STUDENT LIFE

PRESIDENT

FROM THE DR. VICKI KAROLEWICS

As we reflect on the 2025–2026 academic year, I am filled with tremendous pride in what the Wallace State family has accomplished—and even greater excitement about where we are going next. This has been a year of remarkable momentum. Wallace State achieved record enrollment, celebrated more than 1,650 graduates who earned over 2,800 degrees and certificates, expanded high-demand academic and workforce programs, strengthened partnerships with universities and employers, and continued an unprecedented period of investment in facilities and opportunities for our students. Yet the most meaningful measure of our success is not how much we have grown. It is what that growth makes possible for the people and communities we serve. That commitment to transforming lives earned Wallace State national recognition once again as one of only ten finalists for the 2027 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. This marks our second consecutive selection among the nation’s Top 10 community colleges, following our recognition as the national Rising Star in the previous Aspen Prize cycle. It is an extraordinary affirmation of the work our faculty and staff have undertaken over many years to improve student success, strengthen pathways to careers and university transfer, and create greater social and economic mobility for our graduates. Across the college, that commitment is evident everywhere. Our Nursing program earned its third designation as a National League for Nursing Center of Excellence, placing Wallace State among an exceptional group of nursing programs nationwide. Our students brought home 43 medals from the Alabama SkillsUSA competition, including 16 gold medals. We expanded opportunities through new and emerging programs such as Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant, Barbering, and Bakery and Pastry Arts while continuing to align programs with the evolving needs of our region. 1

STUDENT LIFE

At the same time, we are investing boldly in the future. With major construction and renovation projects underway, new facilities taking shape, and innovative initiatives designed to remove barriers such as housing and childcare, we are creating a college prepared not simply for the students of today, but for generations of students to come. Our reach extends far beyond our campuses. Through workforce training, employer partnerships, university transfer agreements, Adult Education, dual enrollment, community programs, and initiatives focused on working adults, Wallace State continues to serve as a powerful engine of opportunity and economic development for our region. Our participation in the Aspen Institute’s Unlocking Opportunity initiative and the national Back on Track initiative further challenges us to look beyond completion alone—to ensure that the education our students receive leads to meaningful careers, family-sustaining wages, successful transfer bachelor’s attainment, and lives of greater possibility. And this year, the Wallace State story reached an even broader audience through The College Tour, giving viewers across the country an opportunity to meet our students and experience the talent, determination, innovation, and sense of community that make this college so special.

None of these accomplishments happens by accident. They are the result of extraordinary people working together with a shared belief in the transformative power of education. To our students, thank you for trusting Wallace State with your dreams and your future. To our faculty and staff, thank you for the talent, compassion, innovation, and commitment you bring to this work every day. And to our alumni, employers, educational partners, donors, elected officials, and communities, thank you for believing in Wallace State and investing alongside us in the people we serve. We have much to celebrate. But at Wallace State, excellence is never a destination. We are building on our successes, raising our expectations, and creating even greater opportunities for our students and communities.

Together, we’re going Next Level. Dr. Vicki P. Karolewics President

HONORS

ASPEN

National Distinction: Wallace State Named a Top 10 Finalist for the Prestigious Aspen Prize Solidifying its position among the most elite institutions of higher education, Wallace State Community College has once again been named one of just ten finalists nationwide for the 2027 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. This marks the second consecutive cycle that Wallace State has achieved Top 10 finalist status, building upon its previous recognition as the national Rising Star winner for the 2025 cycle. To secure this elite placement, Wallace State advanced through a rigorous national elimination process. The multi-year journey began in October 2025, when the Aspen Institute evaluated nearly 1,000 community colleges nationwide, naming Wallace State to the initial pool of the top 200 institutions invited to apply. Demonstrating consistent excellence, the college successfully advanced to the exclusive list of 25 national semifinalists in April 2026 before securing its final position among the nation’s top ten elite institutions. This national recognition reflects Wallace State’s exceptional performance in credential completion, university transfers, and post-graduation employment. By prioritizing student economic mobility and family-sustaining wages, the Aspen Prize reinforces the strength of our career pathways. Moving forward, national experts will conduct on-campus site visits in fall 2026, ahead of the winner announcement in April 2027.

“

Wallace State is honored to be recognized as one of ten finalists in the 2027 cycle of the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. Wallace State’s mission is to provide education that transforms lives and communities, and we accomplish that mission by equipping and empowering our students to harness the power of opportunity to make their lives better. Wallace State’s faculty and staff have, for years, engaged in reforms designed to improve student success toward social and economic mobility, and this finalist designation is a testament to the quality of their results-oriented work.” - Dr. Vicki Karolewics, President

major

SUSTAINED DISTINCTION: THREE-TIME NATIONAL CENTER OF EXCELLENCE The Wallace State Community College Department of Nursing Education has once again been designated a national Center of Excellence by the National League for Nursing (NLN). Originally making history in 2016 as the first program in Alabama to earn this honor, this selection marks the third time the college has received the prestigious designation. This milestone places Wallace State in an incredibly select echelon of higher education, as it stands as one of only 21 nursing programs across the entire nation to secure the honor for the 2025–2030 cycle. To achieve this coveted distinction, the program successfully navigated a stringent nationwide evaluation, during which an independent committee thoroughly reviewed comprehensive evidence of the college’s sustained commitment to academic innovation, strict instructional standards, and advanced, evidence-based teaching practices.

13

Formally awarded under the category of “Enhancing Student Learning and Professional Development,” the accolade underscores a deeply embedded institutional culture of continuous improvement. According to Nursing Department Chair Deborah “Pepper” Hoover, the recognition directly reflects the tireless, collaborative efforts of students, faculty, and clinical partners working in tandem to elevate modern healthcare training. As Wallace State President Dr. Vicki Karolewics noted, this national distinction serves as a powerful testament to the faculty’s unwavering commitment to student success and professional excellence. By continuously setting the benchmark for nursing education in Alabama and beyond, the program reinforces its vital workforce pipeline, highlighting Wallace State’s innovation, academic rigor, and dedication to preparing the next generation of highly capable healthcare leaders.

National Commendation: Entered into the U.S. Congressional Record Wallace State’s track record of excellence reached the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, where the college was officially commended by Congressman Robert Aderholt in the Congressional Record. This national tribute honors Wallace State’s outstanding achievements in academic instruction and career preparation under the leadership of Dr. Vicki Karolewics. Having this milestone permanently etched into federal history by key leadership reflects the college’s immense value to the community, highlighting its strategic vision and its role as a premier model for community colleges nationwide.

We have certainly had a wonderful year at the college with our distinction as a Rising Star by the Aspen Institute, setting records for enrollment and seeing hundreds of students cross the stage in graduation ceremonies.” - Dr. Vicki Karolewics, President

Demonstrating a profound commitment to those who serve, Wallace State has earned the prestigious 2026–2027 Military Friendly® School designation. This national benchmark honors institutions that dedicate exceptional resources to ensure the academic and career success of veterans, active-duty service members, and military families. The Transfer Center assists students in ensuring that credits earned at Wallace State transfer to their chosen university. It also provides information about transfer scholarships, connects students with representatives at their destination institution, and offers additional resources to support a successful transition.

“

One of our goals is to increase the transfer opportunities for our students. We are now much more focused on the success of students post-transfer: what are they earning, how long it takes them to graduate upon transfer and, ultimately, what kind of life they lead afterward. So, with that, we are very grateful to our partner universities for providing greater opportunities for our students.” - Dr. Vicki Karolewics, President
