SO, RECREATIONAL CANNABIS IS LEGAL...

Oct. 17 came and went without much ado – well, except for the fact that the recreational use of cannabis became legal in Canada. You may think this has nothing to do with you; you don’t smoke anything at all and never will. Or you do smoke and are thrilled you are no longer doing something illegal.

The rules regarding recreational cannabis use vary across the country and within cities. In Manitoba, where you can or cannot smoke marijuana is pretty much the same as cigarette and alcohol consumption. So for example, you can’t drink alcohol in public — on a bus, a sidewalk, at the beach, or in your car — so by extension, you can’t consume marijuana there either.

But what about in the privacy of your apartment? If you’re a homeowner in Winnipeg, no problem, but it’s a different story for renters. When it comes to condos and rented residences, including apartment complexes, you may or may not be allowed to consume cannabis. Many buildings have nonsmoking status and some property owners may move in that direction as well. If smoking recreational marijuana is your thing, the next time you look for an apartment, make sure the landlord allows cannabis consumption so you can light up in the comfort and privacy of your home.

If you want to have a happy holiday that doesn’t leave you holding your aching head when the bills roll in come January, you have to start planning early. The longer you wait, the more you’re prone to give in to stress, make impulse purchases, blow your budget or even buy a lame gift.

Look at your holiday spending as you would any other big-ticket item. While you’re splitting the cost among a variety of expenses, the bottom line is still the same – you’re spending a lot of money in a short period of time.

• Serve brunch, throw a fingerfood party or host a wine and cheese tasting instead of a fullblown turkey dinner.

• Co-host a party with a pal or sibling, and share the cost.

• Make sure you set a dollar limit for your soirée. And list the items, ingredients and décor you’ll need and how much each will cost.

Remember, the best gifts don’t have to cost money. If you’re financially challenged this year, offer up your time babysitting, cooking meals, house cleaning, massaging, sewing, knitting, transporting, or whatever else you’re good at. Clip a picture of the service you’ll provide and be clear on how often, as in “I’ll babysit one weekend a month from February to June.” Or better yet, make your own coupon book.

In our new home, we had a lot to accomplish in order to create a modern playroom and functional home office. The result is amazing – and I hope it can inspire you, too!

KEEP THE PALETTE BLACK AND WHITE

I love colour, but I wanted to try something different and edgy in my basement. Creating this space has shown me the power of a minimal palette of black and white. The way to keep things interesting is to vary your patterns but within the black and white theme. Think stripes, geometric prints and high contrast cabinetry.

UTILIZE FLOOR-TO-CEILING CABINETRY

Putting in floor-to-ceiling cabinetry is my secret weapon in playrooms. This allows you to hide all the visual clutter and chaos that comes with toys, books, cards and all that fun stuff behind beautiful, 22 Renters Guide | Oct. 26–Nov. 9, 2018

closed storage. You get to close the door on visual clutter, and it is a big reason why I love spending time in this room. I worked with Tailored Living (tailoredliving.com) in this space. They make it so convenient for you to achieve organizational goals.

I wanted high contrast in the cabinetry, so I chose white modern shaker cabinets on the perimeter of the room, and dark drawer fronts on this generous island that allows my kids ample room to spread out and get messy. I used laminate for its durability as well as its accessible price point. To add a bit of sparkle to the space, I added handmade, rustic pulls by Shayne Fox Hardware (shaynefoxhardware.com).

KEEP THE BLACK MATTE

I chose to put a sink in this space, as it’s so practical with my seven little kids. In keeping with my monochromatic colour scheme, I chose Delta’s (deltafaucet.ca) new Esque faucet. And, I continued the matte black with the wall paint colour. I don’t think I would have been as bold to do this if I did not have so much natural light in this space – but I’m so pleased with how this Wrought Iron colour

Whenever I use dark shades, I like using it with a matte finish, as opposed to eggshell or satin. It’s rich and lush and I love its modern look.

We had large individual portraits of my children blown up to fit these inexpensive frames. This might be my favourite element in my basement. We hung them around our TV about three inches apart, and it creates a graphic element that makes me smile every time I enter the room. Keeping things black and white helps the TV blend in.

Put years past behind you and make a few simple changes. These tips will help replace the holiday stress with holiday joy.

AVOID GIFTS THAT CLUTTER: Give

gifts that can be consumed rather than those that take up space.

Consider giving candles, gourmet food baskets, vintage wines, fresh floral arrangements, jams and jellies, etc. Gift certificates are also appreciated by those who want to streamline their homes.

CLEAR AWAY THE ‘EVERY DAY’:

For more impact and less clutter, remove your every day decorative items from tabletops and mantles before you display your holiday decorations. You can store them temporarily in the boxes that held your decorations.

HELP FOR THE HOST: Hosting

a holiday soirée this year? Don’t be a superhero – accept help.

Make it a potluck. People enjoy contributing and it makes the meal more interesting. While you’re at it, consider putting your kids to work during the event or hiring students to help out. MAKE IT MEANINGFUL: Connect to what the holidays are really all about – spending time and making special memories with the people you love. As we move into November and December, make time for doing fun things together, like baking cookies, going downtown to see the holiday lights and festive store windows, renting a favourite family movie or going skating at the local rink.

An effective way to make time for these activities is to let go of the need to create the perfect home, buy the perfect gifts, and cook the perfect holiday meal. Perfection is unattainable, no matter how organized and talented you are (especially this time of year).

your holiday gifts to out-of-town friends/family early to avoid rush postage costs and long lineups at the post office.

Consider paying by debit instead of credit when shopping for gifts

day to catch up on unfinished business like filing, returning calls, etc. Most of these ‘loose ends’ take only a few minutes, but are put off because they don’t seem urgent.

However, you still worry about getting them done, and it takes up space in your brain. Eliminate these energy leaks and you will be free to enjoy your holidays. Hire help if you need to.

UNDER-DECORATE: If you find

it overwhelming to decorate every room of your home for the holidays, consider decorating one or two rooms you’ll use the most over the season and see how you feel. Chances are you and your family won’t miss the extra knickknacks. You will be especially appreciative when it comes time to take down the decorations and put them away.

WHEN MOVING, EVERYONE WINS PLAYING BY THE RULES

CHUCK RESNICK When hiring a professional mover, one expects to have your possessions packed and/or transported safely. It is a common expectation, also shared by your movers. However, sometimes movers may be unable to take some of your belongings onto their truck.

Federal and provincial regulations prohibit movers from transporting hazardous materials such as – but not limited to – propane canisters, flammables or gasoline cans unless they are empty of fuel, as well as paints, solvents, firearms or anything deemed to be a hazardous material. It is important for consumers to understand what can and cannot be moved before the day arrives.

If you have items of extraordinary value such as paintings, sculptures and antiques, let your mover know ahead of time. The issue here is insurance.

The basic package your mover offers may not cover these pricey goods. You may need to arrange for additional insurance. Your renter’s insurance policy may even have a rider for goods in transit. It’s best to check with your insurance company.

It is critical to know and understand how much insurance your moving company carries.

Most provinces have a “Condition of Carriage” and most movers have their own set insurance amount. For example, at Two Men and a Truck - Canada, you are insured up to $250,000, and we offer replacement cost with a $250 deductible.

Extremely large items and tough-to-move items such as pianos, pool tables and massive wall units are a challenge. These types of large items should be discussed before moving day. We do move them every day. We use a piano board that makes it easier to move a baby grand, but it is

much harder to move an upright piano, which takes muscle power, heavy duty dollies and a truck with a lift gate.

Another “rule” to be aware of if you live in an apartment building or condominium is arranging with your super or property manager to reserve the elevator for the time of your move.

Right up front, you should determine how this process works.

Let your mover know where the loading/unloading zone is, or whether they will have to walk items through the lobby to get to the elevator. The more your mover knows, the more accurate their estimate will be.

No one likes moving day surprises, including your mover.

Communication is key. So, once we all know where we stand, we can work together for a successful move.
