he moment you move into an apartment from a reliable property management company, you will be able to enjoy a number of benefits. One cheque basically takes care of it all.

As you know, one of the biggest things to consider when renting is your choice of location. Unlike furniture, paint and being a good neighbour, it’s the one thing that you cannot change, so it’s important to choose well.

What are the other critical things to consider when choosing a location? There are so many personal variables, it’s really up to you to decide. As an example, if it is just as important to you to be close to your children’s school as it is to your place of work, then look for a place that offers you the best of both worlds. If you aren’t keen on owning a car and want to use public transportation whenever possible to save on parking and gas costs, a well-connected mass transit location may be a better option for you. If you’re a walker, close proximity to major amenities should be a definite consideration. Doing errands such as grocery shopping and banking on foot not only offers many health benefits, it gives you a chance to meet new neighbours and discover new places too. Don’t let the cost of rent solely dictate your choice of location. Make a list of your priorities first, and then take the time to assess each location for its merits and weight your options.

haven’t moved in about five years now, but my husband and I have both moved numerous times. We’ve both experienced moving from one province to another. We both had our fair share of room mates. We both lived in our own apartments before we met. When the time came to move in together 10 years ago, we faced that big dillemma: whose apartment? It was actually an easy decision. I loved his building, but we decided to move into a new apartment within the building so that it would be “Our First Place.” Looking back, it was the right move for us. We’ve moved twice since Our First Place – once to accommodate our growing family, and the second when we realized we needed to choose a family-friendly community to raise our kids. Our preferred community was the right fit while we were young socialites, but we wanted to trade the nightlife and stylish boutiques for playgrounds, daycare and a good school. Needs change, people change and, luckily, apartments change. Real estate can be a tricky thing and it’s hard to focus on our personal needs. We were happy to rent apartments because we knew there would be change. We weren’t ready to invest in real estate and, had we bought and sold those many times leading up to our current home, we would have gone through serious expense and not enjoyed the benefit of selection that we had in our various apartments. Renting is an amazing opportunity. It has many lifestyle benefits and offered us a lot of freedom. That next apartment is the next step, what new opportunities will it bring? THE SPRING H.O.P.E. FOOD DRIVE Open your door, your heart – and your pantry – on April 8 This year let’s make sure nobody goes without!

RESIDENTS, RENTERS, TENANTS, APARTMENT AFICIONADOS, IT’S TIME TO GO THROUGH THOSE CUPBOARDS, DIG INTO those pantries and pick up a few extras the next time you go to the grocery store. The 14th Annual Spring H.O.P.E. Food Drive is taking place on Tuesday April 8, and apartment communities are coming together with support. H.O.P.E. stands for Housing Owners and People Everywhere, a real sense of a community looking after each other. The Food Banks shelves could use some restocking and Apartment Associations across the province, in conjunction with landlords and property management companies are making it easy for you to pitch in by collecting donations in support. You can expect a knock on the door between 6:30 and 9:30 pm on April 8 from canvassing volunteers happy to pick up your donation. For convenience, you can leave your donation outside of your door if you won’t be available; you can bring your donation down to your super or site office in advance; you can even make an online donation at www.springhopefooddrive.ca. The lovely thing about Spring H.O.P.E. is that all food collected stays within the community – residents should feel good that they’ll be supporting neighbours. TheRentersGuide.ca Hunger can affect anyone in need – it doesn’t discriminate by age, background or neighbourhood. In the GTA this year’s Spring H.O.P.E. Food Drive, will help stock The Daily Bread Food Bank, North York Harvest Food Bank and the Mississauga Food Bank. These Food Banks literally rely on this drive to keep shelves stocked and bellies full. TheRentersGuide.ca According to Gail Nyberg, executive director of the Daily Bread Food Bank, this

food drive is one of the most important because of its timing.“It’s a time of year when the shelves are depleting,” she says.“The infusion of food restocks our shelves.” The most needed items are the staples: rice, peanut butter, tins of fish, lentils, cereal – anything with good, substantial nutritious value. There is also always great need for baby food and products. Do what you can, even if it’s just a single item sitting at the back of your shelf that you know you can spare. And if your building isn’t participating, you can still make a donation directly to your local food bank. “The food drive receives incredible support and participation is up,” says Spring H.O.P.E. Food Drive organizer Bonnie Hoy, rental industry professional and President of Bonnie Hoy and Associates. Spring H.O.P.E. started a dozen years ago because of an idea that TheRentersGuide.ca came from one child. Whether you’re a child or a senior citizen, we all have the capacity to give. DANFORTH VILLAGE Dynamic, vibrant and multicultural BY JANE HERMAN

DANFORTH VILLAGE, THE AREA ALONG THE DANFORTH FROM BROADVIEW TO WOODBINE, is an area with a fascinating TheRentersGuide.ca history, surprising natural beauty, colourful shopping districts, great restaurants TheRentersGuide.ca and multicultural flare. 10

Until the Bloor Street viaduct was built across the Don Valley in 1915, this area was only accessible by crossing the bridges at the south end of the city at Queen Street. In the 20th century, Greek immigrants began to arrive in Canada, settling predominantly in the area around Danforth and Pape. Walking along Danforth Avenue in the heart of “Greektown” today, you can still experience the rich cultural heritage of the Greek community. As you go further east, the area reflects a more diverse mosaic.

HAVING FUN One block south of the Danforth, between Logan and Carlaw, is Withrow Park, a large park with public tennis courts, two play areas for children (one with a wading pool) and an off-leash area for dogs. In the valley of the park there is an TheRentersGuide.ca outdoor rink with boards for ice hockey and public skating in the winter, and ball hockey in the summer. There are also two well-maintained soccer fields with bleachers.

Just down the hill, on Pottery Road off of Broadview Avenue, lies Todmorden Mills, a complex of historic buildings which were once part of the small industrial community of Todmorden. Here you can tour the historic buildings, and access several trails that traverse a variety of natural habitats, from a large wildflower preserve to forest, meadows and ponds. Thousands of people converge on Danforth Village every August for the annual Taste of the Danforth, an opportunity to sample the various delights offered by many Greektown restaurants, enjoy music, and other activities. The area is also a night owl’s haven, with many clubs and cafés open into the wee hours.

SHOPPING Danforth Avenue abounds with colourful fruit and meat markets, Greek bakeries and an array of cute shops, including clothing boutiques, bike shops, florists, medical/wellness and aesthetics services.

There are a number of new stores intermixed with the old, and many buildings have been modernized. With a great deal of businesses and services, the area offers a lot of convenience. From health food to daily groceries, the Danforth has it all. The subway system ties this area to the city with the Bloor/Danforth line making it easy to get right downtown quite quickly, without the hassle and expense of downtown parking. For drivers, the DVP can be accessed just to the west of the community on Bloor.

LIVING IN THE AREA Danforth Village has much to offer people of all ages and families of all sizes. Rents are, for the most part, average. There are clusters of apartments on Broadview Avenue near Pottery Road, some overlooking the Don Valley, and on Cosburn and Gamble.

LIVING IN AN APARTMENT INSTEAD OF A HOUSE, IS AN ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY USE OF SPACE AND RESOURCES. Many of today’s rental buildings have been updated with energyefficient windows, furnaces, appliances, lighting and plumbing fixtures. But it’s TheRentersGuide.ca up to you to do your part to reduce energy use wherever possible and conserve TheRentersGuide.ca precious resources like water. 28

SAVE ENERGY AND SAVE MONEY: Use fans during the summer to keep air circulating through your apartment. Replace incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs or compact fluorescents, which use 75 per cent less energy and last longer. Turn off all lights, unplug appliances and electronics, or use a power bar that can be turned off when not in use, at night or when you leave your apartment. Electronic devices that have transformers or “instant on” features are known as “power vampires” because they draw power even when turned off. Home entertainment centres and computers can use as much power as your refrigerator even when not in use. Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible. As much as 85 percent of the energy used to machine wash clothes goes to heating the water. Dry some of your laundry on a drying rack to save the energy used during machine drying. This has the bonus effect of extending the life of your clothing too, keeping items out of landfill. Keep the heat in during winter by drawing your TheRentersGuide.ca drapes or window coverings during the day. In summer, keeping the windows covered will help to keep your apartment cooler. Clean condenser coils on the back of your fridge at least once a year.

MAKE YOUR OWN CLEANING SUPPLIES: Making your own cleaning products saves money, time and packaging and dramatically improves your indoor air quality.

CONSERVE WATER: When doing laundry, adjust the machine setting to the size of the load. Report any leaky faucets to your property manager. The city has to treat water with chemicals and use energy to pump it back to you. Take shorter showers. Never let the water run when brushing your teeth: fill up a small cup of water instead. When washing dishes, fill up the sink with soapy water and immerse your dishes. Set on a drying rack, then rinse, instead of letting the water run continuously while you wash and rinse each dish. If you have a dishwasher, run it only when full.

Pure soap, baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, borax (washing soda) and a coarse scrubbing sponge can take care of most household cleaning needs. Be sure to purchase a couple of refillable spray bottles from the hardware store. For an all-purpose cleaner, use a mixture of ½ tsp. washing soda, ¼ tsp. liquid soap, and 2 cups hot tap water. A good natural glass cleaner can be made by mixing ¼ tsp. liquid detergent, 3 tbs. vinegar and 2 cups water in a spray bottle. COMPOST AND RECYCLE: In most cities, apartments send way too much garbage to landfills. Learn what can be recycled in your municipality and commit to making recycling a regular habit. In Toronto that includes everything from egg cartons to tetrapaks, styrofoam trays and plastic containers. Properly dispose of used furniture, electronics, clothing and household items, batteries as directed by your community. Walk, cycle, take public transportation or use a shared vehicle to help reduce the number of cars on the roads. Just a few small changes in your lifestyle can make a big difference in the quality of the environment for everyone.

BANISH PLASTIC WATER BOTTLES, DISPOSABLE ITEMS AND EXCESS PACKAGING: Keep a pitcher of cold water in the refrigerator instead of running the water until it gets cold. Use a reusable water bottle for water and a travel mug for coffee. Bring your own reusable bags to the store when you shop. Make a habit of carrying a small one in your handbag or leave a few in your car. Use a cloth instead of paper towels and napkins.

This year’s theme will highlight secret spaces, stories of spirit sightings and unexplained mysteries at more than 75 locations, including an underground bowling alley in a downtown church, a secret tomb in another church, haunted tunnels beneath a school and bank vaults in a hotel. ONE OF THE LIFE EVENTS THAT WILL HAVE THE BIGGEST IMPACT ON YOUR MONEY IS THE ARRIVAL OF A NEW BABE and the income loss associated with taking maternity leave. In Canada, new moms can take up to 52 weeks off from their jobs and have those jobs protected for their return to work. However, all that time off doesn’t necessarily come with a full paycheque. Yes, there are companies that offer a “top up”, but it hardly ever is for the full amount of your before-baby pay, and it seldom lasts for the full year.

For people who do not receive a top-up, employment insurance (EI) benefits will provide an income. EI benefits are calculated as 55 per cent of your normal earnings up to a maximum salary. So if you’re earning $40,000 a year, which translates into $3333 before taxes a month, or $769 gross a week, you’ll be entitled to 55 per cent of that or about $423 a week, before taxes. Ouch! On top of that pain is the fact that the first two weeks of mat leave are unpaid, so your income calculation won’t start until the third week. And since it’ll take between four to six weeks to get your first EI benefit deposited into your bank account, you shouldn’t be counting on that money to make your mortgage payment or buy food. Moms aren’t the only ones who can take time off with your new Mini-Me. Dads can take up to 35 weeks of parental leave; however EI benefits have to be shared between the mother and father so they can’t both collect EI at the same time. Adoptive parents also get to take parental benefits and fall under the same rules as dads. So, now that you know you’ll only be getting a fraction of the income you’ve become used to, how are you going to cope? Many new moms and dads resort to using their credit cards or lines of credit to see them through. Dumb! With a new long-term expense – that’s the baby – adding gobs of interest to the equation is no way to secure your financial future. Every month you’ll fall further and further behind, becoming almost desperate at the hole you’ve dug yourself. And if another baby arrives soon after, your goose will be cooked. Just because Canadians are guaranteed a year of mat leave doesn’t mean we have the right to take it. We only have that right if we’ve taken the time to plan TheRentersGuide.ca for it, and have the money we’ll need to make ends meet without going into debt.

The best way to see the implication of the mat leave income drop-off is to live on the equivalent of your mat leave income for the duration of your pregnancy. Put the rest of the money you’re earning away for emergencies, to buy the stuff you’ll need for baby, or to start an education savings plan. If you can’t swing it for the months that you’re pregnant, you might want to reconsider taking the full year’s mat leave. The other thing you have to consider is which member of the family should take the most time with the baby. While, traditionally, women have done this, when the woman is the primary breadwinner in the family then the income loss to the family is felt doubly. Do the math to see who should take time off and how much, and how that will impact on the family’s financial situation. You have to make a budget that balances while you’re off, including a whole bunch of new categories that incorporate baby’s food, clothes, personal care (diapers, shampoo, cream), medical, toys, activities, and savings. Don’t forget the costs associated with actually getting the baby here: hospital rooms and parking. If you have a health plan through work, you may be covered

for semi-private room. If not, you may have to settle for sharing a room with a lot of other crying babies. And don’t bank on being in hospital for only one day. If there’s any complication with baby, you’ll be “living” at the hospital until baby can come home. Don’t add financial stress to your already overstressed life. The arrival of your newest family member should be a time full of joy and excitement. But you can’t expect things to run smoothly if you’re a dope and don’t do some planning. People like to say they didn’t have any time to plan… that they were “surprised” by baby’s arrival. You’re kidding me, right? Nine (I actually think of it as ten) months isn’t enough time to figure out how you’re going to cope? Or maybe it’s that you don’t want to have to face some hard truths. Well, you have a baby to consider now, so it’s time to wake up and smell the poop!

THE FEDERATION OF RENTAL-HOUSING PROVIDERS OF ONTARIO (FRPO) CREATED THE Certified Rental Building Program (CRBP) to help rental accommodation shoppers find professionallyrun buildings that nurture a high quality of life for residents. The CRBP also works for the benefit of owners and property managers, as certified buildings offer peace-of-mind that attracts tenants. People who rent may not own their apartments, but the building is their home, and they appreciate the quality assurance that comes along with the program. Landlords and owners who register buildings with the CRBP seal of approval that all those involved with the operating of the building will uphold certain standards that protect the safety, privacy and comfort of tenants. Those who choose an apartment that passes the CRBP qualifications know that the property managers and/or owners TheRentersGuide.ca who took part went through intensive training in established Standards of Practice that improve building operation and customer service. These fall under several categories involving the daily

The CRBP program ensures that each successfully certified building practices over 36 established building management and customer service standards. These include a commitment to adhering to provincial fire and building codes, having mechanical systems such as heating and cooling equipment checked and maintained, and more. Renters also want to live in a building where management staff members respond to requests and concerns promptly. If problems arise and repairs on or the replacement of equipment will cause temporary disruptions in tenantsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; lives, management should explain the reason. Another reassurance to tenants who select a CRBP building is that those industry professionals who complete the training successfully agree to adhere to human rights responsibilities to both tenants and employees. Those who are certified agree to conduct business according to a Member Code of Conduct. An example involves responding to tenant inquiries. Owners or property managers must respond to these within two business days, and tenant information must be stored in compliance with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, a Canadian law relating

to data privacy. It is reassuring to know that this level of professionalism and respect is an integral part of qualifying for the program. Plus, certified buildings must undergo random-audit site inspections to help ensure requirements are being met on an ongoing basis. 5 ways to

BRIGHTEN UP A ROOM BY YANIC SIMARD

BRIGHTENING UP A ROOM THAT DOESN’T HAVE A LOT OF LARGE WINDOWS OR WITH AN EXPOSURE THAT DOESN’T GET A LOT OF NATURAL LIGHT CAN BE BOTH CHALLENGING AND FRUSTRATING. If you haven’t got the option of knocking down or opening up walls, or adding windows, then I’ve got five different suggestions that you may find very useful. 1 “ARTIFICIAL” LIGHTING I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; It’s all in the lighting. Of course this might seem like the most obvious solution, but many people go about it in the wrong way. When choosing a ceiling light, be sure to choose something that directs the light downwards or outwards, not upwards. If the lights directed towards the ceiling, it won’t do you much good. One of my favourite fixtures is the Medusa Chandelier; with it’s 30 exposed light bulbs, being short of lighting should never be an issue. It’s also 31.5 inches in diameter, covering a wide array of space. When choosing a table or floor lamp with a shade, choose a light-coloured translucent shade that allows the light to shine through. If you’re blocking the light you need with a solid shade, what’s really the point of having it? Keep the base and swap the shade!

2 PAINT I asked my fans on Facebook and Twitter if they thought that light-coloured paint would lighten up a dark room. About 99 per cent of them said yes, meaning 99 per cent of them were wrong! Paint can visually brighten up a room (which is what our goal is), but not lighten up a room. You still won’t be able to read a book in that same room with no light regardless of if your walls are deep blue or bright white! Believe it or not, a mid-tone beige colour is the best choice to keep the room feeling bright! Paint Colour Recommendation: Benjamin Moore’s CC-396, “Stone Castle”. 3 WALLPAPER Wallpaper can completely warm up and brighten the look of a room. If you’re going to take this route, choose a wallpaper that has an element of metallic in it so that it can reflect the light from it. Wallpaper Recommendation: Graham & Brown’s Kelly Hoppen “Hicks” Pattern, Colour: Taupe/ Charcoal/Silver. Tip: If you have a window in the space, it’s ideal that you’d install the wallpaper at the wall directly across from it. 4 REFLECTIVE FINISHES Mirrors, chrome, glass and metallic are all designer favourite finishes to work with in a dull and dark room. Keep what light you do have bouncing around off of these pieces throughout the day and night. Tip: Create a focal wall with three large scale mirrors that go almost floor to ceiling – this will make the room feel much brighter and also much bigger 5 FURNITURE SCALE The size of the furniture plays a big part in the illusion of adding brightness to a room. If you have heavy, dark, chunky furniture, then of course the room will feel that way. If you have light, open, clean-line furniture, then the room will feel much more airy and open. Typically homeowners purchase their furniture in a ‘set’. If you’re one of those people, try and replace the furniture that’s on the heavier side one piece at a time. Even just swapping one bulky black leather club chair for a slightly smaller light-coloured fabric upholstered slipper chair will make the world of a difference – you’ll see. RENTING A HOME Know your rights and responsibilities WHETHER YOU’RE A FIRST-TIME RENTER or an experienced tenant, when it comes to renting a home, it’s important to make sure you understand your rights and responsibilities. To help you through each stage of the rental process, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) offers the following tips on how to find the right place to call home, and what you need to know after you move in: The first step in looking for a home is to identify your needs as a renter. What’s your budget? Which neighbourhood do you want to live in? How many bedrooms do you need? What amenities are important to you? If you haven’t already created a list of your needs and preferences, CMHC’s Rental Search Worksheet can

help give you a head start. Once you’ve identified what you’re looking for, it’s time to start looking for your new home. There are a number of resources available to help you find a place to rent. These can range from newspapers, apartment listing websites and bulletin boards in local libraries or community centres, to asking friends for recommendations or simply visiting neighbourhoods you like and looking for signs that say“For Rent.”{Ed’s note: And magazines like Renters Guide are a great go-to source!] When you look at a prospective rental, have a list of questions ready to ask the landlord. For example, you may want to know if the rent includes parking or utilities, what type of lease will you be asked to sign, whether or not you can make any changes to the premises, and whether pets or smoking are allowed. When meeting a landlord, try to make a good impression. Dress neatly and arrive on time. Respect the current tenant’s

privacy. And make the landlord’s job easier by bringing your rental history and references, a letter from your current employer, and a cheque so you can leave a deposit in case you’re interested in the home. If you will be viewing more than one apartment, write down the key features of each place so you can compare them later. CMHC’s Rental Unit Evaluation Worksheet can help you evaluate your options and make an informed decision. When you rent a place, the landlord will usually ask you to sign a rental agreement, commonly known as a“lease.”Rental agreements vary from one province or territory to another, but they generally include the names of the landlord and tenant, the address of the property, the amount of the rent and what it includes, the date when the rent is due each month, the amount of any security or damage deposits, the term of the rental period, as well as things like who is responsible for maintaining the property, whether there are any restrictions on the tenant, and when and how the landlord can enter the premises. Once you’ve signed your lease, it’s time to move in! Moving can be a hectic time. A planning checklist, such as CMHC’s Three Weeks to Moving Day, can help you keep track of all the details, and help make sure your move goes as smoothly as possible. Before you move in, you and your landlord should inspect your new home together. Use an Initial Inspection Worksheet to document everything you notice, so you won’t be held liable for any preexisting damage when you leave. Once you’re living in your new home, make sure you and your landlord are clear on who is responsible for what, especially with issues such as emergency or regular repairs, rent increases, or how to handle any complaints that might arise. In the event of an emergency (such as a leaking roof or broken furnace on a cold TheRentersGuide.ca winter day), try to contact your landlord or emergency contact at least twice, and give them a reasonable amount of time to respond. If you can’t reach your landlord

and have to authorize emergency repairs yourself, make sure to document and keep all paperwork related to the repair for later reimbursement. If a problem arises that you can’t work out directly with your landlord, check with your provincial or territorial rental authority to find out if there are any tenant advocacy groups in your community. Do not withhold rent to pay for repairs, as this can be grounds to have you evicted. When your lease expires, you may sign a new lease, or you might shift to a monthto-month lease. Depending on where you live, your landlord could also give notice that they will be increasing your rent. Eventually, the time will come when you’re ready to end your tenancy and move out. When this time comes, you and your landlord will again inspect the property together, to see if any repairs

are needed above and beyond the usual “wear and tear.”Your landlord will also have to return any damage or security deposits you paid when you moved in, plus interest. Remember: you may need your old landlord to give you a reference in the future, so do your best to leave under good terms. Give them the proper amount of notice in writing. Make any necessary repairs. Allow the landlord to show the home to potential new tenants. And leave the place in as good a condition as you found it, so the next tenants will be able to enjoy their new home as much as you did. UNPACK YOUR COMMON SENSE for a smooth move BY CHUCK RESNICK

WHEN IT COMES TO MOVING, A LITTLE COMMON SENSE GOES A LONG WAY in transporting your belongings to your destination so that they arrive in good shape and on time.

Did I mention labeling?

Considering the importance our stuff has in making us feel comfortable in our surroundings, these items deserve special thought and care. Thinking ahead is the best thing you can do when it comes to making arrangements, packing, etc. Organization should be your mantra, efficiency your goal.

Again, a little common sense goes a long way to success at the other end. When you pack the moving vehicle, remember to place the boxes you’ll need first, last — and label accordingly with the contents and which room it goes into. Even better, if you are driving to your next residence, place things such as garbage bags, tissues, dish liquid, etc. into the car. You should also carry valuables such as jewelry, your laptop, important papers and the like separately from the bulk of your items.

If you are doing your own packing, look ahead to lifting, stacking and unpacking the boxes during your move. People often run to the grocery or liquor store to pick up cartons, and then use newspaper as cushioning. Although this approach can save you a few dollars, in the long run, you may pay for it in stress, time and broken items. Instead, think about purchasing cartons and packing paper from the professional mover you’ve chosen. The boxes come in uniform small, medium and large sizes, which are easy to stack in a moving truck or van.

Another way to apply common sense to packing is to look at each item with the thought, do I really need and/or use this? Especially if you are moving from a larger space into a smaller one, paring down possessions is important. The fewer things you move, the less your move will cost in terms of time and money. And speaking of money, if your budget allows, hire movers to do your packing and transporting. We do this every day, and we have it all down to an efficient system. Professional movers want our moves to go smoothly as much as our clients do.

Trust me, this convenience is huge on moving day. Unlike newspaper, packing paper does not leave behind ink that then has to be cleaned during an already hectic time in your life.

Everyone is born with common sense, but few use it. If you are planning a move, I encourage you to be one of those savvy few!

During the packing itself, be generous with whatever you are using to cushion your things, especially fragile items. As good as that sounds, it can backfire, as too many items with not enough cushioning may shift during transportation and damage each other. THE CITY OF TORONTO’S OUTSIDE THE BOX PROGRAM, A COLLABORATION BETWEEN TRANSPORTATION SERVICES’ PUBLIC REALM UNIT AND LOCAL ARTISTS, is wrapping traffic cabinet boxes with a graphically attractive, synthetic wrap. The project, which features original artwork by Gary Taxali and photographic images by the late Moira McElhinney, is designed to beautify city infrastructure while reducing graffiti vandalism. The more than 2,200 traffic-signal boxes across the city contain equipment that controls the traffic signals. The boxes are often susceptible to postering and graffiti vandalism. “A cleaner Toronto is better for everyone,” said Mayor Rob Ford. “Discouraging and eliminating graffiti vandalism lets residents and visitors know that we care about our city.” “A cleaner and more vibrant Toronto creates a more attractive place for our citizens, attracts a greater number of visitors and, as a result, improves our economic prosperity,” said Councillor Cesar Palacio (Ward 17 Davenport), Chair of the Licensing and Standards Committee. “This undertaking is a great step forward in achieving this goal.”

CREAM OF CAULIFLOWER SOUP (Crème du Barry)

INGREDIENTS Serves 6 to 8

› 2 tbsp butter

› 2 cups 10% cream

› 2 cups chopped leeks, white portion only, rinsed well

› 1 bay leaf

› 1 head of cauliflower, cut into florets › 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth

› 2 tsp sea salt and freshly ground white pepper, to taste › fresh chives or chervil, for garnish

DIRECTIONS

In a large soup pot over medium heat, warm the butter. Add the leeks and sauté, stirring constantly, until tender, about five minutes. Add the cauliflower and sauté for about five minutes. Add the stock, cream, bay leaf and sea salt, bring to a simmer, reduce the heat to medium-low and cover. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until the cauliflower is very tender, about 45 to 60 minutes. Remove the bay leaf.

CREAMY IN TEXTURE AND BUTTERY IN FLAVOR, THIS DELICIOUS CREAM OF CAULIFLOWER SOUP MAKES AN ELEGANT BEGINNING TO ANY PARTY MENU. CALLED CRÈME DU BARRY IN FRANCE, ITS NAME LIES IN HISTORY, LIKE MANY GOOD FRENCH RECIPES. This easy, rich and creamy soup was named after Madame Jeanne Bécu, comtesse du Barry, a famous French beauty who was the last official mistress of the ill-fated king, Louis XV. At the time, it was a common practice to recognize royalty and other public figures in the naming of new culinary creations, so whenever you see the term du Barry, you know the dish includes cauliflower. I can think of many foods I might want to be named after, other than cauliflower, but in this case TheRentersGuide.ca it had to do with the dish being considered “high class” in preparation and presentation...creamy, silky, smooth, and pure. Although, Madame Du Barry was not exactly pure, her legend lives on in this velvety smooth and delicious soup. TheRentersGuide.ca 116

Using a stick blender, purée the soup directly in the pot until it’s very smooth and creamy. Alternatively, use a food processor, and puree the soup in batches. Press the soup through a chinois or other fine-mesh sieve set over a clean saucepan. Season with white pepper. Keep the soup warm over low heat until ready to serve. Ladle the soup into warmed individual bowls, garnishing each serving with some fresh ground white pepper, snipped chives or chervil. Serve immediately.
