I know Walloon Lake. And that’s good for you. What a summer! July and August brought some of the nicest weather I can remember, September seems to be starting out just as nicely. Our lake has so much to offer; restaurants, shops, the bluest of waters, and best of all, the lasting memories made with family and friends. An Original Wallooner
TREVY WARFIELD Long before we waxed our boats, before phones fit in our pockets and we drove in cars to town, Trevy Warfield grew up on Walloon Lake along with my father, Jack Kidd.
While gas and food were rationed and our nation fought a world war, 1940’s Walloon Lake families shared meals and bonded over their love for the lake. And while Trevy and Jack were boyhood friends from the same neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland, their bond was always anchored in ‘Old Walloon.’ “Nobody had electricity or running water in those days,” Trevy told me on a recent afternoon. “There was an artesian well that had a hydraulic pump on it, called a ram, and this pushed the
water up the hill to a tank that we shared between our cottage and your family’s cottage. We could hear the ‘ka-chink, kachink’ as the ram worked all day and night, a familiar sound for those days.” “Two cottages up the hill from ours were the first ones to have electricity, and something even more unusual-an indoor bathtub so the ladies could take baths. There was a bar of soap on the end of every dock for the rest of us.” Lifelong friends, Trevy and Jack, had discovered a love for Walloon Lake that withstood these inconveniences of summering Up North. Those inconveniences would become the fond memories of ‘Old Walloon.’ “To get here from Baltimore, we’d take the train to Cleveland, a boat to Detroit, an overnight train to Indian River, bus service into Petoskey, and then the train to Walloon,” Trevy said. “What today takes us about 12 hours took the better part of three days. Families would gather at the closest hotel for meals, where the simple pleasures of life today - like ice cream and a cold piece of lemon meringue pie were considered luxuries. The Lake Grove Hotel was that place for us.” Trevy recalled.

“Everything was on-site,” Trevy said. “The Lake Grove Hotel even milked their cows in the barn out back.”

FAMILY FUN ON WALLOON LAKE TOMMY KIDD 2004, ANN & WALLY KIDD 1964
Trevy and my father worked for John Speelman, owner of the Lake Grove Hotel, in the hayfield between Lake Grove Road and Lake Grove Trail. “We’d take the wagon, pulled by a team of horses, down to the barn, which had a pulley at the top. Jack and I would be there with a rope, and we’d load the hay on the hitch. The horses would come up, and we’d load the hay up into the barn.” When they weren’t cutting hay, Trevy and Jack found and repaired a small boat with a big flywheel engine. They’d park at the Lake Grove Hotel and take guests for rides around the lake for a nickel. “Unfortunately, we didn’t realize how much voices travel at night on the lake. When we’d tell off-color jokes, we would soon discover everyone on the shore was listening, as we’d hear about it the next day.” Trevy reminisced. The boys were mischievous beyond their jokes. South of where Camp Michigania sits were two summer camps, a boys’ and a girls’, separated by a gulley and sharing a shoreline. Jack Kidd and Trevy, along with friends John Worcester and Tom Hunter, took two canoes and paddled across the lake from the Worcester’s cottage to the girl’s camp, Camp Huntington.
“We set off cherry bombs underneath the girl’s cabins, and I’ve never heard such language in all my life as I did from those gals,” Trevy said. Trevy and Jack were pretty good with the boats. They raced sailboats on the west arm every weekend, and almost always won - that is until a young Peg Ratliff teamed up with Ted McCutchen, builder of the now-famous 17s and an expert sailor. “All of a sudden Peg and Ted were winning every race,” Trevy said. “So one night, before the next race, Jack and I swam out to their 17 and tied a giant bucket on the bottom of the keel. Of course, We returned to the top as victors during the next day’s race.” The world was a smaller place back then. With no TVs, no computers or cell phones, the enjoyment of simple summers at the lake must have been magical. They did not realize that in this century, we would take to our cottages to strive for a return to the simplicity of such things as an early morning walk or the quiet cut of a sailboat through the waters in search of our own ‘Old Walloon.’ —WJK
