WALLINGFORD FAMILY YMCA 2022 ANNUAL REPORT

A MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERS

Dear YMCA Friends,

As we reflect back on the year 2022, we are thankful and fortunate for the opportunity to make an impact on the Greater Wallingford Community. Our organization is driven by our strategic priorities of serving families, supporting seniors, redefining membership, fostering partnerships and being a best in class employer. Our community partners, volunteers, staff and members work together to strengthen the foundation of the community through programs, services and relationships that build a healthy spirit, mind and body.

After two long years of healing and rebuilding our organization, we celebrated 77 years of service to the community. The event was highlighted by proclamations of support and gratitude from our Federal, State and Local leaders as well as testimonials from our founding families that have been a part of our organization for over seven decades. We continue to be a leader in the community in support of quality and affordable childcare, preventing accidental drownings through our safety around water and swim lesson programs and providing summer and out of school enrichment programs which saw record enrollments this past year.

As our community continues to heal and more families attend programs and services and neighbors connect at the YMCA. We have a responsibility to provide accessible, welcoming, purposeful and updated facilities that will support the health, recreation and social needs for all. In 2022, the YMCA, thanks to state, corporate and individual financial support, was able to replace its deteriorated East Side YMCA parking lot and renovate its 60 year old Natatorium and Lap Pool.

As we look to the future, we are excited to announce four main priorities:

• Our new partnership with the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA to provide programs and services to the residents of the town of North Haven.

• Continued renovations to our 70 year old East Side YMCA that will include structural, accessibility, privacy and updated improvements to our locker room facilities.

• Rotary/YMCA Teen Center improvements along with Teen programming initiatives with a goal of serving at least 25% of youth grades 5 through 12, thanks to financial support of federal ARPA funds.

• Our vision of bringing an Aquatics Center to the West Side YMCA. We have raised approximately 50% of our goal and need the support from our community to make this a reality!

Our YMCA continues to be a family, built on the foundation of our mission and in support of the community.

Stay Safe and Healthy,

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

OUR MISSION

As a charitable organization, our mission is to strengthen the foundation of the community through programs, services and relationships that build a healthy spirit, mind and body.

We aim to be an effective resource and influential community partner by building meaningful, caring relationships and promoting healthy, productive lifestyles for generations.

OUR COMMITMENT

Over 78 years ago, the Wallingford Family YMCA opened its doors to welcome our community in its collective pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. Day after day, year after year, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to delivering lasting personal and social change to every individual, regardless of ability. Pursuits develop and needs evolve, yet our responsibility to bring together and strengthen our community has endured with clarity and purpose.

Our Y has been a cornerstone of the community since 1944. We have woven the story of how individuals and families learned to swim, prepared for school through early childcare programs, were safe and nurtured through before & after school programs, adopted healthy habits and rehabilitated from the discomfort of chronic disease. With two locations in Wallingford, it is a hub of wellness where 8,574 members come together to collectively strengthen mind, body and spirit. Each year, over 10,000 people come through the doors to connect with their "Y Family" in pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. Today, our community seeks solutions to complex challenges as individuals pursue the same goals of healthy mind, body and spirit. The Y will respond with the same unwavering commitment to community that inspired the establishment of our organization.

OUR CORE VALUES

Our core values drive everything our staff & volunteers do to live out our mission and make a meaningful and long lasting impact in our greater Wallingford community.

By holding ourselves accountable to build character around our core values, we build healthy spirit, mind and body FOR ALL.

CARING

We demonstrate sincere concern for others, their needs and well-being.

RESPECT

We treat others as we would want to be treated and value the worth of every person

HONESTY

We tell the truth and demonstrate reliability & trustworthiness.

RESPONSIBILITY

We do what is right and are accountable for our choices & actions

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

All kids deserve an opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. We believe in the potential of youth and teens and see every interaction as an opportunity for learning and youth development, grounded in our YMCA core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. From cradle to career, the Y provides all youth with the tools and resources they need to succeed in life.

Through our early child care at our YMCA Learning Communities at Choate & Masonicare, we provide experiences to help entire family units cope, grow, communicate and care for each other. We maintain and strengthen what starts at home, giving all families the support they need to succeed.

Our School Age Growth & Enrichment (SAGE) program is located in all 8 elementary schools and offers safe, fun and engaging care before & after school. Enrichment & Leadership for Middle School (ELMS) provides after school activities and educational enrichment for students from both Wallingford middle schools.

Swimming is a life skill and youth swim lessons help children build confidence by floating, putting their faces in the water, kicking, learning arm strokes and more. To increase water safety across Wallingford, we run our Safety Around Water program to help kids learn skills to be safe around water.

Children thrive in our youth sports programs, as they learn confidence and teamwork. From Munchkin Soccer to Youth Dodgeball, there is something at the YMCA to get every kid active, no matter what their interest. The Wallingford Family YMCA Dolphins Swim Team helps swimmers of all abilities reach their highest potential. Every member of the team develops commitment, dedication, teamwork & a love of swimming.

Camp Ulbrich has it’s more successful year yet, with over 375 kids making friends, having fun and experiencing the adventure of a lifetime at camp. With STEM taught by CT STEM Academy, swim lessons, all-camp competitions, trips to Bertini Park and more, Camp Ulbrich always offers campers the opportunity to meet & overcome new exciting challenges.

In Upward Bound, students in grades 4-12 and recent graduates, grow & develop in a constructive environment with positive role models. Youth are challenged to reach past their limitations with decision-making opportunities, recreational activities, and positive self-expression. In doing so, our hope is that they will grow & learn about themselves in a multitude of aspects in their lives, becoming better equipped with the life skills needed when faced with everyday challenges. The goal of the Upward Bound program is to create an atmosphere where kids feel safe, valued and free to express themselves.

HEALTHY LIVING

We help individuals & families build and maintain healthy habits for spirit, mind & body in their daily lives. We provide programs & activities that promote wellness, reduce risk for disease and help others reclaim their health, for kids, adults, seniors and families. These programs and everything else the Y does are in service of building a stronger, healthier Wallingford every day.

Health is more than getting your heart rate up - it’s about building community while you do it. The Y is a place to make friends, network and more. With brand new, state of the art equipment at both branches, we offer personal training and a mix of group exercise classes to suit the needs and fitness levels of everyone in Wallingford.

Annual events, such as Miracle on 81 South Elm Street and the Easter Egg-stravaganza, give parents & children much needed free family time to bring them closer.

LiveSTRONG at the YMCA is a physical activity & well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. It offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person.

Fit-to-Go is our response to the growing youth obesity crisis. Elementary & middle school youth learn about healthy living & nutrition, developed a focused & realistic workout program they could stick with, had tons of fun doing healthy activities, made new friends and felt better about themselves.

With Race 4 Chase, we provide kids with a safe, healthy non-competitive environment to discover the sport of triathlon. They get expert instruction in swimming, cycling, running, strength training and flexibility, and also learn the fundamentals of good nutrition, under the supportive guidance of coaches. Race 4 Chase strives to empower kids to reach their full potential. It brings together kids from all different backgrounds and educates them on how to adopt a healthy lifestyle, coaches them to develop a foundation of athletic skills, and inspires them to aim high in sports and in life.

We are proud to have partnered with Hartford Healthcare to provide COVID-19 vaccine clinics to ensure that all members of our community could receive their vaccines & boosters. We also hosted seven American Red Cross Blood Drives, potentially saving over 500 lives.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

We know that when we work together, we move individuals, families and communities forward. The Y responds to Wallingford’s most pressing needs by developing innovative, community-based solutions to help those in need to reach their full potential. We are also committed to inspiring a spirit of service by uniting individuals from all walks of life to participate in and work for positive social change.

Everything we do at the Y does is in service to make ourselves and our community better. From athletics, to education, health services and safe spaces, we fill the gaps where society falls short because we believe everyone deserves the chance to thrive.

Through our Community Support Campaign, we continue to raise funds for our Membership for All financial assistance program that ensures our doors are open to all to who need us the most. We are proud of our heritage and commitment to make our character-building, family-enriching programs available to everyone in our community. Annually, we receive support from hundreds of members, community leaders and businesses who believe in our purpose. Through Membership for All, these funds are distributed on a sliding scale to those with a documented need in our community. Our goal is to never turn anyone away because of an inability to pay.

With the Community Health Alliance, we help advocate & promote healthy living to improve the overall quality of life for Wallingford. We strive to enhance the importance of a healthy lifestyle, build relationships by focusing on the leading health issues facing this country, strengthen the capacity for coalition building and increase the community's ability to promote policy & environmental changes that encourage healthy living.

The COVID-19 global pandemic has amplified the disparities in life outcomes that marginalized communities, especially communities of color face. These disparities are a direct result of current systems and policies that perpetuate historic oppression and systemic racism. We can be most effective in our communities when we recognize intersectionality and that each individual’s dimensions of diversity influence how they cope with social isolation; chronic stress and trauma; as well as access to employment, health care, safe & affordable housing, food, education and other critical needs.

The Y is focused on creating equitable and sustainable solutions that address both the immediate needs of the community and the systemic root causes that lead to inequities. Organizations such as the Y are built on people – without individuals at all levels having the same understanding of diversity, inclusion and equity – the organization cannot begin to effectively strengthen communities. We must be mindful of others and respectful to all.

In 2022, we raised $248,896 and every dollar donated has a lasting impact on the people right here in our community.

Upward Bound helps students in grades 4-12 grow & develop in a constructive environment with positive role models. Youth are challenged to reach past their limitations with decision-making opportunities, recreational activities, and positive self-expression. The goal of Upward Bound is to develop social skills, analytical thinking and self-esteem by creating an atmosphere where youth & teens feel safe, valued and free to express themselves.

From newborns at both of our YMCA Learning Community centers to 8th graders in Enrichment & Leadership for Middle School, our child care programs provide youth with the tools and resources they need to succeed in life. We provide experiences to help entire family units cope, grow, communicate and care for each other.

Every summer, children from ages 4 to 15 build character, form lifelong friendships and experience the adventure of a lifetime at Camp Ulbrich. With STEM, swim lessons, all-camp competitions and more, Camp Ulbrich gives campers the opportunity to overcome new & exciting challenges.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a physical activity & well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. The YMCA’s Safety Around Water program teaches kids water safety skills that help reduce the risk of drowning and builds confidence in and around water. We have partnered with the Ulbrich Boys & Girls Club and the Spanish Community of Wallingford to provide this program to youth in our area.

Our Parkinson’s Water Aerobics class is specifically designed to keep individuals with Parkinson's mobile and fit.
