he end of November rolls around and then it’s a holiday marathon that doesn’t stop until we reach the finish line on January 1. Do you realize the convenience that apartment living offers over the holidays? I don’t want to hear that your apartment is small, you can’t have many people over. Au contraire. I’ve always had the home that was the holiday destination. Whether for a feast or a fête, there’s never been a lack of room – it just takes some planning. I’ve moved the furniture out of the way and rented a big table and extra chairs. Doesn’t that seem the logical thing to do for the once-a-year you need seating for 15, instead of having a dedicated dining room you rarely use? I’ve been lucky enough to live in buildings where there are party rooms. I book my dates months in advance. I’ve never had a guest list too large for the party room – and it saves me the deep clean of my own place before guests arrive. Many party rooms have upscale features like a fireplace, piano, catering kitchen and bar – even a sound system for dancing. When I go to parties at the apartments of family and friends, I always check if there’s a guest suite I can rent. They’re often available at a nominal fee. It’s so much more convenient and comfortable than a late night cab ride. Guest suites come to be like mini-vacations, especially if you’re visiting friends and family who live some distance away. I wouldn’t want to impose on my host further, so it’s an ideal solution! Apartment entertaining is also fabulous because there are no worries about parking, no last minute driveway to shovel, and most apartments are convenient to public transit so there’s no excuse for guests who don’t drive. Peel Children’s Aid Foundation (PCAF) would like you to consider sharing those blessings with less fortunate families in your community as their annual Holiday Wishes drive gets underway. The organization makes holiday wishes come true for 500 families (selected by PCAF social workers based on proven need) that otherwise wouldn’t be able to provide their family any sort of holiday – no presents, no festivities, no big family meal. Through Holiday Wishes, PCAF ensures each child up to 12 will receive some great gifts, and children between 13 to 16 will receive $50 gift cards (because teens are so hard to shop for these days!). They also ensure each family gets enough grocery gift cards to cover a delicious holiday meal. This allows each family to shop for the food that suits their own personal family traditions and accommodates any food/dietary restrictions members of their family may have. “That’s what we want to give to families involved with the agency,”says Executive Director Catherine Hinton,“to make that day special.” She describes those memories from childhood days – eager anticipation, plenty of food, playing with the cousins, holiday happiness that creates lifelong memories. Holiday Wishes helps make these memories for families whose finances can’t possibly make it happen. The program is 100 per cent funded by the community – there is no government funding for Holiday Wishes, so the generosity of the community is very important. If you’d like to get involved, there are four ways to give:

But thoughtful packing of seasonal decorations and materials at the end of the holidays for the next year, can keep the fun in what is for some, a stressful time. In other words, it pays to plan, even 12 months ahead. Careful packing and organization prevents damage and breakage, and ensures you can find everything next year. It is worth taking the extra time to organize and preserve your decorations for next year. eople spend months planning their weddings: from what they’ll wear, to what they’ll eat and whom they’ll invite. It’s fun planning a party. Well, actually, sometimes it’s a pain. His mom and your mom don’t get on. Or his dad’s remarried and his mom’s still spitting mad, and you’re wondering if 45 feet is long enough for the head table. We work hard to juggle the people in our lives to make sure there’s no conflict on our glorious day. But what about the day after? And what if the potential conflict is with the person we’ve just sworn to love for the rest of our lives?

We’re talking bank accounts here, not your favorite chair or that ratty tee-shirt you insist on wearing to bed. This is a black-and-white, dollars-and-sense decision. The reality is that neither of your accounts may suit your needs any more. After all, if your branch isn’t close by and you have to use some other bank’s ATM, you could rack up tons of fees. And if your bank charges fees for everything – there are alternatives out there that don’t – it’s time to go shopping. And don’t automatically default to the big-name banks. Lots of options exist today, from credit unions to trust companies, from companies with virtually no branches to banks in supermarkets. It’s easy to decide who offers the best savings account. It’s the guy who is willing to pay you the most money with the least number of conditions. Look for accounts that pay interest on your lowest balance. And make sure you have access to your money through an ATM network without having to pay an arm and a leg in fees. (Listen, some fee is reasonable. I tell people to budget about $20 a month for all their banking fees. If you can do it for less, you’re a star!) If the best savings account pays the most interest, then the best chequing account gives you unlimited access to TheRentersGuide.ca your money at no charge, right? Look for unlimited free transactions, regardless of your balance whether you bank in person, by telephone or Internet.

Here are some things to watch for so you’re fees don’t go through the roof: The number of transactions you make: Some accounts let you do as many transactions as you like for a fixed monthly fee. Other accounts limit how many transactions you can make for the fee you pay. And some charge you no fixed monthly fee at all, but ding you on every single transaction you make. Figure out how often you need to go to the bank machine (why you’d have to go more than once a week is beyond me) and then pick the account that works for you. Use the cheapest method of banking: You usually pay less if you use a bank machine, telephone bank or bank online instead of dealing with a warm body. Use the record-keeping option that works best for you: If you want to get your cancelled cheques back every month, you will likely pay a fee. Keep the minimum account balance needed to bank for free or for cheap: Some accounts offer lower fees if you keep a certain amount of money in your account at all times. never bounce cheques. You will pay a whopping fee if you make a payment from your account and there is not enough money to cover it.

Banks like to sell overdraft (OD) protection as a way to avoid this. OD works like a loan, but you only pay when you borrow money to cover a payment or withdrawal on your account, and the interest rate and fees are usually really high, which is why I think OD is just a stupid. Instead of using OD, set up a minimum you always leave in your account (just pretend it’s not even there) and stay in the black. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada has a tool you can use to help you decide on which account will suite you best. Make sure you click on View all Packages so you get the full list of what’s available to you. I know all those auto-deposits and withdrawals are a pain in the neck to change. But you’re starting a new life together and the sooner you sort out the details the happier you’ll be in the long run. Get off your duff and get organized together.

“Certified rental building program” in Barrie The Federation of Rental-housing Providers of Ontario (FRPO) recently launched its Certified Rental Building Program (CRBP) in Barrie, Ontario, at Melchior Management’s Barrie Anne Gardens apartment community - 259 Dunlop Street West. This residential rental-housing initiative is the first quality-assurance program of its kind in North America, designed specifically for tenants (consumers). Since the Program’s inaugural launch, FRPO’s members have enrolled over 105,000 suites, in 1,450+ buildings across Ontario. At the end of October, 2013, over 974 multi-residential apartment buildings have received official “certification status” across Ontario.

NIGELLA’S CHOCOLATE CHERRY TRIFLE

DIRECTIONS

Slice the chocolate pound cake into thick pieces and spread generously with cherry jam, rather like making big jam sandwiches, and layer in the bottom of a large, wide trifle bowl, squishing the cake down. Then pour over the cherry brandy so that the cake soaks it up — trifle should be boozy! Top with all of the drained cherries, being sure to push some against the side of the bowl, because that’s what you’ll see when the trifle is served. Cover with cling wrap and leave to macerate while you make the custard. Melt 4 ounces of chocolate in a saucepan, over medium-low. Once the chocolate is melted, set aside while you get on with the custard. In a saucepan warm the milk and cream. Whisk the egg yolks, sugar, and cocoa in a large bowl. Pour the warm milk and cream into the bowl whisking it into the yolks and sugar mixture. Stir in the melted chocolate, scraping the sides well with a rubber spatula to get all of it in, and pour the custard back into the rinsed saucepan.

I made this glorious ‘pud’ for a recent dinner party, and was given a thumping endorsement by all. Nigella suggests cheating and buying some chocolate cake and then tweaking it to make it your own. “I’m all for making life easier, and what makes my life easier when I have a crowd coming for supper, is to buy something and then make it even better. Once liquor and fruits are added, no one will tell the difference!” This is truly heaven in a bowl. INGREDIENTS Serves 16 › 2 chocolate pound cakes, about 12 oz each

› 1 1/3 cups heavy cream plus 1 tablespoon

› 1 cup black cherry jam

› 8 egg yolks

› 4 cups drained sour cherries

› 1/3 cup cocoa powder

Custard: › 4 oz bittersweet chocolate (at least 70 per cent cocoa), chopped

Topping: › 3 cups whipping cream

› 1 oz bittersweet chocolate grated

Cook over a medium heat until the custard thickens, stirring all the time. Make sure it doesn’t boil, as it will split and curdle. The custard will get darker as it cooks and the flecks of chocolate will melt once the custard has thickened. And you do need this thick, so don’t panic so much that you stop cooking while it is still runny.

Admittedly, it continues to thicken as it cools and also when it’s chilling in the refrigerator. Once it is ready, pour into a bowl to cool and cover the top of the custard with cling wrap to prevent a skin from forming. When the custard is cold, pour and spread it over the chocolate cake layer in the trifle bowl, and leave in the refrigerator to set, covered in cling wrap overnight. (If you’ve saved half the cherries, top the custard with them at this point). When you are ready to decorate, softly whip the cream for the topping and spread it gently over the layer of custard, and grate some good quality chocolate over top, and serve. This full-sensory tour offers beer lovers the chance to meet The Good Beer Folks, hear the story of the brewery’s founding, taste beer fresh from the bottling line, all the while learning how all natural ingredients and centuriesold traditions combine to make this award-winning Pilsner. Since the brewery opened its doors in 2000, brewery tours have been offered daily, sharing the story of the brewery’s founding and the rail history of the building they occupy, the CP Rail John St. Roundhouse, a Canadian National Historic Site. Visitors are greeted by friendly and knowledgeable staff offering complimentary samples of Steam Whistle Pilsner, this year’s gold winner at the Canadian Brewing Awards. The half hour tour moves on catwalks above the operations.
