Record-breaking sum raised by Hull businesses for sailors’ children’s clothing

More than £72,000 was raised by Hull’s business community at an annual charity business lunch.

The Sailors’ Children’s Society Sportsman’s Lunch on October 13 at the Double Tree by Hilton saw nearly 700 businesspeople digging deep for winter clothing grants as the cost-ofliving crisis fuelled a surge in demand for help.

The urgent funds were donated through tickets, sponsorship, auctions and a raffle, beating last year’s previous record-holding figure of £55,000.

The national charity, which started in Hull in 1821, supports the children of seafarers all over the country and has held the Sportsman’s Lunch for more than two decades. Guests at this year’s event, sponsored by Williamsons Solicitors and Beerhouse Vehicle Rental, were entertained by star speaker the Welsh former Rugby Union referee and television personality Nigel Owens.

The auction, which raised £29,300, was hosted

by Caroline Hawley from BBC One’s Bargain Hunt, who was joined by her husband, the ex-footballer John Hawley. For the third consecutive year, former Olympians Jamie Baulch and Colin Jackson attended after being inspired to provide ongoing help to the charity.

Jamie hosted the silent auction and Colin donated a group training session as an auction prize which raised more than £6,000 with the winning bid going to RSM.

Roger Pearce joins Associated British Ports Associated British Ports (ABP) is delighted to welcome Roger Pearce to the company as Head of Health, Safety, and Environment (Humber) and supporting health and safety for Group.

Roger has worked for both regulatory and commercial organisations within various sectors, including manufacturing, real estate, and hospitality.

Major £31 million funding boost for Yorkshire and Humberside bus services as fare cap set to be extended

• £31 million of redirected HS2 funding confirmed for next financial year to improve bus services in Yorkshire and Humberside • Funding is the first allocation of a £1 billion investment into bus services across the North and Midlands as part of the Network North Plan • Comes as ‘Get Around for £2’ cost-of-living support scheme set to be extended from 1 November Yorkshire and Humberside is set to benefit from over £31 million of new funding to improve bus services over the next financial year, the Transport Secretary has announced today (Monday 23 October).

This is the first tranche of £1 billion worth of new funding that the government is dedicating to bus services across the North and the Midlands as part of the Network North Plan - with further funding allocations to be announced in due course.

While is up to local authorities in partnership with operators to decide how best to use the funding, the total £150m funding for next year across the North and Midlands is enough to support up to 25 million miles of new bus services, helping local authorities provide more regular and reliable services or cheaper fares delivered through fare initiatives and ticket price caps.

The funding has only been made possible thanks to this government making the right long-term decisions for a brighter future. The reallocation of HS2 funding as part of Network North ensures that we can deliver our new £36 billion plan to

improve the daily transport connections that matter most to people, benefitting more people, in more places, more quickly.

The £150 million from redirected HS2 funding is dedicated to levelling up bus services, with areas across the North and Midlands given extra support for bus services to become more frequent, more reliable, cheaper and easier to use.

Local authorities may use the additional funding to reintroduce evening services to support the night time economy, increase service frequency meaning less waiting time for passengers, introduce new routes to ensure areas previously unconnected are now connected or introduce a Demand Responsive Transport service to improve connectivity in rural areas.

This funding comes on top of the Government’s unprecedented investment of over £3.5 billion for the bus sector since March 2020 to support its recovery from the pandemic, drive improvements to local bus services and encourage more use of buses.

The “Get Around For £2” bus fare cap scheme will also be extended again to continue to help people save money. The cap had been due to rise to £2.50 but will instead remain at £2 and continue until 31 December 2024 thanks to the redirected HS2 funding behind the new Network North plan. This takes total Government investment to cap bus fares at £2 to nearly £600 million.

Since the £2 bus fare cap was introduced across the UK on 1 January 2023, millions of passengers have benefitted from lower fares. The Get Around for £2 scheme has helped cut bus fares

in England outside London by 7.4% between June 2022 and June 2023, with savings even bigger in rural areas where fares have dropped by almost 11%.

According to initial analysis from a recent report published by the Department, the scheme has helped encouraged people to get back on the bus, with almost half of respondents saying the fare cap is the main reason they are using the bus more.

As part of the Network North plan, we announced that we will spend £2.5 billion to fund in full the long-promised mass transit system in Leeds and West Yorkshire and we will allocate a further £4 billion for local transport across the North’s six city regions to improve connectivity in their areas, benefiting millions of people.

Today also sees Yorkshire and Humberside’s Community services for older people and vulnerable passengers receive a 60% funding boost. These “life-saver” services are vital for older and vulnerable people to get to the shops, medical appointments and see loved ones.

The funding increase, made through the Bus Service Operators Grant (BSOG), will help keep fares down and has been hailed by charities and vulnerable passengers who have difficulty using regular buses and rely on community services to get around and combat loneliness.

This boost comes as part of the Government’s nearly £260 million annual BSOG payments to support bus services in England outside of London. This also includes up to £213 million for commercial bus operators and, for the tenth year, £42 million for Local Authorities.

After being invited to tender for the work with the firm well established in the food and drinks market, initial designs and mock-ups sent up to Aberdeenshire to show what was possible impressed. Pattesons then worked with Manchester-based United Creatives and South Wales’ Launch Design to take the trio of intricately designed vessels to market, with seven-figure volumes into production.

The Deep Business Centre gives expanding engineering design consultancy a foothold in the Humber A long-established engineering design consultancy is aiming to build partnerships and generate job opportunities after expanding to the Humber by opening a new office in Hull.

NG-CAD Group is on the doorstep of the region’s onshore and offshore renewable, oil and gas sectors in its new location at The Deep Business Centre where it will also be targeting general industry in a move driven by confidence and curiosity.

ENG-CAD Group was launched 15 years ago by Managing Director David Tucker, an experienced engineer who established the business in the onshore and offshore industries and expanded into sectors including renewables, marine, nuclear, utilities and food.

Graham Manning, Business Development Manager at ENG-CAD, said the company, based in Great Yarmouth, has worked in the Humber area in the past and now feels that the time is right to take a foothold on the estuary.

The company’s key engineering services include structural design and calculations, stress analysis, piping isometrics, site /plant surveying (3D scanning and Total Station), third party inspection, 3D modelling and CAD drawing.

He said: “Having worked previously with a number of businesses in the Hull and Humber area we are aware of the massive opportunities that exist here given the huge amount of ‘all sector’ industry. We also see an appetite for growth and sense that there could be room for another company here to provide the range of technical engineering and survey services that we offer.”

Graham said: “Currently, we have ten core people in the business including structural engineers, design engineers, surveyors and draughtsmen and we also use local contractors where necessary and available, including many from the Humber, Yorkshire, and North East regions.

by East Riding of Yorkshire Council has been running for more than 25 years.

The team operates a weekly waste collection service for nearly 4,000 business customers across the East Riding, including local shops, offices, restaurants, schools, leisure centres and caravan parks.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is one of the country’s top performers when it comes to recycling waste.

The authority in recent years achieved the highest recycling rate in England for domestic waste for three years running and has been honoured with a number of national awards for being environmentally friendly.

Our commercial waste service builds upon those award-winning achievements, offering a topquality service with a high standard of recycling.

The team prides itself on offering a professional service, with flexible, transparent pricing with no hidden costs.

Our friendly approachable team are based in Willerby near Hull, with depots in Carnaby, Hedon, Goole and Market Weighton. Covering the entire East Riding area, our refuse collectors are out on the road five days a week.

There are six dedicated trade vehicles collecting general waste weekly – and the council’s fleet of domestic vehicles collect recyclable waste from customers on a fortnightly basis.

around 1,000 tonnes a month. Almost 1,000 tonnes of recyclable material are also collected each year.

As well as collecting general waste, recycling and clinical waste, the team also offers an event waste collection service.

The team has previously been awarded waste collection contracts for big local events including Driffield Show, the largest event held in the East Riding.

Beal Homes submits plans for £105m development Leading Yorkshire-based housebuilder Beal Homes has submitted plans for a £105m development creating a highly-desirable new community on the south bank of the Humber.

That, in turn, has generated growing demand for high-quality new homes in and around Immingham.

The Port of Immingham is a key gateway for trade to and from Europe and beyond and the area is playing a key role in the Humber’s growing status as a magnet for investment, capitalising on the region’s reputation as the UK’s Energy Estuary.

The site already has outline planning approval for 525 homes, so the new application is seeking consent for the detailed design and layout of the development.

amily-owned Beal has submitted a planning application for more than 500 new homes on a 57-acre site at Immingham in North East Lincolnshire.

The proposed development will provide a range of two, three and four-bedroom homes to support major investment in the area and underlines the company’s commitment to economic development within the region.

The south bank of the Humber is home to a series of blue chip businesses, including Ørsted, Phillips 66, Centrica and Wren Kitchens, with many of them investing in new facilities and projects, creating new, skilled jobs in the area.

East Yorkshire-based Beal has submitted a “reserved matters” planning application to North East Lincolnshire Council for 525 homes, with landscaping, areas of public open space and associated works, on land off Stallingborough Road, close to the centre of Immingham.

The proposed development features a wide variety of homes, from two-bedroom terraced starter homes to four-bedroom detached properties, reflecting local demand and catering for a broad range of homebuyers.

“We propose to deliver this development over coming years, meaning we will be investing millions of pounds into the area year after year, creating new jobs in construction and supporting services.

“The plans are for a wide range of properties, including starter homes that will enable local first-time buyers to take their first step onto the housing ladder.”

Year 9 and 10 students from schools across Northern Lincolnshire, Hull & East Riding are invited to take part in the challenge and to come up with creative ways to support the country’s net zero ambition.

The challenge, that takes place over three rounds, was designed by the Phillips 66 Limited Humber Refinery Early Careers Network and this year’s final will be at the prestigious Waterline Summit, to be held at the Aura Innovation Centre.

Challenge team member Woody Nunn, Phillips 66 Process Engineer commented on last year’s event. This year’s finalists will be invited to showcase their work at this year’s Waterline Summit to be held on Monday the 13th of November, in front of the judges, academics and business leaders from across the region.

The triumphant team will be announced on the main stage, claiming their school a fantastic £5,000 to support STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities and sustainability efforts within the school.

The students will also win a trip to the Phillips 66 Humber Refinery to learn more about their decarbonisation journey, as well as the Phillips 66 London office and a tour of Parliament to see where all the decisions on the UK’s energy transition and decarbonisation are made.

RenewableUK announces winners of the Global Offshore Wind Awards 2023

RenewableUK has announced the winners of the Global Offshore Wind Awards 2023 at a ceremony at the Royal Lancaster London.

he thirteen main awards were made last night across three categories showcasing key aspects of the industry, including People, Skills, Health and Safety, Innovation and Excellence, and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG). Our expert panel of judges for the night was formed by senior industry and government figures from a diverse range of backgrounds.

People, Skills and Health and Safety The first Award of the evening Offshore Wind Health, Safety and Well-Being Award, demonstrating improved health and safety and wellbeing operations in offshore wind, went to RWE Renewables, with the runner up award going to Scottish Power Renewables Health & Safety Team.

Up next the Offshore Wind Energy Skills Award sponsored by ScottishPower Renewables, went to the RWE Technician Career Pathway Scheme for delivering improved skills and competence in offshore wind operations, and the runner-up being X-Academy.

The Future Leader Award sponsored by RWE, went to Lynne McIntosh-Grieve of Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, for displaying exceptional leadership in the industry, Claire Melrose, EDF Renewables UK was the runner-up.

The last award in this category was the Aspiring Leader Award, sponsored

Ørsted uses giant drones to increase efficiency and safety in industry world first

Offshore wind giant Ørsted has become the first offshore wind company in the world to use autonomous giant drones to transport cargo to turbines.

B

uilding on its previous expertise using smaller drones in other countries, Ørsted is now trialling the 58kg drones, with a wingspan of 2.6 metres to transport cargo of up to 68kg, in the UK. The drone size is the equivalent weight of a large baby giraffe, with the wingspan of an albatross.

The use of these drones to deliver cargo to Ørsted’s Hornsea 1 windfarm will reduce costs and time as well as improving operational safety and efficiency. Drones mean less work disturbance as turbines don’t have to be shut down when cargo is delivered. They avoid risk,

making it safer for personnel working on the wind farm and minimise the need for multiple journeys by ship, reducing carbon emissions and climate change impacts. Instead, the drones will be operated from existing crew transfer vessels (CTVs) and Service Operating Vessels (SOVs) which are already on site. Ørsted has used smaller drones for some time with much lighter loads and is now leading the industry in deployment on a larger scale. The company is actively seeking partnerships with the best drone cargo operators and services providers to help grow the supply chain in the UK.

Cabinet approves district heat project to move forward T

Hull City Council’s Cabinet has given the go ahead to the Hull District Heat Network (HDHN), the council’s long-term, cost-saving energy supply project.

he decision means the council will form a Limited Liability Company (LLC) to manage HDHN.

There are a range of benefits for both the city and the council as the project progresses, including supplying reliable and affordable lowcarbon heating.

Alongside this, the company will also create local jobs by employing specialist, skilled workers to ensure HDHN operates efficiently, protecting both the council and customers in the long-term by ensuring a reliable and resilient long-term supply of locally sourced low carbon heat and reducing dependence on fossil fuel.

The LLC will be regulated by Ofgem to ensure it is fully compliant with the latest guidelines.

The Hull District Heat Network is just one of the ambitious projects delivered by the council as it carries out its 2030 Carbon Neutral Strategy and reaffirms the council’s commitment to addressing climate change.

The next phase of HDHN will feature stakeholder engagement through the winter which will begin shortly.

In February 2024, the project’s Full Business Case will be presented, showcasing how the district heat network will make its way to consumers through underground pipes.

It will also detail how each phase will progress and how it will save both the council, and therefore Hull taxpayers, money long-term.

Cllr Jack Haines, the council’s portfolio holder for communities and climate change, said: “This is a project that has fantastic potential and can now be pushed forward.

“Unlike the government nationally, Hull City Council is absolutely committed to ensuring it remains a leading authority when it comes to tackling climate change.

“We are aware first-hand of the effects in can have on our city and it is important we sustain our long-term future, both environmentally and financially.

“At a time when so many people are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis, this is another example of how the council will support them.”

Decarbonisation investment welcome, but faster progress is needed says Logistics UK The creation of Freight Week – aimed at highlighting the essential role logistics plays in the UK economy – and the package of decarbonisation measures announced on 19th October by government is positive says business group Logistics UK, however it urges that progress must be actioned faster if deadlines are to be met.

Kate Jennings, Director of Policy at Logistics UK, comments: “We welcome government’s recognition of the how important freight is for creating new jobs, growing the economy and achieving net zero. It is encouraging to see government making long-awaited progress on its promises to help decarbonise our sector, including announcing the outcome of the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure competition (ZERFD). However ultimately, we need this progress to be faster, and support actioned promptly if we are to meet impending decarbonisation deadlines.

“We very much welcome the Call for Evidence to inform and support the development of the zero emission HGV and coach infrastructure strategy which is due to be published in 2024. We have continued to strongly advocate to government that this infrastructure strategy receives adequate input from industry to make sure, when it is eventually rolled out, it is in the right places to serve the sector in the most efficient manner possible.

“Similarly, Logistics UK has been calling for a review into the Mode Shift Revenue Support (MSRS) scheme which currently disproportionately benefits the rail sector; 2022 research indicated that 95% of the funding from this scheme had been allocated to rail freight. While rail provides strong opportunities for modal shift and must be supported, action must be taken to prevent disadvantaging water freight, which also brings many social and economic benefits. We therefore look forward to inputting into this review.”

The Summit will be held across three days, 13-15 November, at the University’s Aura Innovation Centre – the Humber’s net zero centre, Bridgehead Business Park, Hessle.

Louise Smith, Director of the University’s Aura Innovation Centre, said: “The recent Storm Babet, which caused loss of life, untold damage and closed down the UK’s rail network on shows how the effects of Climate Change are increasingly affecting each one of us – especially here in the Humber where the waterline rising is so evident. We cannot sit back and just catastrophise about it. We do need action, any action is better than no action. The Humber is a very innovative region. It is resilient and has adapted to centuries of change and climate effects. Now, more than ever, we need to bring that innovative thinking and strength through collaboration to the forefront to meet the challenge.

The Waterline Summit will shine a light on the positive action taking place across the region to tackle the biggest challenge the world faces.

The University of Hull has a significant role to play within this through its cutting-edge, renewable energy research and low carbon business support initiatives.

“As a University we have a responsibility to not only transmit knowledge but through our teaching and research to work with innovative businesses (large and small), local and regional government as well as the community to deliver real solutions to meet our net zero targets. We can only do this by working together. Day 1 of the Summit will bring together international speakers, innovative thinkers, academia and industry experts as well as key government figures to discuss the crucial role the Humber region must play as the UK’s biggest carbon emitter with the greatest decarbonisation potential.

The launch event will be opened by keynote speaker, the Rt Hon Chris Skidmore MP, Chair, Net Zero Review and will be followed by a panel discussion. The panel will feature Briony McDonagh, Interim Director of the University’s Energy and Environment Institute. Professor McDonagh will be speaking about the Institute’s cutting-edge research into environmental resilience and energy sustainability in the Humber Region, as well as its global research which has taken place in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, in Africa and in the Amazon River in South America.

The second event on launch day will focus on our regional progress made so far, and will focus on the region’s business community which is making great contributions towards the region’s net zero goals. The event will bring together large and small businesses, such as Smith and Nephew, Groupe Atlantic, Bio D and Willerby, to discuss how innovation

and collaboration is key to driving change. The panel will also include the University of Hull’s Dr Sarah Shaw, Reader in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, who will be highlighting how business support is at the heart of the University’s strategy to tackle the climate crisis.

Dr Shaw will be providing examples of how the University is working with businesses to provide support and guidance – be it from providing knowledge transfer partnerships to carbon mapping.

The second day of the conference will be centred around the theme of “Adaptation and Resilience” through a series of fringe events.

One of these events will see the Energy and Environment Institute partnering with global leaders in sustainable development, Arup on an engaging and interactive session to share and explore new approaches to planning climate adaptation and resilience.

The afternoon session event is delivered by the University’s Knowledge Exchange Team, showcasing Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and how they can help businesses innovate and grow. The Humber Offshore Wind Cluster will be closing the second day with a drinks reception whilst celebrating the success of the last year in its journey to clean growth.

The third, and final, the Energy Transition day will provide an insight into the breadth of opportunities presented by the transition to a net zero economy and the projects and partnerships of all scales being delivered across the region.

The KEF3 data also highlights the University as one of the top performing in the country when it comes to research partnerships and in our work with the public and third sector.

The University has been supporting local growth and regeneration through innovation support ecosystems for regional SMEs via funded programmes with the Flood Innovation Centre, Aura, and SparkFund.

Led by the University of Hull, Aura finds solutions for the challenges facing the region and the world, ranging from technical and operational to economic and societal.

So far, Aura has supported more than 1000 businesses to access low carbon innovation support, helping the region’s ambitious drive to net zero. A further five thousand businesses, individuals and researchers have participated in workshops briefings and events at the Innovation Centre, in Hessle.

SparkFund, a £20 million innovation and grants programme, has supported SMEs in the Humber, York and North Yorkshire to move their business forward through innovation and Research & Development focusing on low carbon. And a total of £3.5 million has been distributed via the Flood Innovation Centre, which has supported 83 SMEs to develop new flood resilience products and services.

In addition, for a decade, the University has been delivering Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs), which unite graduates with business partners across the region, giving them a competitive advantage, increased turnover and entry into new markets. Over two thirds of our graduate associates have been offered permanent positions with the company at the end of their KTP.

Emma Calverley KEF forms the third pillar of assessment of universities’ activities, alongside the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and the Research Excellence Framework (REF) and was developed by Research England to measure the efficiency and effectiveness of knowledge exchange in universities.

It is the third year universities have been benchmarked against seven key areas, providing a picture of how they engage with external partners to contribute both to the economy and society.

University of Hull joins the Turing University Network

The University of Hull has joined the prestigious Turing University Network.

he Alan Turing Institute unites worldclass research, to apply it to national and global challenges, build skills for the future, and inform debate. It is named in honour of Alan Turing, whose pioneering work in theoretical and applied mathematics, engineering and computing is considered to have laid the foundations for modern-day data science and Artificial Intelligence. The Institute’s goals are to undertake world-class research in data science and Artificial Intelligence, apply its research to real-world problems, drive economic impact and societal good, lead the training of a new generation of scientists, and shape the public conversation around data and algorithms.

The network launched as a pilot in April with a cohort of 36 university partners. It has now been announced that a further 29 have joined, taking the total number of universities in the network to 65. This gives a wide scope of opportunities for the University of Hull to forge partnerships and share excellence in the fields of data science and AI. The Turing University Network provides all UK universities with an interest in data science and AI the opportunity to engage and collaborate both with the Institute and its broader networks.

Professor Dhaval Thakker, who led the University of Hull’s bid to join The Turing University Network, believes being part of the network will promote digital innovation across the University and the Humber region.

He explained: “Representing the Hull and Humber region, our inclusion in the network can help broaden the reach of the Turing’s activities in the North of England. We believe that our region has more to gain than most from an increase in digital innovation, given the potential for automation and decarbonisation of our manufacturing industries, as well as the real potential for economic growth in a geographic area which does face challenges.

Participating in the Turing Network will provide us with access to a UK-wide community in which to share ideas, foster innovation and drive collective growth.

Dr Kevin Pimbblet, Director of DAIM at the University, said: “The Centre of Excellence for Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Modelling (DAIM) at the University of Hull is proud to support the successful University bid to join the Turing Network.

DAIM was created in August 2022 and serves as a platform both within the University and to external businesses and stake holders to help create new solutions using the wide range of expertise of our staff and students. A recent example of our work using AI is a Liverpool City Council and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport funded project to analyse the impact of the Eurovision Song Contest held in Liverpool in May 2023.

Through our membership of the Turing Network, we hope to be able to exchange ideas with partners nationwide and build new collaborations.”

There is significant synergy between the research focus of the University of Hull and the network. This is evident in shared commitment to Responsible AI, which emphasises creating AI that is equitable, explainable, trustworthy, and safe. The University’s dedication to Environment and Sustainability aligns well with Turing’s Grand Challenges and Hull’s Strategy 2030, which includes aiming working towards being carbon neutral. Moreover, the collaboration offers substantial opportunities to harness AI in addressing Social Justice, building on research insights from Criminology, Health Sciences, and the Wilberforce Institute for the study of Slavery and Emancipation to tackle social inequalities.

Amy will promote Turing opportunities, programmes, and schemes within the University to maximise our engagement with the Institute.
