ou’ve decided it’s time to rent a new place. Now you have another decision to make – choosing your property management company. How can you check the reputation of the company or landlord you’re considering renting from? First, find out how long the company has been in business by asking the staff or visiting the company’s website to see what information they offer online. Most property management companies have well-established business practices in place to ensure that the customer comes first. If possible, drive around existing communities managed by the company you’re considering and speak to some of the renters in the building. Many property management companies will be able to put you in touch with people who would be happy to provide a testimonial. Get a feel for each company and the staff. You should be comfortable and courteous asking questions and in turn you should expect to be treated with consideration and respect. Think twice about any property management company that doesn’t willingly provide any information you respectfully request. Putting the customer first and offering the best quality rental space for your money is a property management company’s ultimate goal. ecently, Brookfield Office Properties and Oxford Properties made big news – in New York City. These two Canadian developers – also prominent in Canada’s rental industry – are developing landmark communities in New York City. Oxford is building Hudson Yards. The project includes 14 towers, covering over 26 hectares. Blocks away, Brookfield is developing five acres, creating three 60-storey towers. In addition to new retail, commercial and public space, these communities bring close to 6,000 new rental units to a city where renting is the most common lifestyle choice. According to the New York City Department of City Planning, NYC has the densest population of any city in America, “over 27,000 people per square mile.” Of those residents, about two thirds are renters, “over twice the national average.” So why are Canadian industry mavens like Brookfield and Oxford going into NYC to develop the under utilized properties? Have they learned how to do it better when developing our Canadian urban centres? Do our developers have different vision? For Canadian names to take centre stage in NYC development seems to make a strong, proud statement about Canada’s rental industry. As ingenuity kicks in and developers find new pieces of property to develop in NYC, I hopes we’ll see more here! With near all-time-low vacancy rates across Canada, new rental buildings would be a dream come true for many. PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE with Praline Sauce
DIRECTIONS Set a rack over a baking sheet and line the rack with two layers of paper towels. Spread the pumpkin purée over the paper towels and let drain for two hours, until the purée is fairly dry. Preheat the oven to 450°F. Butter the bottom and side of a nine-inch springform pan. In a food processor, pulse the graham crackers until finely ground. Add the pecans and brown sugar and pulse again until finely ground. Add the melted butter and pulse just until incorporated. Press the crumbs onto the bottom of the prepared pan. Bake the crust for about six minutes, just until it is fragrant and lightly browned. Let the crust cool completely. In the bowl of a standing electric mixer fitted with the paddle, beat the cream cheese until it is very smooth. In a small bowl, whisk the sugar with the salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice. With the machine on, add the spiced sugar to the cream cheese and beat until creamy, scraping the bottom and side of the bowl repeatedly. Carefully add the drained pumpkin puree and beat until smooth. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well and scraping down the bowl between each addition. Beat in the heavy cream, lemon juice, and vanilla until the cheesecake mixture is smooth.

uscious and creamy, this decadent recipe for Pumpkin Cheesecake with Praline Sauce is a delicious combination of cream, sugar, eggs, pumpkin purée with an intoxicating blend of traditional pumpkin pie spices: ground cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and allspice. Once it’s baked, the cheesecake is then topped with a sweet buttery pecan praline topping. The key to this dessert’s success is threefold: draining the pumpkin purée on paper towel at the beginning, so it’s as thick as possible; ensuring that the cream cheese, eggs and cream are at room temperature before starting; and finally, beating the cheesecake mixture thoroughly so that the final result is lighter than air. Rest assured, the extra effort pays off. This Pumpkin Cheesecake is very light, not heavy at all, and wonderfully delicious. I’ll wager that you’ll never make a Pumpkin Pie again. As a final flourish, a dollop of whipped cream or scoop of homemade Cinnamon Ice Cream, would be pretty hard to resist!
Pour the cheesecake mixture over the cooled crust and bake for 12 minutes. Lower the oven temperature to 225°F and bake the cheesecake for about three hours, until an instant-read thermometer inserted in the center registers 150°F; the centre will be very jiggly but not liquidy. Let the cheesecake cool on a rack, then cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. Run a hot knife around the cheesecake and loosen the springform ring. Carefully remove the ring and transfer the cake to a plate. Using a warm knife, cut the cake into wedges and serve with the Pecan Praline Topping and a scoop of Cinnamon Ice Cream.
