CORYDON AVENUE FLOWS like a

lazy river. Braced by black metal archways, it connects Osborne Village and Confusion Corner at its eastern end to just past Stafford Street at its western edge.

Wildly popular in the summer, this district pumps in the heart of Crescentwood. It’s a great area to get out and enjoy.

Life on Corydon Avenue is always hopping. Traffic is slow as much because of the people watchers cruising past as for the pedestrians themselves. People like to live on Corydon for the love of Little Italy, for the availability of artsy services and trendy restaurants and for the proximity to downtown.

Corydon Avenue is lit with long strings of lights like a marina or market in Italy. Proudly connected to community and known for pasta or pizza, it is also home to stacks of sushi places, cute boutiques and trendy nail and hair services. housing option that requires little maintenance, renting is often the way to go. But depending on your lease and provincial laws, you could end up in a heap of trouble if your dog destroys your carpeted stairs or your teenager drives through the fence.

Sometimes preventing damage is easy, but there are a few circumstances that have less obvious preventative measures. Here’s how to avoid a few overlooked problems that could cause harm to your rental unit.

How to family-proof a rental Toddlers always manage to get into something they shouldn’t – makeup, peanut butter, paint. Kids are basically little peace disturbers.

I once put an entire container of Vaseline into my hair. If you are renting with a toddler, the basic safety latches and locks on cabinets, drawers and toilets are good, but here’s a couple more ways to avoid disaster with toddlers and their older siblings.

Put doorknob covers on bathroom doors If the door stays closed, toddlers (and pets) can’t get into anything hidden away in the bathroom — including, but not limited to, toilet water, makeup, powders, creams and garbage. We all know you can’t watch the wee one every second of every day, so this is the next best thing.

Cover floor vents with tulle Let’s all admit we’ve thrown something down the vent at some point in our lives. My sister admits she threw her nail polish down one. Avoid serious damage by covering your vents with tulle. By doing so air can still get by but trinkets cannot.

Install shut-off valves on faucets and shower heads While this is actually intended to promote water conservation, shut-off valves that can be placed on faucets and shower heads also limit flood opportunities because the water cannot be left running.

Buy a door stop and wall protector In my childhood home we used to ram our front door into the wall behind it all the time. I swear it felt like we made a doorknob-shaped hole in that wall every week.

Buy a strong doorstop that can withstand a family of five busting into the house, and place a wall protector on the wall for when the doorstop fails.

How to dog-proof your rental I love dogs, but it’s true that they can cause a mess and literally destroy homes. Here’s how to make sure your landlord doesn’t regret their decision to be pet friendly.

Gates and crates If your pup seems to want to eat everything, make no mistake, he will eat the stairs and the walls.

Crate training will not only protect your rental unit, but it will help with separation anxiety. Baby gates on stairs or across entrances is another way to protect your unit as it ensures your pup only goes where you want him to.

Don’t buy one of those mesh crates if you have a spirited dog.

My friend’s dog chewed through hers, took down the Christmas tree and chewed up a can of WD40 (at his boyfriend’s mom’s house).

How to frat-proof a rental If you’re renting somewhere where bed bugs and cockroaches are a concern, there are a few

easy things you can do to prevent those unwanted visitors.

Seal gaps around windows and doors Buy some caulking and seal up holes anywhere you think bugs might be able to crawl in.

Cockroaches are attracted to filth, so if you have dirty neighbours, you could be at risk even if your place is clean.

Buy bedding encasements Buying a mattress and box spring protector won’t stop bugs from entering your home, but it will make it easier to deal with them should they find their way in.

Spilled flour, coloured-on walls and noise complaints are badat-the-time events that become funny stories down the road, but flooded floors, torn-up stairs and poor credit are things that will haunt your renting future. Know how to help yourself and take a few precautions to make sure your home is protected against rental disasters.

We had so much fun speaking with Dunn the last time we hit our spring cleaning regime that we went back to discover more disgusting things we’re doing at home. We’re just as horrified, and upping the ante this year on our spring cleaning — and our year round routine.

» The problem: You probably don’t want to know how dirty your mattress and pillows are, and you may not be able to sleep after you hear what Dunn has to say, but if you’re not using a good mattress protector, washing it once a month and vacuuming your mattress, Dunn explains that “you’ve got some lively behaviour beneath you at night! Mattresses and pillows are full of fungus and bacteria, and let’s not forget dust mites.

You’re sweating, you’re excreting oils, shedding skin cells, and dust mites feast on skin cells. If they’re eating, they’re excreting,” chimes Dunn. “A mattress gains 10 per cent of its weight over the course of its lifetime — oils, mites, mite poo, skin cells. A typical mattress has between 100,000 and 10,000,000 dust mites feasting!” » The solution: Keep it covered and keep it clean. You should have a good mattress cover, one that’s waterproof and impervious to your skin cells and bodily secretions. You need to remove that cover once a month and wash it. “Laundering the cover regularly and vacuuming helps too. The vacuum gets rid of skin cells and mites. When removing the mattress cover, vacuum the mattress. Use the vacuum’s crevice tool to get right into the creases.”

You should also keep your pillows in protectors. Pillows do break down over time and should be replaced regularly.

But as an experienced renter, you’re able to decode any cricks and cracks in your home and do minor repairs yourself. If not, you have your landlord on speed dial.

2. Why buy when you can DIY? Your rental is your home and naturally you want it to reflect your personality and taste. Yet, you always put off investing in good decor and furniture because you’re only renting. Never mind you’ve been only renting for the last 3 years. 7 WHEN YOU MOVE your home or office, of course you want your belongings to arrive at their destination location safely, with nothing broken or misplaced.

But there are other forms of safety and security that are also worth important consideration, whether you are moving yourself or hiring a professional mover. For example, Items are being transferred to and from the truck or vehicles. How can you be sure nothing will go missing when everyone who is dong the moving is in the house or apartment?

At Two Men and a Truck - Canada, we dispatch movers in teams of three so that one person can be with the truck at all times, supervising the job and keeping an eye on your belongings. Should you be moving yourself, be careful running your own move with friends and family that those involved don’t get so caught up in carrying items in and out they leave vehicles unattended. This is particularly important when moving out of and into an apartment building or condominium, when elevator trips may mean those carrying the items are gone from the moving vehicle for extended periods of time.

Another safety aspect is ensuring that no one gets hurt during your move.

Professional movers are trained to lift correctly and have strapping and other aides that help to move bulky items. We also understand fragility and treat delicate items with the care they deserve. Untrained people who help you may inadvertently cause damage because they lack the know-how of how to move certain items. Movers have special packing materials, labels and loading/ unloading techniques in place to protect these cherished pieces.

If you are planning a business move, it is wise to hire a professional mover and sit down with the move consultant to develop a plan. For example, long before the actual move, begin shredding unneeded documents to save time and money, and to avoid unwanted confusion at either end.

Moving electronic storage equipment and servers can be tricky.

personally to protect them. Be sure to create an inventory of these items, take photos of them and provide a copy to the mover.

Another aspect of a move that clients may neglect is the ability of the drivers. People who choose a DIY move usually rent a truck or trailer, but are they actually skilled enough, experienced or even trained to drive the vehicle safely? If you are not used to driving with a heavy load in a vehicle it can be risky. A professional moving company provides trained drivers who are used to driving safely from point A to B with your belongings in tow. If you need to store items for a period of time, ask your mover if they have a storage facility that is climate controlled and insured against floods, fire, theft, and the like.

A mover who offers full insurance with professional and bonded employees relieves you of the worry and stress of these kinds of safety and security issues. You can DIY, but in the end, is it worth it?
