In my attempt to broaden the book genres I read; I picked up a book called ikigai. This book explores the various People often make their best memories with their friends. WHO IS MAYA ANGELOU? Sharlene Liaw 7 Pankhurst

Maya Angelou is a famous American memoirist, poet, actress, and civil rights activist. She published many books and poems - one of her most well-known pieces of work is ‘I Know Why the Caged Birds Sing’. My favourite piece of work that she wrote was ‘Still I Rise’ which was an inspiring poem about her life.

Early life Maya Angelou was born in Missouri on April 4th, 1928. She was the second child of Bailey Johnson and Vivian Johnson.

Angelou's actual name was Marguerite Annie Johnson, but her younger brother nicknamed her "Maya", established from the word "my" sister. When Angelou was three and her brother was four, their parents' marriage ended, and their father sent them to Arkansas - alone by train - to live with their paternal grandmother, Annie Henderson.

Career In 1951, Angelou married Tosh Angelos (an electrician, a former sailor, and an aspiring musician) even though her mother disapproved. She took modern dance classes at this time and met many dancers and choreographers including Alvin Ailey and Ruth Beckford. Ailey and Angelou formed a dance team calling themselves "Al and Rita” and performed modern dance throughout San Francisco but never became successful.

Death

Angelou married Tosh Angelos (an aspiring musician) despite her mother’s disapproval.

Sadly, Maya Angelou died on May 28th, 2014. Even though she had been in poor health and had cancelled recent listed appearances, Maya Angelou was still working on another book, an autobiography about her experiences with national and world leaders. During her funeral at Wake Forest University, her son (Guy Johnson) stated that despite being in continuous pain due to her dancing career and respiratory failure, she authored 4 books within the final 10 years of her life. The week after Angelou's death,’ I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’ rose to number 1 on Amazon’s bestseller list.

When you ask people what their favourite YouTube video is, you expect to hear about the guy who tried chugging sparkling water without burping, or some silly video of a cat in a sock, not about 4-dimensional maths. Recently, I watched a video lecture on 4Dimensional maths and I can proudly say its my favourite video right now. It’s not anything new but it was definitely the most intriguing thing I've heard in a while. I love maths so when it popped up in my feed it wasn’t surprising, what was surprising was the number of things you learn at such a young age that’s applicable to such a complex concept. In this article I will aim to explain these concepts and encourage you to watch this amazing video. I would recommend you read this article, then watch the video, or if this article is too complex to understand without something visual then I have time-stamped certain parts of the video into the article.

The video in question is the Royal Institute video lecture given by Matt Parker, a mathematician and

comedian. He spent the first half of the lecture going through some cool maths tricks and talking about different shapes which eventually helped place the building blocks to understand harder concepts later in the video. If you are as much of a fan of maths as I am or this just sounds like a really interesting thing, I highly recommend you watch this video. The trick he begins with is to do with cubed numbers and has no association to 4-dimensional maths but I just found it really fun. He told people from the audience to pick a 2-digit number and cube it, he then picked people to say this cubed number and cube rooted it without a calculator which sounds pretty impossible for such a large number. He didn’t end up explaining this trick but I -being an absolute nerd- went and listed out the combinations to find a pattern in order to see how he did it, which I’ll explain at the end if you stick around.

If you have been interested by this article or are fed up of my awful explaining skills then please watch the video it was so amazingly fun and there's a reason it's my favourite video on youtube right now. This is a very brief summary of the many things Matt discusses and the lecture is much more in depth with more topics but I highly recommend it, especially if you're tired of school maths and want some more complex maths (more complex maths is always more fun). Finally, he has a book which I will be reading so maybe I’ll write another article about how amazing that book is at some point.

Lastly, as promised, I’ll explain the cubed number trick from the beginning of the video, you better have watched the lecture by this point though, TRUST ME, its worth it. The only thing you need to memorise are the cube numbers from 1 to 9, all the cubes from 1 to 9 end in one of the digits ie. 1,8,27,64,125,216,343,512,729 – they all end in a digit from 1 to 9 so that all the numbers are used up. Say the cubed number is 74088, you group the last three digits ‘088,’ and the only cubed number that ends in an 8 is 2 cubed, so the ones unit of the original number is a 2. Then you group the first 3 digits ‘074,’ and find between which cubed numbers this falls. 74 falls between 64 and 125 which are 4 cubed and 5 cubed. You then pick the smallest number between the 2 numbers so 4, which will be the number in the ten’s unit.

Therefore 74088 cube rooted is 42.

A torrent of grief overwhelmed her like a tsunami of fire, whisking away hope like a tornado. Her glass heart shattered and fell onto the clear white and the only salvageable pieces were of sorrow and despair. Distraught, she ripped off the necklace that Naomi had given her and threw it into the foggy midst. Her sadness seemed to call Eclipse out from the darkness, and her cat came to comfort her, but it was of no use. Not even when the clouds revealed the moon, which sent fingers of light to console her, did she feel any better, for it was like throwing a droplet of water on an inferno and hoping for it to cool. Her heart was broken, and it was all because she had let Naomi get lost in a world of nightmares.

VICKY OJO 12 MDS When I say the word ‘Guitar’, I'm sure we all think of the same thing; a six-stringed instrument capable of performing chill chord progressions produced by Beabadoobee, to crazy solos such as Eruption’s by the incredible Van Halen - but at the core of (almost) every song there is a groove running through it that holds it all together - the bassline!

As a bassist, I think that the work of some amazing bass-clef experts shouldn’t go unrecognized so here are some recommendations.

Feel free to check out the work of: Paul McCartney (The Beatles) Peter Steele (Type O Negative) And Andy Rourke (The Smiths) But also make sure to show appreciation to incredible female bassists who have fought to make a name for themselves playing an instrument heavily dominated by their male peers such as: Victoria De Angelis (Maneskin) Carole Kaye (The Wrecking Crew) And Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads) It’s never too late to discover a talent you never knew you had - if you’re thinking about learning bass, then go for it!
