NOISE. IT’S ONE OF the biggest renter complaints there is.

Sometimes people are sensitive – they can’t handle the slightest bit of noise. Sometimes people don’t realize that their arguing, high-end sound system and non-stop barking dog are affecting the people on the other side of the wall. Whether it’s a screaming baby or the upstairs neighbour who always wears hardsoled shoes, it can definitely impact your happiness if noise is keeping you from being comfortable in your own home.

I’ve lived in many different types of rentals, and I have a few helpful hints if you want to rent yourself some peace and quiet.

Choose your rental carefully. This can be a toughie in a tight rental market, but there are definitely a few types of apartments that are more likely to provide some extra silence.

Purpose-built rental buildings and condos have building codes that incorporate sound control. Some buildings are more sound-proof than others, though.

Concrete construction is best. It’s a natural sound reducer. Vibrations are muted so sound doesn’t travel.

When picking a unit, the corner is quietest because it only shares one wall with one neighbour. The top floor is best for the same reason. The walking/dropping/chair dragging, tap-dancing noises from above are some of the worst. Generally sounds transfers from the floor above you to your ceiling and into your home worse than from below where no contact is made.

Basement apartments in residential homes tend to be bad for upstairs noise. Apartments above stores are great for quiet nights – unless the business below is a bar with a DJ that will be open all hours of the night!

Of course, you can always talk to the neighbour to keep it down, but renting the right kind of apartment will minimize the problem from the start. If you’re ready to move, let us help. Contest gives kids a chance to help build more Habitat for Humanity homes

elementary school students, sharing their stories may give them the power to help make the world a better place for those who don’t have a safe, dependable and affordable space they can call home.

For the 11th year, Genworth Canada has launched its Meaning of Home contest to give grade 4, 5 and 6 students the opportunity to share their stories, videos and poems about what home means to them in support of Habitat for Humanity and local Habitats in communities across the

country. The winning student will be awarded a $50,000 donation toward a Habitat build of their choice, in addition to a $1,000 donation to their school.

There are also 10 second-place grants of $5,000 toward the winner’s local Habitat, plus for every entry received, Genworth will make a $10 donation to local Habitats from coast to coast.

“I believe it is important that our youth recognize the power they have to help change the world we live in not just tomorrow, but today as well,” says Mark Rodgers, president and CEO, Habitat for

Humanity Canada. “Genworth Canada’s Meaning of Home contest allows students the opportunity to think about and to articulate what a home means to them.”

Since 2007, Genworth Canada’s Meaning of Home contest has provided more than $1 million in funding to Habitat for Humanity across Canada. The contest began Oct. 10 and ends Nov. 30, 2017.

WINNIPEG’S EXCHANGE DISTRICT

is historic and funky and on the edge of art, architecture and commerce. Located between Notre Dame and Ross Avenue from Adelaide to Main Street and across Main, through the Forks near the Red River, the Exchange is alive with culture and currency.

With established venues for entertainment, the area is always lively. It is home to the far out Fringe Festival, which hosts wacky plays in intriguing locations; the Jazz festival, which boasts beautiful music; and Old Market Square with its terra cotta

structures surrounding City Hall.

In The Exchange, the commoners are celebrated on the common grounds. Albert Street ends with a view of the stage at the park. Store owners open their doors during business hours only to have the clubs close theirs because they’re full.

Residents in the Exchange District range from semiretired lovers of culture to 30-something film buffs, but the main demographic for this area is quite distinct: singles in their late thirties with a slightly above average income. Since any locale

And that!” I’ll admit, when I moved into my first apartment, I got excited and despite budget restraints (zero budget), I went a little crazy with what I considered investments.

Here are four ridiculous items I wish someone warned me not to buy.

Sound System: Besides the fact I would actually like to be on good terms with my neighbours, a sound system is just not at all necessary for my tiny apartment.

Let’s face it, the sound from my

iPhone speakers reach from the kitchen to my bathroom just fine.

King Size Bed: About two-thirds of the furniture I assembled from IKEA seemed a lot smaller online than in my actual rental. Now my bedroom looks like it could belong to Shrek.

Decorative Pillows: How many pillows can you fit onto one sofa? The answer is a lot! The pillows look great. The only thing

is I’m constantly looking for space to place all these pillows when it comes time to sit on the only couch in my apartment.

If you haven’t guessed yet - it happens a lot.

Lounge Chair: Summertime is so short. You better believe I invested in a state-of-the-art lounge chair to make the most of my balcony.

The only thing is, the lounge chair is now the only thing that fits on my balcony. Any suggestions on where to store a lounge chair now that it’s winter?

Now, I wonder how much I can sell these items for on Kijiji...

Moving etiquette follow the golden rule

EVEN AT THE BEST OF TIMES,

moving day can be stressful for everyone involved. Whether you are moving into or out of an apartment, lowrise home or a commercial property, a move involves trucks, boxes, packing materials, workers and a certain amount of organized chaos.

As with any major event, preparation is key. There are certain things to do on moving day to make things go as smoothly as possible. The first is to be sure to bring your manners with you.

Think of the following tips as “moving etiquette.”

• Let your neighbours at both ends know when to expect the movers to pull into your place.

Ensure that the movers park and unload to avoid blocking anyone else’s driveway or trespassing on other property while items are being carried into or out of your new place. It is important to respect your neighbours’ privacy and property.

• If you are booking a residential move and have the choice, select 9 or 10 a.m. for your truck to arrive. This is a time when people who work the 9-to-5 shift are not at home, and you are less likely to cause them any inconvenience.

• Everyone wants to move at the same time, but this can tie up the elevators and make it impossible for residents to come 2 6 nexthome.ca

and go, so instead of chaos, the property management will book a block of time for you to move. Book the elevators well in advance – in both the building you are leaving and the building you will be moving into – so that you can have the benefit of arranging your time comfortably.

You should also check to see if movers are restricted to using specific doors. Sometimes there are service areas to use for moving so that the rest of the tenants aren’t disturbed

or inconvenienced, or to accommodate large, heavy pieces of furniture.

• Make arrangements for your pets to be cared for elsewhere. The very nature of a move means that doors will be open for long periods, and having animals wandering in and out can be dangerous for them and for those carrying your belongings.

• If the movers are playing a radio, ask them to keep the volume down to avoid bothering small children or elderly neighbours

who may want peace and quiet.

• The physical nature of moving means that your movers will get thirsty and hungry. Although it is not necessary, offering cool drinks and some snacks is always greatly appreciated.

Cold water and pop during the summer or coffee and hot chocolate in the winter can go a long way to keeping movers refreshed and energized.

• Most people wonder about whether to tip movers. Tipping is not compulsory in our industry, so it is totally up to you. If you feel your moving crew has done an exemplary job, by all means, show your appreciation that way. Whether or not you tip, you should expect excellent service.

• Most moving companies are good about removing packing materials, crates, boxes, etc. when they leave. If anything is left behind, collect it yourself and dispose of it.

• As items are moved out of rooms, take advantage of the opportunity to sweep, mop and clean what you can. Think about how you would like to find the place you are moving into and act accordingly. Some people hire cleaners to come in and work their magic before turning in the key to the landlord or new owners. You may even want to check your lease; some leases and tenant agreements stipulate the condition of cleanliness and you don’t want to be sent a bill from your old landlord because you didn’t fulfil your obligations at your old apartment when leaving.

• Keep your cool. By moving day, you are likely to be tired and

worried about all your items arriving at your destination without any damage.

So, it’s all about common courtesy – treating others the way you would like to be treated – and it works both ways. 1 | Multi-tasking is always productive. False. Although useful in some situations, multitasking can cause you to lose your focus and make costly and time-consuming mistakes. When working on important tasks, multitasking is probably not a good idea. Some things require your undivided attention.

2 | Being messy automatically means you are disorganized.

False. Organizing is not about how it looks, it’s about how it works. Visual, creative types need to have things out where they can see them because out-of-sight is out-of-mind for them. This may cause their spaces to appear disorganized to others, but they probably know exactly where everything is. On the flip side, visual types lose focus when there is too much to look at, so they need products that allow them to contain their belongings to minimize the visual clutter.
