enting an apartment over owning a home makes lots of financial sense for people in many different life situations. Maybe you just can’t afford to buy a home or don’t want to spend your hard-earned money on one. Maybe you have a plan to buy a home in a few years, and want to start saving for a down payment. Or maybe you’re simply not interested in the cost and commitment that comes with being a homeowner. No matter why you’re renting an apartment, you need to know your rights as a tenant. As part of the renting process, your landlord must give you a copy of the agreement after you sign and return it. Since this document outlines all the terms you’ve agreed to, it’s an important document to have on hand. You should avoid breaking a lease if at all possible. Each lease agreement has its own penalties for not honouring the outlined terms. Be sure to check your lease to make sure you can handle the financial ramifications that come with breaking a lease — before you break it.

‘m that person – I love ringing in the new year. I admit it, I especially love the countdown – everything stops for that ten second count. It’s the end, and then it’s the beginning. I’ve always put a lot of stock into it, and that first second of that first day is transformative. Not everyone feels the way I do, but at least my friends and family indulge me! Every year I look forward to letting go of the past and making decisions for the new. I think it’s good to have a point – however symbolic – that allows you to step back and take a pause. Decide what comes with on the next part of your journey, and what will purposely be left behind. It doesn’t need to be the new year. In fact, it doesn’t need to be a set date, but it is a good idea to take the time to have a good long look at life and make decisions, consider change, take account of what you want and how to make it happen. One of the things I always reflect on is my home. Have I been storing things – holding onto possessions, clutter, the past – unnecessarily, or is it all still part of my life? Have I outgrown my space or has it outgrown me. Do I need to plan for a change: Storage? Decor? Organization? Relocation? I moved a lot more when I was younger – a new city, different roommates, cohabitating, growing my family. Not that I’d start looking at rental ads on January 1, but I’d identify it, put it in my plan for the new year. I’m not a ‘New Year’s Resolution’ person, but I guess you could call me a ‘New Year’s Organization’ person. I invite you to join me – think about all the things you’d like to leave behind in 2013 and all the new you’d like for 2014. If you’re ready for a move in 2014, we’re here to help. HUNDREDS OF HOUSING ADVOCATES, SOCIAL housing residents and elected officials travelled by bus from Toronto to Ottawa on November 21st to urge the federal government to invest more money for social housing. They gathered on Parliament Hill as part of the Close the Housing Gap campaign, which seeks to persuade the federal and provincial governments to continue funding social housing at existing levels and provide new, long-term funding for social housing capital repairs. Bus shelter posters appeared in both Toronto and Ottawa earlier this fall and the list of endorsers continues to grow. The campaign is a joint effort of the City of Toronto and Toronto Community Housing and involves residents as well as politicians and stakeholders. It is co-chaired by City Councillor Ana Bailão (Ward 18 Davenport) and Toronto Community Housing Chair Bud Purves.

“Torontonians are sending a strong message that they expect the federal and provincial governments to step up, not step back, when it comes to investing in social housing,” said Councillor Bailão. “We have delivered a strong message to Ottawa and Queen’s Park and will continue to do so as the campaign enters a new phase in 2014.” Toronto Community Housing is facing a tidal wave of repairs over the next 10 years. Many of its buildings are now 40 or 50 years old, and $2.6 billion in capital repairs are needed over the next decade to continue providing residents with safe, reliable homes.

n the 19th century, life was simpler: people enjoyed eating together, sharing music and going for walks and enjoying the sentimental feelings associated with the season. It was also the time when many holiday traditions began. Santa Claus, then called St. Nicholas, made his first appearance in 1822. The first Christmas card appeared in 1843 and by the 1860s people in Toronto had come to see Christmas as a special time to be spent with family and close friends. Black Creek Pioneer Village brings that world to life again with a rich program of holiday activities for a new generation of Canadians with unique holiday workshops, special weekend programming, a gingerbread village, Santa’s Cottage and Christmas by Lamplight. During the holidays, the Village is dressed up in its seasonal best. The decorations make extensive use of natural materials, such as evergreens and dried fruits and flowers grown right in the Village. Each heritage home reflects how different families would have celebrated Christmas in the 1860s. Guided walks on the weekends, such as the “Tour of Christmas Traditions,” provide a glimpse into the customs that underlie our modern-day celebrations, and give visitors a chance to chat with historical interpreters in the Village. Other popular activities include creating a Christmas card and “Christmas Feasts & Flaming Puddings” presentations where visitors can experience these culinary delights for themselves. Every year Black Creek Pioneer Village celebrates the season with its signature “Christmas by Lamplight” event. A new six-acre park is under construction.
