s you know, one of the biggest things to consider when renting is your choice of location. Unlike furniture, paint and being a good neighbour, it’s the one thing that you cannot change, so it’s important to choose well. What are the other critical things to consider when choosing a location? There are so many personal variables, it’s really up to you to decide. As an example, if it is just as important to you to be close to your children’s school as it is to your place of work, then look for a place that offers you the best of both worlds. If you aren’t keen on owning a car and want to use public transportation whenever possible to save on parking and gas costs, a well-connected mass transit location may be a better option for you. If you’re a walker, close proximity to major amenities should be a definite consideration. Doing errands such as grocery shopping and banking on foot not only offers many health benefits, it gives you a chance to meet new neighbours and discover new places too. Don’t let the cost of rent solely dictate your choice of location. Make a list of your priorities first, and then take the time to assess each location for its merits and weight your options.

t’s starting to get warmer – it’s time to get outside and enjoy. I feel like I come alive in the spring, especially after a bad winter. Yes, I know I live in Canada, I’ve always lived in Canada, and no matter where I’ve lived in Canada, the winter weather hasn’t agreed with me. But spring! Spring is wonderful. One great thing about spring is balconies! While they may have been ignored or used for storage over the winter, they’re the place to be in the spring. With the warmer weather you can have a little table, comfy chair and enjoy a coffee out there – perhaps even a chaise. You can get your planters going and grow flowers, veggies and herbs. The sunshine and fresh air feel good. But balconies have a dark side. There are a few things people use their balconies for that upset neighbours immensely. These offenses go from the mild to the extreme – and when living in close proximity to the neighbours, a bit of extra consideration goes a long way. You may get the urge to grill. Make sure your building allows it – and don’t smoke your neighbours out. Don’t use it as a pet potty. Be careful about smoking and ensure an ashtray is provided – nobody likes garbage of any kind being tossed off your balcony onto theirs. It’s also not a place for very loud music or late-night gatherings. If you’re considering a new apartment, take a look at the balcony and see if it’s going to offer you the outdoor living you know you enjoy during nice weather. It probably won’t be the determining factor, but it’s nice to have.

THE SPRING H.O.P.E. FOOD DRIVE When they come a-knocking, answer your door with food in hand on April 28th!

POKE AROUND IN YOUR PANTRY. DIG DEEP INTO THOSE DRAWERS AND SHOP YOUR SHELVES or just pick up a few extra non-perishables next time you’re at the grocery store. On Tuesday April 28th you’ll find volunteers for the 15th Annual Spring H.O.P.E. Food Drive showing up at your door between 6:30 to 9pm. They’re there to collect donations that will go a long way in restocking the shelves at your local food banks. This is your opportunity to make a difference and help a neighbour in need. H.O.P.E. stands for Housing Owners and People Everywhere, a real sense of a community looking after each other. The Food Banks shelves could use some restocking and Apartment Associations across the province, in conjunction with landlords and property management RentersGuide.ca companies are making it easy for you to pitch in by collecting donations in support. If that time isn’t convenient for you, you can leave your donation outside of your door; you can bring your donation down to your super or site office in advance; you can even make an online donation at www.springhopefooddrive.ca.

Hunger can affect anyone in need – it doesn’t discriminate by age, background or neighbourhood. According to Gail Nyberg, executive director of the Daily Bread Food Bank, this food drive is one of the most important because of its timing.“It’s a time of year when the shelves are depleting,” she says.“The infusion of food restocks our shelves.” The most needed items are the staples: rice, peanut butter, tins of fish, lentils, cereal – anything with good, substantial nutritious value. There is also always great need for baby food and products. Do what you can, even if it’s just a single item sitting at the back of your shelf that you know you can spare. And if your building RentersGuide.ca isn’t participating, you can still make a donation directly to your local food bank.

The lovely thing about Spring H.O.P.E. is that all food collected stays within the RentersGuide.ca community – residents should feel good that they’ll be supporting neighbours. 10

NEWTONBROOK WEST

THE HISTORIC NEIGHBOURHOOD OF NEWTONBROOK IS OVER 210 YEARS OLD HAVING BEEN FOUNDED IN 1796. Once its own municipality and once home to former Prime Minister and Nobel Peace Prize winner Lester B. Pearson, it is still a convenient and integral part of the city – a popular community in the furthest reaches of Toronto. Newtonbrook RentersGuide.ca features a significant number of rental apartment buildings along with numerous stores, parks and transportation options. It may be on the outskirts RentersGuide.ca but it’s still a great part of the city. 12

THE AREA Newtonbrook’s eastern half stretches from Yonge just past Bayview while its western part sashays across from Yonge to Dufferin Street. Steeles Avenue borders the area on the north side while Finch Avenue provides the southern border. Newtonbrook actually encompasses all of the area that is located within the east and west branches of the Don River. GETTING AROUND The TTC runs right through the entire neighbourhood, even routing within its interior streets. Highways 7 and 407 are not too far north of the area, with entrances off of Dufferin, Bathurst and Yonge. Heading south on Allen Road at the neighbourhood’s western extreme gives you the easiest of access to Highway 401. Finch Station has both busses and the subway. It doubles as a GO Station and includes bus access that is used by York Region Transit and Viva, making it as easy to get out of the city as it is to get downtown or across it.

SHOPPING The intersection of Bathurst and Steeles provides your local amenities with two separate shopping plazas that include a grocery, a pharmacy, a café, a bakery – the popular Me Va Me Restaurant – and two major banks. Centrepoint Mall is located further east on the southwest corner of Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue. YOU’RE THINKING OF MOVING THIS SUMMER, AND THAT MAY SEEM LIKE A LONG TIME FROM NOW, BUT IT’S NOT. Between contents and clutter, packing up a home is a huge job. Most people underestimate how much stuff they have and how long it will take to sort through it all!

Let’s face it, one of the benefits of renting is that you don’t have to worry about pesky repairs. Still before you add your landlord to speed dial, think before dialing and don’t make that call for anything on this list: TO CHANGE A LIGHT BULB THAT IS TOTALLY IN REACH I know light bulbs can be a grey area for renters, but asking your landlord to change a light bulb that is totally in reach is like asking him to replace the toilet paper roll… think about that. AT 2 IN THE MORNING Rest assured, the leaking kitchen faucet – which only leaks when it’s in use – can wait until the morning to be fixed. Unless a flood is threatening the security of your home, don’t call your landlord after 9pm.

Sure, your landlord probably knows the neighbourhood like the back of his hand, but that doesn’t mean you should pick up the phone to ask what time the corner grocery store closes on Sunday, or if the convenience store accepts American Express. Pick up your phone and Google it instead. FOR A FAVOUR The landlord is not your mom. Don’t call him to ask if you can borrow a cup of sugar or use his parking spot while he’s own vacation next week. TO INVITE HIM TO YOUR HOUSE PARTY Go ahead and celebrate your recent graduation or that new promotion with a lavish party, just don’t expect that disturbing your neighbours or ruining the rug can be forgiven and forgotten with a premium invite to your bash and some free beer – “Cheers Sir landlord!”

TO DISCUSS A REMODEL It’s a good idea to call your landlord to discuss putting a fresh coat of paint on the walls or doing other minor facelifts, just don’t get carried away and start suggesting knocking down any walls. BECAUSE YOU THINK SOMETHING IS BROKEN You ‘think’ you hear a noise which might be coming from the bathroom, possibly your bedroom, or maybe it’s just the cat? CLEARING CLUTTER AND PUTTING EVERYTHING AWAY CAN BE A CHALLENGE when you don’t have enough storage space. You’ve got to be creative in finding new places to store things, because closets and furniture will only get you so far. Take advantage of your condo’s height. Use the wall to store it all, and make a statement with decorative shelving and storage possibilities. GO VERTICAL OR GO HOME. When you’ve run out of storage space, lie on the floor and look up. There is a limited amount of horizontal space (countertops, desks, tables and the floor) but vertical space is abundant and often overlooked. Consider putting shelves above door frames or around the perimeter of the room, like a border. Hang things from the ceiling in the kitchen. When purchasing armoires, bookcases or shelving units, choose the tallest you can find and put baskets on top of them.

MAKE THE MOST OF CEILING SPACE. Install shelves a foot or so below the ceiling around the perimeter of your children’s rooms. On them, display prized belongings and collectables. This gets your treasures out of the closet where they take up valuable space, yet still allows the kids to enjoy them. ADJUST YOUR STORAGE SYSTEMS. A common misconception is that once you have organized your entire home, you’re done. However, organizing is a process, not a destination. As your interests change, so will your organizing systems. Put some time aside to tweak existing systems on a regular basis – especially when you experience a lifestyle change.

AVOID SHAMPOO OVERLOAD IN THE BATH. For a more streamlined look in your bath or shower, consider attaching wall-mounted soap and shampoo dispensers. This will eliminate the sticky mess of shampoos, soaps and lotions crowding the bath or shower, contributing to a more serene, spa-like space.

STORE MAGAZINES CREATIVELY. When looking for interesting ways to store magazines, think outside the box. As a creative alternative to a magazine stand, consider using a ladder. Propped up against a wall, a ladder is an interesting way to display magazines and make use of otherwise wasted vertical space.

CLEAR UP VALUABLE TABLETOP SPACE. We all have a limited amount of counter and tabletop space, but our wall space is often under-utilized. By hanging photos and framing special mementos in shadow boxes on the wall, you’ll free up space on your tabletops and create a less-cluttered, more-spacious look.
