WHAT’S THE RIGHT SIZE RENTAL FOR YOUR PERSONALITY? How do you know which rental is the best for you? Once you determine your budget for rent, utilities and even the neighbourhood in which you’d like to live, it’s important to understand your ‘apartment personality’ before you start your search.

Are you the type of person who likes lots of space in which to roam and put your stuff? If so, you may consider renting a large loft with 12-ft. ceilings and lots of windows and square footage. Conversely, if you hate to clean and are a bit of a minimalist, consider a studio or onebedroom apartment. Your utility bills will be less and you won’t need a ton of furniture. If you work from home and want a designated room as an office, a one-bedroom with den may suit your style. And if you’re a social butterfly who loves to be around people, an apartment with two or more bedrooms for roommates, and a large kitchen and dining room for entertaining, may fit the bill.

What happens if a landlord has a vision of the ideal tenant – and it’s not you?

While we’d like to believe Canada offers equal opportunities when it comes to housing, some landlords may discriminate against prospective tenants. If they do, they are breaking the law. It is illegal to discriminate against a tenant on the basis of race, skin colour, religion, nationality, marital or family status, gender/sex (including pregnancy and gender identity),

sexual orientation, pet ownership, physical disability, intellectual disability and source of income.

How can you ensure your personal circumstances don’t somehow work against you? Know what information your landlord can ask you to provide.

Landlords have the right to ask: Whether you work, and where; your income; how many people will be living with you, and what their names are; if you smoke; to provide references from previous landlords; and whether you give permission for a credit check. They may ask whether you have pets, but only in B.C. can landlords actually restrict pets on their premises.

Landlords cannot ask: Your marital status; age; sexual orientation; ethnicity; religion; citizenship; if you receive social assistance; if you are pregnant or plan to have (more) children.

When you’re asked about such things, remind the landlord they don’t have the right to ask (or know), and also make a point of reporting that individual’s actions.

There’s a certain amount of common sense when it comes to how to behave in an elevator.

Unfortunately, many people have forgotten their elevator etiquette.

1. Out first, then in. Allow passengers to exit before attempting to board the elevator.

2. Take the stairs if you are only going one or two floors, except if the elevator is empty or you have a cart, stroller, large packages or are disabled.

3. Hold the door for others who are running to catch the elevator.

4. If you’re sick, wait for an empty elevator. If that is impossible, don’t cough and sneeze for the duration of the ride and never put your germ-infested hands on the floor buttons.

5. If you are first on the elevator or closest to the control panel, ask other riders what floor they would like.

6. When other passengers board, move a little to give everyone some personal space.

7. Avoid carrying out interpersonal conversations, be they face-toface or on your cellphone. The elevator is not a phone booth.

8. If you’re listening to your iPod, turn down the volume so you don’t disturb other riders.

9. If you’re carrying a backpack,

make sure it doesn’t land in someone’s face when you turn around.

10. Never drop litter or deface the walls of the elevator. Vandalism hurts everyone.

Remember, a little elevator etiquette goes a long way. Now, enjoy the ride!
