he moment you move into an apartment from a reliable property management company, you will be able to enjoy a number of benefits. One cheque basically takes care of it all.
As you know, one of the biggest things to consider when renting is your choice of location. Unlike furniture, paint and being a good neighbour, it’s the one thing that you cannot change, so it’s important to choose well. What are the other critical things to consider when choosing a location? There are so many personal variables it’s really up to you to decide. As an example, if it is just as important to you to be close to your children’s school as it is to your place of work, then look for a place that offers you the best of both worlds. If you aren’t keen on owning a car and want to use public transportation whenever possible to save on parking and gas costs, a well-connected mass transit location may be a better option for you. If you’re a walker, close proximity to major amenities should be a definite consideration. Doing errands such as grocery shopping and banking on foot not only offers many health benefits, it gives you a chance to meet new neighbours and discover new places too. Don’t let the cost of rent solely dictate your choice of location. Make a list of your priorities first, and then take the time to assess each location for its merits and weight your options.

This is also where picking a good property management company comes in. Meet dixie. As A universitY student sHe wAs sent A Credit CArd And wHAt witH no inCoMe And lots oF teMptAtion, Dixie ended up falling way behind on her payments. The result: a store clerk took away her card and cut it up right in front of her. How embarrassing! While the pain of being dissed publicly may have dulled over time, the damage done to her credit history lingers. To make matters worse, at university Dixie was a little slow paying her cell phone bill. While her service was never discontinued, she did carry a balance from month to month that she cleared at the end of each school year. Last year, when Dixie applied for a car loan, she was turned down because of her crappy repayment history. She’s worried about the future and how her past borrowing mistakes will haunt her. Sound familiar? If you see yourself reflected in Dixie’s story, no doubt by now you know you’re not the only person in this particular leaky boat. Unfortunately, many people have no experience managing credit make mistake after mistake: • they make their payments late • they go over their credit limits • they have a b’zillion credit cards in their wallets
First, you’ve got to get yourself some credit again so that you can demonstrate what a good job you can do managing it. The only way to establish a credit history is to use and repay credit. There are a number of ways to go about rebuilding your credit history. Take out a loan to make an investment (another good reason to start a retirement savings plan), make your monthly payments on time and build a shiny new credit history. Since the institution that’s giving you the loan will also be holding the retirement savings, the credit procedure is far less stringent than it normally would be. Ask a co-signer or guarantor to help you get a small loan of, say, $1,000, which you would then pay off over three months. It would cost you in interest, but you would be back on track credit-wise. Don’t want to incur the interest costs? Apply for a “secured” credit card. With a secured credit card, you put up cash to cover your balance. Lenders often want twice the credit card limit, so if you want a $500 credit limit, you’ll have to ante up $1,000. Once you’ve established your ability to manage the card – anywhere from six months to a year – you can ask for the security requirement to be dropped and your deposit returned. Thinking of hiring a credit-repair company? Don’t bother. Credit repair companies can’t do anything you can’t. A credit bureau will not remove accurate negative information from your credit report before the legal time period has expired so don’t get suckered by anyone who claims they can mop up your credit disasters faster. There are no “loopholes.” The only way to fix a poor credit rating is to be smart about how you use credit. Learn from your mistakes and move on.

bedroom, so it should be a relaxing place to unwind and get that important beauty sleep your body needs. Recently, I gave my bedroom a major makeover. Here are my top tips to create a beautiful and comfortable bedroom retreat on any budget. COOL COLOUR PALETTE. I’ve had red bedrooms
and I’ve had pale blue rooms. I can honestly say colour psychology is real. A cool, serene, colour palette makes all the difference in creating a relaxing room. Go for soft and subtle colours if you want a respite from the busy world outside. For my bedroom makeover, I chose Whistle Stop 50BB from CIL’s paint collection to create a calming effect.

This is another great place to add some art to the room. I used a signature Jo Alcorn light from artcraftlighting.com, which added a touch of whimsy to the room. THE PERFECT BED. I had an awkward small
window in my bedroom that I had to hide. I chose a padded headboard that was just high enough to cover the window.
COMFY CARPET OR RUG. Having the perfect texture underfoot
I wouldn’t call myself a DIY’er, but when the time comes, I can step up. I found a headboard with clean lines at HomeSense (homesense.ca) for $300. However, it wasn’t quite the right colour for my project. When I found a cotton, patterned shower curtain for $30, I thought I’d tackle a DIY project and create the perfect headboard. Voilà! 5 ORGANIZING MYTHS that can keep you stuck by HELLEN BUTTIGIEG
IT’S TIME TO DISPEL SOME ORGANIZING MYTHS THAT MAY BE KEEPING YOU STUCK AND GETTING IN YOUR WAY OF A MORE ORGANIZED LIFE. I’ve focused on the five most common beliefs about organizing, so you can get clear on what works and what doesn’t. Once we bust the myths, you’ll be on your way to organizing yourself like a pro. Answer true or false to these myths:
sight is out-of-mind for them. This may cause their spaces to appear disorganized to others, but they probably know exactly where everything is. The flip side of this though is that visual types lose focus when there is too much to look at, so they need to find products that will allow them to contain their stuff to keep down the visual clutter. For example, a literature sorter allows them to contain their papers while still keeping them within view.
1. CONTAINERS WILL ALWAYS GET YOU ORGANIZED. False.
I often hear people say to me “There’s no way I could get organized because I am too sentimental – I don’t want to get rid of everything.”Although you shouldn’t keep things you don’t like or will never use, there’s always a way to either display or store the things that matter. For example, shadow boxes or display cases allow you to protect as well as showcase the possessions that truly mean something special to you.
Contrary to what the ads want you to believe, containers alone are not the answer to your organizing dilemmas. In fact, they can become part of the problem. Let’s take Nancy for example. She purchased several large plastic containers to organize all of her craft supplies and memorabilia. But she still couldn’t find what she was looking for when she needed it. Nancy mistakenly thought all she needed to get herself organized was a few containers. But what she really needed was to learn a bit about organizing. Before you go out and spend money on containers or other organizing products, do some preliminary work and planning. The first thing I recommend is doing the purge. Only when you know exactly what it is you need to store, how much of it, and where the most suitable location is to store it – should you go out and purchase containers. And don’t forget to measure first. Bringing home the wrong containers for the job simply creates more clutter.
2. MULTITASKING IS ALWAYS PRODUCTIVE. False. Although useful in some situations, multitasking can cause you to lose your focus and make costly and time consuming mistakes. When working on important tasks, multitasking is probably not a good idea. Some things require your undivided attention. Multitasking distracts us from being in the present moment, which can drain our energy and leave us feeling exhausted and unfulfilled. Next time you are participating in an activity, be with that activity (rather than thinking about all the things you should be doing instead, or have to do later). Resist the RentersGuide.ca habit of trying to do two things at once.
3. BEING MESSY AUTOMATICALLY MEANS YOU ARE DISORGANIZED. False. Organizing is not about how it looks; it’s about how it works. Visual, creative types need to have things out where they can see them, because out-ofRentersGuide.ca
4. YOU HAVE TO TOSS EVERYTHING TO GET ORGANIZED. False.
5. IF YOU WRITE IT ON A TO-DO LIST, IT WILL GET DONE. False. I had a client who was so proud of her to-do list: it was prioritized, colour-coded and categorized – yet she was frustrated and overwhelmed at how many things on the list were not getting done. To get anything accomplished you have to actually schedule time to do the things on your list. Simply putting a task on a list is not a commitment – blocking time on your calendar to do it is.
