STAYING WARM INSIDE WHEN IT’S COLD OUTSIDE This year, it seemed as if winter just didn’t want to let go. Sure, temperatures are finally in the double digits, but with record cold temps in early April – a low of minus 17 degrees Celsius on April 3 – it was pretty cold outside. But what about inside?

If your heat is included in your rent, what does it mean when it begins to snow or temperatures turn frigid in mid-April?

Landlords must follow guidelines set out by a province’s Tenancy Act. In Manitoba, it is the landlord’s responsibility to keep rental properties heated if it is included in the rent. In Winnipeg, the guidelines for how much to heat are outlined in the Neighbourhood Liveability Bylaw. If heat is included in your rent, the minimum temperature your landlord must maintain in every room in your unit during the day between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m is 21 degrees Celsius. At night, your landlord must heat your apartment to at least 18 degrees Celsius between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Most landlords want to keep their tenants happy and warm. It’s within their interest to do so. But if you find yourself with a problem, know your rights. You can file a complaint with the city and your landlord can be fined if they don’t turn up the heat.

CONDO RENTALS VS APARTMENT RENTALS SHERYL ERENBERG Along with condo construction has come a lot of investors buying up suites and then renting them out. When deciding where to live, there are a few things to consider, beyond location and price.

HELLEN BUTTIGIEG At first, you were afraid to put away winter gear because it was impossible to believe that unrelenting, snow-filled season was really over. But spring has slowly slid into place, and now you’re finding spring jackets and raincoats being layered on hangers atop winter jackets. The hall closet is bursting at the seams trying to contain the collection of everything from mitts and snow boots to umbrellas and Wellies. It’s time for the seasonal switch. Make some space for your spring and summer, and don’t give Jack Frost another thought.

QUICK TIPS ON ORGANIZING YOUR HOME

Make room for spring. It’s that wonderful time of year again when we can put away the winter gear and lighten the load. Although there’s never enough storage, there are creative ways to better utilize existing spaces when storing out-of-season items.

Here are some ideas to consider: add another shelf above the existing one in all the closets, and purchase under-the-bed organizers. If your bed is not high enough, you can get a bed riser to lift it. Consider creating a document on your computer that serves as an index to outline where you’ve stored what. When winter arrives, you won’t have to rely on your memory to find what you need.

It takes several days to orchestrate a successful sale, so determine whether the money you’ll make is worth the time and energy it will take. Jump-start your spring cleaning with baby steps. If you don’t know where to begin when it comes to spring-cleaning your home, start small. Pick just one room. Moving clockwise, remove anything that doesn’t belong in that room and place it in a “move elsewhere” box to deliver to the room it should live in. Pull out anything that doesn’t give you joy or value and place it in a giveaway box. Toss or recycle any papers and garbage that are left over.

Designate this room as a “noclutter zone” so you will always have a sanctuary to escape to, regardless of what the rest of the house looks like.

Have you stored your winter coats yet? If you’ve been putting off the task of storing your winter coats because you don’t have an

extra closet, there’s a solution. A sturdy, rolling garment rack makes an ideal spot to store winter coats during the summer.

Be sure to dry-clean all items before storing, even if they look clean. Body oils and not-yetvisible food stains attract moths – especially on wool coats. Cover the clothes with a clean, cotton bed sheet or use a zippered canvas wardrobe cover specifically designed for this purpose to keep your clothes dust-free. If you don’t have room for a garment rack, store seasonal items in large garment bags, suitcases or underbed storage bins.

Years ago I had a girlfriend, Suzi, who worked as an office manager.

Boy, she was good at her job.

sit at her kitchen table weeping because she couldn’t decide which credit cards to make minimum payments on, or how she was going to get to the end of the month before she got to the end of the money.

It’s not a unique story. You probably know someone who is responsible for an enormous departmental budget, but bounces cheques at home. Perhaps you have woken in the wee hours wondering when your line of credit would be revoked. Tired of those sleepless nights? Then it’s

time to incorporate some new ideas. Welcome to “We Inc.” I can’t take the credit for the concept of We Inc. It’s my husband’s phrase. While he gets most of his bright ideas from me, this winner is all his.

BOSS, EMPLOYEE AND SHAREHOLDER

What does “We Inc.” mean? It means handling your family’s finances as carefully as you would some stranger’s money. It means making a shift in the way you think about your money. Your focus changes

SET SOME GOALS

Corporations have finance departments, controllers and internal auditors, yet only 25 per cent of us regular folk have a written financial plan. So threequarters of us are walking around without a map.

As the chief financial officer for We Inc., you need a strategy for managing your money. That means setting some goals and establishing the priorities for how money will flow in and out.

First, what’s your personal mission statement? Do you want to retire by the time you’re 55?

Do you want to be debt-free by the year 2020? Make sure your mission has a time-line and outlines the specific steps you’ll take to achieve it.

Second, what are the spending and earning goals that will help you accomplish your mission?

Without a budget, it’s hard to determine if you’re working to meet your priorities, or just keeping your head above water. and you begin to acknowledge that whomever else you work for, your top financial priority should be you and your family.

“We Inc.” means creating a mission statement, following the rules of money management so the auditors – anyone who has an interest in your record keeping such as your banker, the tax man or your spouse – won’t have a hissy-fit, and making sure you stay afloat, so you can continue to pay your primary employee: you. And it means paying attention to the details so the corporation (your family) continues to function and meet the expectations of the major shareholder (you).

Corporations are disciplined.

They do cash-flow statements monthly, reconcile their bank statements at least that often, and keep meticulous records. So should you. Handling these details isn’t hard, but it does take time.

Unfortunately, we are more willing to watch television than actively manage our money. That wouldn’t fly at the office, (“Sorry boss, but Idol is on right now – make your own copies”), and it won’t at We Inc. either, once you begin to take your own money seriously.

Doing the details at home means setting up files, meeting deadlines, and administering your portfolio. Monthly contributions to a retirement savings plan, regular

repayment of debt and serious attention to cash flow (read: don’t bounce any cheques) are all examples of this discipline. The shoe-box full of financial records and the last-minute scramble to find those tax receipts are good examples of what not to do.

HIRE EXPERTS

Corporations hire consultants, financial advisers and independent external resources to help them get the job done. You, too, should recognize that different tasks require expertise in different areas.

Seeking independent financial information or advice is a good thing to do, especially when you are out of your particular area of expertise.

Use a stockbroker for your investing and an estates lawyer for your will and powers of attorney. Don’t go the route of the generalist and expect your accountant or banker to be your only adviser: the world of money changes so quickly, no single generalist could possibly keep up.

RESULT? HAPPY EMPLOYEES

As the president of We Inc., it is also up to you to ensure your employee – that would be you, again – has a good pension plan, is covered for health and disability and has sufficient life insurance.

Studies show that a clean bedroom can help you sleep better and maintain a healthy lifestyle. After all, we spend a third of our life in bed. We asked Pam Helms, co-founder of the plant-derived household cleaner brand Mrs. Meyer’s, to give us the lowdown on how to clean our bedroom essentials for a sweeter night’s sleep

SHEETS AND PILLOW CASES

MATTRESS PADS

Machine wash cotton blankets in warm water. Wash wool with laundry detergent on the gentle cycle in cold water. Spin blankets in the washer until all excess moisture is extracted.

Gently stretch blankets back to their original size (measure first if you’re not sure what that is) before air drying.

Since these are in close contact with your skin, wash them once a week – or more frequently if someone has been sick.

Wash cotton, cotton blends, flannel, synthetics or bamboo in hot water to kill bacteria; dry them on low. Remember to fold sheets right away so wrinkles won’t set in.

COMFORTERS

Place them in the dryer for just a few minutes to fluff up, and then hang heavy comforters, quilts and wool blankets on several clotheslines to balance out the weight so they won’t stretch. Clean your clotheslines with a damp rag before each use.

Put these in the washer on the gentle cycle, but make sure to use cold water and laundry detergent. If you have a homemade quilt, you don’t want to wash it too often, or it’ll show its wear. If your quilt is an heirloom, have it professionally cleaned.

Wash these once a month (unless they’re soiled, in which case wash them right away!) in hot water and air dry. Doctors may advise allergy and asthma sufferers to wash them more frequently.

RUGS

Wash small cotton or synthetic rugs and bath mats (even those with rubber or latex backings) in cold water on the gentle cycle. Air dry.

CURTAINS

Cotton curtains can be washed in cold water. Air dry, then iron them when they’re slightly damp to get out those wrinkles before they set in.
