S T. JOE RIVER
The St. Joe River, more famously known as the “shadowy St. Joe,” is one of the region’s finest for the whitewater, fishing, swimming, camping and hiking it offers. It flows from the high mountains into Lake Coeur d’Alene, with 60 miles of the river above Avery part of the National Wild and Scenic River system; about 30 miles of these upper stretches offer premier whitewater rafting or kayaking during the spring run-off season. The river is renowned as well among fly fishermen, and with literally dozens of parks and trails throughout the basin there is excellent camping, picnicking and hiking.
UPPER GLIDDEN LAKE
The Upper Glidden Lake trailhead is on the Idaho Montana border up the road from the lower lakes road. The trail drops slightly along the way, before it ascends gently to the Upper Lake. As you turn off the trail to the right, the lake is about 200 feet ahead.
LOWER GLIDDEN LAKE
This lake is absolutely beautiful with heavily forested alpine mountains surrounding the lake. Wildlife abound with brown and black bear (Grizzlies as reported), Elk, Deer, Mountain Lions, a variety of foul, etc. Rainbow and Brook Trout inhabit this lake. Motors are not allowed on this lake, which I’m sure the wildlife appreciate. There is a primitive boat launch. Hiking in this area is, of course, spectacular. This lake is 1600 feet long and 250 to 400 feet wide. Varies from 10 to 20 feet deep.

NORTH FORK OF THE COUER D’ALENE RIVER
The “North Fork” is a dry fly fisherman’s paradise where Westslope Cutthroat rise to dries from late winter until late fall. As winter thaws out hatches of midges, BWO’s, Nemoura Stones, March Brown Mayflies, and the famous Skwala Stones get fish feeding on the surface.
S T. REGIS RIVER (Montana) Though not as popular as some of the larger rivers in western Montana, anglers hankering after pristine waters in stunning mountain landscapes will enjoy fishing the St. Regis for cutthroat trout in the 12” – 15” range. In summer, tie a grasshopper or Madam X to the end of your fly line. Be sure to check with Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks for fishing regulations and licensing information.
T HE CLARK FORK RIVER
A majestic waterway meandering through the breathtaking landscapes of western Montana, weaves a tale of nature’s resilience and human connection. Originating from the rugged peaks of the Silver Bow and Flint Creek Mountains, this iconic river embarks on a journey that mirrors the region’s rich history and ecological diversity.

P O P U L A R AT T R AC T IO N S HIAWAT HA T RAIL
The Route of the Hiawatha is a 15-mile gravel path with a notable feature: it passes through a 1.6-mile tunnel cut through a mountain. While the other rail to trails listed above are free for use, the Route of the Hiawatha is operated by Lookout Pass Ski Area and requires a trail pass ($10 for adults, $6 for children 6-13 years old). The ski area also operates a shuttle, allowing bikers to cruise the path downhill without needing to climb back to their car. The Route of the Hiawatha and the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes have both been inducted into the Rails-to-Trails Conservany Hall of Fame. Whether on foot, bicycle or ski, Idaho’s rail to trails are perfect for your next adventure.
T RAIL of the COUER D’ALENES
Sixty-nine spectacular miles of paved rail trail connect Plummer and Mullan in northern Idaho. While great for walking, running and skateboarding, the Irail of the Coeur d’Alenes is best known for its smooth and gentle grade for biking. You’ll encounter plenty of scenery along the route. There are opportunities to see wildlife and birds, learn about mining history and experience forests, prairies and lakes.
PULASKI T RAIL
The Pulaski Tunnel Trail (five minutes from Wallace, ID) traces part of the route that Edward Pulaski’s crew followed during their escape from the 1910 fires. The trail’s two-mile course brings hikers to an overlook across the creek from the Nicholson mine adit - better known as the Pulaski Tunnel - where “Big Ed” Pulaski saved all but six of his 45man firefighting crew in August of 1910. The site’s harsh history is now buffered by a thick green cloak of spruce and fir; the West Fork of Placer Creek cascades down the ravine. Interpretive signs along the trail tell of the calamitous summer of fire and the people who suffered its scars.

T HE SIERRA SILVER MINE TOUR
is dedicated to educating current and future generations as to the culture, history and contemporary practices of hard-rock mining in the Coeur d’Alene Mining District. We accomplish this by providing an underground experience for our patrons, guided by retired miners, who provide: first-hand accounts, historically and technically accurate narratives, explanations of exhibits, and give live demonstrations of the operation of pneumatic powered mining machinery. Additionally, on the way to and from the mine our trolley drivers provide a tour of Wallace and factual narratives of local historical events.
T HE OASIS BORDELLO MUSEUM
building housed an active bordello until 1988 when the occupants hastily left town leaving personal items, furnishings, food in the cupboards, and even the groceries still sit in a grocery bag on the kitchen counter. A local business man bought the building in 1993 from the now out of business madam. It has remained as they left it and was opened as a museum. The guided tour explains the rushed departure through information gathered from former maids, clients and even the girls themselves. The tour is appropriately presented for all ages. Seasonal hours: Mon.-Sat. 10am–5pm, Sun. 11am–3pm.
