very province in Canada has its own Landlord and Tenant website designed to outline the province’s Residential Tenancies Act.

These websites are great resources should you need them. Not only do they outline the specific rights and responsibilities of both the tenant and the the landlord, most offer an easy-to-use FAQ designed answer commonly asked questions. The web is a great resource for info, the key is to ensure that you’re reviewing quality information from a reliable resource, which is why I am mentioning that these specific websites exist. If you search the term Residential Tenancies Act in the province you’re interested in, you should be able to find the government website easily. Don’t rely on websites that feature commentary from third party resources, be sure to use the specific government website to guide you in your search for answers. In terms of searching for a new property to rent, you can rely on Renters Guide and RentersGuide.ca to help you out. We have plenty in the way of articles on renting, decor and more. Have a question? what do you do when you’ve got the perfect apartment – except for one thing – a bad neighbour?

Most renters have been there at least once in their rental experience. Whether it’s noise issues, clacking around above you in hard shoes, inconsiderately parking in your assigned spot, leaving garbage on the disposal room floor or just being a boisterous busy-body, their own self-absorbed and selfish behaviour is diminishing your comfort and sense of home. So what do you do about it? Every building has rules. Beyond that, the Residential Tenancies Act defines what is permissible and what isn’t. Depending on your relationship with the offending neighbour and the nature of the problem, you have several ways to handle things. You may feel comfortable about discussing the problem directly with your neighbour, or leaving a polite note. The offender may not realize they are creating an issue. If you’re not comfortable addressing a legitimate issue yourself, your property management company can help. If the issue persists and contravenes the Residential Tenancies, they may be obliged to stop or face the threat of being evicted. Hopefully things don’t ever need to progress to eviction proceedings. Most people are reasonable and respectful. Remembering to treat others as you want to be treated goes a long way to creating a harmonious rental building. There’s no reason you should have to lose enjoyment of your own apartment – or worse, leave – because of a neighbour. A little bit of etiquette goes a long way. When mixing patterns, make sure the scales differ, for example, match a large-scale floral with a small-scale stripe. You can bring in these elements in varying ways. Throw cushions, area rugs, bedding and upholstery are just a few options. Be creative and let your style shine through. You may feel frustrated at first when it comes to decorating your rental unit. No paint, no holes and no major changes doesn’t mean no style. Weather you are staying for the short-term or the long run; you can still make your rental an inviting, warm and cozy place to call home.

With a resume of hit shows, including Sarah 101, Sarah’s House, and Real Potential, this design darling has shown us that even the most unsalvageable looking spaces can be transformed into something beautiful. Sarah took some time away from her busy schedule to solve some interior design dilemmas and provide us with her oh-so-coveted advice. What is your favourite 2014 trend and what are a few ways to incorporate it into a home’s interior? A Irregular faceted shapes are very popular right now. I’m seeing them in a variety of accessories, from table lamps to candles and vases, bowls and even just decorative objects. Gold continues to be a big inspiration in both fashion and home so the combination of these faceted shapes and gilded finishes allows you to add a hit of lustre and a metallic finish to any room with ease. Add it to your mantel in a grouping, down the centre of your dining table (as votives), or as a grouping on the coffee table.

Many homes now feature hardwood and tiled flooring in living spaces. What are the do’s and don’ts for choosing the perfect area rug? A As a general rule when placing furniture, make sure the front legs of your furniture are sitting on the carpet by at least 6-in If your carpet sits in the middle of the room and all furniture sits around it, the carpet will look like an island (or a postage stamp). I find 6-in by 9-in carpets are almost always too small for any room, unless you are using it in a foyer. What are some inventive ways to create space partitions? A Instead of creating partitions, I’d recommend delineating zones within the room. The reason for buying an open concept space is to be able to benefit from long sight lines and large areas. If you have a large room, don’t feel that you can only do a single seating area. Whether you have a spraWling home With plenty

of room or a cosy place that has little in the way of extra space, you need to create a system so that your home functions in a manner that accommodates your lifestyle needs. And whether you live large or small, chances are there’s a favourite spot in your home that sees more than its fair share of action. It’s a corner of the sofa you curl up in, or a spot at the breakfast counter that has a pile of things you want to get to ‘when you have a minute’ that could use a little bit of help. Without designated spaces you’re forever tucking things away that don’t have a real home – and wasting far too much time trying to remember where and when you go to retrieve them. Develop a place for each activity you do and space to keep those items that go with it to add some organization to your home – and your life! Everyone needs a home office. Are you using your kitchen or dining room table as an office? It can be frustrating and time consuming to constantly have to pack up your papers and bring them out again. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a student or a homemaker, you need a space in your home specifically designated for processing paperwork. Although it would be ideal to have a room devoted entirely to this purpose, you can also use an armoire in the family room that closes up when not in use, or a closet that has been refitted with a countertop and drawers. You’ll also need good lighting, a comfortable chair, and a functional filing system. Where did I put the... Have you ever stored a special item in a safe place and then forgotten where you put it when you need it three months later? A simple solution is to create a document in MS Word or a similar program on your computer to record the location of seldom-used articles. Use the ‘find’ feature in Word (located in the Edit drop-down menu) to retrieve the information quickly within the document. Be sure to name the document something obvious so you can find it on your computer. Name that room. Rooms that don’t have a specific purpose often become dumping grounds for clutter. Before you begin de-cluttering, go through your home, room by RentersGuide.ca room, and determine how you want to use each space. Identify which items support the purpose of the room and which ones should be moved elsewhere. Keep a few boxes handy so you can easily transport smaller items to their appropriate rooms.

a shoe-in for office supply storage. Use the pockets of a clear vinyl shoe bag to hold just about everything you need for the office, from spare scissors to extra batteries. These usually come with hooks you can use to hang them over the door, allowing you to tap into previously unused space. everything needs a home. Whenever you bring a new item into your home, immediately find a permanent place for it to live. To help you determine the best spot for it, ask yourself what else is like it, and where (and how often) you will use it. Store similar things together and store items near their place of use. Items used daily should be placed in the most accessible areas (within arm’s reach), whereas seldom-used items can be stored in out-of-the way spaces. Keep a label maker handy to label drawers, shelves and containers so you don’t have to rely on your memory when you need to find something quickly. What did i do with that manual? Did you add new appliances and electronics to your collection recently? Staple the receipt and warranty to the instruction manual and tape it to the bottom of the item so it’s easy to find if you need to refer to it. For portable items like cell phones and MP3 players, store the manuals in an accordion file by category. Where did I leave my keys? The most common excuse for lateness? “I couldn’t find my keys”. It’s hard to be successful if you can’t even leave your home. Save yourself the frustration and embarrassment by simply making an extra set of keys and keeping them in a special place. Give another set to a relative or neighbour in case of emergency. Create a home for your keys and always place them there when you arrive. You can use a bowl, a small basket or a hook. If all else fails, attach a beeper to your keys that you can activate when they go missing.

for the unexpected when moving by ChuCk ResniCk

Moving your worldly possessions involves a lot of organization, and if there’s one thing professional Movers understand, it’s to expect the unexpected. In fact, that’s a major reason why many people choose to hand over the task of moving to companies that do this every day. Some do-it-yourself moves go well; others end up unnecessarily stressful because those completing the work don’t anticipate potential glitches. Checklists are great, but every single move is different – and nothing beats experience for transferring household goods quickly, safely and efficiently. For example, if you move in the winter and it’s a snowy, slushy day, how do you protect the floors from water/salt damage at both ends? What about getting large items around hard-to-maneuver corners without marking walls? What if someone gets hurt? Do you know how to pack delicate items like lamp shades and glassware to eliminate shifting and potential breakage during a long haul? What if the truck breaks down or gets into an accident halfway to your new home? Professional movers have resources to draw upon to anticipate and handle any number of unexpected happenings. Training is a great preventative measure – when you shop for a mover, find out if and how the drivers and moving people are trained. Ask whether they have a “Plan B” in case of vehicle problems, and what you can do to be as prepared as possible when the packing/moving begins. As tempting as a DIY move may be, think through the consequences. Are you prepared to deal with the possibility of friends or family members not showing up on moving day due to illness or hurting themselves trying to move heavy items? Do you have a back-up plan for extra items in case you misjudge the size of moving vehicle you need? What about plants? Hazardous liquids? The money you think you’ll save by not hiring a professional mover may end up being spent on repairs if these large and valuable pieces are not handled correctly. Worse yet, irreplaceable items may be lost forever.

Do you have a plan that includes being able to find those things easily and quickly?
