The grass isn’t greener There’s this myth that renting is inferior to homeownership. That’s simply not true.

The argument for homeownership is that you’re building equity, making money by owning a home. Yes, this part is true. But it’s not the only investment, it’s just one option,forced savings.

Renting is a smart move, financially, and can be equally – if not better if you do it right.

Renting is less expensive than owning. Renting is a fixed fee, easy to budget because of its stability. It increases incrementally – but it offers no surprise fees.

A house will always need work – a roof, furnace, windows, a plumber, an appliance – it’s all out of pocket. A lawnmower and snowblower – that’s not just money, but labour, too. If you’re thinking condo – remember those

EAST KILDONAN IS a popular

suburb running west from the Red River to Panet Rd. on the east and again north from Oakland Ave. almost to Harbison Ave. in the south. Largely residential and stretching down Henderson Highway, E.K. residents constantly course downtown over the Disraeli Freeway.

Those who call East Kildonan home know the community by heart – this is a community with deep roots and a lot of long time residents. They’ve gone to school there or started a family there.

Some like the access to other parts

of the city while others are hardcore locals who wouldn’t venture past the bridge.

Life in this big neighbourhood is busy for families – and for traffic.

Teens hang out after school near the malls while young parents play at the pool or stroll down the sidewalks. The many parks and pathways also attract young singles in the summer who bike or rollerblade with a friend or a pet.

Locals vary from Harley Davidson fans to Winnipeg Jets fans. Working class and middle income families find housing fairly affordable here, especially east

of Henderson Highway. Further west, along the river, bigger, more affluent homes have more seclusion and winding, seemingly exclusive roads. However, lush, green groves and bustling community centres are on both sides of the road with many trails teeming with activity.

East Kildonan is home to two school divisions, and there are many small parks and many acres for leisure activity in outreaching Kil-Cona Regional Park.

Put some spring into your decor!

EACH YEAR AS SPRING approaches, I typically see a surge of people wanting to spruce up their decor.

There are so many easy and affordable things people can do to dramatically update their space while keeping function, style and budget top of mind.

Consider swapping out some accessories for lighter, brighter options. I love working with white on white (all different tones/shades of white) to create a fresh, bright palette. Flowers are mandatory too – I cannot live without flowers – and they scream spring!

Feeling the itch for a more dramatic change this spring? I’ve recently launched a new line of Jo Alcorn wall paper in patterns that are guaranteed to give your mood a lift and make you feel like you’ve made a dramatic change with a little DIY magic.

Think you have to turn off your fireplace and forget about it until fall rolls around? Think again!

Dimplex has stunning units that operate with no heat; you can keep them on during the spring and summer on cool, rainy days when you want that comfy, cozy feel of a fire but without the heat. One unit I recently styled is a new type from Dimplex called Revillusion. It can run all summer long with a no-heat option to keep a romantic, relaxing feel going strong in the warmer months.

If you have an electric fire place, or even a wood burning unit, you can redecorate it to match your spring decor. HomeSense is my go-to when I want to change any decor easily, and with very little expense.

For mantel decor in the summer months I recommend light, airy and fun accessories.

Spring is always a great time to organize and make small changes that will add huge functionality to your home. Adding in soft close hardware and drawer organizers can sometimes make it feel like you have a brand new space. GRASS, a manufacturer of soft close drawer and cupboard systems, has a new line called Tavinea which is an interior drawer system that is modularly built so it can easily be tailored to your personal specifications. The days of the junk drawer will be limited after this addition.

If you have open shelving or glass cabinet doors, another option to update your decor is to change your glassware and plates. I love to pull these out early in the season and get them on display – they give my kitchen an instant spring feel – I’m all for making it feel like the warmer months will be here soon! Walmart has a great selection of outdoor plates and glasses that are sure to please and fit the needs to everyone.

Spring really does inspire us to organize, air out, and freshen up, but a spot that people often overlook is the laundry room or storage space – an area that receives very little attention. I assure you, if you spend a

Try to secure a corner unit If you’re looking to rent in a building, look for a corner unit so that you can set up your bedroom in a room that doesn’t share a wall with anyone. This will avoid the usual noises shared between thin walls in buildings, and ultimately help avoid frustration between neigbours.

WHEN YOU HAVE TO GET UP EARLY

for work, you don’t appreciate when your neighbour plays music a little too late or seems to be catching up on housework.

But “early” and “late” are defined differently for everyone depending on work schedules.

The world does not function on nine-to-fivers alone. There are many jobs that demand roundthe-clock workers — doctors, nurses, waiters, bartenders, flight attendants, police officers — the list goes on.

As a shift worker, your sleep cycle is likely disrupted by the everyday hustle and bustle of your neighbours, in the same way theirs would be disrupted by your routine in the middle of the night.

For those of you renting that are on an off-schedule, here are some tips on how to survive rental life.

Buy earplugs Earplugs are great even if you don’t work shiftwork! A friend of mine with roommates swears by them. Generally speaking, most cities do not allow excessive noise before 7 a.m. or after 11 p.m., so if your sleep pattern falls in between those times, earplugs will save you hours of tossing and turning. If you normally come home from work around 4 a.m., wind down and go to bed around 5 a.m., only to then be woken up by the family upstairs prepping for their day, invest in a good pair of earplugs. They will help you sleep through the commotion.

Avoid a unit with southern exposure For some, a southern exposure unit is a highly coveted rental spot because it garners more sunlight

Talk to your neighbours There are some noise rules that exist, but for the most part, they do not benefit the overnight worker.

Let your neighbours know your schedule to warn them of any everyday noise on your end. This will (hopefully) encourage them to be aware of their own regular noise in the morning when they are getting ready or when they are coming home in the evening. It can be hard to work in shifts — if you get home from work at 11 p.m. and need to clean your house, will your neighbours mind if you pull out the vacuum? Talk to each other and sort out what will work and what won’t. Just because you don’t work 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. doesn’t mean you should have to give up your own routine, but you also need to be mindful — and so do your neighbours.
