I was one of those people who thought yoga wasn’t for me —

I wasn’t flexible enough, I couldn’t sit still that long, it seemed too new age-y for me. Then Brenda introduced me to her friend, Veronica Torres Hazley, who owns V12 Yoga downtown near Farmer’s Market. I tentatively signed up for a month of classes last November. At 5:30 on a Monday evening, I stepped into the beautiful second story studio painted a deep crimson red. The setting sunlight flooded the windows and made the dark wood floors gleam. The air was scented with light incense.

The class was challenging, but the teacher kept telling us to honor our bodies, that whatever we could do was right for each of us—and always reminding us to breathe. I walked away a convert to the practice of yoga. The breath, that’s what I love. It helps my busy mind feel calm; it keeps me in the present.

I’m still going to V12 and it may be the best thing I’ve ever done health-wise.

This zine, The Wallflower Issue 11 is dedicated to Health. Our creative teams came up with a variety of ways to capture this theme—from diet and exercise to mental health and self-image. This zine is a lot of work, but I continue to be inspired by our creative community.
