A Message from the President Welcome to spring semester at Wallace State Community College! As you look through our many offerings, you will see classes that meet every preference for learning – day, evening, weekend, on campus, and online. Our new fully online Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees are increasingly popular for students whose busy lives make travel to campus difficult. These online degrees are transferable, and complement our online Associate in Applied Science degrees in Health Information Technology, Business Education, and Computer Science, as well as many more online classes noted in these pages. Students on campus are taking advantage of our unique Learning Community classes in large numbers, and finding the opportunities for forging friendships with students across disciplines and in shared activities have benefits beyond the classroom. Learning community courses are offered in a variety of programs during the 9:30 a.m. time period, and include activities such as sporting events, theatre productions, film screenings, museum visits and other events. Several new programs were also recently added to our offerings including a new Poultry Science partnership with Auburn University, new courses in Hospitality Management, a new Engineering Technology program, and new Entrepreneurship curriculum. Tutoring is also available to students through the English, Math, Biology, Computer Science, and Student Support Services departments. Student success is always our focus, and that is why the Aspen Institute designated Wallace State as one of the top 120 community colleges in America, why Community College Week ranked Wallace State among the “Top 50 Associate Degrees: Health Professions and Related Clinical Sciences” in the United States, why Wallace State leads the System in graduation rates, and why the college has joined the national Achieving the Dream initiative. Be one of Us this semester as we celebrate the opening of our new state-of the-art School of Nursing and Center for Science, Arts in April, championship softball and baseball, and the many other activities spring has to offer. We look forward to serving you! Vicki Hawsey Karolewics President

Ready to Graduate?

Congratulations on reaching your destination on this educational journey! Everyone at Wallace State is extremely proud of your accomplishment and wishes to recognize you accordingly. In order to properly award your degree, we must ensure that all degree requirements have been satisfactorily met and all fees and holds have been cleared. Please follow the instructions below to ensure that process is properly completed. We strongly encourage you to participate in the Commencement ceremony in May. College graduation is an honor that you have worked diligently to receive, and we hope that you will allow your instructors, family, friends, and fellow students to properly recognize your achievement. Steps to Successfully Apply for Graduation: 1. Download the Graduation Application from www.wallacestate.edu/graduation. 2. Log-in to your MyWallaceState account and print out an unofficial

transcript and DegreeWorks audit. 3. Schedule an appointment with your advisor to perform a degree audit and confirm that you have met or will meet all graduation requirements. Bring your transcript! 4. Ensure that all holds are clear and any outstanding fees and charges have been paid. 5. Submit your completed graduation application packet – graduation application, unofficial transcript, and DegreeWorks audit – to the cashier’s office before the graduation application deadline. The cashier is located on the Mezzanine level of the Bailey Center. 6. Pay the cashier the appropriate graduation fee: $60 for first-time graduates or $15 for previous WSCC graduates. There is no fee to have a degree recorded on your academic transcript. Summer Graduation Applications are due by March 7th. Visit www.wallacestate.edu/graduation for more information.

Learning

Community A Wallace State Learning Community, or “LC”, is a group of students (usually one 9:30 course designated “LC” in the catalog) who participate in organized, group-learning outside of the classroom. Students in a LC share common experiences centered on their academics and community, achieve a deeper understanding of their course’s subject matter, build relationships with one another, and learn together.

Sign-up for courses designated “LC” and you’ll attend campus and community events as part of your class. Most LC events happen during class-time, from 9:30-10:45. LC events may include viewing a film, attending a performance or game, and/or listening to a guest speaker. You’ll learn outside of the classroom, have the opportunity to work with your classmates, and apply what you know.
