EAST KILDONAN IS a popular

suburb running west from the Red River to Panet Rd. on the east and again north from Oakland Ave. almost to Harbison Ave. in the south. Largely residential and stretching down Henderson Highway, E.K. residents constantly course downtown over the Disraeli Freeway.

Those who call East Kildonan home know the community by heart – this is a community with deep roots and a lot of long-time residents. They’ve gone to school there or started a family there.

Some like the access to other parts

of the city while others are hardcore locals who wouldn’t venture past the bridge.

Life in this big neighbourhood is busy for families – and for traffic.

Teens hang out after school near the malls while young parents play at the pool or stroll down the sidewalks. The many parks and pathways also attract young singles in the summer who bike or rollerblade with a friend or a pet.

Locals vary from Harley Davidson fans to Winnipeg Jets fans. Working class and middle income families find housing fairly affordable here, especially east

of Henderson Highway. Further west, along the river, bigger, more affluent homes have more seclusion and winding, seemingly exclusive roads. However, lush, green groves and bustling community centres are on both sides of the road with many trails teeming with activity.

East Kildonan is home to two school divisions, and there are many small parks and many acres for leisure activity in outreaching Kil-Cona Regional Park.

Gail’s guide to building a budget

OVER AND OVER AGAIN PEOPLE tell

me they don’t know how to make a budget. It doesn’t matter how many articles they read, how many worksheets they download off the web, how many times they try, they just can’t do it.

Once I started doing the show ‘Til Debt Do Us Part and introduced the magic jars, people headed out to buy their own. But they still couldn’t figure out how much money to put in them.

So I’ve created a step-by-step plan for all those who wish to follow it.

Using this plan and Gail’s Interactive Budget Worksheet, you can build a budget that will not only tell you how you’re doing, but also how much to stick in the jars if you’ve decided to live on cash.

Okay, here we go. #01 On the budget worksheet, fill in all the amounts under income. You’ll need your “gross” income and your “net” income.

If you make $60,000 a year gross, you would enter 60,000/12 (which is $60,000 divided by 12.) Ditto your monthly net income.

Careful now, if you’re paid on any other schedule you have to use your lowest monthly income as your base, and use any extra money you receive to boost your planned spending (for things such as furniture acquisitions, vacations, and the like). #02 Enter any other sources of income you may have. You must use “monthly” amounts. So if you 2 0 nexthome.ca

average $6,000 in annual child support received, you would enter $500 for your monthly amount. If you receive income that is irregular – think annual bonus – do not enter it under income.

Why? Well, if you bank on getting it and you don’t you’ll be SOL. Better to use that money for things like gifts, vacations, and other extras, things you don’t have to pay for if the bonus doesn’t materialize. #03 Now it’s time for the fixed expenses. Get out your last bank statement(s). Based on what you spent last month, fill in the fixed expenses. Don’t worry if the numbers seem high at first, just put in what you spent last month, based on what went out of your bank account. #04 We’re going to skip down to Saving now. Yep, you have to save.

Don’t bother arguing, you have to save. I want you to divide your monthly income by 100 and multiply your answer by five. There, that’s

Even up in fixed expenses you can find places to cut like cell phone or cable. {2} You can make more money. Work harder, work smarter. Get a second job, a third job, a better job.

That’s your budget.

five per cent, and it’s the minimum you should be saving. Ultimately, you need to save 10 per cent, but let’s start with five per cent and work from there. Under “emergency” enter $100. #05 Next we’ll do debt repayment. Add up your monthly debt repayment amounts. Include what you’re spending to repay everything except your mortgage and your car loan/lease. Put it under “debt repayment.” #06 You’re doing great. Now look at the bottom line on the budget – the line that says, “income – expenses.” What do you have left?

Whatever it is that’s what you have to work with to budget for your variable expenses. Yep. That’s it. Go ahead and divvy up the money in the various categories under Variable Expenses. If you find you’re left with $20 a month for groceries and you know that just won’t do, then you have two choices:

The financial rule of thumb says you shouldn’t spend more than 35 per cent of your net income on housing. (That includes mortgage/rent, condo fees/maintenance, property tax and utilities.) If you’re spending more than 35 per cent, either you can look for ways to cut back on your housing costs, you can make more money, or you can trim in other areas (like transportation) so you end up balancing at the bottom line.

It’s your money. You can do anything you want with it except spend more than you make.

Okay, now that you have a budget, you have no excuses. Get out of debt. Live within your means.

5 organizing myths that can keep you stuck in a mess

organizing myths that may be keeping you stuck and getting in your way of a more organized life. I’ve focused on the five most common beliefs about organizing, so you can get clear on what works and what doesn’t. Once we bust the myths, you’ll be on your way to organizing yourself like a pro.

Answer true or false to these myths: 1. Containers will always get you organized. False. Contrary to what the ads want you to believe, containers alone are not the answer to your organizing dilemmas. In fact, they can become part of the problem.

Let’s take Nancy for example. She purchased several large plastic containers to organize all of her craft supplies and memorabilia. But she still couldn’t find what she was looking for when she needed it.

Nancy mistakenly thought all she needed to get herself organized was a few containers. But what she really needed was to learn a bit about organizing.

Before you go out and spend money on containers or other organizing products, do some preliminary work and planning. The first thing I recommend is doing the purge. Only when you know exactly what it is you need to store, how much of it, and where the most suitable location is to store it, should you go out and purchase containers. the wrong containers for the job simply creates more clutter.

2. Multi-tasking is always productive. False. Although useful in some situations, multitasking can cause you to lose your focus and make costly and time-consuming mistakes. When working on important tasks, multitasking is probably not a good idea. Some things require your undivided attention.

Multi-tasking distracts us from being in the present moment, which can drain our energy and leave us feeling exhausted and unfulfilled. Next time you are participating in an activity, be with that activity rather than thinking about all the things you should be doing instead, or have to do later.

Resist the habit of trying to do two things at once.

3. Being messy automatically means you are disorganized.

False. Organizing is not about how it looks, it’s about how it works. Visual, creative types need to have things out where they can see them, because out-ofsight is out-of-mind for them.

This may cause their spaces to appear disorganized to others, but they probably know exactly where everything is. The flip side of this though is that visual types lose focus when there is too much to look at, so they need to find products that will allow them to contain their stuff to keep down the visual clutter. For example, a literature sorter allows them to contain their papers while still keeping them within view.

4. You have to toss everything to get organized. False. I often hear people say to me, “There’s no way I could get organized because

I am too sentimental. I don’t want to get rid of everything.” Although you shouldn’t keep things you don’t like or will never use, there’s always a way to either display or store the things that matter. For example, shadow boxes or display cases allow you to protect as well as showcase the possessions that truly mean something to you.

5. If you write it on a to-do list, it will get done. False. I had a client who was so proud of her to-do list.

It was prioritized, colour-coded and categorized, yet she was frustrated and overwhelmed at how many things on the list were not getting done. To get anything accomplished you have to actually schedule time to do the things on your list. Simply putting a task on a list is not a commitment. Blocking time on your calendar to do it is.

I used to look for prices that included utilities because I didn’t want to deal with setting up hydro and paying another bill. Ten years later, I still do the same thing because I don’t want to worry about running my air conditioning in the summer (I know that’s not a great thing to admit, but I’m going to assume that I’m not the only person that does that).

I’ve heard of landlords adding conditions to lease agreements when it comes to all-inclusive rent — for instance, prohibiting space heaters in the winter and/

or excessive air conditioning in the summer.

Perhaps you’ve read before that certain clauses in leases are essentially meaningless and in some ways, that is true, but it is also true that landlords generally have the right to include restrictions.

Landlord and tenant boards often suggest settling disputes before they escalate and I would suggest the same — but it’s important to know your rights when it comes to utilities and rental legislation.

a home but if you choose the right pieces, combinations, colours and frames you can create a statement that is jaw dropping – even in the tiniest of spaces!

Here are my top five tips on how to incorporate art into your small space: 1. You don’t always have to hang artwork. I love the look of layering on top of a hutch or buffet. Add in a few eclectic pieces and you can truly create an artwork statement in your space.

2. Got vertical in a small space.

Although floor space might be at a premium you can always look up. For this tiny space we chose great pieces from an online source called Posterjack, added in some faux stag heads and let me tell you – this space certainly makes people look twice.

3 Dust first, vacuum second Any bits of dust or dirt that fall to the floor as you’re dusting will be picked up by the vacuum cleaner.

4 The best dust cloth: A damp, clean microfibre cloth Hold the cloth by a corner and lightly mist with clean water from a spray bottle The cloth should be just damp enough to pick up dust without leaving moisture streaks on the furniture surface.

5 Pet hair Remove it from upholstery with a damp microfibre cloth or rubber glove.

6 Damp mop First sweep or vacuum floors to collect crumbs and dirt.

Then start washing the floor in the farthest corner of the room and work your way

towards the door. Use a damp cloth on the end of a mop handle to reach the narrow space between appliances.

7 Microwave spatters Fill a cup with water and microwave on high for a few minutes. The steam will loosen any baked on food so you can easily wipe it clean.

Before wiping the microwave, remember to be extra careful when removing the cup of water as it will be hot.
