THE CAXTON PLAYERS

Dear Patrons

Welcome to our brochure highlighting the second half of our 2026 season but first, a look back at what has already graced our stage this year.

Our season opened with a glance into the world of the charity shop with the production of Good Things. This was a surprising success for a January production selling 89% of its seats. A gentle comedy with a Cinderella like story line was very well received and kicked 2026 off to a great start. What followed was Home, another gentle comedy. It featured four characters pontificating about life, loves and anything else that came to mind. Where were they though? Your guess was as good as ours! Our third play was the comedy classic Abigail’s Party. Set in the 1970’s it can almost be classed as a period piece. Although almost fifty years old it is still a firm favourite in theatres around Britain, as our ticket sales showed. Next we had a new piece of work from local writers John and Victoria Taylor, Tommy’s Long Weekend, the tale of John’s Grandfather local Landlord Tommy Taylor, featuring Grimsby Town Football club’s famous FA Cup semi-final game against Wolverhampton Wanderers. It is really special to have a world premiere production in our little theatre.

The second half of 2026 starts with an hilarious production of The Unfriend. Fresh from its WestEnd run this tells the story of a British couple having a holiday encounter with a mysterious American who turns out to have a dark past. In September we have another world premiere, A Rainbow Over Sheffield written and directed by our own David Wrightam. This is a bittersweet comedy/drama centring around the life of a prostitute in the city of Sheffield. The Effect follows. Two young urban twenty somethings take part in a drugs trial. Two doctors are monitoring the trial. As time goes on our guinea pig couple find themselves strongly attracted. The two Doctors also seem to have a connection. But is it the drugs causing the attraction or something else? Our 2026 season closes with Bleak Expectations, a riotous romp through the world of Charles Dickens. It is said this is the sort of play Dickens would have written

if he’d drunk too much gin. It’s Dickens meets Monty Python meets pantomime.

A massive thank you must go to all our volunteers who staff the theatre from our wonderful directors, the actors, and the technicians and back-stage crew who stage our plays. To the members who look after you the audience, welcoming you in our lovely theatre, serving you behind the bar and in our coffee bar, the programme sellers and our box office team. Last but not least, our enduring thanks to you, our Patrons, without whom we would not exist.

There are countless opportunities within The Caxton Theatre both on and off stage if you want to join and become a volunteer. The membership application form is within this brochure or you can contact us at caxton. membership@outlook.com and you can join online. If you just want to know more about our Caxton family, come along to our regular Thursday open nights where you can meet current members for an informal chat and listen to the Director of the next play to be cast describing their play.

This brochure contains our plans for July 2026 –December 2026 but they are subject to change. For further information, photographs and updates check our website www.caxtontheatre.com or our Facebook page The Caxton Theatre Grimsby. Or join our mailing list – mailing.caxtontheatre@ gmail.com

It is always a warm and friendly gathering in the Studio Bar area where you are guaranteed a warm welcome, and the Bar is always open. Look out for dates in this brochure and around the Theatre.

Directed by Michael Mayne

Director Michael Mayne, and his incredible cast, are to be applauded for this wonderful production. Not only for bringing to life the quirky and intriguing lives of the inmates of this institution magnificently, but for living that well-known mantra ‘the show must go on’, when unfortunately, lead actor Norman Dunnington, had to stand down after two performances, due to ill health. I was most fortunate to see Norman’s wonderful performance on opening night and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, Michael stepped in for the rest of the run and the reception was amazing. The support from the rest of the cast and from the audiences each night, was truly incredible. Well done to everyone.

The Unfriend

Steven Moffat’s play The Unfriend takes an hilarious and satirical look at middle-class England’s disastrous instinct always to appear nice.

While on holiday, Peter and Debbie befriend Elsa: a lusty, Trump-loving widow from Denver, USA. She’s less than woke but kind of wonderful. They agree to stay in touch – because no one ever really does, do they?

When Elsa invites herself to stay a few months later, they decide to look her up online. Too late, they learn the truth about Elsa Jean Krakowski. Deadly danger

has just boarded a flight to London! But how do you protect all that you love from mortal peril without seeming, well, a bit impolite? Because guess who’s coming... to murder!

Steven Moffat is an award-winning writer whose internationally successful television shows include Doctor Who, Sherlock and Dracula – the latter two co-written with actor and writer Mark Gatiss, who made his stage directorial debut with The Unfriend.

5 – 12 SEPTEMBER 2026

A R ainbow over Sheffield

A new play written and directed by David Wrightam

Set in a rundown flat in Sheffield, the play will have the audience laughing one minute and crying the next.

Rusty is a prostitute, and she and her friend Mavis run a business from their flat. This mainly involves dressing up to re-enact scenes from famous films for kinky pensioners.

Rusty dreams of breaking away and starting a new life but breaking away from her violent pimp will take some doing. A visit from her young sister triggers a series of events that lead her to see a flicker of light at the end of the tunnel, and a chance for a new life. But life is

cruel, and rainbows don’t last forever. A cruel turn of events puts her in a position where she must………… (now that would be telling!)

Please note that tickets can be purchased from our website www.caxtontheatre.com and also by ringing Ticket Source on 0333 666 3366

This amateur production is presented with kind permission of the playwright.

As time goes on Connie and Tristan find themselves strongly attracted.

The two Doctors also seem to have a connection.

In the end everyone takes a leap in the dark. What’s love got to do with it?

28 NOVEMBER - 5 DECEMBER 2026

BLEAK EXPECTATIONS

by

The story Charles Dickens might have written after drinking too much gin…

Follow half orphan Pip’s extraordinary exploits with sisters Pippa and Poppy and best friend Harry Biscuit, as they attempt to escape the calculating clutches of the dastardly Mr Gently Benevolent, defeat the hideous Hardthrasher siblings, and deflect disaster at every turn! Will evil be vanquished by virtue? Can Love triumph over hate?

Bleak Expectations is an hilarious chaotic caper, featuring dastardly villains, preposterous names, pulsequickening romances, heart-rendering death scenes, and definitely, probably, hopefully a happy ending.

ABOUT THE THEATRE

On February 2nd 1943, The Grimsby Evening Telegraph carried an advertisement for a play performed by the Caxton Players. On the front page was a photograph of a scene from ‘Children to Bless You’.

This was the first public appearance by the ‘Caxton Players’ as a society. The real beginnings though go further back. Late in 1940, at a time when local dramatic societies and operatic groups had closed down because of the war, three members of the Grimsby Evening Telegraph staff decided to put on a play, to counteract the depression of the times. John Knowles, the advertising manager, two of his staff, Mary Pinion and Sheila Robinson, all with some dramatic experience, and four other newspaper workers became the Telegraph Amateur Dramatic Society. In February 1943, it was decided by the committee that a new society should be formed, because there were so few members of the Evening Telegraph now left. The name ‘Caxton’ was suggested because of the connection with printing.

The society has continued to thrive since its humble beginnings and is the only society in North East Lincolnshire with its own theatre. Our auditorium seats 174 people and we produce eight main-house productions per year. These productions last for seven performances –Saturday to Saturday (excluding Sunday), and are produced every six to seven weeks.

A taster of the play normally takes place 14-16 weeks before opening night, where anyone can come along and have a drink and hear the Director’s take on the play about to be cast. Audition pieces are available on the night to take away to prepare for the auditions, which take place a few nights later.

Auditions take place in front of a casting panel of three directors, one of which will be the director of the play concerned. Rehearsal periods last about 12-13 weeks before opening night. The number of rehearsals you will be required to attend depends on the size of the part you have. The director will draw up a rehearsal schedule at the beginning so you will know when you are required. As we always have at least two plays in production at any one time, the first period of rehearsals take place in our rehearsal rooms (Burnetts) next door to the theatre in Strand Street. Then immediately after the preceding play finishes rehearsals move to the actual stage until opening night.

We also put on smaller productions, normally for two or three nights, in the bar area –the Studio Bar. Rehearsals for these productions vary, depending on the director and cast involved. The taster and auditions for these productions are usually run as for a main stage production. We hope the above information gives you a taste of our society.

OPEN NIGHTS AND AUDITIONS

Anyone is welcome to come along to our regular open nights and to audition to be in any Caxton Main House or Studio Bar Play – in fact this is how most of our members arrive!

We hold an open night, usually on a Thursday, before every play about to be cast. The format varies according to the Director. Generally, the taster for the play and the characters will last for approximately up to an hour after which there is the opportunity to socialise. You can also decide if you fancy having a go. If the answer is yes, then you should come to the audition night, usually the following Tuesday.

Alternatively, come to an open night purely as a social event, to meet new people. The bar will be open and you can be assured of a warm and friendly welcome.

Auditions are held before a panel of three directors, who will select the best mix of people to form the cast. You will not have to act in front of everyone else, nor learn the audition piece by heart.

We choose a variety of plays each season so there are roles to suit all talents and ages. Experienced actors and complete novices are welcomed every year; our directors are always looking for new talent to nurture and develop.

A Caxton play takes about 12 weeks from first rehearsal to opening night. Rehearsals are usually three nights a week, at the discretion of the director, but minor players rehearse significantly less. Everyone is part of the team and preparing a play is seen as a social event and a chance for fun and friendship.

Details of open nights and auditions can be found on our website www.caxtontheatre.com, Facebook (thecaxtontheatre) and on page 28 of this brochure.
