With Wellington Crescent on one side and the Donald Street Bridge on the other, the urban residents are highly mobile, street savvy and aware of their surroundings.

The Village hosts fantastic funky shops, trendy nightclubs and unique restaurants known only on Osborne Street. If you’re looking for karaoke or Oprah’s chai tea, you’re looking for Osborne. Osborne Village has an annual Canada Day Street Festival that features First Nations drumming, bands, an open market and street hockey.

Young, well-dressed business professionals enjoy their Starbucks next to street musicians and history students. Osborne boasts an energizing mix, with a marked difference between day and night.

During the day, dads with strollers and cyclists swarm the streets.

After business hours, groups of friends get together for food and wine or try performance art alone.

Many new families call the Village home as well as some older residents enjoying their view from the highrise apartments, but most residents are typically young, single and working in the area.

In this neighbourhood, public Transit is the most frequent form of transportation down Osborne

Street, after vehicle traffic. There are at least eight bus routes and the Rapid Transit station is located nearby. Parking is tight so people often walk, bike or bus in order to save a little bit of cash.

Osborne Village has more than 500 buildings – one-third is residential use. There are elementary and one middle schools. The Village is close to the Misericordia hospital and famous Firehall Station No. 4 sits on Stradbrook. The River Osborne Community Centre is further south at Confusion Corner.

June 30 is the busiest moving day of the year says Two Men and a Truck – Canada

Canadians move every year, and of that, 14 per cent opt to move in June.

“Of that 14 per cent, a whopping one-third will choose June 30th as their moving day,” said Chuck Resnick, vice-president of Marketing and Operations, Two Men and A Truck - Canada.

“That boils down to roughly 199,000 individuals and families who will be on the hunt for boxes, packing materials, and most likely, help with their move,” he added.

“There are many reasons why June 30th is so popular,” says Resnick.

“It’s the end of the school year so it works well for parents who prefer not to disrupt their children’s schooling and to assure they get settled prior to beginning in their new school year come September. Many families also want to get settled into their new homes before the summer gets underway, to get the most out of their backyards and balconies.

The Canada Day holiday also gives people an extra day to unpack and wind down, while the weather is consistently pleasant,” he said.

To make sure moving day goes smoothly, Resnick recommends planning in advance.

“Make arrangements for small children and pets to be looked after so they’re not underfoot.

Pack a ‘day of the move’ box with essentials so you’re not scrambling for toothbrushes a towel, a coffee mug or a kettle,” he added.

According to Resnick, the following tips will also help ensure a stress-free move: • “Boxes of books get heavy fast.

Use small boxes when it comes to these items. Apply this rule to everything you pack: the heavier the item, the smaller the box.

• Emptying closets can be a nightmare. Use wardrobe boxes to simplify the process. Clothes in drawers can be packed into suitcases.

• As tempting as it may be, don’t use cardboard boxes from the grocery store. You never know what little critter may be hiding in the corner of food boxes. In fact avoid used boxes in general; you don’t know how much weight they can handle or how much weight they’ve already handled.

Moving day should be a celebration of your new home; make it as stress-free as possible.”

iSentry Often as renters, we’re not looking to buy elaborate home security systems, but it would still be nice to have a little extra peace of mind sometimes. iSentry sets up your computer’s webcam as a home security system. If the app detects motion in your unit, it will send a notification to your phone and allow you to watch a live video from your webcam.

The app sends users daily neighbourhood deals for restaurants, gyms, events and more.
