There are three components to look for when purchasing authentic quality sheets:

The Type of coTTon. Long staple cotton is considered to be the best in the world, due to the strength and softness of its long fibres. Egyptian and American Pima are two of the world’s best cottons.

Where The fabric is Woven.

Italian mills are the world’s foremost experts thanks to their long history of weaving and superior technology. Sheets woven in Italy, or other parts of Europe such as Portugal and Switzerland, will typically be of a higher quality than parts of the world where weaving is a more recent industry and technology is not quite as advanced.

The Thread counT. Look for a thread count higher than 200 (less than 200 is called muslin), but remember, thread count is a personal preference. It’s all about determining what feel you like best. Do you prefer your sheets to feel soft or crisp? Fine or heavy? It’s up to you! What matters most is that the sheet has the very best raw materials: Longstaple Egyptian or Pima cotton, and a superior weave.

ST. VITAL BETWEEN TWO RIVERS

DAWN PETER St. Vital is a sprawling suburban area in Winnipeg wading far and wide between two rivers.

The Red River marks the west boundary and the Seine River marks the east. Carriere Avenue is the northern boundary and the rural municipality of Ritchot is the southern boundary.

Newer, amenity-oriented neighbourhoods dominate the landscape in clusters in smiling St. Vital. The suburban style of family living close to the country gets richer in the south, but all homes and residents seem fairly prosperous and settled. Old St. Vital has some francophone history, yet it’s largely overshadowed by modern cosmopolitan consumers who want to shop and live in luxury by the river.

As the middle child in a French family of three sisters, St. Vital starts out as gregariously urban with long rows of strip malls braided 8 Renters Guide | Aug. 16–30, 2019

alongside a huge shopping mall and cosy middle-class lots near the river. Furthest south, the landscape suddenly becomes rural, running past shops into pastures of prairie grass and corn mazes. Professional residents know how to maneouvre around roadblocks from busy Bishop Grandin Boulevard to the farmers’ markets.

Starting out traditionally Francophone, St. Vital has grown and significantly changed over the years. Decades ago, she became overwhelmingly Anglophone, but now there is a lot of variation between neighbourhoods and more ethnic diversity among new residents. More seniors typically reside along the northwest and residents with higher incomes and education are located further south.

St. Vital offers a lot for middleincome families. A smaller budget might find North St. Vital more central and affordable. Big budgets build in the south.

The growing trend toward diversity and demand for new housing has made St. Vital homeownership-competitive.

With Baby Boomers retiring, there is also a growing need for multi-family homes and services. Apartments, condos and townhouses situated close to the malls and main bus routes have much to offer with balconies, granite counters, large suites with lofts and some with a highrise view.

Traffic is constant east to west and on main cross streets, covering large expanses of land by high-speed roads. Buses are frequent, especially at the northern intersections. Pedestrians and cyclists congregate closer to the south by the mall or on residential streets. A trip to the airport could be half an hour.

Major parks and centres include St. Vital Park near the Red River, Maple Grove at the southern tip, plus Jonathan Toews Community Centre and St. Vital Centennial Arena.

St. Vital is loved by residents and visitors. The shopping is stupendous, but a car is a must.

To have a room of one’s own, as famously championed by Virginia Woolf, is a necessity for a woman writer. In modern times, more women (and men), whether writers or not, are taking advantage of financial independence to enjoy the benefits of solitary living. In our overcrowded world, with incessant advertising, stimulation and pollution of all sorts, living alone provides a sanctuary for the soul.

It’s a respite for the individual who needs to recharge, with somewhat surprising social and creative implications.

Primary among the benefits of living alone is the freedom afforded to come and go as one likes, do as one pleases, and not answer to anyone. There is no need to deal with others’ preferences in the areas of music, food, decorating, entertainment, temperature and above all, cleanliness. Only one person’s mess to clean up, one person’s laundry, one person’s dishes… ah, heavenly!

Other perks are privacy and the opportunity for full self-expression.

No one is present to cramp one’s style. Wandering the house in all manner of (un)dress is perfectly acceptable, as is ordering in at 3 a.m., having spontaneous dance parties, and leaving the dishes unwashed for days. likely to be written without the distraction of others.

When one does desire company, it is by choice. Eric Klinenberg, author of the book The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone, found that people who lived alone spent more time with friends and neighbours than married couples. Apparently, so-called ‘loners’ have the best of both worlds, quiet when they want it and company when they want it.

The benefit of guaranteed quiet at home is a welcome contrast to the outside world. Especially for introverts, who recharge by spending time alone, this living arrangement is desirable and potentially essential for their wellbeing. Home becomes an oasis, a place of restorative solitude.

A single inhabitant home can

also be a castle. Knowing that everything is just where one left it (excepting mischievous pets), is a feature not available to multi-person households. It’s grounding and stabilizing. Not to mention that the last piece of cake is never eaten by someone else.

So if you think about it, for reasons of social health, peace of mind, self-expression and creativity, solitary living is on the upswing.

Virginia would certainly approve.

Eight energy-saving idEas

for renters Whether you rent an apartment, townhouse or a home, these tips will help you to be more energy efficient and save money. If there are things you can’t change on your own, share these tips and encourage your landlord to make a change for the better.

1. Lighting is one of the easiest places to start saving energy.

Replacing your five most frequently used light fixtures or the bulbs in them with Energy Star certified LED lights can save more than $65 a year in energy costs.

• Turn off the lights when you leave a room. Turning off just one 60-watt incandescent bulb that would otherwise burn eight hours a day can save about $15 a year!

2. Considering purchasing a room air conditioner? Buy an Energy Star-qualified model. It will use at least 10 per cent less energy than standard models. Be sure the unit fits tightly in the window so outdoor air does not get in.

3. Consumer electronics play an increasingly larger role in your home’s energy consumption, accounting for 15 per cent of household electricity use. Many electronics use energy even when switched off. Unplug any battery chargers or power adapters when not in use (like your cell phone charger!). Use a power strip as a central “turn off” point when you are done using equipment. And even when turned off, electronic and IT equipment often use a small amount of electricity. office equipment, this stand-by or “phantom” power load can range from a few watts to as much as 20 or even 40 watts for each piece of equipment.

Using a power strip for your computer and all peripheral equipment allows you to completely disconnect the power supply from the power source, eliminating standby power consumption.

4. A 10-minute shower can use less water than a full bath.

With a low-flow showerhead, a 10-minute shower will use about 25 gallons of water, saving five gallons of water over a typical bath. A new showerhead will also save energy — up to $145 each year on electricity — beating out both the bath and an oldfashioned showerhead.

5. To keep out the heat of the summer sun, close window shades and drapes during the day.

6. Run the dishwasher with a full load and use the air-dry option if available.

7. Wash your laundry with cold water whenever possible. To save water, try to wash full loads or, if you must wash a partial load, reduce the level of water appropriately. Washing full loads can save you more than 3,400 gallons of water each year.

8. Don’t over-dry your clothes.

Remember to clean the lint trap before every load. Dry full loads or reduce drying time for partial loads. One of the easiest things to increase drying efficiency is to clean the lint trap before each and every load. This step can also save up to $34 a year.

QUILTS

Machine wash cotton blankets in warm water. Wash wool with laundry detergent on the gentle cycle in cold water. Spin blankets in the washer until all excess moisture is gone. Gently stretch them back to their original size before air drying.

Wash on the gentle cycle, but make sure to use cold water and laundry detergent. For a homemade quilt, don’t wash it too often, or it’ll show its wear. If your quilt is an heirloom, have it professionally cleaned.

SHEETS AND PILLOW CASES Wash once a week – or more frequently if someone has been sick. Wash cotton, cotton blends, flannel, synthetics or bamboo in hot water; dry on low. Fold sheets right away so wrinkles won’t set in.

COMFORTERS Place them in the dryer for just a few minutes to fluff up, and then hang heavy comforters, quilts and wool blankets on several clotheslines to balance out the weight so they won’t stretch.

MATTRESS PADS Wash once a month in hot water and air dry. (If soiled, wash right away!)

RUGS Wash small cotton or synthetic rugs and bath mats (even those with rubber or latex backings) in cold water on the gentle cycle. Air dry.

CURTAINS Wash cotton curtains in cold water. Air dry, then iron while slightly damp to get out wrinkles.

HOW TO PASS PASS: PLAN + ACTION + STICK-TO-IT-NESS = SUCCESS GAIL VAZ-OXLADE

There are loads of books focused on how to be successful. But even after reading a good blog or a good book or hearing an inspiring story, it’s sometimes hard to stay focused. So here is a simple acronym that may help you do just that. PASS. Whether you’re determined to learn to live on less or make more money to get to debt-free forever, you can succeed if you do the following: Plan. Yup, that’s the “P” in PASS. You can’t do anything without a plan. Begin by clearly defining what it is you want to achieve. How will you measure your progress? If what you want isn’t quantifiable, how will you know that you achieved it? And if it doesn’t have a timeframe attached, it’s just a dream, not a plan. You have to be very specific about what you want: I want to pay off my $1,200 credit card

by Christmas this year. I want to have the money to pay for my $3,200 honeymoon before I get married next June. Quantifiable goals can be achieved. Fuzzy goals, not so much.

Make sure your plan is realistic.

Wanting to have $40,000 saved for a down payment on a home in three years when you make only minimum wage may not be doable if you don’t change other things in your life, like your job. And be flexible. There is no rule that says that plans can’t change. If your 24 Renters Guide | Aug. 16–30, 2019

priorities or circumstances change, so should your plan.

Act. That’s the “A” in PASS. The best-laid plans won’t make a bit of difference if you don’t do something. Some people spend so much time putting their plan together they have no energy left to execute it. Or is it that they’re so afraid of failing that they let themselves get stuck in the planning stage?

Let’s take a woman I’ve worked with, we’ll call her Sally, as an example. Sally has wanted to go into business for herself for as long as I’ve known her. She’s got talent.

She’s got a vision. And she’s spent the last five years working on the plan. What Sally doesn’t have is the chutzpah to act. She’s petrified.

Once you’ve got the plan in place, you have to have enough faith in yourself that you can do it.

You must believe in yourself.

I’m a big believer in the fact that people can do just about anything they really want to do. There are lots of folks who say they want one thing and then act against their own best interest. I’m not talking about those kids. I’m talking about the people who have clearly defined what they want and have the ability to make it happen.

Sometimes it takes a lot of stick-to-it-ness to get from here to there. Hey, that’s the first “S” in PASS. If you don’t have the gumption to go the distance, then you won’t. Stick-to-it-ness is what separates the men from the boys, the women from the girls.

It’s the ingredient most lacking when it comes to seeing a plan through to fruition.

People with stick-to-it-ness don’t give up. When things look bleak, they look at their plan to see if there’s a problem. Or they change their timeline. Or they look for more resources to help them.

But they keep on truckin’. And even when the first plan doesn’t work, people with stick-to-it-ness know that the lessons they are learning are going to help them succeed with Plan B. Ultimately, it’s all about success.

Yup, that’s the final “S” in PASS. So the whole thing ends up looking like this: Plan + Action + Stick-toit-ness = Success Is there something you’ve always wanted to do that you just haven’t made happen yet? Come on, fess up!

RENTERS’ INSURANCE? JACKIE MARCHILDON If your apartment building or rental home doesn’t require you to have proof of renters’ insurance, you might hum and haw about having to pay an extra monthly fee and decide it’s not necessary. I’m all for avoiding extra monthly payments – but that renters’ insurance policy might really help you out should you come across a series of unfortunate events.

Your landlord probably has property insurance on your building, but their policy doesn’t likely protect your personal belongings, any of the upgrades you’ve made to your unit, or cover you if someone hurts themselves in your home.

It will cover certain things, but disregard others. Know what’s what when it comes to your landlord’s insurance versus your own.

IF A FIRE BURNS DOWN YOUR BUILDING: Property insurance: Generally speaking, your landlord’s property insurance would pay for the demolition of the building (if necessary), as well as cover the expenses required to repair or rebuild it. This means it would pay to fix the structure itself, as well as any permanent fixtures – lights, built-in cabinetry, etc. Their insurance would not cover your personal belongings.

Versus Renters’ insurance: In most cases, renters’ insurance would cover all

of the contents in your unit in the case of a fire. Most policies would also cover your expenses if you needed a place to live while your home was out of commission.

IF SOMEONE GETS HURT IN YOUR HOME: Property insurance: Chances are,

if you organize a get-together and a party-goer slips on a spill and is hurt in your home, your landlord’s insurance would not be of any help if that person decided to sue you.

Versus Renters’ insurance: If you had liability coverage included in your renters’ insurance, it would protect you financially if you unintentionally caused bodily harm to someone in your home. It would also likely cover you if you accidentally caused damage to the property in which you lived.

IF SOMEONE BREAKS IN AND STEALS YOUR STUFF: Property insurance: As you now

know, the landlord’s property insurance doesn’t extend to the contents of your unit, which means

that without renters’ insurance, you’d be on the hook for replacing everything in this situation.

Versus Renters’ insurance: In most cases, your renters’ insurance policy covers your possessions and personal property if your apartment gets broken into.

Whether you’re renting a basement apartment in a home, a unit in a midrise or one in a massive highrise, insurance is all the same – the property owner insures the structure and property, and the resident insures the contents.

Take a look around your place – how would you feel without everything in your home? Is it all worth paying a small monthly fee to protect?
