THE AREA Forest Hill, as the name suggests, is a forest on top of a hill, at the high point of Avenue Road. Casa Loma and the Spadina Museum, just outside of Forest Hill mark the entrance into the area from the south, immediately establishing the splendor that you find along Spadina Road, north past the massive Sir Winston

Forest Hill follows the paths of Forest Hill and Old Forest Hill Road, roughly around Oriole Parkway to the east, just above Eglinton Avenue to the north, just beyond St. Clair Avenue to the south and Bathurst to the west. Unique architecture, full-grown trees that arch over the winding streets, quaint parkettes, little bridges over streams, intersections marked with red brick walking paths – these traits are indicative of the luxe exhibited in Forest Hill. SHOPPING Forest Hill Village, the go-to for neighbourhood shopping, is akin to living in a small and exclusive village. Its private nature is due to the fact that no major streets run through the area and is generally accessed by residents in the immediate neighbourhood. The local flavour is preserved because it’s not really considered a tourist or shopper’s destination. Fruit market, ice cream parlour, kitchenware, spa, florist, cafés with patios, restaurants and banks are found within a couple hundred metres of the main intersection of Spadina and Lonsdale. The main Forest Hill grocery, which includes a pharmacy and dry cleaners is located on St. Clair West, south of Forest Hill. The shopping district of Eglinton West Village between Allen Road and Avenue TheRentersGuide.ca Road, however, is a major shopping destination. Here, you can find some of the best international cuisine in the

finest restaurants in the city. At the end of Eglinton West Village, you can literally be transported to the rest of the city either by subway at Eglinton West Station or by car north on the Allen Road Expressway to Highway 401. RECREATION It is no wonder that Forest Hillers are quite active, as the area’s lush environment provides for an array of outdoor activities. Suydam Park is located just south of the heart of Forest Hill Village. A dense, tree-lined park with beautiful walking paths, it is located at Spadina Road at Strathearn Boulevard. Forest Hill Branch Public Library is located on Eglinton Avenue West while you can exercise or play sports in the immense large green spaces of two of Canada’s most prestigious high schools - Upper Canada College for boys and Bishop Strachan for girls. LIVING HERE Forest Hill has a great selection of rental communities, many lovely low- and mid-rise buildings offering charm and architectural period detailing as well as many modern buildings, including two that have just been completed and are now starting to be rented. While upscale and in line with the neighbourhood element of exclusivity, there are a great selection of sizes and styles which will appeal to all, from families to urban professionals, from large and elegant to intimate pied-à-terres.

ork Region is a great place to live with many amenities and a lot of greenspace. For many, however, it is becoming more difficult to afford to live here.

Over 10 years, median house prices have increased by 87 per cent while the median hourly wage rose by only 26 per cent. Even those with aboveaverage incomes can find it hard to manage $700k for the average single, detached home. Anyone wishing to rent rather than buy will have difficulties as well. Currently, the region has one of the lowest rental vacancy rates in the GTA because we have had essentially no new private rental housing built in the last decade. Our vacancy rate hovers around one per cent, compared to the three per cent target that experts say is healthy. We must find a solution for our residents, particularly new graduates, newcomers and seniors. New grads need rentals Many new grads start their careers with a contract or temporary position. Renting can be an affordable housing option and allows them to remain mobile so they can accept a job wherever they may find one. With few rentals available, new grads and young professionals must either TheRentersGuide.ca commute north from Toronto or continue to live with their parents. Newcomers need rentals Recent immigrants represent a growing segment of our population. TheRentersGuide.ca

Many people, including newcomers, like to rent in an area before they buy to make sure that it is the right community for them. Seniors need rentals York Regionâ€™s aging population is forecasted to increase so the need for rental housing will grow too. Some seniors will downsize as upkeep of their larger homes becomes increasingly difficult or simply undesired. What is available for them so they can stay in their communities? Other seniors may struggle on fixed incomes. Although some housing supports are available, there are many seniors who are not able to find rentals that fit their needs and keep them close to family and friends. The impacts of commuting The lack of choice has also resulted in one of the lowest live-work ratios in the GTA, at 53 per cent. This means that about half of the jobs in York Region are filled by people living outside the region and about half of the regionâ€™s workforce travels beyond our boundaries every day. Peel Children’s Aid Foundation (PCAF) would like you to consider sharing those blessings with less fortunate families in your community as their annual Holiday Wishes drive gets underway. The organization makes holiday wishes come true for 500 families (selected by PCAF social workers based on proven need) that otherwise wouldn’t be able to provide their family any sort of holiday – no presents, no festivities, no big family meal. Through Holiday Wishes, PCAF ensures each child up to 12 will receive some great gifts, and children between 13 to 16 will receive $50 gift cards (because teens are so hard to shop for these days!). They also ensure each family gets enough grocery gift cards to cover a delicious holiday meal. This allows each family to shop for the food that suits their own personal family traditions and accommodates any food/dietary restrictions members of their family may have. “That’s what we want to give to families involved with the agency,”says Executive Director Catherine Hinton,“to make that day special.” She describes those memories from childhood days – eager anticipation, plenty of food, playing with the cousins, holiday happiness that creates lifelong memories. Holiday Wishes helps make these memories for families whose finances can’t possibly make it happen. The program is 100 per cent funded by the community – there is no government funding for Holiday Wishes, so the generosity of the community is very important. If you’d like to get involved, there are four ways to give:

This holiday season is a perfect time to share some of that joy around to others.

oving is never easy, it takes a lot of energy and planning to pack up a household, transport it and then set it all up again. From booking the right people and coordinating the timing to finding everything you need, it can be stressful. I recommend the following 15-point checklist to help you complete your move in a stress free way:

Double-check all closets, drawers and shelves, in addition to the attic, garage and any storage spaces to ensure they are empty.

Carry important documents, money and jewelry with you. Pack toys, games or special items for the kids to keep them busy during the move.

Remember to pack a box of basics that you may need on move-in day (tools, paper products, all-purpose household cleaners, etc.). Be sure to have it loaded last so that it will be first off at your new home.

Donâ€™t pack paint, bottles of bleach, gas cans or other flammables. It is against federal law for movers to transport flammable and combustible materials.

Use strong boxes and containers that can be secured tightly. Purchase special boxes for dishes, wardrobes and other special items.

Pack audio-video equipment in their original boxes. Label cables and tighten transit screws. Before removing cables, take pictures of the back of the unit so you can hook everything back up the same way. If removing screws, tape them to the objects they are removed from.

Avoid loading more than 50 pounds into one box.

Pack books tightly on end in small boxes. If they are musty smelling, sprinkle talcum powder between the pages and wrap the books before packing. Leave them stored for a couple of months to eliminate the smell.

Have rugs and draperies cleaned before moving and leave them in wrappings for the move.

Pack medicines in a plastic re-sealable zipper storage bag or leak-proof container.

Check the weather forecast for your move day. If itâ€™s going to be hot, be sure to have a cooler with lots of bottled water and sports drinks on ice.

Call your moving company the day before your move to get a contact number for the crew in case you need to contact them en route. Give your mover your cell phone number and be sure to fully charge your cell phone the night before your moving day.

Label each box and indicate: which room it should go in; whether it is fragile; and if it should be loaded last so it will be unloaded first.

Cushion contents with packing materials such as bubble wrap, newspaper or tissue. Save room by using towels and TheRentersGuide.ca blankets to wrap fragile items.

BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP with Coconut Milk

DIRECTIONS

Peel, core and chop butternut squash into 1-inch cubes and steam until very tender. In an heavy bottomed pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion, ginger and garlic and sauté until softened, about three minutes. Add the curry paste and cook for a few more minutes. Stir in the chicken broth, coconut milk, squash and whole lime leaves. Simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the orange juice and zest. Remove the lime leaves and purée the soup with a hand mixer or in a blender. Serve hot or chilled. Garnish with a dollop of coconut cream or sour cream, and a sprig of Thai basil.

Butternut squash are amazingly versatile – roasted with butter, mashed into soups, baked into casseroles and breads, or my favourite, puréed into soups. This Asianinspired recipe for Butternut Squash Soup with Coconut Milk makes a luscious, slightly sweet, creamy soup, and using coconut milk and fresh squeezed orange juice, rather than heavy cream, gives it a lovely silky texture and lots of extra flavour. The lively background notes come from a touch of Thai red curry paste and a soupçon of fresh ginger, which give an exotic depth to this easy, delicious and healthy puréed soup.

INGREDIENTS Serves 8-10 ›TheRentersGuide.ca 1 large butternut squash, about 2 pounds

› 1-2 tsp Thai Red Curry paste

› 1 tbsp oil

› 6 kaffir lime leaves, whole

› 1⁄4 cup onion, minced

› 4 cups chicken broth

› 2 cloves garlic, chopped
