Behind the Scenes The magic of Arts + Recreation doesn’t happen spontaneously. There are many hours of training, planning and implementation that go into every detail of every program so that community members and regional visitors can experience high quality, fun and impactful events in Walnut Creek. Enjoy these behind-the-scenes photos from our divisions.

Community Arts Preschool

We believe that a child’s work is play. Our experienced and caring teachers lead by Early Childhood Program Coordinator Rosie (left) photographed alongside Miss Bobbie (teacher) with all other preschool staff provide child-centered, play-based, and arts-integrated experiences inspired by Reggio Emilia practices. You can place your child in a class with two, three, or four year-olds, or in a mixed-age group at 1 of 3 locations – Civic Park, Shadelands or Heather Farm. Each day, your child is immersed in an inclusive, safe, and nurturing environment that promotes their unique social, emotional, intellectual and physical development.

Bingo Board

Programming can’t happen without the support of the Building Maintenance team in the Department of Public Works.

Last minute request was to move the Bingo Board so we could accommodate our senior drop in Bingo program, one of our most robust and popular programs for individuals aged 50 & better.

Front Desk Staff

Open 7 days a week with the mission to provide excellent customer service and the ability to connect with our division in all settings, the Customer Service Team is responsible for all registration and public inquiries for the Arts + Recreation Department. Runners help Special Olympics Northern California raise money and awareness for their cause and those city staff who aren’t quite ready to run in Walnut Creek heat come out to cheer on their coworkers as they pass City Hall.

Exhibition Preview for Bedford Gallery Volunteers

The Bedford offers many enriching volunteer opportunities with no prior knowledge of art or art history required! Volunteering at the gallery is fun and provides an opportunity to make friends, learn about art, and help foster love and appreciation for the arts in our community.

Here, gallery docents get a first look and deep dive into The Sensation of Color with solo artist Erin Fong, providing them with tools and knowledge to lead exhibition tours. Sound interesting?

Young REP 2023 Kick Off

Center REP’s summer acting intensive, Young REP, is celebrating 50 years of inspiring theatre education this summer! Shown here on the first day, students shared their goals for the summer. Atiba - Video

Center for Community Arts partnered with the Contra Costa County Office of Education to film art lessons that will be shared with 4th and 5th grade classes across the county later this year. Here is Community Arts teaching artist, Atiba Thomas, demonstrating her art lesson inspired by Picasso’s abstract portraits.

Public Art Walking Tours

Bedford Gallery offers one hour docent-led walking tours of Walnut Creek’s downtown public art collection every third Saturday, April through November.

Docents are trained by public art specialists and offer information and insights appropriate for all ages. Reservations not required. If you are attending with a group of 6 or more, please email galleryinfo@bedfordgallery.org.

behind the programs

Sandi Smith Grove Yoga Instructor

Karen Fuentes

Ceramics Kiln Technician

Center for Community Arts, a division within Arts + Recreation has one of the largest ceramics and sculpture program in the East Bay. Community Arts’ ceramic studio is open for classes, workshops and open studio hours 7 days a week, serving hundreds of students each quarter.

Karen helps keep the programs and facilities operating smoothly by firing students work, maintaining the studio cleanliness, and trying to always have a smile on my face. Karen has worked for Walnut Creek Arts + Rec for almost 2 years. She always wanted to work for Walnut Creek because she grew up nearby and it felt like home. There’s something special about serving a community you grew up in.

Karen’s ceramic specialty is a combination of hand-building and throwing. She says it’s difficult for her to get started making, but once she does, the surprises along the way are the greatest feeling.

In her free time, she loves travel, go hiking with friends, and hang out with her cat, “CT”. Follow her ceramics journey on social media (Instagram @kf_ceramics)

Sandi Smith-Grove is a Licensed Midwife, Certified Yoga Instructor (RYT200) and a prenatal educator. She began her work with mamasto-be in 1992, the same time she began practicing yoga. She combines two of her passions, yoga and serving expectant mamas, in her Yoga for Pregnancy and Birth workshops.

She believes that the female body is strong and powerful, yet benefits from nurturing and compassion, especially during the season of gestation and change. She began studying with Diane Valentine as part of a healing regime after back surgery, and has completed her 200 hour teaching certification at The Yoga & Movement Center.

She received her certification in Prenatal Yoga from Jane Austin; her Yoga for Healthy Aging certification from Baxter Bell, MD, and completed a Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction program with Nancy Bardacke, CNM. She has integrated yoga and mindfulness principles into her childbirth education classes.

When she is not working or practicing, you can find her in the garden, on the trail, in one of her women’s groups, or reading a good book. Sandi loves teaching the full spectrum of yoga with Walnut Creek Rec including both Baby & Parent Yoga and Chair Yoga. Public Art Showcase Veterans Memorial Plaza Renovation

The City of Walnut Creek has reaffirmed its commitment to honoring veterans by completing a major upgrade to Veterans Memorial Plaza at City Hall. Commissioned to honor the five branches of the American military – Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Marines – the Memorial Plaza commemorates all veterans, past, present and future, who have defended America’s freedom and democracy.

Artist and landscape architect Cliff Garten designed the peaceful and contemplative memorial featuring living trees and grasses, fountain pools, obelisks, and benches, completing it in 2004. Based in Southern California, Garten has installed innovative public art across the country, including another Walnut Creek project, the Liliales illuminated screens on Broadway Plaza garage.

Over the past year and a half, the Arts & Recreation (Public Art) and Public Works departments collaborated on the renovation of Veterans Memorial Plaza, upgrading fountains, repairing paths, and replacing trees and grasses. Mr. Garten’s original design included numerous birch trees planted in a grid pattern to suggest soldiers in formation. But over time, hotter summers, drought, and pest infestation stressed the birches, killing many and compromising the integrity of the plaza design. Working with the City, Garten rethought the landscaping plan and called for Ginkgo biloba trees to replace the dying birch trees. Durable and drought-tolerant ginkgo is a beautiful tree whose leaves turn deep yellow in the fall, so that the plaza artwork will change with the seasons. Beneath the ginkgoes, a field of hardy and attractive Lomandra grasses is planted.

The Veterans Memorial Plaza is a living, breathing work of art. The City’s reinvestment of public funds, labor, and creative thinking assures the Memorial will continue to grow and evolve over decades, honoring our veterans.

Most artists in the exhibition are completely blind, while some are legally blind, but all perceive an image of the physical world in varying degrees. Each photographer brings their inner visions into the seeing world, revealing a visually rich and emotionally complex blend of physical and conceptual artworks.

REGISTRATION POLICIES

CODE OF CONDUCT: Walnut Creek Arts + Rec strives to create an inclusive community and respectfully requests that all people in our programs and spaces (staff, students, teachers, volunteers, and guests) use spaces as intended, be considerate of others, communicate with respect, and act responsibly. We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone for failure to abide by the Arts + Rec Code of Conduct, available at http://bit.ly/ ArtsRecCodeOfConduct.

PRE-REGISTRATION: Pre-registration is required for participation in programs. Please do not attend a program if you have not been registered.

Withdrawals may be done online. Transfers must be done in person or over the phone.

QUALITY ASSURANCE: If, after attending the first class, you are not happy with the quality of the program, call us right away. Tell us what was wrong so we can make it right.

WAITING LISTS: Waiting lists are established once a program has reached maximum enrollment. If space opens, you will be notified via email. You have 48 hours to accept or decline and you must do so online.

CANCELLATION: A program may be cancelled if minimum enrollment is not met. A full refund is available.

If a session is canceled due to weather and no make-up class is offered, a refund will be provided.

MAKE-UP CLASSES: Make-up dates for missed classes will only be granted for class cancellations resulting from inclement weather or from direction of the Arts + Recreation Department.

ADA ACCOMMODATIONS: In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the City of Walnut Creek encourage those with disabilities to participate in our programs. If you have any special needs that may require specific accommodations, please call (925) 295-1490.

PAYMENT & ACCOUNT CREDIT POLICIES: • Fees must be paid in full at time of registration by cash, credit card or check payable to the City of Walnut Creek, unless otherwise stated.

• All payments are processed upon receipt.

• Supply fees are payable to the instructor at the first class.

Please do not include supply fees with your registration fees.

Supply fees are non-refundable.

• If payment plans are offered, customers must provide a credit card for automatic payment processing.
