Inner Landscapes In this exhibit, Esdaile explores the existential aspects of 2020 – 2021 a year that has been marked by unprecedented uncertainty and upheaval globally. The paintings reflect how humanity has been challenged to look within, reflect and reevaluate personal values.

It has been a time to find tranquility, togetherness and meaning in the midst of chaos. This time of contemplation is expressed in a multiplicity of perspectives in the images varying from the isolation of a Native American on a vision quest, others finding their zen in yoga while a volcano erupts in the background, tribal Africans performing age-old rituals, to urban city dwellers feeling desperate in their need to be out and about, or individuals indulging in the sensual delights of overeating.

Today’s soul-searching is also captured in Esdaile’s more abstract works of the show that reflect the need for open-mindedness. An open-mindedness that connects individuals with the mystery of life and the heart of the cosmos itself. This is a state of neutrality that opens the consciousness for new impressions. Who are we today as humans and where do we go from now? How can we find the light within, the spark of eternal spirit? How can we connect in kindness with each other in a time of division?

Clairvoyance is a theme here, whether it be images of Edgar Casey the sleeping prophet or symbolized in needing to let go of seeing the world through glasses that project the same old images. The paintings encourage us to see the humor in our modern world, whether it be the theatricality of news or our fumbling about as we search for new ways of defining our story as humans.

As we look at Esdaile’s Inner Landscapes, we are invited to go within, find new personal visions and reinvent ourselves.
