Fellow Cattlemen, What a year 2017 was, I know I speak for many when I say I am ready to see what 2018 has instore. Although most all commodity prices this last year made everyone sharpen their pencil, it is very encouraging to watch cattle hold their ground against the “Bears.” While there has been much fundamental news that should depress the cattle market, such has an increasing herd size, trade rumors, and cattle on feed reports, calf prices have not only held strong, but actually increased over last year. This means one thing: the consumer is still loving beef, ANGUS BEEF to be exact. Certified Angus beef announced the marketing of 1.121 BILLION pounds of beef this last fiscal year! As Angus producers we should all be very proud of the consistent quality that we are providing to the market place. It is encouraging to me to hear reports from customers with 100% Black Angus calves that topped the markets from all over the western states, with 100% Walter Angus genetics. We are very excited about this set of bulls that we are offering this year. One thing that I should note is that we were able to keep all 175 bull calves together this summer. I can’t stress enough how important contemporary groups are in order to help achieve maximum accuracy on EPD’s. Having this quality of data helps minimize any surprise changes in EPD’s down the road. Speaking on predictability we have also DNA tested 99% of the bulls in the sale. Most of the accuracy levels on each Genomic Enhanced-EPD is 40% or higher. In the old days it could take up to four years, or even longer to achieve that predictability. Our goal is for you to be able buy these bulls with 100% confidence. As always we tell everyone upfront that we do not sell fat bulls, and again this year it holds true. While our competitors were weaning their calves into the feedlot eating $3.00 corn, our bulls were in the frozen tundra of Walden fighting off the bears and mountain lions. We feel that this is what turns a good bull into a great bull. By not getting them over fat, it allows us to harden their feet, not ruin semen quality, and making them athletic for the long haul. You can tell by many of the pictures that there is a tremendous amount of muscle on each bull, no fat to cover their flaws. If there is ever any questions about the cattle don’t hesitate to call. Driving the science of better breeding There’s little room for error in the cattle business. Producers need the most advanced information to make smart selection decisions, and Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) provides it through genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs). GE-EPDs have become the industry standard for herd improvement, building on decades of science-backed genetic evaluation tools originated and maintained through the American Angus Association®, home to the largest and evergrowing single-breed beef cattle database. EPDs that traditionally contained all pedigree, performance and progeny information now also include results from available genomic, or DNA, tests. Breeders who use genomic technology give buyers access to AGI-generated GE-EPDs that provide: Increased predictability and decreased risk for young and unproven animals due to enhanced accuracy of EPDs Better characterization of genetics for difficult-to-measure performance traits (such as carcass traits, maternal traits and feed efficiency) The ability to make more rapid progress for traits that are important to you, due to: · more accurate selection · easier identification of genetic outliers · the ability to propagate young animals with confidence earlier in their lives In fact, GE-EPDs on unproven animals have the same amount of accuracy as if they had recorded 8-33 calves, depending on the trait. Walter Angus has made a considerably large investment to provide our customers with Genomic-Enhanced EPD’s. We can’t explain enough how important this tool is for cattle producers. From our experience from feeding out our own steers (obtaining carcass data), calving hundreds of heifers, breeding heifers, observing birth, weaning and yearling weights, and even scrotal measurements, is that these GEEPD’s are very accurate. The DNA will also make sure that the sire is exactly who we say he is. For more information there is a page about it to the left that speaks more about it. PAP Testing All bulls in the sale were PAP tested in Walden, Colorado at 8,226 feet, by DR. Tim Holt. Although PAP testing is not 100% guarantee, it is the best tool we have for testing for Brisket Disease. Testing at this altitude puts us in a 95% accuracy for the test, especially in Walden, CO where it is well known that this area is very difficult to avoid the disease. Given the altitude, and conditions that the bulls were tested in, Dr. Holt recommends bulls that test between a 36-45 are suitable for going back to altitude. It is important to remember that bulls that test a 45 could easily test a 42 at 7,200 ft.

First Year Breeding Guarantee In lieu of commercial “loss of use� policy, we would like to offer our own First-Breeding year Guarantee. For Bulls selling for $4,000 or more, and does not complete a full breeding season, we will share in the replacement cost up to 50% of the value of the bull. Breeding season is defined as 90 days after turning out the bulls. 50% of the value of the injured bull, minus salvage value, will be given as credit in a future sale or toward a replacement bull if one is available. All injured bulls must be diagnosed by a veterinarian. Please notify as soon as possible should injury occur and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. All claims must be made by September 1, 2018. -Example 1: An $8,000 bull is injured, a credit of $4,000 minus any salvage value will be given to the buyer. -Example 2: A $6,000 bull is injured, a credit of $3,000 minus any salvage value will be given to the buyer. -Example 3: A $3,500 bull is injured, no credit is given. Driving the science of better breeding There’s little room for error in the cattle business. Producers need the most advanced information to make smart selection decisions, and Angus Genetics Inc. EPDs that traditionally contained all pedigree, performance and progeny information now also include results from available genomic, or DNA, tests.
