When only a new home or condo will do, those in the market will be pleasantly surprised by the exceptional value and attention to detail buying new has to offer. When you buy new, you don’t inherit somebody else’s worn carpeting, personal taste in kitchen appliances or paint colour preferences. You get a fresh, clean space that’s waiting for your personal imprint.

›› Determine which options and upgrades you want as part of your offer and ensure your lender will finance what’s required, if needed; ›› To save money, consider which upgrades you could purchase and install yourself after the sale closes. Some upgrades such as rough-ins and wiring inside the walls are easier to do before construction.

If you’ve always fantasized about buying a brand new home, here are a few tips that can help you make the process a pleasant one:

Factors such as the cost of the home, neighbourhood, lot size and special features play a big role in your final decision. Determining which features your new house absolutely must have, and which features you could live without, should be among your first steps in the home-buying process. We hope you enjoy this issue of New Condo Guide. Let us know what you think. We’d love to hear from you.

›› Shop the mortgage market to see what you can afford before you start your hunt; ›› Obtain a lawyer who is willing to review your offer as well as help you close the home; ›› Don’t be persuaded by high pressure sales tactics while you’re out shopping;

RAINY DAYS AHEAD? Budget for all seasons

DIANE DUFLOT

EDITOR

Wall2Wall Media Diane.Duflot@wall2wallmedia.com Follow me on Twitter at Twitter.com/DianeDuflotW2W

Despite the fact that July was a dry month here in Vancouver (not a drop of rain fell for an entire month, a new record in our city), as a potential home investor now is the time to put plans for that imminent rainy day in the budget. It’s time, in other words, to take a cold, hard look at your finances to determine whether or not you can maintain your current lifestyle while paying off a mortgage. If you’ve already been tracking your expenses in preparation for becoming a homeowner, then you’re off to the right start, if not, then there’s no time like the present to begin. In this issue of New Condo Guide,

Gail Vaz-Oxlade sets you off on the right foot with her tips on laying out a budget in “Are You Financially Fit?” Before you start home shopping, it’s also a good idea to head to the bank or a mortgage broker to get pre-approved for your mortgage. Don’t forget to factor in closing costs, including legal fees and insurance. You’ll also want to make sure that you leave enough money in the bank to enjoy decorating your new condo, but contributor Sara Duck has a DIY project to get you started on sprucing up your space, regardless of your budget. Happy reading home hunters!

188 Keefer Ni Hao: Say “Hello” to Achievable Home Ownership // by Susan M Boyce “This terrace, this is the one I

Can’t you just imagine the view? Eighteen floors up, and it’s got a wrap around balcony. You’ve gotta admit that’s pretty sweet.” The young man is pointing to a section of 188 Keefer’s scale model. His girlfriend, clearly equally enthusiastic, is already busy jotting down some notes on her price list. The couple are just two of the many people checking out the official launch of 188 Keefer’s tower homes. It’s a diverse group: two sisters who can’t wait to share a home they own rather than one they rent, a grandmother entertaining her grandson while his mom checks out the fully integrated Blomberg want.

refrigerator, a 20-something buyer explaining to his dad why Chinatown is such a dynamic neighbourhood and a 50-something couple talking about how great it will be to finally downsize. One thing they all agree on: 188 Keefer is bringing a unique style and perspective to the ’hood. Cool Digs “Is that really standard? I don’t have to pay extra for it?” A woman is staring at the kitchen vignette’s backsplash — a single sheet of glass backpainted with a delicate, contemporary interpretation of cherry blossoms. When sales manager Ben Amzaleg assures her that yes, it’s standard in every tower home, the woman smiles broadly. When he tells her there’s also a hand-painted, glass feature wall in the bathroom, she spontaneously claps her hands with delight. Mind you, she’s about to discover this is just the beginning of a lengthy list of standard features designed to make a statement of good taste and urban sensibility. Engineered hardwood flooring, roller-shade blinds throughout, Miele gas cooktop and hood fan, floor-to-ceiling windows… these homes have it all.

Hot Pricing And while the homes at 188 Keefer have an undeniably funloving, ultra-urban ambiance, they’re also seriously affordable. Tower homes are priced from $284,900 and even the sought-after penthouse homes start at $659,900. Add in 188 Keefer’s innovative “achievable five per cent deposit program,” and it’s no wonder this development has been capturing hearts from day one. “The majority of our podium homes were sold within hours of the launch,” says Alexa Paukkunen, sales and marketing director with Magnum Projects. Still, she notes a good selection of tower and podium floorplans still remain, although they’re selling rapidly. “People see the long-term value and potential in this neighbourhood, and they can’t wait to be part of it. There’s just so much to do and experience here.” Rapidly, she lists off just a few of her favourite local amenities: Science World, the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Classical Gardens, the Seawall, and one of Vancouver’s hottest new restaurants, Bao Bei. “Plus 188 Keefer is going to provide some exceptional, signature views of the Vancouver skyline, North Shore and False Creek. And you can just imagine what the sunsets are going to be like — fabulous.” Inspired Architecture Designed by W.T. Leung and drawing inspiration from the surrounding heritage buildings, 188 Keefer’s architecture is a marriage of history and vision. On the lower levels, precast concrete cornices harken back to the Chinatown of old while tower component will symbolize the sleek, new look of emerging Chinatown with a concrete wall that’s part of a public art installation by Vancouver artist, Ron Terada. Amenities, over 6,000 sq. ft. in total, focus around an expansive, 2,500-sq.-ft. outdoor terrace featuring barbeque area, outdoor dining table, fire pit with seating area, plus garden plots and a children’s play space. Inside there’s a comfortable lounge, full fitness facility

and entertainment kitchen for times when you need just a bit more space to indulge in culinary adventures. Solid Reputation “Westbank is one of Canada’s premier developers,” Alexa says. “They’re known for their progressive outlook, above and beyond quality and commitment to building not just homes, but strong communities. Which all adds up to peace of mind for homeowners who can feel confident their new home will be built to the highest possible standards.” The 188 Keefer information centre is now open right next door at 190 Keefer in the heart of Chinatown. When complete, 188 Keefer will be comprised of a total of 156 spectacular city homes above groundlevel retail. Other Vancouver icons from Westbank include Living Shangri-La Vancouver, Fairmont Pacific Rim, redevelopment of the legendary Woodward’s property and Vancouver’s next icon TELUS Garden now under construction. For more information, visit 188keefer.com or call 604.620.2018.

hen buying presale, it can sometimes be difficult to fully understand the financial commitment at hand, especially when you won’t take possession of your home for up to three years. Carefully establishing what you can afford from a mortgage perspective, as well as considering taxes, maintenance fees and/or any other costs that may be associated with your purchase and ongoing ownership is therefore of the utmost importance. But how do you manage the uncertainty of interest rates that can change at any time? The answer: capped interest rates. These are a helpful resource available on many new construction presale communities that address just this issue.

Know what your rate will be when you complete on your home

Capped interest rates are interest rates that the bank will commit to for a period of time, usually up to 24 or even 36 months. By going through the approval process with the bank, you can “cap” or create a ceiling for your interest rate based on today’s rate for the duration of construction. For example, if you are approved today with a 3.2 per cent interest rate, but interest rates rise over the next three years to make your rate 3.8 per cent at the same terms at completion, having a capped interest rate entitles you to maintain your original rate of 3.2 per cent. This can be particularly helpful when you’re stretching your dollar. As you know, to be approved you must qualify under the five-year posted rates, regardless of the term you select. Getting approved and capping your rate provides you with the peace of mind of knowing you will still qualify under the fiveyear posted rate, even if rates increase. If, on the other hand, you don’t cap your rate and interest rates rise, you risk no longer qualifying for your purchase price. And it gets better! If you decide to cap your rate today and rates stay the same or even decrease, the bank will honour the best rate they can offer at completion. Typically, as completion gets closer, a bank can sharpen their rate and pass it onto you, but with a capped interest rate, you have the peace of mind knowing that your interest cannot go above a certain rate until completion. Many projects will have preferred lenders offering capped interest rates, but be sure to go through the process with the lender. If you don’t go through the steps of being approved early on, then you will not be entitled to a capped interest rate at completion. Ask a project sales representative or speak to your preferred lender to find out what type of capped rate programs they offer.

Canadian Home Builders’ Association of BC appoints

new Chief Executive Officer the Canadian Home Builders’ Association of British Columbia (CHBA BC). Neil Moody has been appointed as the CHBA BC’s new chief executive officer effective August 1, 2013. “After a lengthy recruitment process which brought forth several impressive candidates, we are pleased to welcome Neil as our new CEO,” said CHBA BC President Nathan Stone. “Neil’s strong background in membershipdriven associations will serve British Columbia’s residential construction sector well as we move forward in these challenging but exciting times. His experience working with national governments as well as business organizations will allow us to continue to grow as an industry association.” Moody’s entrepreneurial background will be helpful in understanding and serving the needs of CHBA BC’s members. He began his first successful manufacturing business at age 18 and later served as a builder and subcontractor of single-family homes in White Rock. Moody’s most recent position as a real estate investment and renovation consultant with links to the Asia Pacific and Japan came on the heels of spending 14 years as executive director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Japan. Moody was also the chair of the Foreign Chambers of Commerce in Japan and initiated the formation of the Canadian Chambers of Commerce and Business Associations in Asia, a membership network representing more than 3,000 members. “This is an exciting time to take on a leadership position within the residential construction industry, which is one of the most important drivers of the province’s economy,” said Moody. “There are several indications that we’re entering a period of positive growth and employment, but we’re also likely on the cusp of rising interest rates. The way these and other factors play out over the coming months will present many opportunities as well as challenges.” There are several consumer-driven trends emerging within the residential construction sector, including the A new leader is set to take the helm at

Moody takes over from M.J. Whitemarsh, who led the association for over 13 years. “I’m pleased to be working with Neil during the current transition period,” said Whitemarsh. “As a consensus-seeking team builder with political acumen and business expertise, he will provide strong direction for the industry as it deals with issues such as the release of marginal lands from the Agricultural Land Reserve and Industrial Land Reserve, both of which could play a key factor in housing affordability.” The Canadian Home Builders’ Association is the voice of the residential construction industry in Canada, representing more than 8,500 member firms across the country, including more than 1,870 members with CHBA BC. The association’s members include new home builders, renovators, developers, trade contractors, building material manufacturers and suppliers, lenders and other professionals in the housing sector. QUICK TIPS

If you don’t use it,

// BY HELLEN BUTTIGIEG

IT’S TIME TO LOSE IT (I haven’t made the leap to e-readers yet — lots of resistance there!) I often get questions about what to do with books that are no longer used and are taking up space. Donate books in good condition to your local library (where you can visit them), hospitals or schools. There is even a great program that sends books to troops: Books for Soldiers at BooksForSoldiers.com. Toy toss Put aside time with the kids to go through their old toys and decide what they

want to donate. Remind them they need to make space if they want new toys. Drive to the charity together and drop off the toys. Remind the kids how kind and giving their gesture was and that other less fortunate children will truly appreciate their donation. It’s never too early to start teaching children this valuable practice.

Clean out your storage If your storage space is cluttered, it’s a good time to

tackle it. Empty it out. Create a pile for things you no longer need or want. Don’t forget to take the discarded items to the dump if they cannot be sold or donated, and enjoy the satisfaction that comes from being able to find your belongings, even if they are tucked away!

Have you been putting off donating? Have you been storing items for years with the

here are many charities that will take things you no longer need so don’t hold onto items just because you have them. If they’re of no use to you it’s time they stopped taking up your space and moved on to a home where they’re needed. Hold a garage sale if you have the time. The money you earn can go towards new purchases once you’ve carved out some space!

Has your clutter expired? If you can’t quite bring yourself to let go of certain items, even though you aren’t using them, consider packing them in a box and writing a ‘best before’ date on it six months away. Put this date on your calendar as a reminder. If you don’t go into that box again before the expiry date, donate it to charity without opening it again. This provides you with a cooling-off period, making it easier to detach.

GET A JUMP-START ON DE-CLUTTERING

Out with the old, in with the new Is your outdated home office equipment slowing you

Books collecting dust? Although I keep a

collection of books that I often re-read or refer back to, I make it a habit of using the one-in/one-out rule. I love books and my house would be overrun with them if I didn’t begin this habit a long time ago. Any time I’m tempted to buy a new book, I remind myself that if I do, I will have to let one go. This encourages me to borrow books from the library when possible.

intention of donating to charity, but never get around to it? Pull out your calendar today and book a definite date to do this. Blocking the time now increases the likelihood of following through with it later.

down? Maybe it’s time to upgrade or replace it. Or, have you replaced your equipment but kept the old laptop or printer ‘just in case?’ Take back your space and give your office a fresh start by letting go of the old. Do this and I predict your productivity will increase in the years ahead!

Having trouble deciding? Clutter is the result of postponed decisions. When you are de-cluttering, make the keep/toss/donate decisions easier by asking yourself whether the item serves a purpose or adds beauty or meaning to your life. Getting organized is not about getting rid of all your stuff, it’s about honouring what truly serves you and letting go of what’s just taking up space. If you don’t love it or use it, it’s time to lose it.

HOWEVER YOU DEFINE COMMUNITY, WE CALL IT AN EASY WAY TO MEET AND CONNECT WITH YOUR NEIGHBOURS. It’s just one of the many reasons residents love calling Morgan Crossing home. It could be at the chalk art festival on Main Street (see below!), or one of the many other events, like movie nights in the summer or resident parties. How about chatting with fellow dog owners at the Morgan Crossing Dog Park, or meeting during a class or workout at Steve Nash Sports Club. Or just hanging out at the coffee shops and restaurants, at a wine tasting at Everything Wine, or on a bench on Main Street. You’ll see and meet lots of the people who live and work at Morgan Crossing… and maybe even ask out your cute neighbour, Amy. Because loving where you live should be about more than just loving your stunning condo (though we have lots of those too!).

ometimes life’s best decisions begin with a random stroke of serendipity. Certainly when Esther and Cagri priority registered for Glasshouse Lofts in New Westminster’s Port Royal neighbourhood, it was mainly a spontaneous reaction to a direct mail advertisement. The following day, however, they happened upon a CTV news clip showing Mayor Wayne Wright at the project’s official groundbreaking ceremony. Their curiosity now piqued, the couple decided it was time to check out Glasshouse Lofts for themselves. “We walked into the showhome, and got such a good feeling,” Cagri says. “We looked at each other and just said: okay, this is it.” Unique Personality Although the couple had been looking casually at local real estate, Cagri admits they certainly weren’t in a rush to buy property. “So many of the developments we saw felt like IKEA — everything was the same, boxy design. Glasshouse Lofts is completely unique, and you can really feel the quality. Sure, the builder could probably have saved some money by doing what everyone else is doing, but they took a different approach and it shows.” The open, loft-style floorplans also immediately resonated with the couple’s European background. “Having the kitchen open to the living room is a very beautiful, very European concept,” Esther says, adding they loved the loft home they and their three children shared before immigrating to Canada. “When you’re cooking, you want to be part of everything — not hidden away in another room.”

And they’re definitely in agreement when it comes to what’s getting unpacked first — their kitchen gear. “We’re both into cooking, and these kitchens are amazing,” Esther says with a contagious enthusiasm. “GE Monogram appliances, a beautiful fridge, oven and microwave on the wall — I can’t wait.” Neighbourhood Ambiance While the couple is planning to live in their three-bedroom home at Glasshouse Lofts for a long time, Cagri is excited that the possibility of a bridge or water taxi connecting directly to the New Westminster Quay could equate to a significant increase in property values over time. “Port Royal is like a little town all on its own — very private, very quiet,” he says. “We made a strategic choice to buy a corner, park-facing home on the ground level so it’s easy for our kids to connect to the outdoors. And, of course, the boardwalk along the Fraser River is right there as well. It’s going to be breathtaking.” For more information about Glasshouse Lofts and the Port Royal community, visit aragon.ca or call 604.520.9890. august 9 - 23, 2013 metro vancouver new Condo Guide 43

P

eople spend a lot of time worrying about what they eat, how much they weigh and how healthy their hearts are. According to Statistics Canada, life expectancy rose by almost 2 1/2 years for men and by almost 1 1/2 years for women between 1986 and 1996. But while we are all now living longer and healthier lives, for many people, financial fitness still isn’t a reality. Only 30 per cent of Canadians follow a monthly budget {1} while just 40 per cent of us have a formal financial plan in place {2}. Yikes! The fallout of all this inactivity (is it inattention or procrastination?) is that the realities of Canadians’ lives are a long way off their expectations. A CIBC Financial Health Poll conducted by COMPAS Inc., showed that 37 per cent of those who retired and then returned to work did so because they didn’t have enough money. What

Most people are financially flabby. How fit are you?

would they have done differently if they could do it all over? Well, 60 per cent say that in hindsight they would have started investing earlier and they would have saved more. Hmmm. More than just having enough money, our level of financial fitness reflects our ability to bring our current and future needs into balance. To have a balanced financial plan, you must set some realistic goals. Just as most athletes have specific goals towards which they consistently work, the key to financial fitness is to set achievable goals and consistently work towards them. What weighs most heavily on your mind? Very likely there will be several issues competing for your limited financial resources. Do you want to accumulate a specific amount of money, eliminate your mortgage or pay off that new car? Weighing each of your goals against the others will help you to see which are the most important ones. There are no right or wrong answers at this point. Right now, you’re just laying out the plan. Later, if you want to double-check it, you can ask your financial adviser to look it over and see what’s missing. Okay, it’s time to pick up a pen and get to work.

›› Make a list of everything you want to achieve ›› Make sure you’ve covered each of the seven areas of a financial plan ›› Prioritize your list ›› Pick two goals ›› Make sure your goals are realistic ›› Set some dates ›› Write it all down ›› Check your progress every six months

Having decided where you want to be, you need to determine where you are now so you can size up the gap. Complete a net worth statement to see just how balanced your finances are and update this statement annually. It is your scorecard of how much your efforts are paying off. Next, do a budget so you can see exactly where your money goes each month. Estimate how much you spend monthly, track your expenses for about three months, and revise your budget to reflect your actual expenditures. Don’t cop out and say, “Well I had unusually high expenses this month because...” Emergencies always crop up, and part of being financially fit is having a plan for dealing with those nasty little surprises. Now look at your income relative to your expenses. If your expenses seem too high, you can either cut back on what you’re spending or increase your income.

›› Consider a part-time job to boost your earnings on a short-term basis ›› Consolidate bank accounts to save on fees ›› Brown-bag it for a few months to trim your waistline and your budget ›› Share newspapers, magazines and books with friends and co-workers

8/1/13 3:03:50 PM

›› You’ve written your financial goals down in order of priority, completed a net worth statement and set up a budget — now have to decide how to meet your goals. Let’s say you plan to start an investment program. You want to save $25,000 over the next five years. If you’re looking at your budget and thinking, “There’s just no way!” maybe you need to adjust your time frame. Or perhaps you need to look at how you’re investing your savings. One rule of investing is the longer you have to reach your goal, and the more your money earns during that time, the less you have to set aside each year. If you haven’t already done so, establishing an emergency fund for large, unforeseen expenses or temporary job loss should be a priority. Ideally, your emergency fund should be able to support you for three to six months. If someone in your household shares the expenses, consider how long it would take him or her to find another job. Check over your accounts and make sure you’re getting the most for the least. There’s no point in paying for services that you’ll use only once in a blue moon. Little things like choosing a passbook option rather than receiving a statement can save you money. If you can reduce or eliminate your fees by maintaining a specific minimum balance, consider consolidating your accounts to reduce your costs. If maintaining a monthly balance is a problem, then you’ll have to compare individual service charges to choose the least expensive account for your purposes. Attracted to the “packaged” accounts? Take the time to compare the individual fees with the package costs to see if you come out ahead. The idea is to pay for only the services you’ll use. Now it’s time to look at your debt. Begin by eliminating credit card balances and consumer loans. Often people pay only the minimum required without realizing how much interest costs work against their overall plan. If you have several cards with high balances, consider a consolidation loan to reduce your interest costs. Does your card charge a high rate of interest? Transfer your balance to lower cost card. If you have only a small amount to work off, put your cards away until the debt is cleared. Once you’re debt free, by all means take advantage of the convenience credit cards offer, but keep tight control of them and pay your balance off in full every month. Prepare for the risks of everyday life. The risks we seem to deal with quite easily are property insurance, car insurance and contents insurance. The risks we tend to overlook are those associated with our economic earning power. If you or your partner were to die or become ill or disabled and unable to work, would your family have the resources to meet their day-to-day needs? It’s a tough question to face, but the consequences of not facing it can be even tougher on your family. ›› Life insurance will protect your family’s standard of living if you die. ›› Disability insurance will provide you with an income if you cannot work due to illness or injury. ›› Critical illness insurance will pay you a lump sum if you are diagnosed with a specific illness. ›› Long-term care insurance will pay the bills should you (or other members of your family) need in-home or facility care. Don’t forget to do some retirement planning. The only one you can count on is YOU. Through means testing of pension and age tax credits, and reduction in senior’s benefits, the government is saying loudly and clearly “You are responsible for providing for yourself.” Thankfully, we still have Registered Retirement Savings Plans. Any money contributed to an RRSP remains tax-deferred until the funds are withdrawn. And since investments held in RRSPs also grow on a tax-deferred basis,

they grow much more quickly than investments held outside an RRSP. Despite the fact that almost everyone should have a will and a power of attorney, many people don’t. Some think their wishes will be carried out by a family member or that they do not have enough money to justify the cost of making a will. Others avoid making a will because their personal circumstances — marriages, divorces, and accumulated children and stepchildren — just seem too complex to unravel. However, if you die without a will, trying to figure out who gets what, and when, can be a mess. And your estate may end up paying more in fees and taxes than it should, leaving less for your loved ones. Partnered? Have your wills drawn up together so that they reflect an integrated estate plan. Review and update your will every three or four years, especially when family circumstances change (weddings, divorces, births, and deaths all result in changes in family structure), your financial circumstances change, new legislation is implemented or you change your province or country of residence. Financial fitness isn’t achieved overnight. It takes time, a sound plan, a strong commitment and, perhaps, a financial coach. If you are serious about taking control of your finances and about your independence, you too can become financially fit. Believe in yourself and in your own ability to take charge. Then just do it! See you in the winner’s circle. august 9 - 23, 2013 metro vancouver new Condo Guide 45

PC Insurance Poll:

Canadians throw caution to the wind With vacation season in full swing,

a new national poll conducted by Leger for PC Insurance that was released today reveals that many Canadians fail to take basic precautions to safeguard their homes and property. With the widespread adoption of social media, more than four in 10 (41 per cent) respondents admitted to openly sharing their vacation details on social media sites, making their plans to be away from home available to anyone and everyone.

Meanwhile, nearly four in 10 Canadians said that they do not always have a family member, friend or neighbour check on their dwelling while they are away. And 14 per cent of respondents admitted they do not always lock the doors of their homes. Not surprisingly, those who live in urban or suburban areas are more likely to always lock their premises than those who live in rural or remote regions (89 per cent versus 77 per cent). While more than half of respondents (54 per cent) viewed insurance in general as a “must have” or something that provides “peace of mind,” a significant number do not fully understand the difference between using an insurance broker and relying on carriers that sell their own products. Despite the fact that 78 per cent of respondents said they

Not surprisingly, those who live in urban or suburban areas are more likely to always lock their premises than those who live in rural or remote regions (89 per cent versus 77 per cent). worry about their insurance rates going up, 73 per cent trust their current insurance provider to give them the best coverage — and 21 per cent see no difference whatsoever between an insurance agent and an insurance broker. “While 89 per cent of Canadians have insurance on their homes, many do things that leave them potentially vulnerable, possibly even uninsured,” said Maria Forlini, senior vice president of President’s Choice Services Inc. “A surprising number do not realize that brokers, like PC Insurance, can act in the interests of clients, shop for the right products at the right price, and even provide completely confidential advice and claims counselling, when required.” Other interesting findings from the PC Insurance survey include:

» Th ose with home insurance are more likely to always have

someone check on their residence while they are away than those without (65 per cent versus 31 per cent); »1 5 per cent of Canadians admitted they do not always keep their front walkways clear to help prevent trips, slips and falls; »8 2 per cent of those with home insurance said they always keep their walkways clear compared with only 61 per cent without home insurance; »M en are more likely than women to disagree that their current insurance provider will offer the best coverage; »A lmost a quarter of Canadians (24 per cent) said that they have been in an automobile accident but settled with the other driver without notifying their insurer: 13 per cent because the damage was minor, and 10 per cent because they did not want their rates to increase.

The poll also asked Canadians what drivers should do if they ding another car in a parking lot. Nearly a quarter of

respondents (23 per cent) said they should wait for the other driver to return; 72 per cent said they should leave a note with their information; and only one per cent said they should do nothing and just drive away. Interestingly, though, we are not always as honest as we expect others to be. Sixteen per cent of Canadians with car insurance acknowledged they had dinged another car in a parking lot, and 20 per cent of those who did said they simply drove away without leaving any information. “When it comes to insurance, there seems to be a ‘disconnect’ between what people think and what people do,” said noted award winning writer, Kathy Buckworth, Chief Family Advisor for President’s Choice Services. “Sometimes, insurance just seems complex and people are afraid that if they make a claim their rates might go up. Getting advice on what may and may not be covered can help you and your family make the right decision. By talking to a broker, such as PC Insurance, you can make decision-making simpler.” For details on PC Insurance or to get a quote, please visit: www.pcinsurance.ca
