Know your rights Rules rules rules. It seems like the landlord, the neighbours and your mother all know what’s best when it comes to how to live your life.

I was visiting a friend recently, and he said the landlord wanted to renew his lease. He explained that every year the landlord would announce whether there was a rent hike or not, and then come over with a new lease to sign. While my friend didn’t particularly mind because his rent is reasonable, the landlord is efficient and he’s not planning on moving any time soon, the fact that each year he was locked into 12 additional months posed a bit of an annoyance.

Truth is, once your initial lease runs out, your occupancy continues month-to-month.

There’s no reason to sign a lease.

Some landlords like to have a lease in place so that they know their tenants aren’t moving and they don’t have to worry about rerenting. Some think it’s a necessity.

Realistically, the landlord has to give you 90 days’ written notice of a rent increase, and that’s it. No lease. No new term.

Another friend recently complained that she could only do laundry between 7pm and 9pm.

“Why?” I asked. Her neighbour had recently decided that, in efforts to keep the shared hydro bill down, laundry could only be used during off-peak hours. The 9pm limit was to keep laundry machines from waking her kids. My friend regularly missed this window.

Neighbours can politely ask, but unless those terms are in the lease, neighbours can’t simply decide on new rules for their own convenience.

And Mom? What she wants, you best just do. She’s your Mom after all!

will hold for us renters. Will communal renting take over?

Will houses cease to exist and be replaced with space-age sleeping pods? Will the government step in and take over rental properties one by one? Will the housing crisis finally take over and force everyone to live in glorified tents?

The future of rental is anyone’s guess, but here are a few ideas that might just be crazy enough to work.

The food replicator In today’s age, we check out the kitchen appliances when we’re looking for a new rental unit. For some, apartment-sized ovens and fridges are deal breakers, while others are satisfied with a hot plate and mini fridge. In years to come, we might be looking more closely at food replicators — machines that will create meals almost instantly!

We’ve seen them in all kinds of shows and movies, from Star Trek to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, but a real-life company has actually developed something revolutionary. White

Innovation has created the Genie — an appliance that allows you to make your selected dish in approximately one minute.

The teleportation lounge Another thing renters often struggle with is finding parking.

In 2117, we hopefully won’t need to worry about that as much because we could just be able to teleport to one another’s homes!

Highrises of the future could include teleportation lounges instead of underground parking — energy efficient, cost effective and faster than driving!

The machine that turns garbage into fertilizer Who needs a garburator when your unit could include a trashreducing-fertilizer-creating device? Imagine being able to turn your trash and recycling into fertilizer for your garden!

We’re well on our way with this one thanks to Whirlpool’s futuristic appliance, the Zera Food Recycler. In the future, appliances like this could be commonplace items in rentals because the world will hopefully be more invested

Robots included Nowadays, many of us look for rental prices that include utilities.

But what if ‘utilities included’ meant something different in the future? What if your rental unit came equipped with a helpful robot? Your robot could help with the cleaning and upkeep of your rental — all the while keeping your landlord happy as it could control appropriate heat levels, as well as perform the usual tasks required to maintain a rental property. It’s a win-win situation. You might just want to confirm that the robot wouldn’t report everything you do to your landlord… Your privacy might be a little compromised.

Furniture of the future You may not want full-scale kitchen appliances like ovens and fridges if you opt for a kitchen with something like a food replicator, which means you would ultimately have more space for furniture. A current annoyance of apartment dwelling is the smaller furniture that can inevitably come along with it. But not in 2117! In 2117, we might have more space due to less appliances and, if we’re lucky, humanity will have created comfortable furniture that can condense and rebuild itself, making for a hassle-free move.

Five ways to make moving a cleaner, greener process

WE NEED TO THINK of the environment with every activity even moving day can be cleaner and Greener, and it doesn’t take much effort.

Waste caused by the moving process not only stems from packing supplies, but also from the waste accumulated over many years within a home. Both can be extremely taxing on the environment if not properly managed. Here are some suggestions on how to make your move a cleaner, Greener process:

1 Plan ahead. Waiting until the last minute to prepare for a move will make any environmental concerns an afterthought. Start early so you have the extra time to sort through recyclable items – in your apartment and in storage – for delivery to recycling depots prior to moving day. Typically your storage contains the highest concentration of recyclable waste, so start the sorting process there first. Consider holding a garage sale or donating gently used but no longer wanted items to a charity rather than have them end up in a landfill site.

2 Research. Survey local recycling options to find the most convenient solution for recyclables. Many cities offer curbside pick-up or “sort and drop” depots. Visit earth911.com for a list of local organizations that can dispose of all types of recyclable materials.

3 Organize. Prepare recyclables by organizing into categories: plastic, glass, aluminum, paper, cardboard, etc. Look up the requirements of the local recycler to see if there are any additional steps needed to prepare recyclables beforehand.

4 Care for hazardous material.

As you clean in preparation to move, be conscientious about the kinds of materials being packed to move with you and which items are to be disposed. Toxic items, such as paint, batteries, house cleaning products, automobile oils, pesticides and fertilizers are dangerous and cannot be transported in the back of a commercial moving truck. Also consider these items cannot be thrown-out with your regular

garbage. Look up the specialized recycling depots for toxic products in your city.

5 Reuse. Do not throw away used moving boxes when the move is complete. A well-made corrugated box is great for storage or may be reused for a future move or passed on to someone else who is moving. Contact local schools or charity organizations, such as women’s shelters, scout troops, and food banks to ask if they need boxes to redistribute donated items. Donating gently used boxes not only reduces waste, but can be a big help in support of a good cause.
