hether you’re relocating from one coast to the other or moving to your first place out of parents home, changing homes can be hectic, exciting and certainly stressful. But, relax.
You can eliminate all the anxiety sometimes associated with moving by taking control of the situation with confidence. If you decide to move yourself, book a moving truck well in advance from a reliable company that can help you give you tips on moving as well as advice regarding the size of vehicle you will need. If you decide to go with a pro, ask your friends and family for a recommendation of mover. Call at least three companies to ask about their services and then decide. Professional movers can do everything for you if you wish, from packing and unpacking, to disconnecting appliances and electronics, but of course there’s extra cost involved. Make sure you understand the terms of your agreement no matter what you decide as well any other additional costs, such as insurance and mileage costs so you can budget accordingly.

Moving can be fun &

MOVING CAN BE STRESSFUL FOR CHILDREN. THE CHANGE CAN BE OVERWHELMING, but there are ways to make it easier on them. It’s important to inform your kids about the family’s plans to move as soon as you can. The more time they have to prepare, the easier it will be for them, say child psychologists who suggest that children should participate in the decision-making. If kids feel included and take ownership of their new-home decision, the transition will go much easier. Moving is a family process so share the excitement and responsibilities with every member of the family. Give everyone an age-appropriate responsibility. Kids will enjoy decorating their moving boxes. And when you are in your new home, it will be easier for them to find their stuff. Throughout the move, stay as upbeat and calm as possible. Give your children a chance to express their feelings and try to be honest about your own feelings. Most children will feel some anger, sadness or may worry about the move. Reassure them they aren’t alone and it’s OK to have these feelings. Involve your kids in the packing process and start packing items you will not need ahead of time. Sentimental items your children treasure such as special blankets, beloved stuffed animals and photo albums should be kept in a separate bag or box which they can keep close until moving day, and then bring with them to your new home. If it’s not a long distance, why not ride your bikes and scope out your children’s favourite activities and even fast food locations, new neighbourhood tennis courts, soccer clubs, baseball associations.

Check with the local school PTA to determine if there is a Welcome Wagon program, arrange a tour of their new school and meet the teachers ahead of moving day. Make sure children say goodbye to the important people in their lives. Help them prepare a list of phone numbers, emails and addresses of important people in their lives. Prepare cards that have their name and new address on them to hand out to friends. If you are moving within the same city, try to schedule a few play dates with their friends before your move day. Give your kids an inexpensive digital camera to take as many pictures as possible of their friends prior to moving day. This way, they’ll have a reason to stay in touch as they share the photos. Keep them involved with the sports teams they were associated with until the end of the season, so they can maintain their friendships while they make new friends in their new neighbourhood. Child psychology experts agree that if kids know they can stay in touch with friends and loved ones, it will make the move less traumatic. Childproofing CHALLENGES HAVING A BABY IS EXCITING, AND NERVE-WRACKING. You want to make sure that your little angel is protected at all times. Here are some strategies to help you keep your home safe and sound. • Make sure your electrical outlets are covered. There are many kinds of outlet covers – choose the one that is right for you. • Confirm that you have reliable smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure that the batteries are working. • Use doorknob covers on doors to non-childproofed areas (like the bathrooms and laundry room). Round doorknob covers are easy to find, there are specialized designs to cover the lever style. Baby gates are also an effective solution for keeping kids in or out of a room. Those little coil door stops with the white plastic stopper are a serious choking hazard. Replace them with a safer one-piece version or a rubber bumper at knob level instead. Those plastic stoppers seem innocuous but often seen in the pediatric emergency rooms. • Don’t use toys or pillows in the crib, especially with young babies. Crib bumper pads are also questionable. Never use an electric blanket for a child (could cause a fire). • Never leave a child unattended in the bathtub. Drowning can occur in seconds, and mere inches of water pose a risk.

• Check toys for broken parts/bits that are chocking hazard or sharp. Keep small toys for older children (like figurines, game board pieces, and small building blocks) away from your baby. Occasionally check recall lists for toys and baby gear as even the most reputable company often finds a flaw that could pose a safety risk to your child. Many toy and baby-gear stores as well as big box hardware stores sell a variety of childproofing products. There are also companies that will come to your home find solutions to your specific needs.
