s you know, one of the biggest considerations you’re faced with when it comes to choosing a rental is your choice of location. Unlike furniture, paint and decor, it’s the one thing that you cannot change, so it’s important to choose well. What are the critical things to consider when choosing a location? There are so many personal variables it’s really up to you to decide. As an example, if it is just as important to you to be close to your children’s school as it is to your place of work, then look for a place that offers you the best of both worlds. If you own a car and want to use public transportation whenever possible to save on parking and gas costs, a well-connected mass transit location may be a better option for you. If you’re a walker, close proximity to major amenities should be a definite consideration. Doing errands such as grocery shopping and banking on foot has many health benefits and gives you a chance to meet your neighbours and discover new places too. Don’t let the cost of rent solely dictate your choice of location. Make a list of your priorities first, and then take the time to assess each location for its merits and weigh your options.

Then embrace the opportunity, go out and find that perfect new place to call home. Sometimes, even though life has changed and a new apartment is necessary, moving can feel too overwhelming or inconvenient to take on the challenge and make the effort. While there isn’t an honest person alive that will tell you moving is easy or effortless, you can minimize the impact, stress and headaches by planning it out carefully. The first step is deciding what you want. Get a few points down on paper, such as: location, size, necessary amenities and budget. Be realistic and know the difference between your ideal and the market reality. Start looking. Look in advance so you get a feel for what the market has to offer. If you like something, put your name on the wait list. Get your finances in order and your references in check. Start streamlining your possessions. If you’re moving with children you’ll have to get their stuff in order too. If you start getting your move in order well before you actually give your notice and sign your lease there will be much less to do once the 60-day countdown is on. With this in mind, you’re ready for a winter move, and we’re here to help. Giving kids a financial head-start
E
xperts estimate that it costs close to $200,000 to raise a child from birth to age 18, not counting post-secondary education. So when a new child joins a family, parents and grand-parents tend to think about starting an education fund like a Registered Education Savings Plan. While this is a very practical way to help the child get a head-start in life, it’s a tactic that’s limited to their education years. To find out if there are other long-term options to help get kids on the right financial path into their adulthood, we checked in with the life insurance experts from Desjardins Insurance for their advice: What would you suggest as another long-term savings product for children? One option is a life insurance policy for the child that is purchased by the parents, grand-parents or another friend or family member. The child will then be protected for his entire life and can take advantage of an added savings component that is tax exempt.

Your suggestion of a life insurance for a child is very unusual— Yes, that’s true. However, it’s the built-in savings component, not necessarily the death benefit that makes this an attractive solution. TheRentersGuide.ca
how does it work? The insurance policy is purchased by the parents, grand-parent or another friend or family member on behalf of the child. The insurance premium is determined by the child’s age, health and other details. This amount remains level over a set number of years and never increases. Part of the premiums accumulate in a separate, tax-sheltered account and over time a portion of the cash value can be used to pay the policy premiums. What happens when they’ve grown up? When the child reaches the age of majority, the policy ownership can be transferred to them and continues to protect them for life. At this point, all the premiums may have been paid. What’s great about this insurance is that it provides the child with a head-start on life. For example, the policy can be used as collateral when applying for a loan. Also, the child may have the option of purchasing more insurance without a medical review. This is called a Guaranteed Insurability Benefit. can they access the cash value? But what if you have family or friends whose birthday falls in January. You’ll have to buy something. No you don’t. You can give something of yourself instead of something purchased. Make their favorite cookies, offer to cook them a meal or a bunch of meals for the freezer for those extra busy workdays, or create a coupon for three nights of free babysitting. Maybe you’re a computer genius and can offer to do maintenance or repairs. Perhaps you’re a mechanic and can offer a tune-up. Substitute your energy for spending money. After the buzz of the holidays you’ll no doubt be happy to stay home for the first couple of weeks. Then you may start feeling itchy. You’ve got to get out. You can feel the walls closing in. Time to hit that great new restaurant that just opened up, or head out to the clubs. Wait a minute. This is Make Do Month.
Enter Make Do Month. This is the month when you stretch everything a little farther so you spend a lot less. If you get invited to a party, you don’t rush out and buy something new, you get creative and shop your closet. And if you need a little something different, you shop a friend’s closet. Or hold a clothing exchange. What you don’t do is spend money. When the weather is warm, it’s easy to do lots of free things. When it’s cold, entertainment gets more expensive. Sure there’s that great movie you’d love to take the family to for a night out of the house. For a family of four, you’re probably looking at $100 or more with popcorn and drinks. Recycle a movie you already own or do a movie swap with friends, add some home-made popcorn and a 12pack of pop and you can probably do it for $10. Now that’s making do. January is also a good month to experiment with a new routine as you make do. If you’re used to buying coffee every day, brew your own at home or work and save big-time. If you regularly go out for lunch, pack one from home for four out of TheRentersGuide.ca every five days and not only will you drop those holiday pounds, you’ll be able to pay off that holiday debt.
Call up a couple of friend and throw a pot-luck game night instead. See if you can do it at their house this time. Start a tradition of once a month game or poker nights and rotate from one friend’s home to another. No one says you can’t have fun in Make Do Month. You just can’t spend gobs of money. Make Do Month is a conscious decision to stretch every dollar as far as it’ll go. Try it and see if just becoming conscious save you money. I’ll bet your pleasantly surprised.

Heat the oven to 350°F. Break the cauliflower into medium-sized florets and put them in a pot with a teaspoon of salt, cover with water and simmer for 15 minutes until quite soft. Strain, and leave in the colander for a few minutes to cool and get rid of all the water. While the cauliflower’s cooking, prepare the batter. Halve the red onion and cut a few thin rings off the end of one side and set aside – these will go on top of the cake – coarsely chop the rest. Heat the oil in a pan and on a low heat, sauté the chopped onion and rosemary for eight minutes. Remove from the heat and allow to cool down. Once cool, whisk in the eggs then stir in the basil. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, turmeric, cheese, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt and many grinds of black pepper, then add it to the egg mixture, whisking thoroughly to remove any lumps. Stir in the cauliflower very gently, so that most pieces remain whole.

nspired by a recipe from Yotam Ottolenghi’s food column, The New Vegetarian, in Britain’s Guardian newspaper, this spectacular dish is part of his ongoing campaign to give cauliflower some well-earned glory. Ottolenghi’s light and wonderfully flavourful Cauliflower Cake is similar to a Spanish tortilla, but what makes it unusual is the addition of almost a dozen eggs, baking powder and the quantity of flour. The finished dish is rather like a firm omelet that slices like a cake, but instead of being humdrum, as baked egg dishes can often be, the addition of a whole head of cooked cauliflower, sautéed red onion, grated parmesan cheese, ground turmeric, minced rosemary, fresh basil – and Ottolenghi’s ever-so-clever touch of baking it all in a springform pan lined with black sesame seeds – makes this a deliciously unique and completely addictive dish. Kept chilled, Ottolenghi’s saffron-hued onion-speckled Cauliflower Cake tastes even better the next day. That is, if it lasts that long!
Line the bottom of a 9-inch round springform pan with parchment paper, and brush the sides generously with butter. Pour the sesame seeds into the pan and roll them around so that they stick to the sides, tipping out those that don’t adhere. Pour in the cauliflower batter, arranging the reserved onion rings on top, and bake in the center of the oven for 45 minutes, until golden brown and set. To remove the cake, gently release the springform pan so that the seeded crust remains intact. Serve warm or at room temperature with a light salad.
