f you’re a regular reader of Renters Guide, you know we offer a variety of information for those looking for a new place to call home. But did you know it is your responsibility as a tenant to know your rights and responsibilities prior to signing a lease agreement? By knowing the terms of the rental contract ahead of time, you will be well informed and able to determine if the location is the right one for you. Once you choose your location, a landlord should give you adequate written notice when rent or landlord services have been adjusted, and you should be able to discuss any clarifications or adjustments before a new lease is signed. Many landlords and property management companies do their jobs well and care about the property they own as well as the people who live there. It is in their best interest to keep good tenants. Many go above and beyond. Do you know a terrific landlord or property management team? What makes him or her so great? Let us know. We’d love to hear from you!

f you’re apartment hunting at this time of year, buildings with outdoor amenities like a pool, tennis courts and gorgeous grounds will seem extraenticing. And air-conditioning will probably also top the list. Some communities just seem designed for warm weather and summer living – practically like living at a resort! While it sounds like fun, take a minute to look at your wishlist before you get too attached to that dream of days by the pool. There’s no reason you can’t have it, but make sure that some of the other important items on your list don’t get missed. It might seem reasonable to go a bit further away from your ideal location, but once the summer fun is over and the days grow shorter, will the longer walk to the bus stop become annoying, and more of an issue in rain and snow? If you trade-off for no underground parking, will you be upset while cleaning off the car all winter? If you’re going over budget to attain those extra amenities, make sure it’s worth it in the long run. It can seem perfectly reasonable to make decisions for the ‘now’ but if they come at the cost of what you’ll need later you may regret it. There’s really no reason you can’t have it all, but it may take some searching. Our

But if a friend asks you to help them move, it does not mean you will be facilitating the entire move. Don’t expect to be hauling furniture down 10 flights of stairs or anchoring a fridge down your friend’s fifth-floor bedroom window with nothing but a rope and your own body weight. In fact, I really do not suggest relying on friends for a complete move, but rather for a pair of helping hands. There are many ways you can help with a move, including before the move, during the move and even after the move. Getting your personal belongings organized and neatly packed into boxes is actually half the work, and that job doesn’t involve breaking your back.

THE YEAR’S MOST POPULAR MOVING DATES are coming up, and that means you can expect to see some familiar Facebook status updates: “Can anyone come and help me move on Sunday? Pizza is on me!” As well as some not so subtle text messages: “Hey John, what you doing Sunday? Want to come over for Pizza…and help me move?” Before you send out your lame excuse for why you can’t show up, I want to suggest that this summer you actually consider helping a friend move. Why?

Then, after all that work, there’s the unpacking and once again getting organized. So, before you say no to helping with a move, just consider asking your friend what exactly they need help with. Your strength at some point may be needed, but just being there to help pack, clean and organize can also be a big help. Also, rest assured there will definitely be pizza involved. Now with all of that said, helping your friends move still isn’t the most enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon. That’s why I say keep your friends close and the friends you help move even closer – they totally owe you – including with your own next big move! JUNE 30TH IS STILL THE BUSIEST MOVING DAY OF THE YEAR The countdown is on BY CHUCK RESNICK Above all, even considering its unpredictability, weather makes June 30th an attractive moving date. Let’s face it: cold and snow add challenges to any move. By the end of June, the full heat of summer hasn’t kicked in yet, and the chance of rain is slim. Practically speaking in the financial sense, this date represents the mid-year renewal deadline for property taxes and rental leases, which also plays a role in people’s timing. If you want to move on June 30th, you may have to make several calls to make a booking, but every minute you wait lessens your chances. If you intend to pack yourself, start that now, too. Consider having your mover pack for you. Keep in mind that with time running short, professional movers can get your items ready to move quickly and efficiently. Getting your possessions to your new home in excellent condition is important to us as well as you. If you still decide to pack yourself, you may want to purchase packing supplies from your mover. Our boxes are available in consistent sizes, which makes stacking them in the truck easier. And remember that it’s counterproductive to move items you will just throw out at the other end. Take some time to sort and pitch.
