, held in honour of the god Saturn, is another precursor to Christmas. Taking place in late December, this weeklong celebration involved feasting, gift-giving, and a temporary reversal of social roles. Slaves became masters, and a spirit of revelry prevailed throughout the festivities.

Christian Adoption of December 25th: The early Christian Church, recognising the popularity of existing winter celebrations, strategically chose December 25th as the date to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. While the exact date of Jesus’ birth remains unknown, this alignment allowed Christmas to integrate with existing traditions and ease the conversion of pagan communities to Christianity.

Medieval Christmas: During the Middle Ages, Christmas evolved into a more religious

lincolnshireinfocus.co.uk

observance with a focus on nativity scenes and religious pageants. However, the festive and communal spirit persisted, with feasting, carolling, and the exchange of small gifts becoming integral parts of the celebration.

The Influence of Victorian Era: The 19th century, particularly the Victorian era, witnessed a revival of interest in Christmas traditions. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert popularised the Christmas tree, a tradition borrowed from their German heritage. The publication of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” further solidified many modern Christmas customs, emphasising themes of generosity and goodwill.

Globalisation of Christmas Traditions: As the world became more interconnected, Christmas traditions spread and evolved. Immigrants carried their customs to new lands, contributing to the diverse tapestry of global celebrations. Today, Christmas is celebrated in various ways, incorporating both religious and secular elements.

Modern Celebrations: In the 20th and 21st centuries, Christmas has become a multi-faceted celebration, embracing religious observances, familial gatherings, and the exchange of gifts. The figure of Santa Claus, derived from the Dutch Sinterklaas, adds a touch of magic and generosity to the season, captivating the hearts of children worldwide.

CHRISTMAS 2023

All that glitters IS gold! As the festive season approaches, the search for the perfect gift becomes a delightful quest to capture the essence of love and celebration. In the realm of thoughtful presents, few offerings rival the enduring allure of jewellery.

T

his Christmas, consider elevating your gift-giving experience by presenting a loved one with a piece of jewellery that not only adorns but also encapsulates the warmth and significance of the season.

Jewellery has a unique ability to convey sentiments that words often struggle to express. Whether it’s a delicate necklace, a pair of sparkling earrings, or a timeless bracelet, each piece becomes a wearable symbol of love, connection, and shared memories. This Christmas, choose a piece that resonates with the recipient’s style and holds sentimental value, creating a cherished memento that will be treasured for years to come. Unlike many gifts that may come and go with trends, jewellery possesses a timeless quality that transcends seasons. A classic piece, carefully selected with the recipient’s taste in mind, becomes a lasting embodiment of style and grace. Whether it’s a vintage-inspired piece or a modern design, jewellery has the power to encapsulate the essence of elegance, making it a gift that stands the test of time. One of the most enchanting aspects of gifting jewellery is the opportunity for personalization. Choose pieces that can be engraved or customised to reflect the recipient’s individuality. Birthstones, initials, or significant dates

can be incorporated, adding an extra layer of meaning to the gift. This personal touch transforms the jewellery into a truly unique and intimate expression of thoughtfulness. The holiday season is synonymous with joy and celebration, and what better way to capture its radiance than with the sparkle of gemstones? Whether it’s the brilliance of diamonds, the vibrant hues of precious stones, or the lustrous glow of pearls, jewellery adds a touch of magic to festive occasions. A carefully chosen piece can enhance the celebratory atmosphere, making the recipient feel like the star of the season. Jewellery has a remarkable ability to transcend generations, becoming cherished heirlooms passed down through families. This Christmas, consider selecting a piece that not only resonates with the present but also carries the potential to become a timeless legacy. The act of passing down a cherished piece of jewellery creates a connection between past, present, and future, weaving a beautiful tapestry of familial bonds. In the art of gift-giving, jewellery stands as a beacon of elegance, sentiment, and enduring beauty. Whether it’s a sparkling necklace, a pair of shimmering earrings, or a meaningful bracelet, let your choice of jewellery be a radiant reflection of love and celebration, making this Christmas truly unforgettable.

In 2019, Segal's embarked on a new chapter, relocating to a larger establishment in Hull, just a stone's throw away from their former shop in Paragon Arcade, which has been transformed into their dedicated Silver Shop. The gleaming new shop, nestled at the intersection of Chariot Street and Carr Lane, preserves the cherished Segal's essence while adding a touch of extra sparkle. They have taken the jewellery trade to the next level with their new flagship store, focusing heavily on window displays that evolve regularly, captivating passers-by and inviting them to explore an extensive array of jewellery that sparkles with timeless charm.

WHERE YOU WILL FIND YOUR SPARKLE

The business is now run by sister and brother, Jo and Mat - with their mum Shirley Segal actively overseeing the daily runnings. Mat and his wife Jane, plus Jo and her husband Martin, all work together to make the business what it is today! Their children are now joining the industry, making this a fourth-generation family business they are all very proud of.

Segal's Jewellers have been enchanting the hearts of Hull and Grimsby customers for over a century. With a rich history spanning antique, new, and pre-owned jewellery, their legacy is one of enduring elegance. From luxurious diamond jewellery, engagement and wedding bands to prestigious timepieces and everyday jewellery, Segal's has a range of jewellery to cater to every taste. At Segal's, they offer buy-ins and part-exchange services for your unwanted items. Beyond this, they offer a spectrum of services ranging from simple repairs to bespoke jewellery designed exclusively for you, providing expert advice in a friendly environment and priding themselves on good old-fashioned values.

The flagship store in Hull saw a huge increase in footfall when they opened in 2019, so when the news came that they were to move premises to accommodate Freshney Place’s new development, it was an easy decision to reflect the design of the Hull store. Although there is a modern and contemporary feel to the new premises, based on Friargate in Freshney Place, Segal’s do still hold the same values & have the same smiley faces, that their customers know and love. Segal’s has long had a loyal, local customer base, both in Hull & Grimsby and even some travelling from further afield. This expansion into larger premises in both locations was not only anticipated but also met with success. In addition to their devoted regulars, Segal's has succeeded in captivating the hearts of new customers, who are delighted with the store and the extensive range of antique, secondhand and new jewellery.

HOMES & GARDENS

‘DECK THE HALLS’ A GUIDE TO PREPARING YOUR HOME & GARDEN FOR CHRISTMAS As the festive season approaches, it’s time to transform your home and garden into a winter wonderland that radiates the spirit of Christmas.

F

rom the iconic Christmas tree taking centre stage in the living room to the twinkling lights adorning your garden and the welcoming wreath on the front door, let’s delve into the art of creating a warm and inviting holiday atmosphere.

Start by outlining the pathways, trees, and shrubs with strings of lights. Opt for warm white lights for a classic feel or go bold with multi-coloured strands for a playful touch. Consider using net lights for easy draping over bushes and hedges.

THE CHRISTMAS TREE: A Time-Honored Tradition The Christmas tree is undoubtedly the star of the show when it comes to holiday decorations. Begin by selecting a tree that fits your space and personal style. Whether you opt for a traditional evergreen or a modern artificial tree, the key is to make it your own.

To add a touch of magic, incorporate lighted figurines or outdoor Christmas decorations. Whether it’s a jolly Santa Claus, a reindeer, or nativity scene, these additions bring the spirit of Christmas to your outdoor space.

Start by stringing lights evenly around the tree, ensuring a balanced and festive glow. Choose a color scheme for your ornaments—whether it’s classic red and green, winter whites and blues, or a vibrant mix of colors. Personalise your tree with cherished ornaments, each carrying its own sentimental value. Consider adding a tree topper that complements your theme, such as a sparkling star or an elegant angel. And don’t forget the tree skirt—a decorative touch that completes the look and hides the tree stand. LIGHTS IN THE GARDEN: Guiding the Way to Holiday Magic Extend the f estive ambiance beyond the walls of your home by illuminating your garden with twinkling lights. Outdoor Christmas lights come in various shapes, sizes, and colors, allowing you to get creative with your display.

THE WELCOMING WREATH: A Festive Greeting the Front Door Make a lasting impression on your guests by adorning your front door with a beautiful Christmas wreath. Wreaths are versatile and can be crafted from a variety of materials, including fresh greenery, faux foliage, or even a mix of both.

may opt for a classic evergreen wreath adorned with red bows and ornaments, while those with a modern aesthetic might prefer a minimalist design with metallic accents.

Warm Hearts & Cosy Moments: Bring comfort to the Elderly this Christmas

Christmas is a time of joy, family, and togetherness. For our elderly loved ones, the holiday season can bring a unique set of challenges, especially if they live alone.

I

n the spirit of giving, let’s explore ways to care for, visit, and create lasting memories with the elderly during this festive season, ensuring that their winter months are filled with warmth both in heart and home.

In the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it’s easy to get caught up in the material aspects of gift-giving. However, for the elderly, the most precious gift is often the gift of time. Plan regular visits, whether it’s a weekend afternoon or a special Christmas Eve gathering. Engage in meaningful conversations, share stories, and simply be present. The warmth of human connection is a priceless gift that transcends material possessions.

Decorations not only create a festive atmosphere but also serve as a visual reminder of the joy and warmth the season brings. Food has a remarkable way of bringing people together. Prepare a homemade meal or bring over some festive treats to share. Consider dietary restrictions and preferences, and create a menu that caters to their tastes. Sharing a meal not only nourishes the body but also nourishes the soul through shared moments of laughter and connection. During colder months, practical assistance becomes even more critical. Ensure that their home is winter-ready by checking for potential hazards and making necessary adjustments. Offer assistance with grocery shopping, snow removal, or any tasks that may be challenging for them. These small acts of kindness contribute to their overall well-being. Take the time to reminisce about past holidays and create new memories together. Look through old photo albums, share stories of cherished moments, and perhaps engage in some festive activities like baking cookies or crafting ornaments. These shared experiences create a sense of continuity and connection across generations.

FARMING

A Guide to Farming in the Chill

EMBRACING

WINTER!

As the festive season approaches, the search for the perfect gift becomes a delightful quest to capture the essence of love and celebration. In the realm of thoughtful presents, few offerings rival the enduring allure of jewellery.

As winter blankets the landscape in a serene coat of white, farmers find themselves faced with a unique set of challenges and opportunities. Winter farming is not just a season of dormancy; it’s a time for strategic planning, careful storage, and thoughtful preparation for the coming spring.

W

e delve into the various aspects of winter farming, from seed storage to animal care, and explore the key steps to ensure a successful and productive season.

Seed Storage: Preserving the Essence of Life As the last autumn leaves fall, it’s time to shift focus from the fields to the storage barns. Proper seed storage is crucial for maintaining the viability of seeds and ensuring a bountiful harvest in the upcoming season. Choose a cool, dry place to store seeds, protecting them from both freezing temperatures and excess moisture. Airtight containers or sealed bags can help prevent exposure to the elements and potential damage from pests.

Stripping and Drying: Honouring the Harvest Before the winter freeze sets in, it’s essential to complete the process of stripping crops from the fields. The harvested crops should be allowed to dry thoroughly to prevent mold and decay during storage. Depending on the climate, a combination of sun-drying and controlled indoor drying may be employed. This step is vital for preserving the quality of the harvest and ensuring that the fruits of your labor withstand the winter months.

Threshing: Separating Grain from Chaff Threshing, the process of separating grains from the rest of the plant, is a necessary step for crops like wheat, barley, and oats. This can be done manually or using mechanised threshers. Once threshed, the grains can be stored in airtight containers, safeguarding them from the harsh winter conditions. Thoroughly threshing the crops ensures that only the pure essence of the harvest is preserved.

Bedding Down the Animals: Ensuring Comfort and Health Animals, the heartbeat of any farm, need special care during the winter months. Adequate bedding, protection from the cold, and a well-balanced diet are essential for their well-being. Cosy barns with ample straw bedding provide a comfortable retreat for livestock. Regular health checks and vaccinations should be conducted to address any potential issues before they escalate.

Early Preparations for Spring: Sowing the Seeds of Tomorrow While winter may seem like a period of hibernation for the farm, it’s also the perfect time for planning and preparation. Crop rotation plans, soil enrichment strategies, and equipment maintenance should be on the agenda. Investing time and effort in these early preparations sets the stage for a vibrant and fruitful spring. Winter farming is not a time to hibernate but an opportunity to lay the groundwork for future abundance. By carefully storing seeds, preserving the harvest, tending to animals, and planning for the upcoming season, farmers can ensure that their fields burst into life when the thaw arrives. Embracing the challenges of winter farming is a testament to the resilience and foresight that define the agricultural spirit.

Hanging and Cleaning: A Winter Ritual In many cultures, the winter months are synonymous with the curing and hanging of herbs and vegetables. This age-old practice not only preserves the nutritional value of the produce but also infuses farmhouses with the delightful aroma of dried herbs. Cleaning and organising tools, machinery, and storage areas during this time prevent any unwanted surprises when spring arrives. It’s a time to reflect on the year gone by and prepare for the renewal that spring promises.
